Renew My Church Parish Representatives and Live Streaming of Masses:

I hope all are doing well while we shelter in our homes. My prayer continues to be with the St Ignatius community and the needs of all who are suffering. Please hold in prayer all those who are sick and their families. The Renew My Church process kicks off in mid-May with me and all pastors starting RMC participating in what has now become an online retreat. We will be trained in how the process works so that we can prepare our parish representatives for the Grouping Feedback and Discernment Team (GFDT) This team is comprised of five members from each of the three parishes in our group plus me and the other two pastors, Fr Rich Prendergast of St Gertrude and Fr Noel Reyes of St Jerome. I have invit-ed five parish members to the GFDT and they have gra-ciously agreed to serve. The members are the co-chairs of the Parish Pastoral Council, Dana McDermott and Henry Carmona, Liam Ford who is also a NCA parent, Leslie Soto who knows the religious education families and Jeanne Wrenn a member of the Finance Council. I am grateful that they agreed to serve. I think they will bring many perspectives to the discussions and be open to lis-tening to the various feedback the group will receive. The RMC Executive Team has also allowed for the GFDT to have a representative from the local Jesuit com-munity serve on the team. Fr Dan was invited to join the GFDT and he too willingly agreed to serve. Loyola Uni-versity will also be invited to name a person to serve on the GFDT. This past week I submitted a proposal to Dr Jo Ann Rooney, President of Loyola University and Fr Jim Prehn, SJ, Rector of the local Jesuit community seek-ing their approval to partner with St Ignatius on develop-ing the St Ignatius Mission in conjunction with RMC. The working group of Loyola faculty and staff who developed the proposal are very animated by the ide-as for the Mission and hopeful that Loyola will become a significant partner. Finally, as Governor Pritzker extended the shelter in place order Fr Dan and I along with the encouragement of parishioners decided we will begin streaming live Masses on the weekend of Sunday, May 17. We will stream an English Mass at 9:00 am and a Spanish Mass at 12:00 pm (Noon) on St Ignatius’ Facebook page. We also hope to then post the recording of the Mass on YouTube. We will stream these Masses each Sunday until the time when we can gather together in person. This time will come but in the meantime we will celebrate together online. Peace be with us….. Espero que todos estén bien mientras nos quedamos en casa. Mis oraciones continúan con la comunidad de San Ignacio y las necesidades de todos los que sufren. Por fa-vor, recen por los que están enfermos y sus familias. El proceso de renueva Mi Iglesia comienza a mediados de mayo con todos los párrocos comenzando RMC parti-cipando en lo que ahora se ha convertido un retiro online. Recibiremos entrenamiento en como funciona el proceso así podemos preparar nuestros representativos para el Equipo de Agrupación de Feedback y Discernimiento (GFDT) Este equipo esta compuesto de cinco miembros de cada una de las tres parroquias en nuestro grupo más los dos párrocos, Fr Rich Prendergast de St Gertrude y Fr Noel Reyes de St Jerome y yo. He invitado a cinco feli-greses al GFDT y ellos aceptaron a servir. Los miembros son los del Consejo Parroquial Pastoral, Dana McDermott y Henry Carmona, Liam Ford que también es un padre de NCA, Leslie Soto que conoce a las familias del programa de educación religiosa y Jeanne Wrenn, un miembro del Comité de Finanzas. Transmitire-mos Misas en inglés a 9:00 am y 12:00 pm es español en la pagina de Facebook de San Ignacio. Esperamos tam-bién poder ponerla en YouTube. Sunday Homily In these days of social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, many different voices are competing for our attention and acceptance. Epidemiologists and doctors talk about the need for more widespread testing to screen for the coronavirus or the antibodies that identify who has been infected already. Some politicians and business leaders talk about the need to restart local economies as soon as possible. Other politicians and medical professionals talk about the need to continue state lockdowns, lest virus infec-tions and deaths rebound during the summer and fall. With all of these competing voices, it can be difficult to know whom to trust or believe. Whose voices are most helpful during these uncertain times? In the today’s Gospel, St. John uses imagery from the realm of sheep farming to help us understand our relationship to the Risen Jesus. In that world, vulner-able sheep need to be kept safe from predators and thieves within gated, fenced enclosures, and guarded by attentive shepherds. The only way to safely let the sheep out for grazing or return them back at night is through a single gate. Left on their own, the sheep will wander in and out of the gate and get lost. They need a protective shepherd to lead them to safe pas-ture and back into the security of their pen. All that the sheep need to do is follow his voice. Throughout this parable, St. John compares the Risen Jesus to both the sheep-gate as well as the protective shepherd. But it is the shepherd’s voice that can “speak” most to us during these confusing times of COVID-19. Although they are somewhat dimwitted animals, sheep can be trained to identify the distinc-tive voice of their shepherd and to follow it whenev-er and wherever he uses it to call them. In fact, they can distinguish their shepherd’s voice from those of strangers who mean them harm. Similarly, St. John suggests that we Christians can learn the distinctive “voice” of Jesus so he can help us to find our way through these confusing times. Through our Ignatian tradition of Examen prayer, we can learn to recognize what he sounds like when he speaks to us in the depths of our hearts. We can learn to identify his voice in those personal thoughts, feel-ings, words or actions that leave us feeling peaceful, hopeful, and confident in the power of love. We can also learn to distinguish his voice from others that leave us feeling confused, divided, angry or hope-less.

Homilía del Domingo En estos días de distancia social durante la pandemia de COVID-19, muchas voces diferentes compiten por nuestra atención y aprobación. Epidemiologuitos y doctores hablan sobre la necesidad de un aumento de testeo por el coronavirus o los anticuerpos para identificar quienes ya han sido afectados. Algunos políticos y líderes empresarios hablan sobre la nece-sidad de reactivar la economía local lo más pronto posible. Otros políticos y médicos hablan de la nece-sidad de continuar con los estados cerrados, para que las infecciones y muertas del virus no reasumen du-rante el verano y el otoño. ¿Con todas esas voces compitiendo, puede ser difícil saber a quién confiar o creer? En el Evangelio de hoy, San Juan usa imagines del mundo de las ovejas para ayudarnos a entender nues-tra relación con Jesús Resucitado. En ese mundo, las ovejas vulnerables necesitan ser mantenidas seguras de los predadores y ladrones con cercas, puertas, y protegidas por pastores atentos. La única manera se-gura de dejar las ovejas salir para comer pasto o Vol-ver a traerlas a la noche es por medio una puerta úni-ca. Dejándolas solas, las ovejas saldrían y se perde-rían. Necesitan un pastor que las lleve a un lugar se-guro y las traiga de Vuelta. Lo único que las ovejas necesitan hacer es seguir voz. Por medio de esta parábola, San Juan compara a Je-sús Resucitado tanto como la puerta como el pastor protector. Pero es la voz del pastor que puede “hablar” más a nosotros durante esos tiempos de confusión del COVID-19. Aunque las ovejas no son los animales más inteligentes, puede ser entrenadas para seguir la voz distintiva de sus pastores y seguir-los cuando y a donde las llame. Pueden distinguir la voz del pastor de la de un extraño que las quiere las-timas. De manera similar, San Juan sugiere que los cristia-nos pueden seguir la “voz” particular de Jesús, para que nos ayude a encontrar nuestro lugar en esos mo-mentos confusos. Por medio de la tradición Ignacia-na del Examen, Podemos aprender a reconocer su voz cuando nos habla en la profundidad de nuestros corazones. Podemos aprender a identificar su voz en aquellos pensamientos personales, emociones, pala-bras o acciones que nos dejan serenos, con esperan-za, y confiados en el poder del amor. también pode-mos aprender a distinguir su voz de otros que nos dejan confundidos, divididos, enojados, o sin espe-ranza.

During this Easter season, we believe that Christ is indeed alive, even in the midst of sickness and death. May we be attentive to the sound of his voice in our hearts, in our lives, and in our parish community so that we can remain hopeful and loving, even during this time of pandemic. Fr. Igna an Services It seems that we are always waiting. But if we’re smart, while we wait we’re preparing.

Lent was a time of waiting. It was also a time of preparing for the Lord’s horrifying passion and glori-ous resurrection.

No sooner is Easter behind us then we find ourselves waiting again. Now we are waiting to complete our commemoration of the time that the resurrected Lord spent with us on earth before ascending to Heaven, a time of waiting that culminated with the arrival of the Holy Spirit — our Companion at all times, and in all things, from that first Pentecost until the end of days.

Is it a coincidence that our 40 days of Lent and our 50 days of waiting for Pentecost correspond this year to our period of waiting to revive after the COVID-19 pandemic?

As a parish the people of St. Ignatius Church are waiting for something else: The “Renew My Church” process, part of the inevitable cycle of renewal and rebirth that the local church must always and everywhere undergo as local realities — populations, needs, and resources — inevitably change.

Are we putting this time of waiting to good use?

A few months ago, before we had to “socially-distance” ourselves from each other, our parish under-took over many weeks an intense exercise in discernment, asking ourselves that, come what may, what role do we see for St. Ignatius Parish in the alignment of parishes and institutions may make up the future Catholic Church in Rogers Park and Edgewater.

Do you remember? Our answer very much saw Ignatian Services as a focal point of what that future could be. We recognized that at the heart of this parish has long been a vision of the St. Ignatius mission that sees serious Christian spirituality fused with a conscious commitment to the service of all of our brothers and sisters, especially for those whose basic needs may not be met.

We imagined a future in which St. Ignatius would form partnerships: With our sister parishes of St. Gertrude on one side of us and St. Jerome on the other; with the Jesuit community; and with Loyola Universi-ty, whose parish church we have been from the very beginnings of the University and the parish. How much stronger we can all be if our partners will join with us in adding numbers and dimensions to the St. Ignatius mission.

We wait for the conversations that will come once the pandemic is over and we can meet face to face. As we wait we prepare for our future mission in which the entire Church in Rogers Park and Edgewater seeks to do what Ignatian Services seeks to do now: To get the People of God , young and old, of all parts of our community, on their feet to walk together with the poor and needful, all of us on a journey to God.

If we can continue to show our potential partners, and ourselves, that this is the St. Ignatius mission, then it can define the future of the Catholic Church in our corner of Chicago for a long time to come.

READINGS OF THE WEEK

Parece que siempre estamos esperando. Si somos inteligentes, mientras esperamos, nos preparamos.

Cuaresma fue un tiempo de espera. También fue un tiempo para prepararnos para la horrible pasión del Señor y su gloriosa resurrección.

Poco después que paso la Pascua, nos encontramos otra vez esperando. Ahora estamos esperando ter-minar con el tiempo de conmemoración del tiempo que Jesús resucitado con nosotros en la tierra antes del as-cender a los Cielos, un tiempo de espera que terminó con la venida del Espíritu Santo — nuestro Compañero en todo momento, y en todas las cosas, desde el primer Pentecostés hasta el final del tiempo.

¿Es una coincidencia que nuestros 40 días de Cuaresma y nuestro 50 días de espera de Pentecostés co-rresponde este año a nuestro periodo de revivir luego de la pandemia de COVID-19?

Como parroquia la gente San Ignacio están esperando por algo más: El proceso “Renueva Mi Iglesia”, parte del inevitable del ciclo de renovación y renacimiento que la iglesia debe siempre y en todos lados pasar debido a los cambios inevitables — población, necesidades, y recursos — de la realidad local.

¿Estamos utilizando este tiempo de manera provechosa?

Hace unos meses, antes que tuviéramos que tener “distancia-social” entre nosotros, nuestra parroquia paso muchas semanas en un intenso ejercicio de discernimiento, preguntándonos que podría venir, que rol ve-mos para la Parroquia de San Ignacio en la estructuración de parroquias e instituciones sea el futuro de la Igle-sia Católica en Rogers Park y Edgewater.

¿Se acuerdan? Nuestra respuesta vio a Servicios Ignacianos como punto central de lo que el futuro pue-de ser. Reconocimos que en el corazón de esta parroquia ha tenido una visión de la misión de San Ignacio que ve una seria espiritualidad cristiana unido con un compromiso consciente de servicio a todos nuestros herma-nos y hermanas, especialmente con aquellos cuyas necesidades básicas no están cubiertas.

Imaginamos un futuro en cual San Ignacio estaría formando asociaciones: Con nuestras parroquias hermanas de St. Gertrude en un lado y St. Jerome en el otro; con la comunidad Jesuita; y con la Universidad de Loyola, de quienes hemos sido su iglesia parroquial desde el comienzo de la Universidad y la parroquia. Cuan-to más fuertes todos podemos ser si nuestros socios se unen con nosotros en sumar números y dimensiones a la misión de San Ignacio.

Esperamos por las conversaciones que tendremos una vez que la pandemia haya terminado y nos en-contremos cara a cara. Mientras esperamos nos preparamos para nuestra futura misión en cual la entera Iglesia de Rogers Park y Edgewater busca hacer lo que Servicios Ignacianos busca hacer ahora: ayudar al Pueblo de Dios, jóvenes y viejos, de todas partes de nuestra comunidad, ponerse de pie y caminar juntos con los pobres y los necesitados, todos nosotros en nuestra camino hacia Dios.

Si podemos mostrar a nuestros posibles compañeros, y a nosotros mismos, que esta es la misión de San Ignacio, puede entonces definir el futuro de la Iglesia Católica en nuestra esquina de Chicago por un largo tiempo.
