Ceasefire, first introduced to Hanover Park last year, will now be implemented in Manenberg fol- lowing an increase in gang vio- lence in the area. The project is set to be imple- mented in three stages, namely the baseline survey and training of of- ficials, followed by full implemen- tation with the first stage set to kick off on 1 July. JP Smith, Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security, says they are eager to take the step to safer streets in Manenberg. “We want to provide Manenberg with the foundation for a package of interventions which will be de- scribed in a community action plan,” Smith says. Ceasefire custodian for the Hanover Park initiative, Pastor Craven Engel, says they are ready to make a difference in Manenberg. “We had meetings on Monday and Tuesday to make sure the project takes off,” Engel says. “It is all set and we hope to have full implementation within three months.” A custodian is yet to be appoint- ed. With an allocated budget of R3.5m the roll-out will see the training of rent-a-cops and out- reach initiatives to allow for full implementation. Manenberg police spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Bennett says they welcome the initiative with open arms. “Ceasefire will definitely assist us in reducing violence and crime prevention as they intervene on different levels,” Bennett says. “They have already had great success in other areas and we look forward to having their assistance in Manenberg.” Smith confirms there has been a significant reduction in crime since January 2013 with a total of 135 high-risk individuals and 280 youth being assisted through a va- riety of outreach programmes which has seen a significant reduc- tion in murder and attempted mur- der in Hanover Park. Since its introduction Ceasefire has set out to tackle five key issues and will continue to do so with the roll-out to Manenberg. “The City aims to achieve this crime reduction through violence interruption, outreach work, com- munity mobilisation, public edu- cation and monitoring and evalua- tion,” Smith mentions. Bennett cautions that the task ahead will not be easy. “Stepping in to a new area is al- ways a challenge. Intervening on turf and drug coordination is the easy part. When you have young- sters shooting on instinct it is diffi- cult to go in and change their mind- sets,” he says. The initiative follows the intro- duction of another body set to com- bat gang violence and crime in the area. With growing interest in the gang problems in Manenberg, Smith says, it is still up to the com- munity to get involved. “The residents are still the big- gest role players in the initiative. We provide assistance but it will be up to them to make a difference,” he says. ROMPIE ROAD PARK: RESIDENTS FUME OVER ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

Drug dealers bewareCHEVON BOOYSEN

@ChevonBooysen

What should be a place of play and de-light for young children, is causingproblems for residents around

Rompie Road Park on the corners of AlbertRoad and Church Street in Lansdowne.Residents in the area say they are fed-up

with the activities happening at the parkwhich includes drug dealing and drinking.A resident, who spoke on condition of an-

onymity, says the park is proving to be aproblem and something needs to be done.“We are sittingwith a real problemat this

park. Youngsters come here to smoke anddrink at night andmake anuisance of them-selves,” he says.He insists that police presence needs to

be tighter and stricter at the park.“They say if you see a police van patrol

over here then you should make a wish be-cause it’s a rare sight. And these youngsterstake advantage of that,” he says.According to another resident, who lives

adjacent to the park, the groups of young-sters visiting the park has her fearing forher safety.“You can hear them swearing and mak-

ing a noise here at night and one can’t doanything because they terrorise you. I justkeep quiet because I’m scared they mightsmash my windows,” she says. Both residents echo that although theFla-

mingoCrescent informal settlementmaybeon the receiving end of the blame, they in-sist that children from the area are alsoguilty of causing havoc at the park.

“It’s unfair to just point fingers across theroad when children from our very neigh-bourhood are also making themselvesguilty. Parents should stop covering up.”Lansdowne Civic Association spokesper-

sonEbrahimHull says hehas received com-plaints fromAlbert Road andChurch Streetresidents and these complaints are receiv-ing the necessary attention.“I drove past the particular park and this

was at past 21:00 and there were a bunch ofyoungsters loitering there. This was quitedisturbing to me,” Hull says. The issue was immediately reported to

police.Lansdownepolice spokespersonSergeant

NkululekoMnyaka says they have receivedcomplaints andhave since taken steps to tryand alleviate the problem.

LANSDOWNE: LIQUOR APPLICATIONS DENIED BY SUBCOUNCIL

No extended trading hoursSAMANTHA LEE

@Samantha_Lee121

Regulars will have to stock up before18:00 after councillors voted to keepthree liquor stores closed after current

trading hours.Applications for extended trading hours

from stores in Lansdowne, Crawford andAthlone Industria were put before Subcoun-cil 17 for consideration at their recent meet-ing.

In his opening address, chairpersonGeorge March mentioned that he recogniseda trend but advised the councillors to keep

an open mind.“I want to ask councillors to apply their

minds fairly and sensitively when consider-ing these applications,” he said.

Two Aroma Drop Inns and Liquor World, have made applications to extend weekdaytrading from 18:00 to 20:00 and off-consump-tion trading on Sundays from 11:00 to 18:00.

In their applications all three stores pro-vided motivations for their decision.

“With 90% of the client base finishingwork at at 17:30, the extended hours wouldallow us to cater for them at reduced pric-ing,” wrote Liquor World owner GerhardClements.

A lawyer for Aroma Drop Inn Chris Bar-ratt believes the prevention of sales on Sun-days are affecting crime and strengtheningillegal trade in the area.

Councillor Llewellyn Jordaan, who repre-sents ward 60 in the absence of councillorAnthea Green, disagreed and says the appli-cants have not provided sufficient reasonsfor wanting to extend hours.

“Think about all the religious organisa-tions in the area. The stores want to satisfyconsumers but their consumers representonly a small part of the community. I movethat we reject both applications,” Jordaansaid.

In a similar fashion, councillor JunaidHoosain moved that the third application byLiquor World be rejected as well.

After a short deliberation the decision wastaken to a vote and applications for all threestores were unanimously rejected.

But March says the ruling is not set instone. “Although we have rejected the appli-cations, the stores still have an opportunityto appeal our decision,” he says.

Barratt says for them the way forward isunclear. “We have not yet decided what ourplan of action will be. When we receive allthe objections we will deliberate and decideif we will appeal the decision or not,” hesays.

But for Clements, there is no other option.“We are running at a loss and customers

are not happy that we are closing early,” hetold People’s Post.

“If we continue like this for another sixmonths we will have to close our doors.”

HANOVER PARK: SPLASHES OF PAINT TO ENLIVEN A COMMUNITY

Finding the brighter side of lifeSAMANTHA LEE

@Samantha_Lee121

It’s amazing what a difference a splash ofpaint makes. One of Hanover Park’scourts got a face-lift as the community all

pitched in to give their court a fresher, clean-er look.OnSaturday theCity ofCapeTown, in con-

junction with Metro Police, hosted a clean-up of Tiberias Court on Lansburg Road.Residents, Metro Police and Youth Police

ambassadors joined in to cut grass, sweepthe corridors and paint over illegal graffiticluttering the court.Bradley Thenissen, team leader of the ini-

tiative, says they are fighting crime from a

different angle.“We want to implement the broken win-

dow theory. If the widow is broken it createsopportunity, but if it is fixed the criminalswill move on,” he says.“The same applies to the wall. If the wall

is painted no one will come and write on it.”The project was designed to get the com-

munity to take ownership of their court. With the presence of Metro Police officials,it also provided residents with a day of care-free lounging and playing following a spateof shootings in the court.Superintendent Mark Dearden says culti-

vating the youth is important before it is toolate.“We need to get through to the youth be-

fore they are influenced. This court is fullof children and older people so there isn’tmuch gangsterism in the court. We want toclean up here to change the mindset of thechildren and residents of this court,”Dearden told People’s Post. This is part of what spurred the introduc-

tionof theYouthPoliceAmbassadorProject. The programme, first introduced to CrystalHigh School in 2013, teaches pupils to takeownership of their communities and stay offthe streets.Damian Williams, team leader of the am-

bassadors atCrystalHigh, says they arehap-py to be involved in the project. The team, which has won various acco-

lades for the work they are doing to preventcrime, has been working closely with theirpeers and the Metro Police to eliminatecrime in the area.Williams went on to say pupils look up to

them and are looking forward to joining theprogramme later this month.“This is good and exciting. When we

pulled up here this morning we thought wewere going to do it alone. The community isgetting involved and this is what we want-ed,” he says. But some are less optimistic.A court resident, who spoke on condition

of anonymity, says the initiative is good, but

enough isn’t being done to ensure the safetyof the children in the court.“When the gangs fight, they run and shoot

at each other through the courts. The chil-dren are not safe here.We needMetro Policeto patrol heremore often,” the resident says.“We need more activities and security for

the children because their childhoods arebeing stolen from them.”But other residents were in consensus

that the initiative was something positivefor the community. With their children astheir main concern, they want the City totake an interest in their court and providefencing and parks to keep the children occu-pied.They also asked for the City’s assistance

in starting a neighbourhood watch to keepgangsterism at bay.“Small children are impressionable. They

see the gangsters fighting andwe don’t wantthem to turn out that way. They need to getjobs andmore activities for the youth,” saysanother resident. With the many concerns in the area,

Dearden says the Metro Police are deter-mined to make a difference in the communi-ty. “We want to help the community. Thisis only the start of many projects that wewant to implement in this community andothers just like it,” he says.

VIRTUAL FRAUD: HOLIDAY HOME ‘DID NOT EXIST’

Scammed outof holidayCHEVON BOOYSEN

@ChevonBooysen

Online scamming is be-coming a virtual night-mare as one holiday-

maker found out.Desperate for some time

out and in search of afforda-ble holiday accommodation,Zariah de Wet started look-ing for places online.“I responded to an adver-

tisement on [a website] andbooked a holiday home overthe Easter weekend. I spoketo a guy who identified him-self,” she says.“I deposited an amount of

R3 560 into a Nedbank ac-count and arrangements were made to ar-rive on Thursday 18 April. When we ar-rived at our destination we realised the ad-dress was not holiday accommodation and,in fact, did not exist,” says an angryDeWet.The holiday home was advertised show-

ing photos of the property.Police spokesperson Constable Zandile

Marashula confirms that a case of fraudwas reported at the Mitchell’s Plain PoliceStation and the case is still under investiga-tion. No suspects have been arrested.“We can confirm that a case of fraud was

reported on Friday 4 April. The complain-ant alleges she booked a holiday getawayand made payments for the reservation. The complainant later discovered that theplace does not exist,” Marashula says.De Wet has since tried to contact the per-

son she liaised with to make the reserva-tion. “They are still operating with thenumber I contacted them on, but they keepusing different names,” De Wet says.“It’s so frustrating that they can get away

with my hard-earned cash.”Sergeant Jerome Voegt from Mitchell’s

Plain police says consumers should be verywise when making purchases online. “Donot deposit money into an account withoutreferencing and checking that the productyou’re purchasing is legitimate,” he says.Police urge the community to be more

alert of fraudulent internet purchases.“We encourage the community to report

such cyber crimes,” Marashula says.V Have you been scammed through an online pur-chase? Starting with the word “Post”, SMS your viewsto 32516. SMSes cost R1.

It enables the S 63 AMGCoupe to lean through bends – justlike a motorcycle.Merc explained: “The lateral ac-

celeration acting on occupants isreduced in a way akin to whendriving on a banked curve. Thepassengers sitmore firmly. The ob-ject is not to reach higher corner-ing speeds but to produce an evenmore pleasant motoring experi-ence.”The curve-tilt function can be se-

lected as one of three drive modesand activates from 30-180km/h.The S63AMGCoupé can be fitted

with multi-spoke forged grey alloyrims (8.5x19 front and 9.5x19 rear)

When booking a car in for a serviceor for repairs, few of you are pre-pared for the shock when you real-

ise the cost of the replacement parts.Depending on what dealership or garage

you take your car to, these costs can varybecause different types of parts are used.Les McMaster, chairpeson of the Motor

Industry Workshop Association (Miwa),says it is important to know exactly whatparts are being fitted to your vehicle foryour own safety, the good running of yourvehicle and for insurance purposes. He says there are three types of parts typi-

cally available to South Africans. OriginalEquipment Manufacturer (OEM), genericparts (non-OEM) and parts manufacturedwith no quality control measures in place(pirate parts).OEMs are usually available from your

car dealership’s service department andthey’re used as a direct replacement to theoriginal part that was fitted on your car onthe assembly line.Although these parts aremore expensive,

theyusually comewithawarranty and theyare stringently tested for quality.Non-OEMs or aftermarket parts are non-

branded and inmany case they are as good,or even better, than the OEM counterpart. Some vehicle brands have even started to

develop their own non-OEM lines as an ad-ditional income generator.“Many warranties require consumers to

use OEM parts and they would be voided ifapproved parts are not used,” says McMas-ter.“But this is not always the case, so check

with your insurance service provider if youwant to use non-OEM parts,” he continues.Additionally, some non-OEMpartsmight

not be a good physical fit for a specific vehi-cle, and using them could cause damage toyour vehicle if fitted incorrectly. However, McMaster points out that in

most instances, the non-OEM parts offergood, affordable quality, making them fa-vourable options for older models.“In fact, if it can be proven that the gener-

ic part is of the same quality as the OEMpart, many insurance companies them-selves ask repair shops to use these genericparts to lower costs,” he says.Pirate parts are the ‘cheap and nasty’ of-

fering and with these products there is noway of knowing what kind of quality youare getting. Some of these products are just as good

as the OEM parts, but others are extremelydangerous. They are cheaper because they cut cor-

ners and use poor quality materials and be-sides the potential damage to your vehicle, using these parts creates a very real physi-cal risk.If you receive a lower than expected

quote, don’t simply take it at facevalue, cau-tions McMaster. “Pirate parts are usuallyan inferior-quality forgery and they arenever a bargain, because the losses youwillincur are invariably higher than the sav-ings you thinkyouwillmake,” saysMcMas-ter.Not knowing which parts are being fitted

to your vehicle could have expensive anddangerous consequences.

Honda, Mazda, Toyota and Nissan are re-callingmillions of vehicles globally for de-fective airbags manufactured by supplierTakata that could possibly explode. No crashes have been reported related

to Monday 23 June recalls.Takata is a major manufacturer of air-

bags, seat belts, steering wheels and otherauto parts.InApril andMay last year,Takata’s cus-

tomers – led by Honda and Toyota – re-calledmore than fourmillion vehicles dueto the risk that defective air-bag inflators

could blow apart. Takata and Honda toldUS safety regulators the core of the prob-lem was how the explosive material usedto inflate Takata air-bags had been han-dled and processed from 2000 through2002.Honda South Africa cannot yet confirm

whether local models will be affected.Last year’s recalls involving Honda and

four other automakers were intended toclose the book on a problem that emergedin 2007 and had already been linked to twodeaths.Takata reported that the earlier recall

had not included all of the problem air-bags..

SARS: ‘NEVER PROMPTS ANYONE FOR BANKING DETAILS’

Tax emailscam alertDESIREÉ RORKE

@dezzierorke

With the tax return filing date loom-ing closer, countless taxpayershavefallen victim to an elaborate scam.

Promising a believable windfall, it is byno means only the ignorant who are duped.Unsuspecting taxpayers receive an email

from “SARS eFilingAlert”, informing themthey have received a tax credit payment in-to their bank accounts by the SouthAfricanRevenue Service E-filing.This sumcould range fromanything from

R2000 to R8000, making it in range of the av-erage annual tax return payout. The person is then prompted to click on

a link to “confirm online epayment”, and itis on this linkwhere the victim is very clev-erly deceived to give out their banking de-tails.Once this is done, the scammers are

equippedwith the necessary information to

steal funds from your account at any time.[Sars) is aware of this scam and is cur-

rently investigating it.They warns taxpayers to be extra vigi-

lant.“Many taxpayers have already been

scammed and countless others have tele-phoned to enquire about this email,” saysa spokesperson at Sars who warns tax pay-ers not to respond to this email.“The particular email address does not

belong to us and Sars will never prompt an-yone, even e-filers, to provide banking de-tails. If a payment is to be made by us, wewill automatically deposit it into your bankaccount,” he says.“In addition, tax return filing date only

opens onTuesday 1 July, and no return pay-outs could have been made yet.”Sars urges all taxpayers to rather contact

them at their contact centre on 0800 007 277,if they should be unsure about any Sars-re-lated payments.

Cape Town’s two brightest baseball tal-ents are set to test themselves againstthe world’s best when they represent

South Africa at the 15 and under BaseballWorld Cup next month.

Bridgetown’s Lance Gordon and Silver-town’s Keino Davids were called up to thenational team after impressing for WesternProvince. The two are hard at work, train-ingwith theotherCape-basednational teammembers.

Although the duo admits SA is not a bigbaseball nation, they will be heading to theWorld Cup aiming to cause upsets.

“Everyone is going to underestimate us,so when we arrive in Mexico we can showthem South Africans can play the game,”Davids says.

“We work hard and will always try to doour best.”

Gordon and Davids have been membersof Athlone Athletics Baseball Club formorethan seven years.

Both were immediately hooked on thesport after their first time on the diamondand neither has looked back since.

Belgravia High School pupil Davids rep-resented WP both last and this year, whileGroote Schuur High’s Gordon has been inthe WP side every year since 2009, exceptin 2012.

Gordon, first choice catcher at A’s, be-lieves it was his batting that resulted in hisnational call up.

“I’m quite versatile, so I can play any-where the coach wants me to, while still do-ing well,” he says.

“I also hit with power and bring lots ofspirit to the team.”

He further attributes his balling ability isa result of hard work, not only the talent he

inherited from his father.During the baseball season Davids and

Gordon train twice a week, for 90 minutes, and have been doing so with the nationalside as well.

Training is set to step-up in intensity inthe coming days, with two to three-hourlong national team training sessions eachday during the school holidays.

While Davids and Gordon will be givingtheir all at training, theywill each also needto raise R20 000 to fund the trip.

Gordon will host a fundraising party atthe Athlone A’s clubhouse on Saturday 28June and Davids will also host one in thenear future (date to be confirmed).

The International Baseball Fedaration15U World Cup will take place from Thurs-day 31 July toSunday 10August in theMexi-can towns of Mazatlán and Culiacan.V To purchase tickets or assist the players to partici-pate in the World Cup, phone Gordon’s father on084 605 4500 or Davids’ grandmother on079 756 5057.

Vikings, Cats crowned champsLIAM MOSES

@LiamCPT

The Montana Vikings Basketball Clubsurged to victory in the inauguralCape Basketball Championship on

Sunday.Vikings, a juggernaut in Cape basket-

ball, lost just one game throughout thetournament to claim the trophy and R8000in cash. The Championship started at theCape Peninsula University of Technology(CPUT) Cape Town campus with poolmatches on Saturday.

Vikingswere drawn inPool B alongwithCPUT Cats and CPUT Alumni, while Pool

A comprised Constantia-based HurricanesBasketball Club, the University of CapeTown (UCT)and theUniversity of theWest-ern Cape (UWC).

Vikings got their title charge going witha narrow 67-63 win over Cats before losing54-51 to Alumni to finish second in theirgroup, while Cats placed first.

In Group A Hurricanes beat UWC 64-60and UCT 64-38 to finish on top, while UWCfinished second after beating UCT 66-48 intheir other game.

But the scores and results from thegroupstages proved a poor reflection of the teamsinvolved, as both the group winners wereeliminated in the semi-finals.

Hurricanes lost 72-50 to Vikings, whileCats were beaten 84-66 by UWC. Cats wenton to beat Hurricanes 77-70 in the third-place play-off to claim the bronze medal.

AndVikings tookall the spoils after beat-ing UWC 80-75 in the final.

The final of thewomen’s tournament fin-ished with the CPUT Cats first and secondteams battling it out for superiority.

Both teams went into the final undefeat-ed, finishing at the summit of their respec-tive groups. The Cats second team toppedPoolA after defeatingUCT 54-30 andLethalLadies 57-37, while Lethal Ladies were sec-ond after beating UCT 60-22.

The Cats first team beat UWC 62-49 and

Vikings 43-38, and Vikings finished secondin the group after beating UWC 65-41 intheir other match.

The first team dominated their semi-fi-nal fixture against Lethal Ladies, winning68-38, while the second side scraped to a 49-45 win over Vikings. The Vikings women’steam could not emulate their men’s teamby taking home a medal and lost 64-42 toLethal Ladies in the third-place play-off.

In the end, the CPUT first team were toostrong and beat the second team 62-44 totake home the R8000 in cash and the tro-phy.

The annual tournament was hosted byPlatinum Media Group.
