ModErN driviNg dyNAMiCS iN TodAy’S WorLdLength: 2 Hours Recommended: Technician Skill Level: Intermediate / AdvancedNew car development continuously adds additional safety and comfort benefits, to help prevent accidents for the driver. Technology from the past could have led to loss of control in vehicles. To aid in vehicle control, the OE industry is demanding a low friction ball joint in control arms to ensure the function of straight line stability – and is the leading requirement from today’s OE manufacturers.

From this class you will learn: Essentials and principles of chassis systems - Take a look into the foundations of chassis dynamics and what angles mean to different settings in the vehicle. Multi-link suspension systems - understand why the count of control arms is increasing in today’s vehicles and what the connection is to the multi-link suspension systems, which provides better connection between the tire and the ground. Electro-mechanical steering systems - the introduction of electro-mechanical steering racks from OE manufacturers helps to provide a stronger straight line stability, which is now electronically controlled. Driver assistance functions - today’s vehicles are beginning to see, think and act - identify how assistance systems have an influence on the steering and brake system and learn how to do a basic setting on radar systems.

OEM flowcharts routinely make EVAP system diagnostics too complicated. Despite the wide variety of systems out there, our research has revealed that a layered approach is much faster than the linear OEM approach, leading to a profitable diagnosis without the wasted (and unbillable) diagnostic time or multiple trips for your customer. This is the 2nd subject in our Import Series, but also comes with a thick Domestic section. First, we show you universal techniques applicable to every system. If no leaks are found, the procedures become more system-specific, but not yet manufacturer-specific. All systems fall into one of four categories and by following our universal procedures, you can still avoid the technical nonsense that typically lengthens diagnostic times! Most faults are found using these first two layers. We have also included manufacturer and system specific tips and tricks for those cases where you’ll need to go that deep.

The Instructor: Kris LewisOver 40 years in the auto industry, 38 years turning wrenches as a technician and as shop manager. Last 18 years, he devotes his time to computer diagnostics, drivability, and training. Has a handle on the pulse of real-world technician’s daily issues, by working on a technical support hotline (2004 – 2007), handled 15 to 20 “Diagnosis to Completion” calls per day. His unique way of putting things in layman’s terms has also helped him connect with the automotive consumer market through a nationally syndicated call-in radio show. Engine performance problems typically set DTCs and technicians can fall into the trap of replacing parts based only on the code stored. What if replacing parts based on DTCs alone doesn’t solve the customer concern? What if multiple codes are stored? What if a drivability concern exists and there are no DTCs? The most successful technicians in the industry approach problems in a structured and logical way. This class will give you a chance to follow their thought process and develop your own abilities.

This class will discuss the various advantages of using the Federated Car Care membership tools to increase profits and effectively attract and retain customers. Class will cover all the features of the program in-depth, including the Nationwide Repair Warranty, Roadside Assistance, Road Hazard program, training programs, image enhancement, business building tools and more. The class will also provide an in-depth look at the Federated Link Catalog system and its functions, features and benefits that provide better electronic cataloging over other services. Streamline your part ordering process with a host of professional tools to save you valuable time and money. Both current members and interested, potential members are encouraged to attend this class.

The Instructor: Mark Smith & John Marcum

Mark Smith is the former owner and president of Wholesale Auto Parts in Summersville, W. Va. He now works at the national headquarters of Federated Auto Parts Distributors in Staunton, Va. A recipient of the “National Business Leadership Award,” Honorary Chairman by the Republican National Committee, Smith has served on the West Virginia Automotive Wholesalers Association Board of Directors, Nicholas County Board of Education Advisory member, and on his local Rotary Club as Charter President. He also is a former National Advisory Council member for Auto Value/BTB, a former consultant for Epicor Solutions and consultant for GLG Council

John Marcum has been with Fisher/Federated for over 20 years, with most of that experience coming as Federated Auto Parts Marketing Services Manager and Director of the Federated Car Care program. John spent 6 years in the United States Navy.

rAiSiNg yoUr BAr To EArN MorE MAiNTENANCE SALESLength: 2 Hours Recommended: Owners / Management / Decision MakersBack by popular demand, this 2018 class continues where last year’s successful professional development class left off. As vehicle technology continues to improve many repair opportunities are disappearing. Consumers on the other hand, want to spend less and get more value at the same time. On top of that, your customers could be spending more time researching vehicle service options online than listening to you. So are you ready for some new approaches? Are you willing to change your behaviors? Raise the bar?

This class is going to show you what could be causing many of your sales woes and how to raise the bar on your professionalism that in turn, increases service purchases. The newest techniques, tips and tricks that can have your customers asking you what should be done instead of telling you what they want.

Attend this seminar if you are tired of selling mainly based on price, your customers are only interested in oil changes and needed repairs, you have stopped trying to sell services that customers don’t seem to want, you have difficulty selling premium level parts and services, or if you recognize failed parts is declining and maintenance sales aren’t growing. Let’s change that, let’s raise the bar.

The Instructor: Mac McGovern“Mac” McGovern is the Director of Marketing & Training for KYB Americas Corp. His career spans both automotive service and the parts industry. He owned an independent service center himself for 30 years. During that time he became an Accredited Automotive Manager, an AMI-accredited seminar instructor, a Service Center Mentor and National Advisory Board Member for major parts distribution group, a distribution and vendor consultant and speaker, was president of a Certified Service Center Council and volunteered for organizations like IL-ASA, IL-EPA, the Motorist Assurance Program, the AWDA Manufacturer Advisory Council and currently serves on the ACA Education Committee.
