“Good Morning, Saints!” I love the way Pastor Dave welcomes us to worship on Sundays. It’s a subtle reminder of our common identity and calling in the Lord. We are saints! This may be confusing to those familiar with other churches that have an official church designation of specific people as “saints.” These are usually people either mentioned in the Bible or those now deceased whose lives heroically demonstrated “an outstanding degree of holiness” (New Dictionary of Theology). However, our own church tradition considers all Christian people to be saints of God, both the famous and the obscure, past and present. Because of Christ’s work on our behalf and because of the Spirit’s work within us, we are all “holy ones,” set apart by and for the holy God. In fact, the title “saints” is the one used most often in the New Testament to describe Christians as a group. It is a status conferred upon us today. All Christian believers are saints. In the Apostles’ Creed, Christians profess their belief in “the communion of saints,” which is a way of affirming the connection we share with all Christians everywhere. The communion of saints is the spiritual union of all those who are in Christ, both those alive today (the “Church Militant,” which fights against evil in this world) and those who’ve gone before us (the “Church Triumphant,” which rests with God).

November 1st is celebrated in many churches as All Saints Day, a day to honor all those who have lived and died in the Lord. Scholars aren’t sure whether this observance is Celtic or Germanic in origin, but they know that some Christians observed it as early as the 8th century. Although theologians refer to this group as the “Church Triumphant,” I prefer a phrase used by members of the Salvation Army to describe those members of their corps who have died: “promoted to glory.” At noon on Wednesday, November 1, Pastor Dave and I will lead a simple, quiet service of worship to remember and celebrate those who have been promoted to glory. We will thank God for their lives and their witness, and we will celebrate Christ’s victory over death and the fellowship that results. It’s well expressed in the hymn, “For All the Saints:” O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; Yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine. Alleluia! Alleluia! With the rest of you saints, following the Master,

ALL SAINTS DAY - WORSHIP SERVICE NOVEMBER 1ST, 12 P.M.

November 1 is All Saints Day, an occasion for the Church to give God thanks for the lives of those Christians who’ve gone before us. We will remembering and celebrating all the believers who’ve been “promoted to glory,” including your own family members and dear friends, as well as those from Saint Andrew who’ve died in the last year. This will be a simple and quiet service of worship conducted by our pastors at noon for all who are interested.

My Mother, Nancy Pittard, had a hobby of knitting shawls. She had an abundance of yarn in her apartment which I gave to Connell Hicks to use for the Prayer Shawl Ministry. She made four from this yarn for the Ministry. After the passing of my Mother on August 24th, there was a partially completed shawl which Connell graciously took the challenge to complete for donation to the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Please give all the recognition to Connell as she has devoted many hours and hard work to this Ministry. -Jim Pittard

TRIBUTE TO GARY FOSTER FOR HIS 25 YEARS AS CHURCH ORGANIST

-written by Danny Moore

[to the tune of Holy, Holy, Holy]

Gary, Gary, Gary! Loves to play the organ. Early Sunday morning plays hymns for you and me. Choir and congregation stand in awe before thee; Perfect in pitch and simple harmony.

Gary, Gary, Gary! Leads us all in worship. Counting rhythm with his feet with great authority! Plays with grace and majesty, anthems and doxology. Preludes and postludes in simple harmony.

Gary, Gary, Gary! Bows before the keyboard. Fixing pedals, pipes, and stops; a techno wiz is he! Playing songs in four-hand style; master of the ivories; Organ and piano simultaneously!

Gary, Gary, Gary! All your friends adore thee. That is why we’re here today to celebrate with you. Twenty-five’s a big deal! There is none quite like you. Thank you sincerely, from your church family! THANK YOU SINCERELY, FROM YOUR CHURCH FAMILY!

At AREVA NP, it was unprecedented – that is until recently , when Dean Lindeman became the first employee ever to complete 50 years of service with the company. To put that in perspective, Dean started his

career when Lyndon Johnson was president, the Summer of Love had just ended, and the average price of a new home was $14,250! CONGRATULATIONS TO DEAN!

SYMPATHY

We express our sympathy to Ash-by & David Downtain and family on the death of Ashby's mother, Uvonna Curott of Florence, Ala-bama. Mrs. Curott died on Oct. 8, 2017, at the age of 92. We express our sympathy to the family of Winn Thoren, who died on Sun., Oct. 8, 2017. Winn has been member of Saint Andrew since 1977. A funeral service was held at Saint Andrew.

PRAYER CLOSET ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME.? CAN YOU HEAR ME? Communication is vital in any relationship. It is a dialogue, not a monologue. Too often we are so preoccupied with our response that we do not really hear what is being said. This is true of our relationship with God. "Bless this person, help me, thank you for..." we say. But, do we take time to be still and listen to God's response? Only when we hear and follow God's directions do we grow in His light. Call on me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know. -Jeremiah 33:3

Advent and Christmas Seasonal Choir The season of Advent and Christmas at Saint Andrew is a special time for everyone. The church sanctuary is decorated with candles and greenery. The Chrismon Tree, Lighting of the Advent Candles, and familiar carols sung and played all add to the seasonal worship experience.

Seasonal Choir rehearsals for Advent and Christmas music will be conducted in the Choir Room each week in November beginning at 8:15 p.m. except during Thanksgiving week when the Seasonal Choir will rehearse on Tuesday, November 21 instead of Wednesday November 22. During December choir rehearsals will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Although you are not required to participate every Sunday during Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, you will be well-prepared to do so if you attend rehearsals on a regular basis.

It will be fun finding and rehiding them around the grounds at church and on Timberlake Road. Thank you.

Meals on Wheels birthday boxes We would like your help to celebrate the folks that received meals through Meals on Wheels that have a birthday. We are going to put together a birthday wrapped shoe box with small gifts such as notepads, ink pens, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, shaving cream, lotion, word find books, nail files and clippers, disposable razors, etc. If you have any empty shoe boxes we can use them. So many of the meal folks do not receive a birthday gift at all. We will be collecting these items now until November 20th. There will be a large box put out for your gifts.
