High speed oil containmentThe NOFI Current Buster® 4 is well suited for use in fjords and coastal areas. Oil containment and separation with up to 4 knots towing speed. A conventional oil boom begins to lose oil already at 0,7 to 0,9 knots towing speed.

Official tests done by the US Coast Guard at the OHMSETT test facility in July 1999 showed that the NOFI Current Buster® 4 contains oil at towing speeds of up to 3,5 knots with acceptable loss rates also in short period waves.

The high towing speed is achieved by ensuring that the differential speed between the two phased oil and water interface does not exceed the classic oil entrainment limit of approx. 0,9 knots.

At the stern of the NOFI Current Buster® 4, the system includes a combined high capacity flexible separator and temporary storage unit. By means of the separation (settling) technique, the unit contains a thick layer of calm oil, thus providing a skimmer or a pump with almost pure oil, giving excellent recovery rates.

At towing speeds between 3 and 4 knots the NOFI Current Buster® 4 offers excellent area coverage and high operational flexibility, because the compact system can be turned easily and towed quickly between oil slicks. NOFI Current Buster® 4 may be towed by one single boat in combination with the paravane BoomVanePat. by ORC AB, Sweden. This will in many cases increase the flexibilty in manoeuvring and oil collecting.

During the “Rocknes” spill, several thousand metres of oilbooms were in operation. At least 50% of all oil collected at sea was collected by one single NOFI Current Buster® 4 towed by two smaller vessels.

TEST RESULTSThe system has been tested in oil emulsion with viscosities of 83, 240, 5000, 11300, 62000 and 180000 cP at SFT’s National Test Centre in Horten, Norway, and for this full range of viscosities there was hardly any loss at all at 1,5 knots towing speed. In 2001 US NAVY testet the system with diesel oil, with exceptionally good results.
