Today we have the opportunity to celebrate as a Solemnity the Nativity of John the Baptist. The story of John the Baptist is nearly as dramatic as that of his cousin, Jesus of Nazareth. While not a divine conception, Jesus’ was, the circumstances of John’s birth were not at all usual. He was born to parents well beyond the age of childbearing. His mother Elizabeth, a cousin of the Blessed Virgin Mary, had always been unable to have a child and, in those times, for a married woman to be childless was considered a curse from God. When the Archangel Gabriel announces to Mary that she has been chosen to be the mother of the Savior, he also informs her that her cousin Elizabeth is also with child. So great is Mary’s joy that she rushes off to be at Elizabeth’s side. From their conception, the fates of Jesus and John the Baptist were very closely intertwined. John, as he grew to maturity, saw his mission as that of announcing the coming Messiah and of calling people to reform their lives in order to receive the coming Christ. It’s hard for us to imagine the incredible charisma he must have had. Dressed in animal skins, eating locusts and wild honey, and living in the desert, John attracted hundreds of people who came to hear him preach and be baptized by him. St. John, like Jesus, gathered around himself many devoted disciples. The attention John was drawing eventually reached the ears of evil King Herod who, in secret, came out to hear him. At one point, John boldly condemned Herod’s marriage as both incestuous and adulterous, because Herod’s wife, Herodias, was also the wife of Herod’s brother Philip. This enraged Herodias who then plotted to get rid of John. Her opportunity came at a birthday party for Herod when the daughter of Philip and Herodias, a girl named Salome, was asked to dance before the guests. So pleased was Herod with her dancing that, in his drunken state, he promised her anything she wanted. Salome ran to her mother to consult about what she should ask for. Her mother responded: ‘Ask for the head of John the Baptist on a platter.’ Herod’s dilemma was like that of so many sinners. He knew very well that John the Baptist was a holy man and a great prophet, for he himself had heard him speak. And he certainly knew that to kill him would be a very evil act. But his lust and pride got the best of him, and he ordered John beheaded in prison. John’s disciples immediately came and took the body. From the very first years of the Christian era, John’s tomb was a place of devotion and his feast is one of the oldest on our liturgical calendar. Jesus once called John “a burning and shining lamp” for the fervor of his faith in the Messiah and the light he shed for others in guiding them to Christ. Fr. Ulysses

Hoy tenemos la oportunidad de celebrar como Solemnidad el Nacimiento de San Juan Bautista. La historia de Juan Bautista es igualmente dramático como la de su primo, Jesús de Nazaret. Juan nació de padres mayores de edad. Su madre Isabel, prima de la Virgen María, siempre había sido estéril, y, en aquellos tiempos, para una mujer casada no tener hijos se

consideraba una maldición de Dios. Cuando el arcángel Gabriel anunció a María que ella ha sido elegida para ser la madre del Salvador, también le informa que su prima Isabel estaba encinta. Tan grande era la alegría de María que ella se va corriendo para estar al lado de Isabel. Desde su concepción, el destino de Jesús y el de Juan Bautista estaban muy relacionados. Juan, cuando llegó a ser adulto, vio su misión como la de anunciar la venida del Mesías y de llamar a la gente a reformar sus vidas a fin de recibir la venida de Cristo. Es difícil para nosotros imaginar el increíble carisma que él debe haber tenido. Vestido en pieles de

animales, comiendo saltamontes y miel silvestre, viviendo en el desierto, John atrajo a cientos de personas que acudieron a escuchar su predicación y a ser bautizados por él. San Juan, como Jesús, reunió para sí mismo muchos discípulos fieles. La atención que Juan estaba recibiendo finalmente llegó a los oídos del malvado rey Herodes, que, en secreto, vino a oírlo. En un momento dado, John condenó audazmente el matrimonio de Herodes ya que era incestuoso y adúltero, porque la esposa de Herodes, Herodías, fue también la esposa del hermano de Herodes, Filipo. Esto enfureció a Herodías que luego conspiró para matar a Juan. Su oportunidad llegó en una fiesta de cumpleaños para Herodes cuando el insistió que bailaba para los invitados la hija de Felipe y Herodías, una joven llamada Salomé. Él sabía muy bien que Juan Bautista era un hombre santo y un gran profeta, porque él mismo le había oído hablar. Y desde luego sabía que matarlo sería un acto muy malo. Pero su lujuria y su orgullo ganó, y Herodes ordenó que arrestaran a Juan y luego lo decapitaron en la cárcel. Los discípulos de Juan inmediatamente vinieron y llevaron su cuerpo. Desde los primeros años de la era cristiana, la tumba de Juan era un lugar de devoción y su fiesta es uno de los más antiguos en nuestro calendario litúrgico. Jesús llamó una vez a Juan "una lámpara que ardía y alumbraba" por el fervor de su fe en el Mesías y la luz que se derramó por los demás para guiarlos a Cristo. Padre Ulises

VOLUNTEER DRIVERS NEEDED Second Harvest Food Bank is seeking volunteers to deliver bags of groceries twice a month to needy or disabled seniors of our area. Distribution site is Fair Oaks Community Center, 2600 Middlefield Rd. Redwood City. We need volunteers for one Friday every other month, requiring about 1 hour of your time.
