More feet aremaking theirway towardpublictransport interchanges as fuel prices lastweek hit an all-time high. And if the rand’s value continues to plum-

met, more petrol price hikes could be in thepipeline.Lift clubs, cycling and even old-fashioned

walking are some of the alternatives motor-ists are now forced to consider to keep theirbudgets balanced.Taxi driverArnoldDreyer says the clusters

of people waiting at pick-up points havegrown in the lastweek. An increase inpassen-gers is fantastic, he says, as drivers will nowhave to make extra trips to make their dailytargets.

“Most of the stops on my route have dou-bled in the number of passengers. It reallyis a blessing because the petrol price in-crease is really eating at our pockets,” hesays.“No driver will ever say no thanks to ex-

tra bums on the seats.”To which one grumpy, particularly

squashed commuter responded: “Ja, butone seat is made for only one bum!”Taxi fares only increase once a year, and

taxi bosses say there has been no word ona price hike – yet.DouglasMdoda says he has startedwork-

ing an hour earlier to “squeeze in” an extratrip.“I have three kids andawifewhomIneed

to support. If I don’t make my target, myboss doesn’t payme in full and I don’tmakeany extras. We work on a system similarto a commission structure. And if you don’tbring in the money, you don’t get fullypaid.”Switching from his own car to public

transport was an easy decision to make,Ralph Ockers says.He previously travelled about 40kms a

day between home and work, and says therecent petrol price increase would havewreaked havoc on his budget.“I couldmanage if the price per litre rose

by 10c, but to jump by almost R1 is ridicu-lous. Driving yourself to work is now a lux-ury,” he says.Train services apparently haven’t seen a

drastic increase in commuters heading tostations. However, some periods have seen more

bodies make their way through the turn-stiles, says one ticket barrier.“Usually, things slow down between

07:30 and 09:00 as most people would al-ready be close to or atwork. But this periodhas now also become more busy,” he ex-

plains.More “professional-looking” people are al-

so using the train, he adds. “It appears thatmore suit and high-heelwearing commutersare standing on the platforms. It is, after all,the cheapest transport service.”Lizelle Marais works as a personal assist-

ant in the city centre. For five years she has been part of a lift

club, but can no longer afford this “luxury”.“It was either give up the wheels, or give

up the necessities,” she says.“And while travelling by train is most of

the time quite unreliable and in no wayglamorous, it is easy on the pay cheque.”

Brett Herron, the Mayoral Committeemember for Transport, urges motorists toconsider using public transport whereverpossible, or to walk or cycle to take the stingout of the fuel price hike. The capacity of the current roadand trans-

port infrastructure is under increasingpres-sure, resulting in longer peak periods, wors-ening congestion, andwasting valuable timein traffic, he explains.“Public transport really is the way of the

future – it is much cheaper, less stressful, and more environmentally-friendly thantravelling by car. It is a crucial factor to in-crease the liveability of the city.”

PETROL PRICE: COMMUTERS SEEK ALTERNATIVES TO GET TO WORK

Fuelled to take public transport

ONE STOP: Taxis are one of the three modes of public transport cash-strapped motorists may consider.

The province needs your blood. This appeal by the WP Blood Trans-

fusion Service comes as stock is declin-ing and is at a three-day blood supply.Possible causes are the three-week

school holiday and donors suffering ofcolds and flu and therefore being una-ble to donate. It is also the start of Ramadaan,

whichmeans a large number of donorswon’t be able to donate due to the fast.“We are appealing to the public to do

something remarkable and support thecause of blood donation,” says spokes-person Marlize Mouton, adding “30minutes from you could mean a life-time for someone else”.A single donation will make an impact

on the lives of at least three patients indire need of blood.

Although all blood groups are needed, there is a great shortage of the O-bloodgroup.

GroupO-blood is compatiblewith allother blood groups and most oftenused in cases of emergency.People older than 16, weighingmore

than 50kgs, who are in general goodhealth and lead a safe lifestyle are eli-gible to donate blood.Donors must remember to eat a sub-

stantial meal within three to fourhours before donating and increasenon-alcoholic fluid intake. You can donate blood at the perma-

nent clinic at Blue Route Mall inTokai. It is open all week and on Satur-day from 09:00 to 14:45 and Sundayfrom 09:00 to 11:45.V Visit www.wpblood.org.za for more clinic de

tails. Alternatively email [email protected], call(021) 507 6300 or SMS the word “Blood” to 33507and officials will call you back with the information.

Police remain on the hunt for 32-year-oldBronwyn Lakay after a little girl was killedin a hit-and-run in Hanover Park. Also known as Bassier Lodewyk, the sus-

pect is wanted for questioning in connec-tion with a culpable homicide case whichtook place in Stonelands Road on the after-noon of 24 May.According to police spokesperson Lieu-

tenant Ian Bennett, Phillipi police officialsspotted a suspicious black Volkswagen Jet-ta in the area.As officers approached the vehicle, the

driver sped off in the direction of the sportsfield in Stonelands Road.Bennett says Lakay drove the vehicle

straight onto the sports field where seven-year-old Adeelah Oliver and her threefriends were playing. In an attempt to escape police, the driver

hit the girl and immediately fled in the ve-hicle.“The child was declared dead on the

scene,” says Bennett.Adeelah’s cousin, who asks not to be

named, witnessed the tragedy unfoldingfrom her bedroom window while cleaningthe room.“I saw the car coming and screamed. Just

as I ran out towards her, the car drovestraight into her,” says the visibly dis-traught relative.Sheadds that she saw threemen jumpout

of the vehicle as police officers gave chase.“Iwas in such a panic. I didn’t knowwhat

to do. I called for my aunt to help.”Bennett says the two passengers have

been questioned and agreed to serve as wit-nesses. They are not being charged. The aunt, Shameema Karriem, was look-

ing after her nieceAdeelahwhile hermoth-er worked. Karriem says the family stillgrapples with the grief.A month has passed since that devastat-

ing day.Adeelah’s cousin describes her as the

type of girl who could creep into anyone’sheart.

“She was so loving and playful.”For Faghmeeda Oliver this is a cruel twist

of fate – her daughter Adeelah died on her40th birthday.“Each time she sees the other children go-

ing to school it breaks her heart,” says Kar-riem.Oliver says that although nothing will

bring her little girl back, she feels justicemust be done and the law must to take itscourse. Her father Adiel Carolissen aches for jus-

tice.“I will not rest until they find him.”A case of culpable homicide is being inves-

tigated.Anyone with information regarding the

whereabouts of Bronwyn Lakay is urged tocall Philippi police on 021 690 1526 or Detec-tive Sergeant Basson on 073 176 1730.

The crime rate in Cape Town remains a ma-jor concern. Residents are faced with end-less social ills andpolice are constantly bom-barded with complaints from citizens.Provincial Minister for Community Safe-

ty Dan Plato has announced that 25 publicmeetings will be held over the next sixmonths to address crime. These meetings will act as a platform for

community safety structures and residentsto voice their concerns and offer solutionsin a bid to address the problem.People’s Post took to the streets to find out

whether residents think these meetingswould be effective in curbing crime.

TTalkalk the tthe talkalk

RROCHENOCHEN TURNERTURNER believes the meetings will beeffective in reducing crime. “Many people are notaware that if somebody talks about it, it couldmake a positive contribution. The governmentshould approach people and ask for suggestions.”

VVAASHTISHTI VISVISSERSER thinks the community needs towork closely with the government to reduce thisscourge. “I think that by reporting crime and form-ing neighbourhood watches, we can assist in thecrime reduction.”

MICMICAELAAELA JOOSJOOSTETE says people are losing faith inthe government. “A lot of crimes are being com-mitted in poor communities. I think these meet-ings are a political ploy because nothing is beingdone to address complaints.”

KIRKIRSHINSHIN ABRABRAHAMSAHAMS suspects the meetings maybe a political move. “The elections are coming upand I think it is just a way for the governmentto gain people’s support.”

BERNHARDBERNHARD FRFRANKANK believes government’s wordsneed to be supported by firm action. “They needto translate their promises into services. Themeetings will only be good if there are results.”

BRIAN KBRIAN KOCKOCK AND ZAND ZAIN GAIN GALLIEALLIE say more shouldbe done to reduce the crime rate. Kock says: “Po-lice arrest criminals, but no further action is tak-en.” Gallie agrees. “They make empty promises.”

LINDALINDA VISVISSERSER thinks the meetings are a step inthe right direction. “More severe punishmentneeds to be enforced. The government needs tocleanse its own system before focusing on crime.”

Working as a street newspaper vendor formost of his life, Dennis Engelbrecht’s liveli-hood now hangs in the balance after he washit by a bus in Manenberg last Mondaymorning.Manenberg police spokesperson Lieuten-

ant IanBennett says the driver of theGoldenArrow bus was reversing and trying to parkwhen he hit Engelbrecht, who was believedto be standing in the driver’s blind spot.Engelbrecht (53) remains in hospital with

two broken legs pending a possible opera-tion.During a hospital visit, Engelbrecht told

his partner Dorothy Solomons that he wascrossing the road to sell someone a newspa-per when the bus knocked him.“He had a stroke before so he can’t move

as quickly as he used to,” she says.“All that I keep telling him is that God is

good. I just can’twait to have himbackhomewhere he belongs. The bed is so cold withouthim,” his life partner says with a smile.Solomons recalls seeing police and ambu-

lance vehicles all around as she made herway to the corner of Duinefontein and Klip-fontein roads where Engelbrecht sells hisnewspapers everyday. “I got such a hugefright, I ran toward him and just saw himlying there,” she says.“I began yelling, asking the people around

what had happened. I couldn’t believe itwhen they toldmehewasknockedby abus.”Bennett says after the accident Engelbre-

cht was immediately transported to GFJooste Hospital for treatment and was latertaken to Groote Schuur Hospital.Solomons says that Engelbrecht has al-

ready undergone one operation.“Metal plates were placed in his hips and

legs. We are now waiting to hear if he needsa second operation.”She adds that Engelbrecht has been a

newspaper vendor for more than 20 yearsand this accident will be quite a setback for

him.Golden Arrow spokesperson Bronwen

Dyke confirms they are aware of the inci-dent.She says that the information they re-

ceived was that the driver was reversing inorder to park and did not realise that thenewspaper vendor had moved behind thebus.“The driver was suspended immediately

in accordance with internal operating pro-cedure and our investigation will inter aliaestablish whether the driver followed thestandard safety protocol while reversing,”Dyke says. Police have confirmed that a caseof reckless and negligent driving will be in-vestigated to determine the exact cause.Anyone with information is urged to call

Manenberg police on 021 699 9400.

At night the homeless huddle togetherfor warmth and safety under bridgesand in subways where nobody elseventures. So when they are woken up with a

hot bowl of home-made soup, the im-pact is huge.“Nobody speaks to them, nobody

gives them the time of day,’’ saysNuraan Hesselberth (27).Together with a small group of vol-

unteers,Hesselberth delivers hot soupand sandwiches as well as clothes tovagrants in Athlone, Wynberg, Mui-zenberg,KalkBay and anywhere inbe-tween.She says one group of three men got

such a fright when she woke them, they dived under their blankets. It all startedwhen she saw a friend’s

status on Facebook – a photograph ofpolice covering the bodies of threechildren who had died of the cold in CapeTown. She felt compelled to do something tohelp.Using social media she appealed for dona-

tions, which were soon flooding into hermodest townhouse.People shedidn’t knowarrived tohelp sort

the donations of clothes for easy distribu-

tion. One couple offered the use oftheir bakkie and their gas stove, and another offered the use of theirtruck. They have done three such mis-

sions already, driving on until eve-rything has been given out. Thestove allows them to serve the foodhot.Relaying the story of a woman

who asked for a pair of shoes for herson, Hesselberth says: “There arejust certain things you can’t forget.’’She returned later with her little

boy showing off his new shoes, as ifto prove she had not been lyingabout having a child. Herself amother of two young children, Hes-selberth says when she tucks herownchildren in at night she realiseshow much she has in comparison.“That moment with the little boy

was really hard for me, especiallyhaving lost a baby in February this

year,” she says, choking on her words astears pool in her eyes.“The children knock me a bit hard.’’The charity, Ayla’sWings, has been creat-

ed in honour of her stillborn child. She describes the poverty they witness as

“unbelievably heartbreaking’’.Hesselberth says those who cannot afford

to stay in a homeless shelter sleep up againstits wall.“One guy drank his soup, but kept half for

his dog. They have nothing, but they havemanners,’’ she says, adding men will oftencarry food to the women and children.“Some of them drink, sniff glue and smokethings, whateverputs theminanotherplace. You can’t blame them, I wouldn’t want to besober in that situation either.’’She says aword and a touch is appreciated

as much as the material goods.“They want to hold my hands or put an

arm across my shoulders.’’Amansheknowsonly asWilliam is “prob-

ably one of the most grateful people I haveever come across inmy life’’. Too shy to evenstep forward for some food, she says she hadto joke that the soup wasn’t going to cometo him.V Hesselberth prefers donations of clothes or food tocash. Despite numerous complaints of promiscui-ty, public indecency and robberies occur-ring at a contentious site in Newfields, theCity of Cape Town has decided not to put theerf on the market. This comes after the property was three

years ago considered for inclusion in coun-cil’s sales programme, which sees proper-ties which are not in use being disposed ofthrough resale. And while hopeful residents looked for-

ward to seeing the land separating LodewykCrescent from Turfhall Road being pur-chased and put to use, aggravated locals arenow questioning why the root of their trou-ble is not being chucked.Rashaad Harris, who lives next to the

sandy site, says the “filthy deeds” have goneon for long enough. “I have had it. Sellingthe property would have been the perfect so-lution to all this. When is this ever going tobe resolved? We are ratepayers, yet we haveto sit with this nonsense going on on ourdoorstep,” he fumes.Moos Mohammed says the scenes that

play out in the lane on a Saturday night “ri-

vals the sex nonsense they play on etv”.“It’s dirty, man. The people who roll

around in the sand don’t even live here.Who do they think they are to turn our dig-nified area into cesspit for such behaviour? And don’t get me started on the skollies thatsteal from hardworking people and use theveldjie as a getaway route,” he says.“The solution is simple: fence the plot in

and keep them out!”The property was previously zoned for

municipal purposes and could not be fencedoff as council required unfettered access tothe erf for maintenance purposes. But Garreth Bloor, the Mayoral Commit-

tee member for Economic, Environmentaland Spatial Planning, says the property isnow zoned as Community Zone 1, for whichprimary uses include places of worship, clinics and public open spaces.Three years ago, council’s property man-

agement department confirmed the proper-ty was being considered for inclusion in thedepartment’s sales programme.Brett Herron, the acting Mayoral Com-

mitteemember forFinance, says thedepart-ment’s selection of property for the disposalprogramme is influenced by strategic objec-

tives such asmaintenance costs, demand andsupply of property in the area and the proper-ty market environment.“The site is deemed not suitable for dispos-

al with the current zoning in place and willrequire extensive resources to prepare thesite for disposal,” he says.Resident Derrick Rhoda says he is not sur-

prised by council “once again disappointingthe people of Newfields”. “They don’t livehere. They aren’t exposed to this rubbish wehave to accept. We aren’t asking for multi-million rand investments – all we want is forthis problem pathway to be resolved,” he

seethes. “I don’t understand why they can’terect the fence and get it over with. We payour rates; it’s time to showuswhere it goes.”ButHerron says the closure of this “pedes-

trian access” will require careful considera-tion and comment from various council de-partments as it is “very convenient” forthose travelling on foot. “From a planningpoint of view, closing off the property isproblematic as it is clearly used by pedestri-an traffic to and from Turfhall Road whichis abus and taxi route. It separates thepedes-trians from the heavily trafficked intersec-tion of Turfhall and Newfields roads.”

It has become a familiar and accepted sight, one whichpasses with nary significance every Tuesday before thedreaded fuel price hike kicks in.That’s when drivers line up bumper-to-bumper at pet-

rol stations to fill up ahead of the petrol price hike thefirst Wednesday of that month. The media has ad nauseum given tips on how to beat

the fuel price hikes.Drivers are encouraged to take publictransport, from trains and taxis toRikkis, car pooling andeven cycling or walking. And, for those resilient drivers who have been able to

continue using their cars to work, here’s fair warning:there’s another fuel price hike on the cards for nextmonth. It’s a leap and you may well want to investigatehow you can institute some of those tips.Thenext increase due onWednesday 7August is report-

ed to be 61c. And it will hit your pocket hard as it erodesyour disposable income. With the petrol price after thismonth’s already steep 84c increase standing at R12.86, thenew price hike will bring the cost of a litre of petrol toR13.47. The department of energy attributes the fuel in-crease to the weak rand and international crude oil pric-es.Even so, South Africa is reportedly in a middle ground

when it comes to fuel cost extremes.Using the exchange rate as at Thursday 20 June, when

US$1=R10.23, onenewspaper survey found that thepetrolprice in South Africa was the 40thmost expensive amongthe countries investigated. At the time petrol cost R13.23a litre.Venezuela was the cheapest, at 11c a litre, while the US,

in 51st place, charged R9.51c a litre.Themost expensive country to fill upwas Turkey. Driv-

ers there paid R26.97 for a litre of petrol.Other European countries also exceeded the R20 a litre

bracket. Drivers here may argue that the incomes of thisdeveloping nation do not compare favourably with thoseof European countries.Brace yourselves.

Madiba magic is realDo you believe in magic? I do and I’ll tellyou why.Never again will we have one like him;

Nelson Mandela is an icon and a legendto millions, yet it is his humility thatmakes him so loveable.Having sacrificed somanyyears for the

liberation of our people, our dream wasfinally realised when he lead the countryto its first democratic elections. And, likea storybook hero, he was at the helm andcontinued to serve his people. That “he was born to lead” or that he

is a “living legend” falls way short of themagnanimity of this man and his sacri-fice.We should remember his family, too,

had to endure hardships (by) growing upwithout a father, husband and grandfa-ther and, in later years, having to sharehim with the rest of the world.Besides the sacrifices, it is also his

“MadibaMagic” that touches (and) envel-ops you, whether you are in the sameroom or not. Whenever he spoke, wheth-er it is serious or with that witty twinklein his eye, you always felt he spoke to youalone. That is my experience, and I am sure

the experience of many, although I didhave my moment “alone” with him.It was 1994 and he was only president

for a fewmonths. At the time, South Afri-ca was opening diplomatic relations withmany new countries and I was fortunateto be part of a media contingent to coversuch an event.Mynerveswere shot.Herewasmyhero

and a man whom we had literally foughtfor to be free and I was going to be in thesame room with him.I was the only woman photo-journalist

in the room and had this small, manualfixed-lens SLR Canon camera while eve-ryone else in the room had zoom lenseslonger than my arm.So I did what any determined, curious

and enamoured “professional” would do.I elbowedmyway to the front andpleadedto be (there) because of my fixed lensproblem. They obliged. It led not to thebest photograph or story, but to the best

memory of my life. The red carpet was laid out, the digni-

taries had arrived and then the an-nouncementwasmade: “The president ofthe Republic of South Africa, Mr NelsonMandela...”Phew! I couldn’t breathe! There I was

– from Hanover Park and in Parliament, whohad just 10 years beforebeen fightingin those very streets and the surroundsto free thisman – and there hewas. It wasan OMG moment. At the time Madiba was still wearing

dark lens glasses because of the damageto his eyes over the years, but he lookedno less handsome. He was tall, so muchtaller than I expected, upright, almost re-gal and so handsome. He walked into the room and greeted

everyone and because I was in the frontrow behind the barrier line I could seehim clearly and I guess he could see me,too. He walked over to me and said: “I see

we have a lady amongst all the men.” Hewas talking tomeand aboutme. He shookmy hand. Never one to keep my mouthshut I replied: “Hmmm, I can see thereis nothing wrong with your eyesight MrPresident.”He was about to respond when the an-

nouncement that the programme wasabout to start interrupted any further ex-change. But that was enough.I almost forgot to complete the assign-

ment I was sent on. I, of course, had towrite a thank you letter. It was short andsweet and said: “I never thought that sosoon after democracy, a member of thepublic would be allowed into parliamentwith a Canon to shoot the president.”I addressed it to Nelson Mandela, put

a stamp on it and that was that, or so Ithought. One month later, my postbox in Hano-

ver Park received an acknowledgementfrom the highest office in the land.It proved to me then, and now, that the

MadibaMagic is real! It will live on forev-er.Long live, Madiba! Long live!Zahieda van der Forte

Act now to saveprecious waterOur global water supply is becoming moreof an issue every day. Even though the earthconsists of 70%water, only 1% of that is safeto drink and 20-30% is in glaciers or other-wise unattainable. If water had to run outthe earth would become a place of torment(and) people would die.We never think about this issue. People’s

comments are: “Water is not expensive andI don’t care”, “It is none of my business”,“It’s the government’s duty” or “The futureis so far away. I don’t care!”Many continents’ glaciers will shrink dra-

matically by 2050. Most of the 12 desert re-gions will face a drier future by the end ofthis century. By 2025more than half of coun-tries will face fresh water stress or shortag-es.By 2050 75%of theworldpopulation couldface fresh water scarcity including one bil-lion people in Asia. In 2080 water shortagescould threaten 3.2 billion people out of theseven billion on this earth and that is in thefuture.Today only one in six people don’t have ac-

cess to water. The ice on Kilimanjaro hasshrunk 85% in 100 years. TheAral Sea is one10th of the size it was 50 years ago.We will watch loved ones die just because

we acted irresponsibly with water resourc-es. Because people acted emotionless to thistopic (it) certainly does not mean we cannotmake a difference to the world. It starts withsomething small and ends in something big.Water is earth’s most precious resource.

Water is the medium of life. It is the mostabundant compound found in all organisms. It varies from 65-89% in different organisms.Human tissues contain about 20% water inbone cells and 85% in brain cells. Almost allthe reactions of a cell occur in the presenceof water. Water is essential because if wedon’t drink it, we will become dehydratedand die. Plants need it, and most plants arefood, which we also need to live. Animalsneed it, which we need as food, too.Everything and anything that’s beenman-

made or earth-made goes back to water! Wa-ter is aprecious resourcebecause all ourdai-ly activities are carried out with the help ofwater. As Dr Seuss said: “Unless someonelike you cares a whole awful lot, nothing isgoing to get better. It’s not.”Lauren Gericke (12)

While other teenagers spend their timeon idle pursuits, a group of youngstersare plotting their next move to help theircommunity.Calling themselvesMakingOriginality

Beautiful (MOB), six youngsters areputting their talents to good use to raisefunds. They model, sing and dance.MOB manager Roekshana Adams says

in spite of the group having failed at theirfirst attempt to raise funds for an old-agehome, they are already planning theirnext event.“What makes us unique is that we are

young and we pride ourselves in that wedon’t promote the use of alcohol or drugs, which is a factor influencing our youthtoday,” she says.Earlier this year, the group hosted an

event at the Retreat Civic Centre andhoped to donate half of their earnings to-wards an old-age home of their choice.“We had hoped to make enough money

to donate to a charity. We were not ableto, but we will not stop there,” a deter-mined Adams says.Founding member Isgaak Cassiem (19)

says MOB is about giving youngsters theplatform to strut their stuff and at the samegive back to their communities.

The idea was generated once the young-sters realised thatwith their free time theycan use their unique talents to raise funds

for the less fortunate.“It was tough in the beginning, but we

have set a goal for ourselves. This organi-

sation has brought somany different peo-ple together from different areas, allwanting to give back to the community,”he says.MOBplans tomake their first donation

to the Beit-un-Nur home, but also hasmany other ideas for the future to assistthose in need. They are planning a blan-ket drive and aim to also collect second-hand clothing for the poor.Fay-yaadh Samuels (19) from Hanover

Park says he joined MOB to help themany children facing tough times.“We might only be doing this for fun,

but we have a goal in mind and that is toensure that we are looking after thosewho don’t have,” he says.“Some people take the little things for

granted, but that is what MOB hopes toaddress. We hope to give back to the poor-er members of the community.”Ashraf Karriem (18), a model from Ot-

tery, says giving back to the destitutemakes him feel good.“It could easily have been any of us in

such a position. I know that if I was poor,I would want people to care and try and

help me,” he says.V MOB is calling on the rest of the community tocome forward and assist them in achieving theirgoals. Anybody interested can contact Roekshana on078 396 7083.

ramadaan mubarak2013/143409 july – 08 august

THE NIYAAT OF FASTING IS:

Nawaitu Sauma-Ghadin An-Adaai Fardi-Ramadana, Ha-Thee-His Sanati, Li-la-Hi Ta'Aala

“I intend to fast for the coming day in order to perform my duty towards Allah in the month of Ramadaan in the present year”

NIYAAT FOR BREAKING FAST IS:

Alla-Humma Laka-Sumtu Wa'ala Rizqi ka aftar-Tu “Oh Allah, for Thy Glory have I fasted, and now I break the Fast with food that cometh from Thee”

ALLAH SAYS IN THE HOLY QUR’AAN

Surah 11 - Ayat 185

Ramadaan is the (month) in which was sent down The Qur’aan, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment

(between right and wrong) So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month, should spend it in fasting, but if any one is

ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you, He does not want to put you

to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to Glorify Him in that He has guided you, and perchance ye shall be grateful.

SIX SUNNATS DURING RAMADAAN

would like to wish all our Muslim readers a blessed Ramadaan Mubarak

Progressing to a top-two finishLIAM MOSES

Athlone’s Progress RFC have targeted asecondplace finish inDivisionFour af-ter starting the second round ofmatch-

es with three consecutive victories. The City Park based club lost three and

drew one of their first eight games in theleague, but the second round has seen themnotch up wins against Cities and YoungBrothers in June and thrash Delft RFC 44-13on Saturday.Assistant coach Carlo Booysen says his

team’s good form is the result of a rediscov-ered appreciation for the rule book.“In the first round we dropped a couple of

points against teams we shouldn’t have lostto because of our discipline.“But we have started the second round

well and today was another positive per-formance,” he says.“Building fromhere, we can end in second

place. I don’t think we can catch the first-placed team because they are way ahead ofus on points.”Progress were dominant from the first

whistle against Delft and their performance

was reflected on the scoreboard as theyraced to an 18-0 half time lead.Flyhalf Jethro Knoll slotted two penalties

in the 10th and 15th minutes and convertedthe first of Rashied Davids’ two tries in the25th and 40th minutes.Progress continued where they left off in

the second half, with a tries fromGamatKel-ly and Stanton Arendse, in the 10th and 14thminutes respectively. Both were convertedby Knoll.Delft finally added a touch of respectabili-

ty to the scoreline with two penalties fromDelano September at the 55th and 60thminute marks and a try from Randall Klim, which September also converted. However, Progresswere not donewith the

scoring andhammered the final nail into thecoffin when Shane Fortune finished off along-range counter-attack. Knoll capped theperformance with another conversion.Booysen was happy to come out of the

game with the bonus point victory, but saidhis side had expected the game to be “easy”.“It was a good performance because we

came from a three-week bye, so this is oneof our first games back. Many of guys didn’t

train during this period,” he says.“Theguys cameout tops. The first half per-

formance wasn’t great, but we picked it upand some good changes were made in thesecond half. We got the bonus point, whichis a plus.”Progress have a bye thisweekend, butwill

hope to take a major step towards their goalof finishing second on the table on Saturday20 July, when they face current second-placed side Bishop Lavis. In other results from theweekendsmatch-

Stage set for soccer showpieceLIAM MOSES

After hours of gruelling training ses-sions and six pressurised qualifyingmatches, 16 football teamswill reap the

rewards when they play in the finals of the10th annual Engen Knockout Challenge. The Challenge will pit Cape Town’s best

under-17 footballers against each other in abattle for the prize money, bragging rightsand possibly the chance at a professional ca-reer.People’s Post is the tournament’s printme-

dia sponsor. Many of South Africa’s most celebrated

professional footballers first made a namefor themselves or were scouted at the EngenKnockout.Edries Burton, chief operations manager

at host club Santos FC, urged the currentcrop of players to make the most of their op-portunity and emulate the Engen Knock-out’s most famous products.“As a former player, my challenge to the

young players is that there is an opportunityhere. If you look at Thulani Serero – this iswhere it started for him and look where it’sgoing,” he says.“The stars are the limit for these young

players. Who knows where they can end up?They are young and have the world at theirfeet. They can make a decision to finish fur-ther than Thulani Serero; it’s entirely up tothem.”Over 100 teams started the qualifying

process at the beginning of June and onThursday the 13 teams whomade it throughwere divided into groups along with auto-matic qualifiers Ajax Cape Town, ChippaUnited and Santos FC.Group A contains Pinelands club Old Mu-

tual Academy, Mitchell’s Plain’s KenparkUnited, Green Point Salesians and IslandRoversIn Group B defending champions Ajax

Cape Town, National First Division (NFD)side Vasco da Gama, Cape United and KuilsRiver United will vie for the top two spotsof the group.Engen Santos, Hanover Park FC, Kraai-

fonteinCity andGrassyPark sideCrusadershave been drawn in Group C, while GroupD will pit the NFD’s Chippa United, BishopLavis FC, Atlantic Nacional and Clare-mont’s ASD Academy against each other. In past years the tournament was hosted

at the Stephen Reagan Sports Complex inWestridge, Mitchell’s Plain, but the 2013tournament will be played at William Her-bert Sports Grounds, home of the Cape Dis-trict Local Football Association (CDLFA), inWynberg.Winston Engledoe, president of the CDL-

FA, says the new venue gives participantsa whole new list of stars to look up to.“Since unity we have a produced a few in-

ternational players, namely Mark Wiliams,Gerald Stober, Roger Links and Benni Mc-

Carthy,” he says.“CDLFA and theWilliamHerbertMunici-

pal Field Management Committee wish youall the best for another great and successfultournament.”Engenmarketing manager Brad Bergh al-

so announced that, as part of the 10th anni-versary celebrations, one of the players willbe selected to join the Engen High Perform-ance Programme at the High PerformanceCentre in Pretoria. The tournament will also have a charity

initiative this year, with R500 being donatedto the Red Cross War Memorial hospital forevery goal scored in the final of the tourna-ment.The Engen Knockout Challenge will take

place from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 August.
