Pastoral Letter

Dearly beloved,

Gree�ngs in the sweet name of our Lord crucified and

resurrected! I am sure the Lent season is helping us to come

closer to God as well as pray more for our exam wri�ng children. I sincerely

wish that our children will write their exams well and score well. In these

days, let us con�nue to focus our thoughts on the crucified Christ and benefit

from it.

So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw

the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, say-

ing, "Truly this was the Son of God!" Ma8hew 27:54

There were many even*ul things that happened at the site of Jesus’

crucifixion. One of them was the confession and exclama�on of the Roman

Centurion that Jesus is truly the Son of God. The Centurion must have known

that Jesus was iden�fied with the �tle ‘Son of God’ at least during the trial

interroga�ons since his arrest the previous night, but may not have given it

a2en�on and least expected Jesus to be a divine person. The next day when

his team began the procedure of execu�ng the criminals on crosses, indeed

the strangely sacred things that were going on around Jesus’ cross must have

caused turbulence in his soul and conscience. All was not over when Jesus

gave up his spirit and died. Then arose stormy and scary, unusual and dra-

ma�c occurrences – thunder, earthquake and darkness for three hours, all

meant to be expressions of God’s anger on humanity. Finally, the Centurion

captured it right, Jesus to be divine, and he exclaimed ‘truly he was the Son

of God!”

There are final moments des�ned even for this earthly life in the end

days with catastrophes and scary signs in nature. In the last day, everything

will prove that the once-helpless on-the-cross Jesus is the Almighty God for-

ever. At that �me, all the people on earth, from the mighty to the weakest,

will come to know that Jesus is Lord. But on that day when things are over,

will we get chances in our life like today to happily do something for Jesus?

When the Centurion realized the truth, he did not get a chance to offer any-

thing to Jesus as he could have before the crucifixion when Jesus was alive.

The true followers and disciples of Jesus offered themselves to Jesus

when He was closely available to them on earth. Peter gave his boat, a li2le

boy his food, Zacchaeus surrendered his unrighteous life to Him, Nicodemus

courageously spoke in His favour in the Sanhedrin council and some others

le@ everything and followed Him. Think about that poor woman who broke

the costly ointment called nard and poured it upon Him. She could have used

it on Jesus probably a@er His death to anoint His body, but in her


preparedness, she sensed the opportunity instantly and anointed Jesus with

the costly nard when He was s�ll alive.

Our calling today is not to be mute listeners of Christ’s expecta�ons

and do nothing for Him or dodge the moments �ll the finishing line comes

but to be ac�ve par�cipants in His agenda on earth. Drawing strict lines and

surrendering the inner areas of life and taking sacrificial ac�ons of faith

should happen frequently in our lives which will mark this par�cipa�on.

Please pray for and par�cipate in the Vaca�on Bible School that is

coming up both in the English and Kannada languages. This year we are ex-

pec�ng more children from Priyanka Nagar slums as we have adopted the

area for Gospel work, reaching to all the families living there with the help of

the missionaries of COME ministries. I am sure many of the BMC families are

available here this year during Passion Week and Easter and I am expec�ng a

great �me of worshiping with you in the Church. Con�nue to pray for the full

recovery of Bro. Dennis who has miraculously survived a stroke.

Testimony – Mr Shibu

Psalm 77:14. You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among

the peoples.

It is to God always that the glory belongs for his kindness and love

that He showers upon the lives of His children. Looking back into our lives it is

clearly evident about the mastery of the grand weaver, using the threads of

circumstances and incidents in our lives, to bring out a purposefully cra@ed

life out of each one of us. It is no different to me in person and also together

with Annie, Joel and Jeremy as a family to be always at the receiving end of

the mercies from our Lord. It is nothing short of a miracle, once I look back

into my life, how he transformed me into what I am today enabling me to

stand on heights and sore like an eagle.

The founda�on of my faith was laid down by my mother who teaches

in Sunday school faithfully the last 40 years. I could s�ll very vividly remem-

ber my days even at the age of 4 or so going to Sunday school together with

her in the early mornings of Sundays. In the rainy seasons when our place

famous for backwaters gets filled by the downpour of blessings in every nook

and corner, we used to cross the overflowing streams using logs of woods

kept across the banks with a balancing act of body and mind over this narrow

piece of wood. I could remember the days even when studying at the fourth

standard not having electricity at home and dim evenings and nights lit by

smoke spiLng lamps of kerosene. Also the nights of fear over the possibility

of a cobra snake appearing above the head going along the coconut leaves

thatched hut roof. The daily long walks to reach the school through the roads

with loose stones wai�ng for a tar coa�ng s�ll pinning hopes on a false prom-

ise by a poli�cian renewed again for yet another �me latest on the last elec-

�on.

His gracious hands were there all along when being the first from the

family and maybe also from the church to be selected for engineering. To be

honest those days were not exactly lived like a person who knows the savior

personally but the master was s�ll weaving the threads!! It was on-

ly through a series of miracles and His clarity about me of what I would

change to in future that stopped this fragile body from falling into any sort of

serious sin or grave ma2er of regret which was in other ways not only ac-

ceptable but actually a ma2er of pride in my circle of friends. His faithfulness

and kindness is not only to the just but He who owns a thousand hills

shines His sun and showers His rain to both the just and unjust uncondi�onal-

ly with great and abounding love.

Subsequently he enabled me in geLng the job which I am con�nuing

the last 19 years, manage to travel to countries in Europe, coming from a

place where foreign land means only Gulf, and finally standing here where


God honored me the weak vessel to even proclaim His words to others and

being in the pulpit sharing His words. These are all pure miracles and total

mystery and like salva�on very difficult to understand.

In the midst of these tsunamis of miracles, I want to take a drop out

and narrate one incident which we as a family encountered when Jehovah

Jireh provided us the apartment. It was a long and frustra�ng search for me

and Annie for more than two years looking for a house to buy. We wanted to

honor God by taking a firm decision that we will not get into a transac�on

which is by any way compromising the rule of the land. To the many brokers

and landlords it was very much a strange thing and difficult fact to under-

stand as to why we want the whole transac�on to be carried out in white.

The looks and comments from these people clearly told us that actually

we were doing something wrong!! So many houses we liked and wanted to

buy but either the documents were not proper or the owner did not want full

white money. In the midst of these disappointments also as a family we were

very clear that if it is the will of the God we will get an owner who is willing to

do the transac�on completely in white. Annie used to tell that we will be able

to buy only if the owner is an income tax commissioner!! Finally to our pleas-

ant surprise that was what actually happened!!

The owner of the flat that we finally bought was a re�red income tax

commissioner who was at the age of 83. It is as if he had bought the apart-

ment for us and gave it to us at the right �me. He just stayed there for 4

months and took from us only the cost that he paid to the builder with a

small addi�onal amount to repay his outstanding debts when other owners

where charging much higher at the same apartment complex. .Praise God.

Nothing is impossible for our God and He will never disappoint his children if

we are ready to wait for him. Ini�ally we wanted to buy near Koramangala

but we couldn’t buy there. Many �mes we used to ques�on God why we are

not able to buy anything there. But now we understand that God’s plan is

different and it is always the best. It is perfectly placed very close to Annie’s

office and later even closer to Joel’s school. In 10 years’ �me the develop-

ment that has happened in the area is mind boggling which has also resulted

in very good apprecia�on of the property.

This incident that happened 10 years back again reminds me clearly

about the following fundamentals of Chris�an living (1) If you honor God, he

will honor you back double (2) God’s plan is not our plan, it is higher than

what we could ever imagine (3) The way of Chris�an living is not the way ma-

jority is living but definitely it is the best way to live our life (4) Short term

frustra�on is just a precursor for long term enjoyment (5) God can see the

future be2er and clearer than us, so it is always be2er to trust in Him rather

than trust in our understanding.

FOLLOWING HARD AFTER GOD

Him, that they may delight in His Presence, may taste and know the inner sweetness

of the very God Himself in the core and center of their hearts. This book is a modest

Chris�an theology teaches the doctrine of prevenient grace which

briefly stated means that before a man can seek God, God must first have

sought the man. We pursue God because, and only because, He has first put

an urge within us that spurs us to the pursuit. The impulse to pursue God

originates with God, but the out-working of that impulse is our following hard

a@er Him. In the warm language of personal feeling this is stated in the 42nd

psalm: As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O

God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

In our sad �mes, the whole transac�on of religious conversion has

been made mechanical and spiritless. Christ may be “received” without cre-

a�ng any special love for Him in the soul of the receiver and the man thus

“saved” is neither hungry nor thirsty a@er God. It is inherent in our personali-

ty to be able to know other personali�es, but full knowledge of another can-

not be achieved in one encounter. God is a Person, and in the deep of His

mighty nature He thinks, wills, feels, loves and suffers as any other person

may. He communicates with us through the avenues of our minds, our will

and our emo�ons. The con�nuous and unembarrassed interchange of love

and thought between God and the soul of the redeemed man is the throb-

bing heart of New Testament religion.

To have found God and s�ll to pursue Him is the soul’s paradox of

love. Come near to the holy men of the past and you will soon feel the heat

of their desire a@er God. They prayed and wrestled and sought Him day and

night, in season and out, and when they had found Him, the finding was all

the sweeter for the long seeking. David’s life was a torrent of spiritual desire,

and his psalms ring with the cry of the seeker and the glad shout of the find-

er. Paul confessed the mainspring of his life to be his burning desire a@er

Christ. How tragic that we in this dark day have our seeking done for us by

others. Everything is made to center upon the ini�al act of ‘accep�ng’ Christ

(a term, incidentally, which is not found in the Bible) and we are not expected

therea@er to crave any further revela�on of God to our souls.


In the midst of this great chill, there are some who will not be con-

tent with this shallowness; they want to taste, to touch with their hearts, to

see with their inner eyes the wonder that is God. I want deliberately to en-

courage this mighty longing a@er God. The lack of it has brought us to our

present low estate. The s�ff and wooden quality about our religious lives is

the result of our lack of holy desire. Complacency is the deadly foe of all spir-

itual growth. Acute desire must be present or there will be no manifesta�on

of Christ to His people. He waits to be wanted; too bad that with many of us

He waits so long, so very long, in vain.

The simplicity which is in Christ is rarely found among us. In its stead

are programs, methods, organiza�ons and a world of nervous ac�vi�es which

occupy �me and a2en�on but can never sa�sfy the longing of the heart. The

shallowness of our inner experience, the hollowness of our worship, and

that servile imita�on of the world which marks our promo�onal methods all

tes�fy that we in this day know God only imperfectly and the peace of God

scarcely at all. The evil habit of seeking ‘God-and’ effec�vely prevents us

from finding God in full revela�on. In the “and” lies our great woe. If we

omit the “and” we shall soon find God, and in Him we shall find that for

which we have all our lives been secretly longing.

We need not fear that in seeking God only we may narrow our lives

or restrict the mo�ons of our expanding hearts. Actually, the opposite is

true. When the Lord divided Canaan among the tribes of Israel, Levi received

no share of the land. God said to him simply, “I am thy part and thine inher-

itance,” and by those words made him richer than all his brethren, richer

than all the kings and rajas who have ever lived in the world. And there is a

spiritual principle here s�ll valid for every priest of the Most High God. The

man who has God for his treasure has all things in One. Many ordinary treas-

ures may be denied him, or if he is allowed to have them, the enjoyment of

them will be so tempered that they will never be necessary to his happiness.

If he must see them go one a@er one, he will scarcely feel a sense of loss, for

having the Source of all things he has in One all sa�sfac�on, all pleasure, all

delight. Whatever he may lose he has actually lost nothing, for he now has it

all in One, and he has it purely, legi�mately and forever. Belarus is officially called the Republic of Belarus. A@er seven decades as a cons�tuent

republic of the USSR, Belarus a2ained its independence in 1991. This country was a part

of the World War II, where there was mass murder of six million Jews led by the Nazi Ger-

man, Adolf Hitler. The Jewish popula�on of the country was devastated and never recov-

ered. The judicial system in Belarus lacks independence and is subject to poli�cal interfer-

ence. Corrupt prac�ces such as bribery o@en take place and na�onal ombudsman are

lacking in the country’s an�-corrup�on system. There is no official religion for the coun-

try; however sharing of one’s faith is restricted. While there is freedom of worship, there

is a lot of persecu�on against Chris�ans.

The ethnic groups include 93% Belarusians, 8.3% Russians, 3.1% Poles, 1.7% Ukrainians,

0.1% Jews and 3.1% other.

Mission: Vishwa Vani (www.vishwavani.org) In Tu�corin, Tamil Nadu, a group of believers used to pray with Dr. N. Emil Jebasingh for God’s

guidance to reach the radio audience, which is where this ministry was born on 1st

May 1980.

This is a ministry that focuses on the remote regions and villages of India where the people

are unreached. The ministry has many prayer cells to pray for the needy villages. Their first

strategy is ministry through na�ve workers. When this ministry was registered in 1987, there

were 42 workers, but now they have 3105 workers. Vishwa Vani has been able to reach most

of the villages in India; however, there are s�ll few more villages where God’s word has to be

taken. Vishwa Vani has many prayer cells where many people are constantly praying for the

unreached. Vishwa Vani is now an indigenous church plan�ng movement serving in 25 states

of India.

Vision Statement: To see the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ blessing villages in India.

Mission:To reach out 1,00,000 villages and 300 People Groups where the Spirit of God is

working to plant mul�plying, healthy, reproducing churches before 2020.

over the �mes when my callousness or smugness or indifference may have

slowed someone in their spiritual journey and I resolved once more just to be

genuine – with God and with others.)


Missionary Story – Mrs. Hannah Selvin

DAVID BRAINERD – Missionary to the Native Americans

David Brainerd (April 20, 1718–October 9, 1747) was an American

missionary to the Native Americans. In the twenty-nine years that he lived,

David Brainerd made a deeper and more lasting impression in the world than

most men make in a long lifetime. Though he was beset by many difficulties,

his deep longing after God and utter surrender to His will was

remarkable and the journal he maintained was published as a

biography two years after his death and became a source of

inspiration and encouragement to many Christians, turning

many ordinary men into great missionaries, to name just a few

who were inspired: William Carey, Henry Martyn, Jim Elliot

and many others.

David Brainerd was born on April 20, 1718, in Connecticut, the son of

Hezekiah, a legislator, and Dorothy. He had nine siblings. His father died

when he was fourteen and his mother died five years later. On 12 July 1739,

he recorded being converted, an experience of 'unspeakable glory' that

prompted to "seek first his Kingdom.”

Two months later, he enrolled at Yale. In his second year at Yale, he

was sent home because he was suffering from a serious illness that caused him

to spit blood. It is now believed that he was suffering from tuberculosis, the

disease which would lead to his death seven years later. When he returned to

Yale in November 1740, tensions were beginning to emerge between the fac-

ulty staff and the students as the staff considered the spiritual enthusiasm of

the students which had been prompted by visiting preachers such as George

Whitefield and others to be excessive. Brainerd was expelled because he had

privately commented that one of his tutors “has no more grace than a chair'

This episode grieved Brainerd, especially as a recent law forbade the

appointment of pastors unless they had graduated from Yale or a similar insti-

tution, meaning that he had to reconsider his plans for pastoral ministry. In

1742, Brainerd was licensed to preach by a group of evangelicals. As a result,

he gained the attention of other prominent Christian leaders who encouraged

him and it was suggested that Brainerd devote himself to missionary work

among the Native Americans.

On 1 April 1743, after a brief period of serving in a church, Brainerd

began working as a missionary to Native Americans, which he would continue

until late 1746 when worsening illness prevented him from working. In his

final years, he suffered from depression and was also affected by the difficul-

ties faced by other missionaries of the period such as loneliness and lack of

food. He worked in four different places among the Native Americans estab-

lishing


churches and he started a school for Native American children and began a

translation of the Psalms. Despite the difficulties he faced and offers to leave

the mission field, he recorded in his diary, “I could have no freedom in the

thought of any other circumstances or business in life: All my desire was the

conversion of the heathen, and all my hope was in God: God does not suffer

me to please or comfort myself with hopes of seeing friends and enjoying

worldly comforts'.

In November 1746, he became too ill to continue ministering, and so

moved to the home of Jonathan Edwards. He remained at Edwards' house until

his death the following year. In these final months, he suffered greatly. In his

diary entry for 24th September 1747, Brainerd wrote: 'In the greatest distress

that ever I endured, having an uncommon kind of cough; which either stran-

gled me or threw me into a straining to vomit'. During this time, he was cared

for by Jerusha Edwards, Jonathan's seventeen-year-old daughter. He died from

tuberculosis on 9 October 1747, at the age of 29. Sadly, Jerusha contracted

tuberculosis while caring for him and died just 4 months later. A grief stricken

Jonathan Edwards, at the funeral service of his beloved daughter called her

“the flower of the family.”

Jonathan Edwards pored over the writings of David Brainerd and was

struck by the sincerity and single-minded devotion of the young man and de-

cided to compile his writings. Much of Brainerd's influence on future genera-

tions can be attributed to the biography compiled by Jonathan Edwards and

first published in 1749, the Life and Diary of David Brainerd. Given below

are a few of Brainerd’s diary writings:

“In my morning devotions, my soul bitterly mourned over my exceeding sinful-

ness and vileness. I never before had felt so pungent and deep a sense of the

odious nature of sin, as at this time. My soul was then unusually carried forth

in love to God, and I spent some time in self-examination, to find the truth of

grace, as also my fitness to approach God.”

"I felt my soul hungering and thirsting after righteousness and then my soul

was filled with light and love, so that I was almost in an ecstasy; my body was

so weak, I could scarcely stand. I felt at the same time an exceeding tenderness

and most fervent love towards all mankind, and my soul longed for perfect

grace and glory. O! one hour with God infinitely exceeds all the pleasures and

delights of this lower world.”

“I care not where I go, or how I live, or what I endure so that I may save

souls. When I sleep, I dream of them; when I awake they are first in my

thoughts. Never think you can live to God by your own power or strength, but

always look to and rely on him for assistance.”

Clyde Kilby summarized Brainerd's influence as being based on the fact that,

'in our timidity and our shoddy opportunism we are always stirred when a man

appears on the horizon willing to stake his all on a conviction.’


PARENTS’ SECTION What kind of discipline is appropriate for my six-month-old son?

No direct discipline is necessary for a child under seven months of age, re-gardless of behaviour or circumstances. Many parents do not agree and find themselves “swatting” a child of six months for wiggling while being diapered or for crying in the midnight hours. This is a mistake. A baby this young is incapable of comprehending this “offense” or associating it with the resulting punishment. At this early age, he needs to held, loved, and most important, to hear a soothing human voice. He should be fed when hungry and kept clean and dry and warm. In essence, it is probable that the foundation for emotional and physical health is laid during the first year which should be characterized

by security, affection and warmth.

I have a very fussy eight-month-old baby who cries whenever I put her down. My pediatrician says she is healthy and that she cries just be-cause she wants me to hold her all the time. I do give her a lot of atten-tion, but I simply can’t keep her on my lap all day long. How can I make

her less fussy?

The crying of infants is an important form of communication. Through their tears we learn of their hunger, fatigue or discomfort from a wet diaper, etc. Thus it is important to listen to those calls for help and interpret them accord-ingly. On the other hand, your pediatrician is right. It is possible to create a fussy demanding baby by rushing to pick her up every time she utters a whim-per or sigh. Infants are fully capable of learning to manipulate their parents through a process called reinforcement, whereby any behaviour that produces a pleasant result will tend to recur. Thus, a healthy baby can keep her mother tied to her all the time. To avoid this consequence, it is important to strike a balance between giving your baby the attention she needs and establishing her as a tiny dictator. Don’t be afraid to let her cry a reasonable period of time (which is thought to be healthy to the lungs), although it is necessary to listen to the tone of her voice for the difference between random discontent and

genuine distress. Most mothers learn to recognize this distinction in time.
