President’s Message

It was nine years ago that I started my

volunteer service for the PSNJ. How

time flies. In the beginning, I was co-

chair of Exhibitions and then went on to 2nd

Vice

President/Exhibitions. Then four years ago, I put my

name on the ballot for the President’s Office.

Over the past four years, I have written many

President’s messages. My goal was to share with you

thoughts and ideas that could help each of our members in some way. So, this message is not a

farewell, but let’s say, it’s looking into the future for

the PSNJ.

As I think back over the last four years, many of the

ideas that came to the Board’s Table were developed

and implemented. However, there is still much to be

accomplished. Realizing that we are a young and

growing Pastel Society, the PSNJ needs all of you to

continue the work that has been started for this

wonderful organization.

It has been a pleasure to work with each of the officers

on the Executive Board over these years and I would

like to thank each of you for your support, suggestions

and dedication to “GETTING THE JOB DONE”.

My closing words for this message to each of our

members….continue your journey, be involved with

the shows and programs offered, keep learning and

most of all PAINT, PAINT, PAINT !

Our next general meeting will be on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 1 PM. The meeting will be held at the Senior

House, 356 Main Street, Montville, NJ. The Senior House is located off exit 47 from 287, less than 0.5 mile going

east on Main Street (Route 202). It is next to the Public Safety Building (Police).

ELECTION

Here is the slate for the upcoming elections at our October meeting. We are still looking for a candidate for the

position of Corresponding Secretary. If interested, please contact Anita Gladstone at [email protected].

President: Michal Barkai, PSNJ

After serving two plus terms on the PSNJ board, first as Publicity Chair, then as Corresponding Secretary/Master

Pastelist Administrator, and back to Publicity, I decided it was time to accept the challenge and serve our pastel

community as PSNJ President. Prior experiences include exhibition and publicity coordination in several art

organizations, and IT Project and Quality Management. I love working with pastels and enjoy serving on the PSNJ

board, participating in the planning and decision making process. Being involved makes the experience more

rewarding and personal, and I encourage all our members to find ways they can contribute to our growing

community. Our young organization, founded in 2005, has grown and has since quadrupled in number of members.

It’s all of you - our members and volunteers - who make PSNJ the wonderful and vital organization that it is today.

I’m open to hearing your ideas and wants and look forward to our continued growth.

First Vice President/Membership: Carol Clemens, PSNJ

Having formerly served on the PSNJ Board as 2nd

Vice President/Exhibitions Chair, as well as Board participation

with other local art organizations, the importance of the office of Membership has become very clear. It is the

starting point around which all activities revolve. More than just record keeping, the Membership Chair works in

tandem with each of the other Board positions. It is responsible for the encouragement of new members and the

involvement of standing members. Organizational skills are key to this position. In this regard, and with devotion to

the PSNJ, I would like to offer my services.

Programs: Margaret Cohen, PSNJ: Who can turn down a request from a good friend? When Anita asked if I would be PSNJ Program Chair for the next

two years, I realized that I am qualified for this job. For six years I was chair of the Adult Education Committee at

my synagogue. I envisioned programs, engaged speakers, and negotiated their fees (working within a budget). I am

looking forward to doing something similar for PSNJ—but not alone. You are all my talent scouts. If you know of

an artist to demo at our meetings, please let me know. If you have ideas for a hands-on workshop for members,

please let me know. And if you want to provide a demo or workshop yourself, please, please let me know. Our

group contains an amazing amount of talent. Let’s share and maximize it!

Newsletter: Alan Gorelick I believe that in order to gain something out of membership in a club or organization, I need to give something of

myself in return. It is for this reason that I have accepted the nomination for the editor’s position of the

PSNJ NEWSLETTER plus membership on the PSNJ BOARD. As a retired creative director, graphic designer and

design firm owner for over 50 years, I have had abundant experience in these capacities with numerous clients as

well as professional and social organizations. I look forward to the upcoming year and the opportunity to share my

creative abilities.

Meet the New Publicity Coordinator Vinnie Dachowski was appointed in August to fill the vacant position for Publicity Coordinator by Louise

Woodcox, President. Vinnie stated that “to be perfectly honest, the Publicity Coordinator position is ‘new’ for me,

but I will do my best to assure that everything that needs to be said about The Pastel Society of New Jersey is

published in a timely manner. My experience as an artist goes back to high school. I went to a high school where

you either majored in art or music, and of course, I majored in art. Upon graduation, my art studies did not resume

until after I was married and had two children. I took art classes and workshops, and changed mediums several

times. Finally pastels won my heart. I took a workshop in France a couple of years ago, and I have been studying

pastels with Christina Debarry at Studio 10. I believe that my skills acquired at my job as a site coordinator, such as

organization, dealing with people daily, and attention to details, will be put to good use as the Publicity Chairman

for PSNJ.

Our demonstrator will be Alain Picard, PSA, CPS, president of the Connecticut Pastel Society.

He will be doing either a landscape or still life demo.

Alain Picard, PSA, CPS, earned a BA in Illustration from Western CT State University and went on to study at the

Art Student's League in New York City. Picard cites Sargent, Degas, and Sorolla among his artistic influences. A

love of light and beauty are immediately apparent in his pastel and oil paintings. Alain's work has been featured in

such publications as The Artist's Magazine and The Pastel Journal.

He’s garnered top awards throughout the Northeast in esteemed exhibitions including the Portrait Society of

America, the Hudson Valley Art Association, the Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists, the Connecticut Pastel

Society and the Pastel Society of America. Alain is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America as well as

the Connecticut Pastel Society where he currently serves as President. In 2004, The Artist's Magazine highlighted

Alain as one of 20 contemporary artists "On the Rise". He later won the Best Portfolio Award at the 2009 Portrait

Society of America Conference in Washington, DC. A frequent workshop instructor and demonstrator for art

associations, schools, galleries and museums, he recently demonstrated at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the

National Arts Club in New York City. In an effort to share his passion for art with others, Alain’s first book, “Pastel

Basics,” was published in 2013, followed by a series of instructional DVD’s in portraiture later that year. He lives

with his wife and two sons in Southbury, Connecticut.

This year the Signature Members and Board Members Exhibit was held in June at the Mayo Performing Arts Center,

100 South Street, Morristown, NJ. The reception was well attended and viewers admired the NJ themed paintings

to commemorate our states 350th

anniversary. Many thanks to Phyllis Kaufman for her delicious treats!

Our PSNJ members, who are also teachers,

have been using our Facebook Page to

advertise upcoming classes. You can also use

it to tell members what shows you are in or

any that you think our membership would be

interested in. So get in the “habit” of

checking our PSNJ Facebook page! In

addition, teachers can have a note on the

PSNJ website page under Links that states

they are instructors and that will direct

anyone looking for a class to the teacher’s

website.

What can I say except it was an amazing experience to see yet another famous artist explain their philosophy and

provide numerous tips while watching them paint? Richard McKinley explained how he treats painting by going

through a process that involves three stages. At the same time, he reiterated that a painter’s best work comes out of

being intuitive and that one is “always starting over.” The first stage he calls “Sensitivity” – a why and what,

visually active meditative period. It involves building the foundation of your painting through use of thumbnails to

visualize shapes, edges, value, and color harmony. The second stage he calls “Serendipity” – the playful, fun stage.

He stated that we should “not limit creativity by rules.” He proceeded to use watercolor as an underpainting. The

final stage he calls “Solution” – where we remind ourselves of the why and what and the former two stages “dance”

with each other. Many thanks to Judy Leeds for organizing this event.
