Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to
be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some
difference that you have lived and lived well.”
That is an amazing statement. As I have aged and matured in my faith in
Jesus Christ I have come to realize that God did not promise to make us
happy…He called us to be holy. Then as we walk a life of holiness we
make a difference in the world.
What does your world include? Your world certainly begins with those that
are closest to you. God has called you to be holy before your family. Your
impact on your spouse and children and grandchildren is greatly enhanced
as you walk in holiness before the Lord.
Your world includes the people around you…neighbors, workmates, class-
mates, etc. To be “useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it
make some difference,” requires that you live a life of holiness.
Now I know what you are thinking. “Pastor, I cannot be holy. I am only
human and I sin every day.” At that point you are correct. I am right there
with you. I am just like the Apostle Paul when he said, “For I do not under-
stand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I
hate” (Romans 7:15). The flesh and the spirit are in constant struggle for
domination in our lives.
Being holy is a striving, a continual effort, of being in the presence of God
moment by moment. It is a daily surrender of our will to God’s will.
Absolutely we will fail from time-to-time. But in the striving we are grow-
ing and continually become more like the image of Christ.
Will you commit in this new year to strive for holiness rather than straining
for happiness? Happiness is temporal and contingent on circumstances.
Holiness leads to a deeper relationship with God through Jesus Christ. That,
in turn, allows us to “have lived and lived well.”
God bless you as you walk in holiness in the year 2014. Make it your best
year ever by being in the center of God’s will, pleasing Him and serving
others.
By His grace,

Marriage Today Conference
February 14-15
Gateway, Dallas
When a husband and wife have one heart and mind with God, they
can relate to each other with unconditional love and the fruit of
the Spirit. This is the very image of God on earth, and we believe
that every healthy marriage will affect generations to come. The
Marriage Today Conference is scheduled for February 14 & 15 at
Gateway, 700 Blessed Way, Southlake, Texas. Cost is $60.
Lodging will be an additional cost. Each couple will be responsi-
ble for making their own hotel reservations.
Please call the church office, 903-786-2233, if you are interested
in attending this special conference.
“Do not be anxious about
anything, but in every situation,
by prayer and petition, with
thanksgiving, present your
requests to God. And the peace
of God, which transcends all
understanding, will guard your
hearts and your minds in Christ
Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7
