Joyce, o f course, is Bert 's mul t i - ta lented w i f e . She is a reg is te red nurse w h o has m o r e than just a f lair f o r paint ing. H e r w a t e r c o l o r s and o t h e r w o r k s have hung in a r t gal ler ies, she has a s tud io in t h e i r D u n s t a b l e h o m e , and she remains a r o c k in t h e B e r t F rede r i c k a d m i r a t i o n society.

As a p r o d i g y o f t h e late, g rea t Manny Francis, Be r t is in d e m a n d as a course des igner and ma in tenance manager. In o t h e r w o r d s , he wasn ' t o n t h e ou ts ide l ook i ng in w h e n Francis des igned and a ided in t h e c o n d i t i o n i n g process o f s o m e 25 N e w England go l f courses.

Francis, o f course, is t h e man c red i t ed w i t h d iscover ing t h e Vesper s t ra in o f bentgrass. Manny named it a f te r t h e c lub and Its popu la r i t y z o o m e d t o t h e po in t w h e r e ove r 8 0 N e w England courses are decked o u t in Vesper Velvet . 0 a r r e n P e r r y , W e n h a m C o u n t r y C l u b : " I suppose the d i f fe rence in ear ly w i n t e r s n o w cove r wasn ' t real ly a d i f fe rence at ail because o f t h e relat ively s n o w - f r e e w i n t e r w e had a year ago. But , yes, th is year ' s lack o f s n o w In D e c e m b e r and t h e f i rst par t o f January gave us s o m e unexpec ted t i m e t o w o r k outs ide.
" O f course, that lack of s n o w also meant t ha t w e had m o r e than the usual n u m b e r o f gol fers still playing deep in to D e c e m b e r and beyond, in fact, w e had a compara -t ive ly busy N e w Year's Day w e e k e n d here and even had a t o u r n a m e n t as an added a t t rac t ion . T h a t event , plus l o w inc idence o f f ros t f o r t ha t t i m e o f year, had m e keep t h e pins in until January 7. It could be tha t o u r real w i n t e r began then , because it

w i t h o u t apprec iab le measure o f s n o w a l l o w e d us t o concen t ra te o n t h e main tenance pro jec ts tha t cou ldn ' t get o u r a t ten t i on dur ing t h e summer . So, t h a t was a plus.
" T h e outs ide w o r k wasn ' t anyth ing major. It consisted o f t h e no rma l leaf remova l , c lear ing o u t o f dead t rees, drainage w o r k and general po l ice w o r k (debr is remova l ) all o v e r t h e course.
" O n c e t h e course was unde r inf luence o f apprec iab le s n o w in late January, o u r business re t rea ted t o t h e n o r m a l equ ip -m e n t and c lubhouse ma in tenance chores w h i c h occupy o u r w i n t e r mon ths .
" T h e w a y the w e a t h e r tu rns in w i n t e r doesn ' t af fect m y main tenance plans t o o much , since m y ob jec t i ve o n this job (I 've been on t h e course 10 years w i t h f o u r o f t h e m as head super) is t o a c c o m m o d a t e t h e m e m b e r s . That 's m y chief concern , t o see tha t the i r needs are m e t . T h a t means a l low ing t h e m t o play as long in to

" H o w e v e r , I 'm a N e e d h a m nat ive and I 'm fami l iar w i t h t h e lay o f t he land and w h a t e v e r a round here.
" M y of f -season schedule is so r t o f l im i ted because w e ca r ry a small c r e w in tha t per iod . Th is year, w i t h t h e n o - c o v e r condit ions a round a l i tt le longer than usual, w e delayed putt ing on green covers a couple o f weeks . H o w e v e r , t h e y w e r e in place by m i d - D e c e m b e r . T h a t pu t o u r gol fers on t e m p o r a r y greens and t h e y con t i nued playing unt i l t h e f i rs t s t o r m in mid-January.
" T h e off-season, on-course maintenance inc luded no rma l c lean-up w o r k and s o m e ref in ing o f bunkers . T h e main outs ide p ro jec t , t hough , was t o con t inue t h e concen t ra t i on on landscape incidentals.

"The: m e m b e r s here have been pleased w i t h t h e cosmet ics on t he approach t o t h e c lubhouse and sur round ing area. T h e r e f o r e , wh i l e w e still cou ld keep i m p r o v i n g that aspect of t he i r needs, w e d id a lo t o f c lean-out and spruce-up w o r k on t he clubhouse entrance island. In effect, w e w e r e in to some serious gardening.
' A f t e r that , t he a t ten t ion shi f ted inside w h e r e c lubhouse pro jects l ike l ocke r r o o m renovat ions and paint ing kep t us busy. As f o r t he no - snow p o r t i o n o f t he w in te r , I l ike it a lot. I 'd ra ther no t see any s n o w at all. W e don ' t need s n o w cover as a t u r f p ro tec to r . I t h ink o u r t u r f is t o u g h enough t o endu re t he w i n t e r co ld . So, t h e less s n o w cover t he bet ter . "

It gave m e a big p iece o f o u t d o o r t i m e t o d o s o m e o f t he th ings I w a n t e d t o do in p repara t ion f o r an i m p r o v e d gol f course in t h e spr ing and summer .
"Because o f t he w e a t h e r cond i t ions w e w e r e able t o dredge o u r b r o o k s and bu l ldoze a pond tha t was in need o f being c leaned ou t . Tha t t u r n e d ou t t o be a big par t o f o u r w i n t e r maintenance. T h a t and t r e e w o r k .
" W e ' r e a nice, n ine-hole pr ivate c lub w i t h m e m b e r s w h o really cher ish t h e course and the rest o f t he grounds. For some reason there has been a hassle about r e m o v i n g t rees. However , t he t rees have enc roached on t he gol f course, causing po ten t ia l p rob lems w i t h much -needed sunl ight and c i rcu lat ion a round o u r greens.
"Th i s w i n t e r I t h ink w e e l im ina ted one o f t hose p rob lems, a giant pine t r e e tha t was b lock ing o u t the sun and air at o u r # 2 green. T h a t green had no ear ly m o r n i n g sun and was a target f o r s t rong n o r t h w inds . But w e t o o k tha t t r e e d o w n and it has t o he lp br ing that green up t o snuff.
"Funny th ing about t he lack o f ear ly w i n t e r s n o w cover. It gave us a chance f o r m o r e t i m e outs ide bu t held us back on do ing t he things tha t are usually d o n e by now. W h i c h means by late January w e w e r e racing t o comp le te o u r chores such as br ing ing equ ipmen t back t o t o p f o r m . So, it 's so r t o f a Ca tch -22 si tuat ion.
