This, patients say, is owing to the grossly understaffed facility not being able to cater to the community it serves. Long, uncomfortable queues and under- staffed stations are also becoming a bone of contention for residents. An elderly patient says she waits on aver- age for two days for her heart and water re- tention tablets. “I got to the clinic at 07:00 on Monday (11 August) morning and by the time they closed I was still waiting. I only got my tablets at 15:00 on Tuesday afternoon,” she laments. She insists the pharmacy is short staffed and unable to deal with the number of pa- tients in need of medication. “I don’t see them ever taking a break and if they are tired they can easily make more mistakes. The doctors are encouraging us to protest because the health department is not giving them the staff needed to accommo- date all the patients,” she claims. A hospital staff member, who asks not to be named for fear of victimisation, says they work with what they have but are unable to cope. “We have an electronic system. You come in, collect your folder, visit the doctor and then come to the pharmacy. I don’t think the rest of the facility is short staffed; we simply can’t keep up with the multitude of patients. There is somehow a problem between how quickly patients see the doctors and how long they have to wait for medication,” the employee says. Provincial health department spokesper- son Sithembiso Magubane says like all hos- pitals and clinics, they make use of regulated systems. “Hanover Park Community Health Centre has an electronic appointment sys- tem with timeslots for all service areas, done daily,” he says. “Hanover Park sees about 900 patients a day and 19 000 a month.” He says each pharmacist sees up to 500 pa- tients a month. But patients say this number is skewed, claiming double the number is seen month- ly. Some outraged residents say special pro- vision is not made for the elderly and disa- bled. “Last week a woman collapsed from standing. There are not enough seats and the seats that are there get taken up by the youngsters. They should see to the elderly first. I’m 62 already. There is no one else to fetch my tablets and I need them so I stand and wait. They should only allow a certain number of people at a time and not more than they can handle,” a patient says. Magubane says the hospital sees to as many patients as possible. “There is no cap on how many patients are seen to a day. This is a 24-hour unit and walk- ins are also assisted,” he says. “Elderly people as well as wheelchair- bound patients are given preference.” But the hospital employee says although this should be the case, it isn’t always possi- ble. “We don’t ever want to turn anyone away but residents need to understand the clinic, just like other clinics in the poorer ar- eas, were not built to handle the capacity it caters to. So we work according to a system, but cannot always get to all the patients. Even if we did give preference, the lines would still be long because the majority of the people are elderly.” she says. HORSING AROUND: Proudly Manenberg treated the women of Manenberg to a day of leisure on Women’s Day, Sat- urday 9 August. The procession started at the Manenberg Waterfront and picked up women along the way to join in the tour of the streets. With their seven horses strapped in the women were treat- ed like royalty. LANSDOWNE: NEW STATION COMMANDER APPOINTED

‘I am fit for the job’SAMANTHA LEE

@Samantha_Lee121

A new top cop has been appointed.Colonel Jan Alexander started his

term as station commander ofLansdowne Police Station onMonday 4 Au-gust and has high hopes for change.“I’ve been very busywith the administra-

tive side of the job, so I have not yet had theopportunity to meet all the members andhavemuch interactionwith them,” he says.Alexander started his career in the police

force in 1988 and hasmoved swiftly throughthe ranks. With 26 years in the servicehe sayshehas

built the courage and expertise necessary torun a smooth ship.“I have this current rank for the past

eight years and although I have never beena station commander I am ready for thechallenge,” he says.“I come fromamanagerial background in

the force where I once was responsible foreight stations.”Alexander has worked in every level ex-

cept national and has a background in visi-ble policing andwas provincial commanderfor ports of entry for both the Eastern andWestern Cape.Looks, he says, can be deceiving.“People will look at me and think I am

soft, and yes I can be a soft leader but I canalso be hard and harsh. Discipline is a toppriority for me and people should respectthat,” he says.“I made it very clear when I got here that,

I’m not here for love and friendship. I amhere to work.”He plans to take the station to new

heights.“I want to improve on service delivery

and get the station to its top potential,” hesays. Admitting the station has shortcom-ings he says it is one of the topics that willbe addressed.Community Policing Forum chairperson

Thetha Sithole says Alexander has a toughjourney ahead.“Wewelcome thenewstation commander

with open arms. We want to wish him welland hope he has a prosperous journey inthis very demanding job. We know he hasthe wisdom and strength to lead us and hisleadership is welcomed and appreciated,”he says.Alexander says with the formal introduc-

tions complete, his attentions are now focu-used on the community.“The residents of the Lansdowne policing

precinct must rest assured that I am hereto lead and Iwant them to seemeas a leader.Residents must know they can rely on mebecause Iwant to take the station to thenextlevel in respect to performance and empha-sise service delivery to the community.”Alexander saysmeeting with the commu-

nity officially bymeans of an imbizo will al-low residents to voice their concerns andraise questions with him and Nyanga Clus-ter commander Major-General Robbie Rob-berts.Plans for the first imbizo are already in

place for Sector one consisting ofLansdowne, Ottery, Wetton and Groenvlei. It will take place on Tuesday 19 August

at Groenvlei High School at 18:30 for 19:00.

RONDEBOSCH EAST: RESIDENTS TAKING BACK THEIR STREETS

It’s time to walk the talkSAMANTHA LEE

@Samantha_Lee121

Residents in the Lansdowne district aredetermined to see an end to crime intheir neighbourhoods.

Following a spike in burglaries and hi-jacking in the area, residents are taking ac-tion.In the past few weeks another neighbour-

hood watch has been established to fight therecent crime scourge as Rondebosch Eastresidents say enough is enough.Third Watch chairperson Elaine Theron

says thewatch has already notched up smallsuccesses. “ThirdWatchhas brought togeth-er residents from the area to see an end to

burglaries through patrolling the area andtaking back their avenues with pride anddignity,” she says.According to Theron residents are excited

to take back their streets and have alreadyshown support.“The first mass patrol took place on Fri-

day 11 July and proved that residents are de-voted to and sincere about safety. We alsoplayed a part in the apprehension of two sus-pects wielding hammers over that week-end,” she says.In a commonnew trendmany of the neigh-

bourhood watches in the Athlone districthave adopted a block system where a streetcaptain is elected to patrol that area.Kenwyn neighbourhood watch member

Mark Kleinschmidt says the block systemhas become an effective crime fighting tool.“Wepatrol sometimes as early as 04:00 and

it has benefited our community a great deal.We are also happy to see somany active resi-dents participating in the initiative.”Another common practice is the use of a

socialmedia application to track and informresidents of dangers in the area.“Byusing thiswecanenlist thehelp of oth-

er neighbouring watches if we need it andalso inform residents if their gates are openor ifwe see anything suspicious.Overall, thesystem has been very effective and we areseeing a reduction in crime,” he adds.Kenwyn Neighbourhood Watch chairper-

son Andrew Stein says it is also important

for criminals not to be too aware of patrolpatterns.“If we give them this kind of information

it allows them to see us coming and followour schedule. This is also why we change itfrom week to week,” he says.Lansdowne police spokesperson Sergeant

NkululekoMnyaka says their combinded ef-forts are showinga steadydecrease in crime.“The neighbourhood watch structures havebeen a great help in ensuring that any suspi-cious persons or vehicles in their respectiveareas are reported to the police to be checkedout. Break-ins are still problematic but hasshown a decrease during the past month.”Mnyaka encourages residents to join their

neighbourhood watch structures.

MANENBERG: RESIDENTS TAKE CHARGE

On the edgeSAMANTHA LEE

@Samantha_Lee121

Manenberg residents say it is time forchange.About 100 community workers,

residents and officials came together onWednesday 6 August to form a circle of uni-ty in the hope of sending a clear message.Residents say they want to see an end to

the suffering and loss of innocent lives.Manenberg Action Committee coordina-

tor Larenzo Morris says the time has comefor residents to take back their streets.“Enough with the bloodshed, enough

with the fears. The shootings have notstopped and the rape of a four-year-old wasuncalled for. This must end. No more rape,no more murder and no more abuse inManenberg,” he says.Residents were urged to come forward

and share their stories. One resident appealed to the parents.“As parents and grandparents we must

say ‘enough is enough’. If you know your

child is a gangster you must stand upagainst him.“You love your child, but we must show

them they are on the wrong path. We needto give them tough love,” she says.Another resident agrees.“There are good people in Manenberg.

Every child is my child and if they are out-side in my court I am going to send theminside. We must keep every child safe andnot look the other way when we know theyare doing wrong,” the grandmother says.Morris adds they will continue to march

every week until the bloodshed ends.“We will be here without fail, every

Wednesday at 10:00 until it ends. That is ourpromise. We have the right to be free of allforms of violence,” he says.Morris says theywant to alsomake it pos-

sible to convict gangsters in front of a jus-tice committee.“If a gangster picks up a gun he is infring-

ing on our rights. We should come togetherand make sure he gets prosecuted for [in-fringing on] these rights.”

The countdown to the Cape’s biggestyouth soccer showcase has begun. There are only seven days left before

the finals of the 2014 Engen Knockout Chal-lenge kicks-off.And the 16 under-17 teams who will vie

for the spoils andbragging rights are ready-ing themselves to fulfil their ultimatedream of being crowned the champions ofCape Town. For the first time, the winnerswillmatch theirmettle against the other re-gional Engen Knockout Challenge winnersat the Engen Champs of Champs in Sowetoin October. The Cape Town tournament, of which

People’s Post is the print media sponsor, will be held at the Stephan Reagan SportsComplex in Westridge, Mitchell’s Plainfrom Friday 22 to Sunday 24 August. Theteams have already been drawn into com-petitive pools and spectators can look for-ward to tantalising clashes on the pitch. After a round-robin group stage, the

teams will commence with knockoutmatches to eventually crown the 2014 Chal-lenge champions. A total of 48 matches willbe played over the three days.Group A features defending champions

Ajax Cape Town, All Stars Youth FootballDevelopment, Hellenic FC and Old MutualAcademy.

The Urban Warriors will more than like-ly end as the top side in the group, as theylook to palm their fourth consecutive title.Pinelands’ Old Mutual will probably endsecond in the group, but they will facetough opposition from the other two sides. This group has been labelled the dreaded“group of death”.In Group B, last year’s runner’s-up ASD

Cape Town are likely to finish top thegroup, but theywill bewary of the challeng-es from Grassy Park’s Milano United, At-lantic Nacional and debutants WesternCape Sports School.Hosts Santos FC will look to stamp their

authority and intentions to win the tourna-ment by winning Group C, but they willface stiff competition from Mitchell’sPlain’s Liverpool-Portland, Glendene FCand Blue Downs FC.Group D offers the best prospect for min-

nows to advance to the championshiprounds, despite the presence of PSL sideChippa United. The Philippi side have beensomewhat mediocre in the tournament inthe past, which should open the way forgroup victory challenges from Pinelands’JMI Academy, Hanover Park United andCrusaders FC from Grassy Park.Matches on the Friday kick off at 16:00

and 17:00, while the action will be playedfrom 09:30 until 16:30.The action will again kick-off at 09:30 on

the Sunday; the final will be played at 15:30.
