Twenty�Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time �

“…….the spirit of wisdom came to me. I preferred her to scepter and throne, and deemed riches nothing in
comparison with her…..” Wisdom 7:8�
�
Solomon speaks eloquently about wisdom. The imagery in the Book of Wisdom invites us to consider that Wisdom
is more precious than gold. Wisdom is demonstrated in righteousness. It is expressed in the dream of Solomon in the
3rd
Chapter of the 1st
Book of Kings. Solomon asks for a heart to understand and to discern between good and evil.
These words of Solomon are inspiring, however after construction of the temple, Solomon experienced a decline.
He became rich and he had many foreign wives. Ultimately his heart turned away from God. �
�
We hear in the Gospel this week the story of the man when encountering Jesus was asked by Jesus to sell what he had
and give to the poor. The man went away sad for he had many possessions. �
�
The readings this week suggest that there is a relationship between righteousness, a sense of living under God’s
direction, and that having many shapes our relationship with God. A number of scholars suggest one of the messages
in the Old Testament is when we forget the poor, we forget God and vice versa. �
�
In our Catholic Social Teaching, we understand that we are obliged to share what we have. Pope Francis in his
Encyclical Fratelli Tutti reminds us of this teaching.�
�
118. The world exists for everyone, because all of us were born with the same dignity. Differences of colour, religion,
talent, place of birth or residence, and so many others, cannot be used to justify the privileges of some over the rights
of all. As a community, we have an obligation to ensure that every person lives with dignity and has sufficient
opportunities for his or her integral development.�
�
119. In the first Christian centuries, a number of thinkers developed a universal vision in their reflections on the
common destination of created goods.[91]�This led them to realize that if one person lacks what is necessary to live
with dignity, it is because another person is detaining it. Saint John Chrysostom summarizes it in this way: “Not to
share our wealth with the poor is to rob them and take away their livelihood. The riches we possess are not our own,
but theirs as well”.[92]�In the words of Saint Gregory the Great, “When we provide the needy with their basic needs,
we are giving them what belongs to them, not to us”.[93]�
A good application of the Pope’s teaching is the pandemic. We are in a new phase of the pandemic as vaccines are
available. It gives me a sense of satisfaction to know that our country is sharing the vaccines with the world
especially in poor countries. It gives me sense of concern when vaccines designated for the United States are not
used. One could say that the most significant reason to take the vaccine is for the sake of the common good.
The more people are vaccinated the more we will be assured of the health of every one.�
�
We live in a society that teaches us that the more we have the happier we will be. Scripture teaches us the exact
opposite. We are happiest when we share. Perhaps today as we reflect on the scriptures we can be inspired to share
what we have recognizing that to the extent that we do this, we come closer to the Lord. �
�
………….a word about priest personnel in our parish.�
A number of people have asked me when we will get a new vicar. The answer is not at the present time. The
shortage of priests is having an effect on our parish. I have a list of retired priests who are available to help in
parishes. As I made my calls to ask for help I was surprised that most of the priests on the list already have
commitments. I will continue to make calls, knowing that most pastors are in the same situation, lots of Masses but
less priests. This reminds us that our life as a parish community is more and more dependent on the people of the
parish. A time goes on, I am committed to looking for ways to structure more involvement and ask for more
commitment. This is no longer a sign of the Church of the future but a sign of the present Church. �

Living for Eternal Life. Let us put ourselves into the gospel story
today. All of us want to “inherit eternal life.” All of us strive to do
what God commands, to do what is right and just. All of us strive to
not let the things we have possess us. But it is hard going �
impossible without reliance on God. This eternal life for which we
long, this Kingdom of God in which we live now, is begun already in
us and is fulfilled in completeness when we see God face�to�face for
ever. �
What gets in my way of gaining eternal life � things, attitudes,
behaviors? �
What mercy work will I do that lets me share what I have with
someone in need? �
How will I follow Jesus more closely this week? �
�
BAPTISMAL PREPARATION CLASS�
We will be restarting our Baptismal Preparation Classes on Fridays at 7pm. All parents/
godparents wanting to baptize in St. John’s will now be required to attend the class. �
Couples are required to come in to the office to register for the class. �

“……el espíritu de sabiduría vino a mí. La preferí al cetro y al trono, y no consideré ninguna �
riqueza en comparación con ella ...” Proverbios 7:8�

Salomón habla elocuentemente sobre la sabiduría. Las imágenes del Libro de la Sabiduría nos invitan a considerar que la
Sabiduría es más preciosa que el oro. La sabiduría se demuestra en la justicia. Se expresa en el sueño de Salomón en el
tercer capítulo del primer libro de los Reyes. Salomón pide un corazón para comprender y discernir entre el bien y el
mal. Estas palabras de Salomón son inspiradoras, sin embargo, después de la construcción del templo, Salomón
experimentó un declive. Se hizo rico y tuvo muchas esposas extranjeras. Al final, su corazón se apartó de Dios.�
�
Escuchamos en el Evangelio de esta semana la historia del hombre cuando Jesús le pidió a Jesús que vendiera lo que
tenía y se lo diera a los pobres. El hombre se fue triste porque tenía muchas posesiones.�
�
Las lecturas de esta semana sugieren que existe una relación entre la justicia, el sentido de vivir bajo la dirección de
Dios, y que tener muchos moldea nuestra relación con Dios. Varios eruditos sugieren que uno de los mensajes del
Antiguo Testamento es cuando nos olvidamos de los pobres, nos olvidamos de Dios y viceversa.�
�
En nuestra Doctrina Social Católica, entendemos que estamos obligados a compartir lo que tenemos. El Papa Francisco
en su Encíclica Fratelli Tutti nos recuerda esta enseñanza.�
�
118. El mundo existe para todos, porque todos los seres humanos nacemos en esta tierra con la misma dignidad. Las
diferencias de color, religión, capacidades, lugar de nacimiento, lugar de residencia y tantas otras no pueden
anteponerse o utilizarse para justificar los privilegios de unos sobre los derechos de todos. Por consiguiente, como
comunidad estamos conminados a garantizar que cada persona viva con dignidad y tenga oportunidades adecuadas a
su desarrollo integral.�
�
119. En los primeros siglos de la fe cristiana, varios sabios desarrollaron un sentido universal en su reflexión sobre el
destino común de los bienes creados[91]. Esto llevaba a pensar que si alguien no tiene lo suficiente para vivir con
dignidad se debe a que otro se lo está quedando. Lo resume san Juan Crisóstomo al decir que «no compartir con los
pobres los propios bienes es robarles y quitarles la vida. No son nuestros los bienes que tenemos, sino suyos»[92]; o
también en palabras de san Gregorio Magno: «Cuando damos a los pobres las cosas indispensables no les damos
nuestras cosas, sino que les devolvemos lo que es suyo»[93].�
�
Una buena aplicación de la enseñanza del Papa es la pandemia. Estamos en una nueva fase de la pandemia ya que hay
vacunas disponibles. Me da una sensación de satisfacción saber que nuestro país está compartiendo las vacunas con el
mundo, especialmente en los países pobres. Me preocupa que no se utilicen vacunas designadas para los Estados Unidos.
Se podría decir que la razón más importante para vacunarse es el bien común. Cuantas más personas se vacunen, más
seguros estaremos de la salud de todos.�
�
Vivimos en una sociedad que nos enseña que cuanto más tengamos, más felices seremos. Las Escrituras nos enseñan
exactamente lo contrario. Somos más felices cuando compartimos. Quizás hoy, al reflexionar sobre las Escrituras,
podamos sentirnos inspirados para compartir lo que tenemos reconociendo que en la medida en que hacemos esto, nos
acercamos más al Señor.�
�
………… .una palabra sobre el personal de los sacerdotes en nuestra parroquia.�
�
Varias personas me han preguntado cuándo llegara un nuevo vicario. La respuesta es, no en el momento actual. La
escasez de sacerdotes está afectando a nuestra parroquia. Tengo una lista de sacerdotes jubilados que están disponibles
para ayudar en las parroquias. Cuando hice mis llamadas para pedir ayuda, me sorprendió que la mayoría de los
sacerdotes de la lista ya tuvieran compromisos. Continuaré haciendo llamadas, sabiendo que la mayoría de los pastores
están en la misma situación, muchas misas pero menos sacerdotes. Esto nos recuerda que nuestra vida como comunidad
parroquial depende cada vez más de la gente de la parroquia. Pasando el tiempo, me comprometo a buscar formas de
estructurar una mayor participación y pedir más compromiso. Esto ya no es un signo de la Iglesia del futuro, sino un
signo de la Iglesia presente.�
