The Unexpected King When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, many onlookers probably didn’t know what to think of such an image. Kings ordinarily drew much greater crowds than this. Kings usually entered in a horse-drawn carriage that was bedecked with jewels, and other ornaments signifying his kingliness. Most kings had servants following along, very likely fanning his highness to keep bugs away, and to cool his brow.
Jesus rode in on a donkey. It was very likely a bumpy, uncomfortable ride. And only His followers were praising Him saying “Hosanna!” Palm branches probably didn’t do much to cool Him, and the flying insects were not dissuaded.
Jesus was unlike other kings in many ways, and His entry into Jerusalem was emblematic of His kingship. Although His entry was met with shouts of praise, the adoration came from those who knew Him as the Son of God, not from the local authorities and other good citizens of the city. They probably wondered what all the commotion was about.
Kings lived in palaces. They had great wealth, and they flaunted it. Kings had servants waiting on them hand and foot. They had dancing girls entertaining their party guests at lavish banquets. Kings owned slaves and treated the accordingly. Kings conquered other kingdoms, enslaved their people, seized their assets and ruled mercilessly. Those who opposed their will met with severe punishment or execution. In those days, executions were far more harsh and painful than we can imagine. Executioners tried as hard as they could to make the death penalty as severe as possible. Crucifixion is a prime example.
When Jesus’ disciples first heard Him talking about being the Messiah, they supposed He meant that He would be their military ruler, a revolutionary who would overthrow the current regime and take over the realm. They expected Him to rule the land by might as most kings did.
Instead, the King they found in Jesus was lowly, poor, merciful and forgiving. He would be the only king they ever heard of who sacrificed Himself, not other people. Most kings sent others to be executed. He didn’t take their place himself.
Today, what king, or prime minister or president would sacrifice himself to save his people? What king, prime minister or president would choose to live in a one-bedroom apartment in a poor part of town and leave the royal residence for others to live in? What king, prime minister or president would ride a bicycle to work, rather than be chauffeured around in a bullet-proof limousine attended by a squadron of secret service agents?
Jesus’s kingship consists in what He gave up, rather than in what he gathered to Himself. Jesus’ glory can be seen in His sacrifice, not in any material wealth, popularity or military might. Jesus is the most humble person who ever lived. It is for His love, mercy, grace, forgiveness, compassion and the salvation He brings that we shout together with those who received Him on Palm Sunday, “Hosanna!” Amen.

beginning at 4:00 p.m.
at Notre Dame Catholic Church Kerrville, Texas
This beautiful and inspiring program will take place on the First Saturday of each month, to pray for the end of abortion and the culture of death, attend Confession if desired, and satisfy the request of Our Lady of Fatima to honor Her Immaculate Heart and help bring about peace in the world.
We invite you to learn about and be a part of this special devotion.
Join us before the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe as we pray and sing for the world. Offer personal intentions to Our Lady for your children and families.
The 5:00 p.m. Vigil Mass will follow.
Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer; an hour of adoration. This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from. An adorer is needed for:
Friday 12:00 midnight—1:00 a.m.
If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.
viernes 12:00 media noche—1:00 a.m.
Thank you to all who have made a gift to the 2019 Archbishop’s Appeal, Encounter: Live in Faith, Give in Love. Deborah Harris tells us about a timely one.
The story about the birth, life, death, and
resurrection of Jesus Christ has been told and retold
over 2,000 years. To the over one billion of
Catholics in the world today, these stories are of
endless fascination and have an ever deeper meaning
to us. Let’s look at a couple that will be out in the
narthex bookcase.
The Birth and Passion of Jesus: The Jerusalem
Passion Play, photographs by Max and Hilla
Jacoby, and text by Lawrence F. Mihlon is a vivid
and powerful presentation of Jesus’ Passion. Its 111
full color photographs and scriptural narratives
capture the splendor and anguish of the gospel story.
It is very powerful and allows you to feel like you are
walking with Jesus on His incredible journey.
The Last Week: A Day-by-Day Account of Jesus’s
Final Week in Jerusalem, by Marcus J. Borg and
John Dominic Crossan depicts Jesus giving up His
life to protest power without justice and to condemn
the rich who lack concern for the poor. At the end of
the week, Jesus marches up Calvary, offering
Himself as a model for others. In this book we not
only meet the historical Jesus, but meet a new Jesus
who engages us and invites us to follow Him.
The authors use the Gospel according to Mark
because it is the oldest. Mark tells us how the story
of Jesus was told around 70 AD. They also used
Mark’s Gospel because he went out of his way to
chronicle Jesus’s last week on a day-to-day basis.
Finally, Mark chronicles Friday’s events in three-
hour intervals: 6 am, 9 am, 12 noon, 3 pm, and 6 pm.
Without Easter we wouldn’t have Good Friday.
Easter is about the most spectacular miracle there has
ever been, the resurrection of Jesus. God raised
Jesus who promises us everlasting life. This book
presents a day-to-day account of Jesus’ final week of
life. The story begins on Palm Sunday with two
triumphal entries into Jerusalem. The first entry is
that of the Roman governor Pontius Pilate leading
Roman soldiers into the city. The second heralded a
new kind of moral hero who was praised by the
people as He rode in on a humble donkey. God is
proving that Jesus was indeed His Son.

What: Catholic Kidz Camp
When: June 10-14
Where: Notre Dame Gym
Time: 8:00-12:00
Kids will check-in with St. Catherine, pick-up their flight plan and meet their very own Guardian
Angel! They will encounter exciting characters from the Bible whose lives were transformed by the
angels. Who knows? They may meet Mary, the Queen of Angels on the way! Kids will have a soaring
good time!
Parachute with the Angels and St. Catherine Labouré Catholic Kidz Camp is divided into four
age-specific programs. The creative grade-appropriate lessons are based on Sacred Scripture and
Catholic Tradition and the Doctors of the Church. Each day, after the Welcome & Prayer, fun lessons
begin and explain the various roles angels play in our salvation. These lessons are engaging and
promote active participation. Each day children will listen to the story of Saint Catherine Labouré
because Catherine was led by an angel to meet Mary, the Queen of Angels. After listening to a
specific section of the storybook which complements the daily lesson, children will participate in a
variety of drama skits, role-play, games and Bible verse memory activities. Sensational, easy-to-make
crafts reflect each day's theme. Songs from the Angel of God Music CD are upbeat, lively and the
lyrics enrich the overall program.
VOLUNTEERS: WE NEED YOU!!!
If you are interested in helping our kids learn their Catholic faith
in a fun and exciting way, please contact:
