WALTER SCOTT ASKS ...

WALTER SCOTT’S

What enticed you about Tyrant? I had just finished The Good Wife and I really didn’t want to jump into something right away, but that’s the way it is in acting: It’s feast or famine. This was far off the map from The Good Wife; the world was so different. Does the fact that it’s set in the Middle East make it more interesting? We have actors who are Iranian, Yemeni, Israeli, Palestinian and British. You meet wonderful, talented people from countries that have big problems, and we’re all here doing the show, which reflects those complications. So on that level, for me, it’s a real education. On The Good Wife, do you think your character, Peter, ended up where he deserved? What I thought was great was the fact that we ended where we began: on that podium, with him resigning, defending his integrity and proclaiming his innocence. Is climate change still your major cause? Yes. Before I left for Buda-pest [for filming Tyrant], we had a big benefit for the Rainforest Action Network, raising about $100,000. I think it’s the most impor-tant issue facing all of us, especially if you have kids. Would you be up for another Sex and the City movie? Everybody asks that. I have no idea whatsoever, but it was a glorious time when we did it.

CHRIS NOTHThe Wisconsin native, 61, has been a solid presenceon TV’s Law & Order, Sex and the City and The Good Wife. Now he joins the cast ofTyrant, beginning its third season July 6 on FX, as Gen. William Cogswell, who is sent to a Middle Eastern

country to representAmerican interests and advise its new president.

What has Elizabeth Mitchell been doing since she finished Once Upon a Time? —Joe C., Chickasha, Okla.

A: The queen of sci-fi—Lost, V and Revolution—is hot right now with two new projects. In Dead of Summer, airing Tuesday nights on TV’s Disney-owned Freeform network, Mitchell, 46, plays the owner of a summer camp where something is not right—cue the scary music! And she’s a U.S. senator who wants to eliminate deadly Purge Night in The Purge: Election Year, the third chapter of the popular horror franchise, now in theaters. C

Why did Noth almost turn down Tyrant? Go to Parade.com/tyrant to find out.

I definitely plan to see Kevin Hart in his new movie, Central

Intelligence. He always makes me laugh. Who makes him laugh?

—Miranda H., Evanston, Ind.A: Hart, who turns 37 on July 6 and voices Snowball the bunny in The Secret Life of Pets, in theaters July 8, says the two funniest people he knows are his kids: daughter Heaven, 11, who does impressions of her father, and son Hendrix, 8, a prankster. But when it comes to pros, he says, “I wouldn’t be do-ing comedy if it wasn’t for Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy, [who] broke down barriers for all of us.”

OPRAH GOESTO CHURCHOprah Winfrey, 62,

continues her exploration

of religion and spirituality

in Greenleaf, airing

Wednesday nights on her

OWN network, about a

family running a scandalous

Southern megachurch. She

produces and acts—as

Mavis McCready, a wise

and compassionate aunt—

in the drama. Here are five

facts you may not know

about the media mogul.

1. Winfrey was named “Orpah”

after a woman in the Bible’s

Book of Ruth, but people

mispronounced it and she

became “Oprah.”

2. She has voiced several

animated characters, including

Gussie the Goose in Charlotte’s

Web and Eudora, the

mother of Princess

Tiana, in The

Princess and the

Frog.

3. At age 17, she won the

Miss Black Tennessee beauty

pageant.

4. She is the first black female

billionaire and the world’s

richest African-American

woman.

5. She considers starting the

Oprah Winfrey Leadership

Academy for Girls in South

Africa one of her greatest

accomplishments.

Understand the danger your grandchild faces from whooping cough. It’s a highly contagious disease that can be

especially serious—even fatal—for infants. Unfortunately, many people who spread it may not know they have it.

If you have a new grandchild or one on the way, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about ways you can help protect

yourself and your family from whooping cough, including getting vaccinated.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone, including those around babies,

make sure their whooping cough vaccination is up to date.

Visit BigBadCough.com/print to learn more.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if a whooping cough vaccination is right for you and your family.

The new movie puts an all-

female spin on the ’80s premise

with a comedic cast led by

Melissa McCarthy, Kristen

Wiig and Saturday Night Live co-stars Kate McKinnon and

Leslie Jones. They’re joined by

Chris Hemsworth—as a hilari-

ous “himbo” receptionist—and

original Ghostbusters stars Bill

Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie

Hudson, Sigourney Weaver

and Annie Potts.

“When I decided to do this,

what swayed me was the idea

that I could do it with funny

women,” says director Paul

Feig, who struck comic gold

with Wiig and McCarthy in

Bridesmaids and teamed up

with McCarthy again for TheHeat and Spy.

Feig started with relative

newcomer McKinnon, 32, who

is best known to audiences

for her spot-on impression of

presidential hopeful Hillary

Clinton on SNL. “I’d heard an

interview where Kate said one

of her dreams in life was to be

a Ghostbuster,” Feig says. “Her

natural energy is so funny.

She’s such a lovely, funny

weirdo.”

McKinnon’s wry, deadpan

delivery was a perfect fit for

her character, a MacGyver-

esque particle physicist who

crafts a clever solution for

every challenge. Jones, 48,

predicts audiences will be

charmed by McKinnon. “She’s

the one you watch and say, ‘I

want to be her friend,’ ” she

says admiringly.

McCarthy thinks audiences

will love Jones too, as a

Metropolitan Transporta-

tion Authority worker

who joins the team. “She’s

a runaway train with no

apologies and the softest,

chewiest center,” says her

co-star.

Feig says that Wiig, 42,

has a “comedic energy . . .

on the razor’s edge of hold-

ing it together, in a funny

way” that was perfect for her

character. She plays a univer-

sity professor embarrassed by

her past as a researcher of the

paranormal who has parted

ways with her nerdy friend

and former research partner,

played by McCarthy.

Like their characters,

McCarthy and Wiig are

longtime real-life pals. They

both started out around the

same time at the Groundlings,

the legendary improv-comedy

theater in Los Angeles. That

friendship is at the heart of

the movie, says McCarthy,

45. “That and sticking to your

beliefs and not worrying about

what other people think of

you, which I think everybody

could use a little more of.”

The women all admit that

making Ghostbusters, mostly

shot in and around Boston,

was great fun. But getting

“slimed”—sprayed, splashed

and drenched in green goo—

was not. “At first, they were all,

‘When are we getting slimed?’ ”

Feig recalls of the supernatural

ectoplasm that takes on a life

of its own. “I warned them that

it wouldn’t be fun.”

“When I first read the script,

I thought, That’s such a funny running joke,” says Wiig, whose

character is a favorite target of

the ghostly gloop. She quickly

changed her mind. “It’s not

something you shower off.

In fact, water activates it. So

whenever you shower for the

next three days, you still kind

of feel it.”

McCarthy tried to find out

what the slime was made of.

“No one would answer that

question,” she says. “It was al-

ways a bunch of people in masks

saying, ‘Oh, it’s perfectly safe.’

Well, I didn’t even ask if it was

safe, I asked what it was. They’re

in hazmat gear and Kristen’s

getting it blown in her face.”

“I know one of the major

ingredients is tapioca flour,”

Feig says. “My tech guys were

like, ‘You can eat it!’ ”Not that anyone was in-

clined to do that.

“It’s still living somewhere,

bubbling under the sewers,”

Wiig says ominously.

“It’s alive in Boston, for

sure,” says McCarthy. “It’ll be

its own movie.”

Some scenes called for tricky

stunts that required flying

around in harnesses, with spe-

cial effects put in around the

actresses later.

Flying involved the very

real risk of kerbanging into

someone else. “It’s not just

CGI ghosts flying around,”

says Wiig. “It’s stunt people on

stilts and wires. A lot of those

ghosts are real people.”

“We all loved to see how

hard we could push ourselves,”

says McCarthy, who had the reputation for being game to try

anything.

“Melissa’s always the one

who wants to do the most

dangerous stunts,” says

Feig. “I have to sidle up

to her and say, ‘You know,

you could kill yourself.’

But that’s what I love

about this cast. You see

how much they embrace

it, how much they want

to do, and you’re like, why

aren’t more women being

given these roles?”

McCarthy hopes that’s a

question her own daughters,

Vivian, 9, and Georgie, 6,

never need to ask and predicts

they’ll find the fact that this

film’s Ghostbusters are women

totally unremarkable.

“That’s the thing I’m prob-

ably proudest of: that they

wouldn’t think, Oh, they’re women! They’d just think,

They’re scientists and they’re fighting ghosts,” says McCarthy.

“We just had a discussion that

there’s never been a female

president. And both of my girls

were like, ‘That’s crazy! That

can’t be true!’ And I’m like,

‘Nope, there has never been a

female president, and Barack

Obama is the first African-

American president.’ They

didn’t get it.

“I like the thought of them

going to this movie and

thinking, Of course, I can do anything! ”

Do you get discouraged when you

hear your telephone ring? Do you

avoid using your phone because

hearing difficulties make it hard to

understand the person on the other

end of the line? For many Americans

the telephone conversation – once

an important part of everyday life

– has become a thing of the past.

Because they can’t understand what

is said to them on the phone, they’re

often cut off from friends, family,

doctors and caregivers. Now, thanks

to innovative technology there is

finally a better way.

A simple idea… made possible

with sophisticated technology.

If you have trouble understanding

a call, the Captioning Telephone

can change your life. During a

phone call the words spoken

to you appear on the phone’s

screen – similar to closed

captioning on TV. So when

you make or receive a call, the

words spoken to you are not only

amplified by the phone, but scroll

across the phone so you can

listen while reading everything

that’s said to you. Each call is

routed through a call center, where

computer technology – aided by

a live representative – generates

voice-to-text translations. The

captioning is real-time, accurate

and readable. Your conversation

is private and the captioning

service doesn’t cost you a penny.

Captioned Telephone Service (CTS) is

regulated and funded by the Federal

Communications Commission (FCC)

and is designed exclusively for

individuals with hearing loss. In order

to use CTS in your home, you must

have standard telephone service and

high-speed Internet connectivity

where the phone will be used.

Callers do not need special

equipment or a captioning

phone in order to speak

with you.

Finally… a phone you

can use again. The

Captioning Telephone is

also packed with features

to help make phone calls easier.

The keypad has large, easy to use

buttons. You get adjustable volume

amplification along with the ability

to save captions for review later. It

even has an answering machine that

provides you with the captions of

each message.

See for yourself with our

exclusive home trial. Try the

Captioning Telephone in your

own home and if you are not

completely amazed, simply

return it within 60-days for a

refund of the product purchase

price. It even comes with a

5-year warranty.

The Captioning Telephone is intended for use by people with hearing loss. In purchasing a Captioning Telephone, you acknowledge

that it will be used by someone who cannot hear well over a traditional phone. 811

Ask MarilynBy Marilyn vos Savant

Everything we manufacture comes from the Earth. Why are these resources hazardous to the planet when they're returned to the Earth in the form of trash?

— W. White, Seattle, Wash.

Some resources are transformed in the manufacturing process: Their molecular structure is changed. In those cases, we re-turn unnatural substances to the Earth. This now-foreign matter may damage plants, animals, land and the atmosphere. Not that the natural world doesn’t produce its own toxins and rou-tinely damage the environment via events such as volcanic erup-tions, earthquakes and fires. But humans are adding to the destruction in many ways.

Sunday With...

SCOTT PELLEY

It’s hard to imagine Scott Pelley, 58, has any downtime. He’s been

the anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News since

2011—in fact, June 6 marked his fifth anniversary in that role. He

also has been a full-time correspondent for 60 Minutes since 2004.

A former war reporter and White House correspondent, he’s won a

slew of awards for his worldwide reporting, from Iraq to Antarctica.

Life has slowed down a little now that he and wife Jane are empty

nesters (son Reece, 24, works in Washington, D.C., and daughter

Blair, 21, is a college senior), which is why he has time on Sundays to

sail near his home in Connecticut.

You’re covering the conventions this month. What do you think will be the big stories? How does

Hillary Clinton co-opt Bernie

Sanders’ support, which she so

desperately needs? His people

are the bedrock of the Demo-

cratic Party—young people,

women, Independents. She has

to have those voters.

Will there be any breakout stars at the conventions? I want to

see what role Paul Ryan will

have. He is a rising star within

the Republican Party. The ques-

tion is, will Trump outshine all

the rising stars and make this a

convention just about him? As

for the Democrats, you might

see a starring role for one or

both of the Castro brothers

[ Joaquin represents Texas’ 20th

congressional district in the U.S.

Congress; identical twin Julián

is the Secretary of Housing and

Urban Development].

You covered the conventions in 2012. What was most challeng-ing? Hearing! It is a tectonic

roar inside the convention halls;

you cannot hear a thing. I had to

have CBS audio engineers con-

struct a set of headphones for me

just so I could hear myself on the

broadcast and hear myself think.

The other challenge is to see how

the undercurrents are changing

the politics in the room at the

time. The last two conventions

there was no drama; this year is

going to be very different. It’s

going to be something few living

reporters have seen before.

How has your work on the board of the International Rescue Committee affected your thinking on the refugee crisis in Europe? One very influential

thing in my early life was reading

The Grapes of Wrath. It’s about my

people, the Okies in the Dust

Bowl, moving to California, but

it’s really a parable for all times

about the dispossessed. You can

replace the Joad family name

with Sarif, and you’re in Syria. In

our country, which is inhabited

almost exclusively by refugees

of one kind or another, I think

we need to keep those doors

open. We need to have safety,

of course; it’s a new age since

9/11. But how can your heart

not break? America is the most

generous country in the world.

I believe very strongly in having

a humanitarian heart when it

comes to refugees.

Has being an empty nester changed your life? My wife was

a single mom for years. When I

would go to Afghanistan, Iraq,

the Arctic, the Antarctic, everywhere on earth, I would be

gone for a long time. So this has been a wonderful opportu-

nity for us to be in love and share the world. Now she comes

with me on my 60 Minutes assignments overseas. We’ve

been married for 35 years, which is a really good start and

says a lot about her patience. I recommend it.

What’s it like to anchor breaking news? It’s like trying to

conduct an orchestra. You have all these correspondents and

sources of information and sources of video and you’re on

the air live, sometimes for many hours, and you’re trying to

stitch together a narrative off the top of your head. That is

frankly the most fun I have.

SUNDAY ROUTINEI work in a very high-pressure, high-technology world, and sailing allows me to step off into a 12th-century world with ancient technology. It forces me to be patient and it turns down all the noise in the world. All you hear is the sound of the wind in the canvas (or these days the carbon fiber) and the sea rushing by the hull. It’s a wonder-ful thing.

FORBIDDEN FOOD I gave up pancakes years ago and I still regret it. I carefully follow a diet that is probably outlawed by the Geneva Convention. But it’s been very, very good for me.

FAVORITE AUTHORI’m an enormous fan of John McPhee. He’s writ-ten more than 25 books, all of them nonfiction but with a wonderful literary style. I just finished his Annals of the Former World, an appraisal of the geology of North America.
