This is my last blurb as club president. We’ve had a lot of fun and a few disappointments over the last two years. Lots of activities where a number of us have had great times enjoying our cars, each other’s company and travel and activities for car lovers. We had a great car show in ‘13 and a bit of a disaster due to weather this year. It’s still uncertain whether there will be staff and interest sufficient to make it happen in 2015, that will be up to the membership. I feel like I’m leaving the club in good hands. We finally got a volunteer to serve as Secretary for next year. Sandi Gunderson has agreed to serve as well as doing a downsized newsletter. I’m sure our incoming officers will do their part, and I hope that the membership at large will support them and help them keep the club going as a fun organization. I look forward as the past-president board member to helping when and where I can. I want to especially express my thanks to the many of you who have stepped up to help with activities, and also to those who simply come out and participate—activities and events are lots more fun with people around! I hope to see many of you at the Christmas party as well as next year. So long for now– Steve F. A Night Before Christmas 'Twas the night before Christmas And out in the garage. There wasn't a trace of a Ford an Audi or Dodge. The presents were wrapped and the lights were all lit, So I figured I'd go mess with my Corvette for a bit. I popped the release and I lifted the hood, When a deep voice behind me said "Looks pretty good." Well as you can imagine, I turned mighty quick, And there by my workbench, stood good Ol' Saint Nick! I just stared at first, not sure what to say, Then Santa piped in "Don't suppose you'd trade that for my sleigh?' "Forget it, Mr. Claus" then I started to grin - "If you've got time we could go for a spin!" His round little mouth, all tied up like a bow, Burst into a smile when he said "C'mon then, Let's GO!!" So as not to disturb all my neighbors' retreat, We pushed my old Vette quietly onto the street. Then, taking our places to drift down the hill, I turned on the key, then let the clutch spill. The sound erupted and took Santa by surprise, But he liked it a lot, by the look in his eyes. With cold tires spinning and the headlights aglow, We headed on out to where hot rodders go. And Santa's grin widened, approaching his ears, With every shift up as I went through the gears. Then he yelled "Can't recall when I've felt so alive!" So I backed off the gas and said "Do you wanna drive?" Ol' Santa was stunned when I gave him the keys, As he walked past the headlights he shook at the knees! Then the small block exploded with a snarling sound! Santa let out the clutch as the tires tore up the ground. Power shift into second, again into third! I grabbed for the handle, at loss for a word. With the tank reaching empty, Santa returned to his sleigh, That ride in my old Vette really made his day! Later, I heard him exclaim, as he flew from sight, "Merry Christmas, my new friend, it's been a heck of a night!!!"

Tech Hints & Tips

What do You want for Christmas Mr. Car Guy?

When you were a kid, that was your favorite phrase this time of year.  But for a  middle‐aged (we are going to live to be 120, right?) car guy, picking a gift can be tough. My wife swears I have everything auto‐related, often two or three of each, and she’s mostly right. In trying to come up with a top ten list, my eyes were opened to other possibilities, so I’ll try to just come up with some categories you can share with your loved ones, and spare them the anguish of trying to find that “impossible‐to buy‐ for” gift.

KEEP IT CLEAN‐ The car, that is. There are many products out there to help in that process‐ water blades, dusters, chemicals, washing systems (I love my Mr. Clean Auto Dry), you name it, it exists. And we use that stuff up, so  resupplying is fair game.

PERSONALIZE‐ We’re all proud of our cars. A mug or a T‐shirt with a picture of the car is cool, and with a digital camera, a printer, and transfer paper, this can be a do‐it‐yourself project for the giver with more talent than  money. You can get customized floormats, car covers, etc. A model of your favorite car is always cool (who makes a 35 Packard model? Darn!).

ELECTRONICS‐ Lots of cool gizmos out there these days. A Bluetooth unit, a GPS, a satellite radio, or an I‐pod or USB‐capable stereo could be serious possibilities. It’s nice to have tunes to listen to on a long road trip. You are planning some of those, right?  Gotta drive ‘em!

CLOTHING‐ Jackets, shirts and hats can be logo’ed  for your favorite brand , model or group (the club). Also, gloves for winter driving and sunglasses. BTW‐ saw an interesting E‐mail that suggested using sunglasses (polarized) in a driving rainstorm‐ it makes it possible to see through the falling rain and road spray.

SAFETY ITEMS‐ Several neat things out there. LED road flares; a personal power supply that has a flashlight, can jump start and can run AC stuff; a neat little safety tool that can break glass, cut seat belts, check tire pressure and glows in the dark‐‐‐ lots of cool stuff. Try sharperimage.com for some cool things.

BOOKS AND LITERATURE‐ A book about your favorite marque can be cool. One of the coolest I’ve found (out of print‐ got mine on Amazon) is Encyclopedia of American Cars. Tons of interesting facts and info on even the oddball

makes I love. A magazine subscription can be a neat gift, also.

FINE ART‐ Every year we get a calendar for the office from Dale Klee (oldcarart.com), and he has many fine prints available for old car people like us. Another website http://fineartamerica.com/art/paintings/auto/

AUTO CLUB MEMBERSHIP‐ As in AAA or Allstate, it’s nice to have coverage.

TOOL STORAGE‐ A new toolbox, a garage cabinet system, you can get anything from an organizer pouch for road trip emergency tools to a new garage with a lift and a wide‐screen TV (and a fridge for the beer‐lovers) Something for every budget.

A DAY AT THE TRACK‐ A driving school like Bondurant or a day at a track is an awesome gift, if you can afford it. For most, a bucket‐list item.

GIFT CERTIFICATES‐ If you can’t figure anything else out, a gift certificate to the favorite auto or tool store is always useful.

Merry Christmas and remember the reason for the season.

P A G E 7 Q: What automaker's first logo incorporated the Star of David? Also how many times has this company been sold or merged? After the founding of the Dodge Brothers Company by Horace and John Dodge in 1900, the Detroit-based company quickly found work producing

precision engine and chassis components for the city’s burgeoning number of automobile firms. Chief among these customers were the established Olds Motor Vehicle Company and the then new Ford Motor Company. The Star: The original Dodge was a circle, with two interlocking triangles forming a six-pointed star in the middle; an interlocked "DB" was at the center of the star, and the words "Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicles" encircled the outside edge. Although similar to the Star of David, the Dodge brothers were not Jewish. Although the "Brothers" was dropped from the name for trucks in 1929 and cars in 1930, the DB star remained on the cars until the 1939 models were introduced. In 1914, they entered the car business with the new four-cylinder Dodge Model 30. Marketed as a slightly more upscale competitor to the ubiquitous Ford Model T, it pioneered or made standard many features later taken for granted: all-steel body construction (the vast majority of cars worldwide still used wood-framing under steel panels, though Stoneleigh and BSA used steel bodies as early as 1911); 12-volt electrical system (6-volt systems would remain the norm until the 1950s); 35 horsepower (versus the Model T's 20), and sliding-gear transmission (the best-selling Model T would retain an antiquated planetary design until its demise in 1927). As a result of this, and the brothers' well-earned reputation for the highest quality truck, transmission and motor parts they made for other successful vehicles, Dodge Brothers cars were ranked at second place for U.S. sales as early as 1916. That same year, Henry Ford decided to stop paying stock dividends to finance the construction of his new River Rouge complex. This led the Dodges to file suit to protect their annual stock earnings of approximately one million dollars, in turn, leading Ford to buy out his shareholders; the Dodges were paid $25 million. Also in 1916, Dodge Brothers vehicles won acclaim for durability while in service with the U.S. Army's Pancho Villa Expedition into Mexico. Dodge Brothers cars continued to rank second place in American sales in 1920. However, the same year, tragedy struck as John Dodge was felled by pneumonia in January. His brother Horace then died of cirrhosis in December of the same year (reportedly out of grief at the loss of his brother, with whom he was very close). With the loss of both founders, the Dodge Brothers Company passed into the hands of the brothers' widows, who promoted long-time employee Frederick Haynes to the company presidency. Throughout the 1920s Dodge gradually lost its ranking as the third best-selling automobile manufacturer, slipping down to 7th in the U.S. market. Dodge Brothers emerged as a leading builder of light trucks. They also entered into an agreement whereby they marketed trucks built by Graham Brothers of Evansville, Indiana. The three Graham brothers would later produce Graham automobiles. Stagnation in development was becoming apparent, however, and the public responded by dropping Dodge Brothers to fifth place in the industry by 1925. That year, the Dodge Brothers company was sold by the widows to the well-known investment group Dillon, Read & Co. for no less than $146 million (at the time, the largest cash transac-tion in history). Dillon, Read & Co. offered non-voting stock on the market in the new Dodge Brothers, Inc., firm, and along with the sale of bonds was able to raise $160 million, reaping a $14 million (net) profit. All voting stock was retained by Dillon, Read. Frederick Haynes remained as company head until E.G. Wilmer was named board chairman in November, 1926. Wilmer was a banker with no auto experience and Haynes remained as president. Changes to the car, save for superficial things like trim levels and colors, remained minimal until 1927, when the new Senior six-cylinder line was introduced. On October 1, 1925, Dodge Brothers, Inc., acquired a 51% interest in Graham Brothers, Inc., for $13 million and the remaining 49% on May 1, 1926. The three Graham brothers, Robert, Joseph and Ray, assumed management positions in Dodge Brothers before departing early in 1927. Eventually Dodge was sold to Chrysler Corporation in 1928. There is so much more to tell about the Dodge Brothers Company, but to break it down on how many times the company was sold here is the short version as best we can decipher. Dodge Brothers Company to Dillon, Read & Co. to Chrysler Corp. which merged in 1998 with Daimler-Benz AG to form Daimler Chrysler– (Steve attended Chrysler training at this time and the instructors jokingly referred to it as DamnNear Chrysler). In 2007 the Chrysler group was sold to Cerberus Capital Management which after a bankruptcy was morphed into Chrysler Group LLC, with Fiat, UAW and the US government forming a partnership. The bail out was paid off early and Chrysler Group LLC merged fully with Fiat to form FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) in 2014, based in London England. Does this mean that it is now a British Car? There was a bumper sticker seen on a British car that reads “Parts seen falling off this car are of finest British manufacturing quality”. Or is it “Fix It Again Tony”?LOL So without taking off your shoes to count—the company was sold or merged 6 times (so far)! Go Mopar! We won’t go into how many Auto Companies that the “Chrysler Corp” has acquired over the years! You will run out of fingers and toes so you may need to LOOK IT UP!
