THE LIFE OF AN ARTIS
My name is Pablo Ruiz Picasso, and I was born in Malaga in 1881.
My father was an art teacher, and I loved painting and drawing.
When I was 14, I made this drawing of The Firts Comunionof my sister. And this Portrait of Aunt Pepa.
When I was 19, I wentt o Par i s w i th my fr i endCarlos Casagemas .
There we knew theworks , scup l tures andpa i n t i ngs of the“modern i s t ” art i s ts .
We learned a l o t ! !
My friend Carlos died, and I was really sad. I wanted to express all this sadness…What colour could express how sad I was?
Findout!
In this BLUE PERIOD, I painted long, lonely and sadpeople, homeless…
And everything wasblue
Two sisters (1902)
The old guitarist (1903)
Breakfast of a blind man (1903)
Can you
feel the
sadness?
Sometime later,
I felt in
LOVE and
started painting
everything in
pink.
In this period, I
also painted lots
of things related
to the CIRCUS:
harlequins,
acrobats…
One day I visited a museum of Africanart, and I loved it…
I started to
make
things
similar to
the
AFRICAN
MASKS
I had seen.
Can you see they are
similar??
All the influences leaded me to paint a very important picture (or so they say):
Les
Demoisselles
D’Avignon
With the help of my friedn
George Braque, we invented a
new way of painting things:
CUBISMWe began painting figures that
were made up of cubes,
spheres, cylinders, cones, and
other geometric shapes.
Three Musicians
I also made some portraits, painting the
faces from the front and from one side at
the same time. So I put the eyes, mouths
and noses where I wanted.
There was a Civil War in Spain, and
my friends told me the dissasters of
war. Inspired on this, I painted
“The Guernica”.
When World War II started, I moved to the south of France, and started painting as a child, thanks to the sun, and the sea.
One of my
drawings became
the mundial simbol
for PEACE.
I was very famous and popular, and lots of
people came to see me. So I moved to a
castle far away form people.
I died in 1973, when I was 92.
During my life I said things like:
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up”
“Everything you can imagine is real”
“I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them”
“I'd like to live as a poor man with lots of money”
