Understanding My ValueTo My Church Community

Laura Humphries, Parish Life Coordinator

~ Question of the Week ~MARK 4: 26-34

How does God speak to methrough creation?

FEAST DAY: June 22PATRON SAINT OF: Lawyers

REMEMBERING OUR SAINTS

St. Thomas More was born at London in 1478. After athorough grounding in religion and the classics, heentered Oxford to study law. Upon leaving the universityhe embarked on a legal career which took him toParliament. In 1505, he married his beloved Jane Coltwho bore him four children, and when she died at ayoung age, he married a widow, Alice Middleton, to bea mother for his young children.

A wit and a reformer, this learned man numberedBishops and scholars among his friends, and by 1516wrote his world-famous book “Utopia”. He attracted theattention of Henry VIII who appointed him to asuccession of high posts and missions, and finally madehim Lord Chancellor in 1529. However, he resigned in1532, at the height of his career and reputation, whenHenry persisted in holding his own opinions regardingmarriage and the supremacy of the Pope.

The rest of his life was spent in writing mostly in defenseof the Church. In 1534, with his close friend, St. JohnFisher, he refused to render allegiance to the King asthe Head of the Church of England and was confinedto the Tower. Fifteen months later, and nine days afterSt. John Fisher’s execution, he was tried and convictedof treason. He told the court that he could not go againsthis conscience and wished his judges that “we may yethereafter in heaven merrily all meet together toeverlasting salvation.” And on the scaffold, he told thecrowd of spectators that he was dying as “the King’sgood servant-but God’s first.” He was beheaded onJuly 6, 1535. His feast day is June 22nd.

St. Thomas More’s stained glass window is located onthe south side of the church.

IS GOD CALLING YOU?Have you ever felt like God was calling you to walkwith someone else on their spiritual journey? If so theDiocese of Little Rock School of Spiritual Directionmight be for you. SOW THE SEEDMustard. What does the word bring to your mind?Probably a thick, yellow, spicy sauce in a jar. In today’s

Gospel Jesus talks aboutanother kind of mustard. Thisblack mustard plant was notcultivated in Jesus’ time and wasconsidered a weed. Like allvarieties of mustard, the blackmustard plant grows from a verytiny seed, no bigger than twomillimeters in diameter. Yet,

given the right conditions, it can grow up to nine feettall—certainly tall enough for birds to perch and nestin. Jesus says that the reign of God is like the mustardplant. It starts with the tiniest of seeds in the ground.Sun and rain do their work and a large plant shootsup, almost as big as a tree! So it is with our discipleshipand our stewardship. If we start in even the smallestway to trust in God, that leads to more commitment inour discipleship. We nurture our spiritual growththrough prayer, the sacraments, Bible study, and adultclasses, which leads to a stronger faith. That in turnhelps us to live less fearfully and selfishly. The use ofour spare time, personal skills and abilities, andfinancial resources takes on a different meaning. These are the fruits of our discipleship to share withothers. Time and time again, those among us whohave made their commitment to a more faithfuldiscipleship tell us they become more generousstewards of what God has given them. The more theygive the more they want to give. They have foundthat when you cease to holding on tightly to yourselfand your possessions, more blessings come yourway—not solutions to all problems or sudden riches, but a much deeper sense of God’s presence and truepeace of heart.
