The City conducted a survey in Hanover Park over a period of two years and has re- vealed alarming statistics about violent crime plaguing local streets. The VPUU baseline survey, which was con- ducted with 15% of people living in the area, reveals that of the 60 people murdered in Hanover Park between January 2010 and June this year, 45 were shot, 14 were stabbed and one was beaten to death. Attempted murders for this period show a similar trend as guns were used in 124 of the 126 cases reported. Of those surveyed, 36% of people said crime in the area was intolerable. The survey found that nearly 15% of chil- dren between the ages of seven and 12 years are vulnerable to abuse, while less than 5% of them were used in drug trafficking. Local ward councillor, Antonio van der Rheede, says he is looking forward to the im- plementation phase of the initiative which will see various open spaces transformed into safe thoroughfares for the community. “I think many people are waiting with bat- ed breath for the process to start,” he says. A LANSDOWNE businessman is applyingfor the right to run a salvaging businessfrom a property in the area’s main roadmore than five years after opening upshop.

The owner of Mecca Plan, Shaheem Khan, bought the property in May 2008 and says hedid so after he was given assurance by the es-tate agents at the time that the property wasproperly zoned for his motor spares and sal-vaging business.

Khan says it was only when land use in-spectors investigated the property that hewas informed of his contraventions and im-mediately made the necessary applications.

The property, located at 462 LansdowneRoad, was rezoned for general business usein 1988.

This does not include using the premisesfor the breaking up of motor vehicle spares.

In its report in June to the City of CapeTown’s subcouncil 17, in which this propertyis located, the City’s Land Use Managementdepartment stated that Mecca Plan was usingthe premises illegally “for the breaking-up,storing and selling of second-hand motor ve-hicle spares”.

At the time, the City’s transport and com-munity services departments raised various

objections. The Department of Transportwas concerned that the business would have“a significant negative impact on the sur-rounding road network and surroundingproperties exacerbated by the low numberof on-site parking provided and due to thecurrent strain on the surrounding streetparking”.

The Department of Community Serviceswas opposed to the business as it is of theopinion that all scrap yards should be locat-ed in an industrial zoned area and not insemi-commercial and residential locations.

In his response to these objects, Khan –by way of his environmental consultants,Alliance Built Environment Specialists –said he was of the opinion that the businesshad not created any negative effects in thearea as it is not a major scrap, and salvage/metal recycling business attracting largenumbers of people to the area.

Khan described his business as “just avery reputable, honestly run second-handparts dealer who was advised that the prop-erty was suitably zoned i.e. General Busi-ness, to run a shop, which in essence the cur-rent business is”.

In its recommendations to meet the Cityhalfway, Alliance proposed that Khan couldmake provisions for more parking spaces bydemolishing the existing garage which iscurrently used for storage purposes. In theirmotivation as to why the application shouldbe approved, the environmental specialistcompany said the application sought to rec-tify an existing situation.

Wayne Kolevsohn, owner of SpringbokPharmacy which is located two doors downfrom Mecca Plan, says he has no qualmswith the business.

“It doesn’t pose any negative influence onmy business and the man sells Mercedesand Honda spares so I don’t foresee anyproblems generated by his business. Wehave much more serious issues to deal withthan him, like vagrants selling stolen goodsalong Lansdowne Road,” Kolevsohn, whosefamily has owned the pharmacy for morethan 40 years, says.

Local ward councillor, Anthea Green,

says although she is not opposed to the busi-ness in principle, there are specific conditionsshe believes must be stipulated in the rezoningapproval.

“Because there is essentially no zoning dif-ference between using a property as a scrapyard and using it for a salvaging business, weneed to specify what exactly we are agreeingto,” she says.

“We need to ensure that we are not creating

a legal monster to which people flock withtrolleys full of metal to be sold off.”

A final decision on Khan’s application willbe made early next year.

BLOCKED drains, overflowing sewersand the stench of faeces may soon be athing of the past as the City of Cape Townplans to upgrade the city’s sewerage sys-tem –for the first time in more than 50years.

The tender for the project, which will costan estimated R160million, has been awardedto Aecom Consulting Engineers –16 years af-ter research on the proposed upgrade began.Henk Aartsma, Aecom’s Principal Techni-

cal Manager, says there is an urgent need torefurbish and upgrade the City’s existingsewer system, but that this could not be doneuntil an additional catchment was builtwhere sewage can be drained to.He lists dire consequences for Capetonians

if the upgrade is delayed including sewersoverflowing into roads and rivers and an in-creasedodourproblem inareas suchasHazelRoad in Gatesville.Although the project is still in its logistical

planning phase, it is projected that construc-tionwill start inAugust next year and shouldbe completed by June 2015.Various route options for the laying of un-

derground sewerage pipes have been identi-fied, most of which start near the existingBridgetown sewerage pumping station andend in Philippi. Some of the roads earmarked for possible

underground channelling of sewage pipes in-

clude Hanover Park Avenue, Pook Road inRylands, Turfhall Road in the vicinity ofDoornhoogte and Hazel Road in Gatesville.Aartsma emphasises that a final route has

not been decided on, and that the affectedcommunities’ inputwill be taken into consid-eration when decisions are made.“It is almost impossible to do this project

without affecting the community and weneed towork together tominimise the impactit will have on them,” says Aartsma. He adds that hi-tech trenchless excavation

options arebeing explored, but the feasibilitythereof will need to be evaluated before pro-ceeding.“Costswill double ifwe only use trenchless

excavation for this project. I think it is impor-tant that we pitch it to the community thatyou only do this type of construction once ina lifetime,” Aartsma says. The materials that will be used in the new

sewerage system are designed to last 50years, but when one considers that the exist-ing pipelines are much older than that itcould last even longer, he says.More than 500 000 residents are set to bene-

fit from the project and Aartsma undertookto use local labour –sourced from the affectsubcouncils’ databases – where possible. TheCity’s Mayoral Committee member for Utili-ty Services, Shehaam Sims, thanked Aecomfor the lengths they went to in ensuring theproposed routes would least affect residents.“This project will alleviate years of prob-

lems,” she says.

NURENE JASSIEM-MARCUS

MOUNTVIEW residents are in-censed as they feel they are target-ed by criminals from neighbour-ing communities.

According to Shamiel Omar, whohas lived in the area for more than30 years, these criminals – supposed-ly from Hanover Park – prey on softtargets like children and the elderly.“Our pensioners are robbed of the

little groceries they can afford whenthey walk home from the shops andour schoolchildren are robbed oftheir schoolbags,” Omar says.He says people often do not report

these crimesbecause thieves are longgone by the time residents are able toreact. It is believed thieves discard the

empty bags in an abandoned house inWarden Crescent.Rushdie Desai, chairperson of the

Mountview Neighbourhood Watch, says the organisation has found emp-ty purses and bags in the house whenpatrolling the area.

He says the theft of carbatteries and petty crimeshave increased over theyears.“We feel like prisoners

in our own suburb. Crimehas always been aroundbut we feel there has beenan escalation in the pastfew years. We are undersiege. Our kids can’t evenplay in the road anymore. This area is like a mini re-tirement village and Ithink the thugs know that, and that is why they targetus.”Residents have called for

the lane behind StarlingPrimary School, whichruns between houses from TurfhallRoad to Belmore Avenue, to beclosed.“Why can’t they put a fence around

these lanes, and if council needs to ac-cess their substation (located alongthe lane), they can put a gate on sothat it is kept locked,” Omar sug-gests.Other residents this reporter spoke

to say the lane serves no purpose. But local ward councillor, Magedi-

en Davids, is against this proposal.“We can’t go back to the apartheid

style of segregating communities. The City can’t approve this closurebecause it is a thoroughfare for resi-dents fromHanoverParkand the sur-rounding communities. You can’tbarricade anarea to divorce two com-munities. They want segregation, and that is not normal,” he says. But Omar hit back saying: “They

have more shops in Hanover Parkthan we have here, so I don’t see whypeople must use this lane. It serves

mainly as an easy escape route forcriminals.”Meanwhile, Lansdowne police –

under which Mountview falls – hasrecord of only two incidents reportedin the area in the past three months.“For the past three months only

one attempted murder, which was agang-related incident, spilled fromHanover Park and one aggravatedrobbery was reported,” saysLansdowne police spokesperson,Constable Nkululeko Mnyaka. He did however describe the lane

as a “hotspot” for criminal activity, especially at night.“We call on the community to re-

port crime and also encourage all vic-tims of crime to report it to the policeso that we can deploy police resourc-es where needed most,” he says.Mountview residents may call

their local police sector patrol vehi-cle on0 082 3788 951 or sectormanag-er Warrant Officer Robert Lakey on0 079 894 1218

TAMMY PETERSEN

THE hands clutching a cigarette couldbe those of a businessman, an officeworker or teacher.

The fingernails are neat and the skin issmooth, but Dirk admits his hands havecaused his wife unspeakable pain and al-most led to the destruction of their mar-riage.“I was a wife-beater,” he says simply.

“My wife was my punching bag for years. But I am proof that people can change.”The age-old debate of whether an abuser

can turn over a new leaf is one which willlead to heated arguments for years tocome.Synnov Skorge has been working with

battered and traumatised women for overtwo decades. She is the director of theSaartjie Baartman Centre for AbusedWomen and Children. In the 20 years shehas been advocating for victims of vio-lence, the amount of men reported to havechanged their behaviour has been “mini-mal”.“There have been very few success sto-

ries. Most of the time it’s because the per-petrator lacks the willingness to turn overa new leaf, or because of society’s percep-tion that a strong man is a violent man.”But Sydney Damonse, a religious leader

who works with men’s groups across thecity, believes the cycle of abuse continuesbecause toomuch is being done to help vic-tims while abusers are only seen as the“scum who prey on the weak”.“For every woman that is abused, there

is a man shackled by his ways, crying outfor help. The woman is given support andhelped to rebuild her life. The man? He ischucked in jail.”The pastor says he has seen “hundreds”

of men become loving, peaceful fathersand husbands after tormenting their fami-lies.“All it takes is group counselling and

prayer. The man is a victim of a viciouscycle and while he doesn’t carry the scarsof physical violence, he has deep-rootedemotional struggles prosecution won’tsolve.”As a child, Dirk says he watched his

mother cry herself to sleep at night afterbeing assaulted by this stepfather. He reg-ularly shielded her from the blows whichrained down on her and was with herwhen she was admitted to hospital after asevere beating left her with broken ribs.“I always told myself I would never be

like that man,” he says emphatically. “Iwill never forget the first time I hit mywife. She had gone to a church meetingand came home later than I thought shewould. I was drunk and I was convincedshe was seeing another man. I don’t knowwhat got into me.”

That night, he beat Maria until shestopped fighting back.“I was so angry I gave her one last kick

and left her lying in the kitchen. The nextday when I got up, she was making break-fast. We never spoke about it and madelike it never happened.”For 20 years he tormented her. Some-

times it would be a push, other times shewould be left with broken bones. “It waslike I couldn’t help myself. I don’t knowwhere all the anger came from; sometimesit was about supper, other times about theway she acts. I could see what it was doingto my family, but I felt like I wasn’t in con-trol.”Familymembers used to pleadwith him

to stop the abuse as they feared he wouldeventually kill her. But, he says, he alwaysthought she was the problem and, shouldshe change her ways, he wouldn’t “havea reason” to lift his hands.“One weekend, she hid my alcohol. I

punched her and slapped her into thestreet. Her sister and a neighbour tried tostep in, but I couldn’t stop. Eventually oneof them threw boiling water at me.“Other neighbours came out of their

houses and attacked me. That day I feltwhat it was like to be humiliated.”He never beat her again.“It has been eight years since that day,”

he says. “I won’t say I suddenly realisedthe error ofmyways; itwasmore a realisa-tion that I was capable of killing the wom-an I was supposed to love. My childrenwere also traumatised – I saw I was turn-ing into my stepfather.”He has joined a prayer group at his local

church, but is quick to point out he is “nota Bible-basher”.“Sometimes I still get the urge to beat

her,” Dirk admits. “She knows how topush my buttons, but I love her. It takes

a lot fromme to rather shovemy hands in-to my pockets. But it helps to talk aboutit to other men who understand what I amgoing through.”Maria, an introverted woman with an

aloof air about her, says she never consid-ered leaving Dirk.“I made a promise in front of the altar

to love and look after him,” she says. “Yes,I went through a lot of trying times withhim, but those days are over now. He is adifferent man. He really has changed.”But not all are as lucky as Maria.Sandra’s refrain is short and to the

point: “Once a wife-beater, always a wife-beater. I should know; I have been throughan abusive marriage.”After a whirlwind romance, she mar-

ried Jerome in the 1980s – threemonths af-ter meeting him.The honeymoon phase lasted a week.

“We had an argument about a plate and acup that was in the sink,” Sandra says.“He toldme Iwas lazyandanembarrass-

ment. I was about to launch into a tiradewhen he punched me in the face.”Stunned that her usually charismatic

partner would leave her with a bleedingmouth and a chipped tooth, she spent therest of that day crying.“The next day, he acted as if nothing

happened. He broughtme flowers and toldme I was the best thing that had ever hap-pened to him. Jerome was his old selfagain – loving and gentle.”That was until he fetched her fromwork

onedayand sawher speaking toher super-visor outside.“I got into the car and he greeted me

curtly. Once we were a safe distance awayI felt him grab my hair. He told me I wasa whore who didn’t deserve the life I hadand he literally kicked me out of the car.I walked all the way home,” she says.

The torture continued for three years, during which she was burnt with ciga-rettes, her hair was torn from her scalpand her ankle was twisted.“I left him after he started laying his

hands on our children,” Sandra recalls an-grily.“He promised high and low to change.

He started attending my church, went tosee a psychologist and even became in-volved in themen’s group at our local com-munity centre. I believed he had changedand I allowed him back into our lives.”That, she says, was the biggest mistake

she ever made.“For about twomonths wewere a happy

family; then it started again. After thethird beating, I decided I wouldn’t put my-self through this again. I didn’t have thestrength to take any more.”She filed for divorce a month after mov-

ing in with a friend.“I also laid a charge of assault against

him, for which he got a suspended sen-tence. I felt failed by the justice systemandby the man I had entrusted my future to.I was alone with two children. I neverthought I would be a single mother,” San-dra says.Nearly three years later, she is proud of

how far she has come.“I have worked my way up from being

a messenger to the secretary of a success-ful business in Cape Town,” she says.“While raising two small children, I putmyself through short courses and passedwith flying colours. Because of that, I amable to afford a decent place for my chil-dren to grow up in. Making a success ofme is the best payback ever.”Skorge says the centre focuses on em-

powering the victim to allow her to makethe right decision in terms of the future.“The reasons women stay in abusive re-

lationships range from economic weak-ness to cultural or religious views. Mostof the time their personal safety andwhether they will die at the hands of theirassailants isn’t even the most importantpriority,” she says. The only solution is a harsher crack-

down on abusers, Skorge stresses.“There has to be severe repercussions

and sentences to men who abuse. Untilthen, the femicide across the country willcontinue, and this scourge will continueto erode our society.”WhileDamonse agrees that harsher sen-

tences should be handed down to perpetra-tors, he insists that counselling for menshould also be given priority.“This cycle will never stop until the root

of the problem is addressed. Theman goesinto jail an abuser, and comes out an abus-er. What benefit is there in tossing him ina cell? The men with blood on their handsneed help. And until that is given, this is-sue will be around for centuries to come.”

Work experienceWork experiencefor college studentsfor college studentsADVERTORIAL: Each day South African employersare confrontedwith a shortage of adequately qualified and experienced staff. Students at Further Education and Training (FET) colleges are a good future source of such staff. They can be tried outat a nominal cost to companies and at the sametime develop their skills by offering them a shortperiod of work experience.

As work placement officers our assignment isto place students who are registered for NationalCertificate (Vocational), National Diploma and other college programmes with employers for workplacebased experience (WBE) which could be inthe form of job shadowing or inservice training. Our goal is to place students for between five to10 consecutive days in each year of study for jobshadowing and 18 months for inservice training.During these placements, employers are asked toorientate students to their companies and allowthem to work alongside employees doing jobs related to the students’ field of study. For many young people, obtaining this kind of

work experience has been lifetransforming. Theyhave developed a better understanding of theirchosen career and how it is practised in the workplace. This has motivatedthem to work harder andsucceed. Many studentshave forged relationshipswith employers which ledto immediate offers of employment after graduation.Employers benefit, too.

Students are a source offuture employees that youcan get to know before hiring. By hosting students, employers get a chance toinfluence the training thecollege provides and slantit more towards the needsof your industry. Employerscan also get points on theircompany’s BEE scorecard.Should a company be

willing to host two or moreof our students we wouldgladly assist by facilitating

the placement process. Job shadowing placementfor National Certificate (Vocational) occurs in ourJune/July vacation period. Buying clothesBuying clotheson a budgeton a budget

SPLURGE on clothing you never wear? TracyGold says stop! Here’s how.

Do you know how much you spend on clothingand accessories each month or is it just a blur? Many of us don’t like to discuss, never mindthink about, how much we spend. If you find thatyou keep buying clothing, but still have nothingto wear, then it’s time to reassess. Here are my top tips to making your wardrobe

budget work for you:1. Decide on a budget. Look carefully at what

you are actually spending, what you can affordandwhat youwant to spend. Then commit to thatamount.2. Avoid just buying on accounts. Limiting your

self to stores that offer accounts limits your buying potential. There are many smaller stores outthere that offer good value and somethingunique.3. Take a look at what is in your wardrobe. En

sure that you have a clear idea of what is in thereso you can access what you need before goingshopping.4. Do some wardrobe and budget planning. A

little bit of planning can go a long way to savingyou time and money.Visit www.tracygold.co.za for more informa

SMALL business traders are taking to theCity of CapeTown’s online permit system.

The City’s one-stop-shop online permit sys-tem – or e-permitting – for informal tradershas made it easier for traders to identify andapply for trading space in the city. The online permit system has grown con-

siderably with 1 500 existing permitted infor-mal traders being transferred onto the e-per-

mitting system over the past year.“Following theCity’s informal tradingplan

processes, a total of 3 977 dedicated and per-mitted informal trading site opportunitieshave beenmade available to informal tradersby the City,” a council official says. All existing City-permitted informal trad-

ers are being transferred onto the databaseon an area-by-area basis and should be com-pleted early in 2013.

Once finalised, future traders wanting toapply for available trading space anywherein Cape Town can go to a walk-in centre, where they will be able to create a profile onthe database and apply for available tradingspace.

This single application system ensuresthat the allocation of spaces to traders is fairand efficient, the official says.“Available trading sites are easily identi-

fied. Traders who are already operating in aspace cannot apply for another one some-where else in the city and those traders whohave transgressed bylaws or are in arrearswith their rental payments canbe easily iden-tified.”

Belinda Walker, the Mayoral Committeemember for Economic, Environment andSpatial Planning, says: “This e-permit systemis having many efficiency benefits for theCity and is one of the many ways we are try-ing to modify and simplify regulatory proc-esses to better accommodate small business-es. It is important that Cape Town is a placewhere informal trading can thrive and thise-permitting system is definitely a step in theright direction.”

WHETHER it’s a shove or nasty com-ment, bullying has a disastrous impact.

In a recent incident in Johannesburg, apupil shot and killed a classmate who hadapparently been tormenting him – and oth-

ers – for years. But is enough being done to protect those

on the receiving end of the abuse?People’s Post interns Luzuko Zini andTar-

ren-Lee Habelgaarn polled readers for theirviews.

SaySay ‘no’‘no’ toto bulliesbullies

TTALKALK ITIT OUT:OUT: Ferdinand Nell believes bullyingis part of growing up. “It takes talking to abully to fully understand why they are doingthat. I think it is more of a selfesteem thing;bullies do it for popularity or to boost their selfesteem. Bullying is a natural part of being achild.”

CLOSE WACLOSE WATCH:TCH: Phakama Ncapayi believespupils need to be watched during schoolhours. “The police and school governing bodymembers must be visible at schools so theycan identify the bullies.”

INTERINTERVENE:VENE: Allen Rinquest believes parentsshould get involved should they suspect theirchildren are being victimised. “Parents muststand up for their children and go to talk tothe principals on how to stop bullying.”

NONO SUPPORT:SUPPORT: Gilbert Mapfumo says bullyingis bad and thinks all people deserve to betreated equally. “If you are taught from an early age to respect others and lead by example, bullying shouldn’t be a problem.”

WWALK AWAALK AWAY:Y: Deborah van Rensburg feels ifyou are being bullied, you should be the betterperson and not fight back. “Rather walk away.Sometimes it is difficult because teachers also victimise children.”

EDUCAEDUCATE:TE: Peter Mabutsana says parentsneed to teach their children how to handle bullying and how to treat other people. “If youare taught the right values and how to handlepeer pressure by your parents from a youngage, it will help you. You will then have theright attitude and will know how to handle it.”

School’s outTWELVE years of schooling wind down formatriculants writing their final exams thisweek.

The holidays beckon. Some are castingtheir sights on an easy summer. Fingers aretrained on their cellphones to set in motionlast-minute plans. Rest, relaxation and recu-peration are on the cards.

Many matriculants and students are head-ed for the Plett Rage at Plettenberg Bay.

Some may have notions of using theirschool books as fuel for a bonfire or cut uphated school uniforms. They won’t have toface those dreaded teachers with their non-stop surprise quizzes, assignments and home-work. That is, until the reality of tertiary edu-cation kicks in. For many, the hard workstarts then. And most may deny it, but theywill miss their school days – and even thoseteachers who gave them a hard time.

These are the ones who will face hellishlylong queues for campus registration. Theywill make those absolute final choices overwhich courses to study. They will worryabout transport to new campuses, makingfriends, what to wear. Their parents will wor-ry about paying the university fees.

Four years will go by in a blink, then theywill wonder where they will find employmentas they clutch their newly-earned degrees.

Not so for the families of three matriculantswho died tragically on Saturday. The car inwhich the deceased – Keenan Smith, Leigh-Anne Swail and Kelly Ford – and fellow-ma-triculant Nazan Klaasens were driving collid-ed with a Golden Arrow bus on Spine Road,Mitchell’s Plain. Klaasens is reportedly in astable condition.

Instead of marking another milestone intheir lives, these teenagers will now be forev-er young. This tragedy is a reminder of ourown mortality and that life is, sadly, too short.

We ought to make the most of it – but sensi-bly. May all our young people take extra careand may the departed matriculants rest inpeace.

EVERY DAY millions of the poor must makesacrifices to survive.

We have the trolley patrollers, petty thieves, sex workers, car guards, the self-employed andodd-job people all trying to survive on a pit-tance.

Many of them are looked down upon becauseof their choice of work. They don’t have to dosuch degrading work, but many have familiesto support and debt to pay.

Government says they have structures inplace to alleviate poor people’s burden. Doesgovernment really have this? There are crises

of unemployment, health and education, and alack of housing. Is this the legacy for the nextgeneration? The working class is even strug-gling to make ends meet. They include nurses, doctors, teachers and other civil servants.

I wish our government can explain to the peo-ple what is really happening to the tax payers’money.

We are the working class. We, the people, aresurvivors of the struggle. We have had manysetbacks, but we are learning to adapt to the sys-tem.YOLANDA ANDERSON

WOW! As I started reading the article (“Walkingaway from the pain”, People’s Post, 20 Novem-ber) the hairs on the back of my neck stood upand I couldn’t help but shiver. This was just tooclose to home.

I have just come out of a 10-year relationshipand a three-year marriage and every singleword Sheila told you is the truth: you blameyourself, you believe you did something wrong, this man was never like this before. Maybe Ishould have, as in her case, just left the ironingand made the sandwich. I cannot explain howvery real and completely emotionally over-whelming your article was!

Thank you for having the “balls” to writeabout such a whispered about topic!

Leaving is the hardest thing any woman everdoes, but looking back, I wish I had done it 10years ago. I am emotionally damaged and see

the effects our “fights” had on my now almosttwo-year-old every day. It is horrible and heart-breaking and you never think you are that wom-an.

I don’t know if you have any informationabout meeting places or somewhere womenwho were abused can go to. I would love to knowabout them if you do.

Regards from a completely awestruck womanwho feels so relieved she is not alone!NAME WITHHELDUseful numbers for women and children in situa-tions of abuse: Famsa Cape Town (021) 447 7951;Mosaic Wynberg (021) 761 7585; New WorldFoundation Lavender Hill (021) 701 9744; RapeCrisis Cape Town Trust (021) 447 9762; SaartjieBaartman Centre, Athlone (021) 633 5287; Wom-an Abuse Line 0800 150 150; and Lifeline/Child-line 24-hour line 0800 055 555. - Ed.

SENIOR citizens in poor com-munities have a special placein my heart. And when I hearof or see issues which affectthem negatively I stand to at-tention.

I have numerous friends onthe Cape Flats who share mypassion when it comes to as-sisting the poorest of thepoor.

It has come to my attentionthat when they get their pen-sion or grants they are paidin the new R200 notes. Whenthey use the money for pur-chases they confuse the R200with the new R20 note, which,to those with poor sight, seems similar. Only an hon-est person will point out themistake.

Our councillors and bank-ing officials should considerpaying out the elderly in de-nominations of R100, R50 andR20 to avoid the confusion.KEITH BLAKE

Big hitting at Wynberg Super SixesLIAM MOSES

IT WILL be raining boundaries in Wyn-berg this weekend when the WynbergCricket Club Super Sixes tournamenttakes place.

TheSuperSixeswill pit 12 teamsof sixplay-ers against each other in 10-over matches. Each team will have just five overs to set

a defendable score or surpass their oppo-nent’s total, and every team member, except, the wicketkeeper will bowl an over. This is the second time the tournament is

being hosted and Ebrahim-Nadeem Parker, head of youth coaching at Wynberg CC, saysthe format makes the game interesting for

purists and casual cricket watchers.“We actually found that spinners were the

most economical, even thoughyou think theyare going to get hit,” says Parker.“So you still have to play good cricket and

use proper technique, instead of just tryingto bash the ball all over the park. It’s very en-tertaining and I think everybody really en-joyed themselves.”The first instalment of the tournament took

place inMarch, but the organisers decided tomove the event forward on the cricket calen-dar as they felt December was more suitable. The Super Sixes was created by Wynberg

CC as an attempt to recreate the feel of theIPL for youths and, Parker says, all of the fan-fare of the world’s most famous short form

cricket competition can be expected.“That’s why all the teams will have their

own colours and their own logo. We sort ofliven up the atmosphere and give them a plat-form to enjoy themselves,” he says.“Fans can expect entertaining and attack-

ing cricket, as well as a lot of fun. We inter-view the captains on themicrophone just likethe IPL. They enjoy the spectacle of playingin a well organised tournament.”The inaugural tournament was won by the

Wynberg Warriors team and the championswill return to defend their crown.Other teams participating are: Primroses,

Blue Bells, Strandfontein A and B, HabsaniRoyals, Kalusta Superchargers A and B,Groote Schuur, Wynberg, Pumas, Wynberg

Warriors and St Augustines A and B.These 12 sides will be grouped into four

pools of three teams each and, after a round-robin stage, the top two teams will advanceto the knockout stages of the competition.Several prizes will be up for grabs, includ-

ing free entry to Ratanga Junction for thewinning team, a Cape Cobras jersey and asigned Highveld Lions jersey. The winningteam and individual award winners will alsotake home trophies and medals.Parker adds around 2 000 people are expect-

ed to attend the tournament, which starts at08:30 on Sunday 2 December. Entry to theground is free and children’s entertainmentwill be provided. For more information callParker on 079 525 0184.

SKW prepare for the top flightLIAM MOSES

THE management of Scotcheskloof Walm-ers RFC are bullish about their chances inthe SARU Community Cup, despite beingdrawn in one of the toughest groups in thecompetition.

SKWwere drawn inGroupA of the inaugu-ral tournament, along with Jonsson CollegeRovers (KZN), GAP Despatch (EP), VillagersWorcester (Boland) and Sishen (Griquas). But despite the quality of the opposition in

the pool the club’s director of coaching, La-beeb Levy, is positive his team is up for thechallenge.“We are in the ‘pool of death’ becausewe’ve

got the Eastern Province runners up and the

Boland, Griquas and KZN champions,” saysLevy.“But we are busy building our team and

will give it our best. At the end of the day it’s15 players against 15 players. You give peoplerespect, but you don’t have to fear them. Youjust have to prepare properly and take thegame to them. Hopefully the club can attractmore players, administrators and coaches.”The tournament, whichwill replace theNa-

tional Club Championships, will kick off onSaturday 16 February and feature the topnon-university teams in the country.Rovers are also the current National Club

Championships holders, while Despatch fin-ished second on the Grand Challenge log –just seven points behind Nelson MandelaUniversity. Villagers won the Boland Pre-

mier League by 14 points and Sishen took theGriquas Premier League by seven points.SKWare set to start training for the compe-

tition this week and will focus on strengthen-ing and bringing depth to the first teamsquad. They will need to finish first or second on

the table in order to achieve their primarygoal of advancing beyond the second roundof the competition. To achieve this, the willneed to defeat at least three of the teams inthe group.Levy admits the other participating clubs

have an edge on SKW in terms of resources, saying the club urgently needs to find a spon-sor if they are to compete at that level.“We are lacking some resources, which we

will fill soon. We need to up our resources in

all capacities – from players to facilities. That’s the shortage we need to fill else we aregoing to be in trouble,” says Levy.“We are looking for sponsors, for finance

and products. We (currently) don’t have asponsor, so we are looking for someone togive all of our players access to a gym, supple-ments and warm up equipment.”SKW qualified for the tournament as a

wildcard selection, despite finishing belowHamiltons on the Super LeagueA table. Theywill be joined by league runners-up Durban-ville-Bellville.

.Durbanville-Bellvillehavebeendrawn inGroup B, along with Pretoria Police (BlueBulls), Bloemfontein Police (Freestate),WelkomRovers (Griffons) andAfricanBomb-ers (EP).

Cape NFD derby set to enthralLIAM MOSES

SANTOS FCwill go into tomorrow’s clashwith neighbours Milano United flushwith confidence, after securing a moraleboosting victory in the National First Di-vision (NFD) over the weekend.

Santos been inconsistent this season, hav-ing lost twogamesanddrawnasmanyas theyhavewon, but the Lansdowne based club nowseem to have found their form. The People’s Team convincingly brushed

aside Witbank Spurs 4-1 at the Puma RugbyStadium on Sunday, claiming their third vic-tory of the season. However, Theo Hempe, head coach at Mi-

lano, believes his side will be more than a

match for their more illustrious opponentswhen they meet at Athlone Stadium tomor-row (Wednesday) at 19:30.“It is a derby, so whether it’s a high scoring

or low scoring game, the aim is to win. Wewant to defend as well as we can, but at theend of the days it’s just about the threepoints,” says Hempe.“We feel that we have the ammunition and

we have a lot of our players back from injury.Weare confident thatwecanpull off thevicto-ry.”Milano’s record in the competition this sea-

son reads exactly the same as their local ri-vals, with three wins, three draws and twolosses. The Grassy Park club are currently just

one place above Santos on the table in sixth

and they will also be buoyed after their per-formance at the weekend.Milano returned to winning ways on Sun-

day with a 3-1 victory over FC AK at theRooikraans Sports Complex, after losing 3-2in their last game against league leadersMpumalanga Black Aces. The defeat was Milano’s first at home this

season and Hempe blamed his side’s poor de-fensive performance for the loss.He says his teamwere much improved this

time around.“The way the players responded after our

last gamewas very positive; tt was a huge im-provement. But there is still room for im-provement, because we still gave them a softgoal,” he says.“If we defended better and pressed better

then the game would have been a lot easier.Weworked on our pressing from the front (af-ter the last game).Wedon’t justwant to blameour defenders each time. It’s everyone’s re-sponsibility. When we let in that soft goal, itjust showed us there are things we need toperfect.”The Milano coach believes the battle for

control of themidfieldwill be themost impor-tant in tomorrow’s tactical war at AthloneStadium, but concedes the derby atmospheremay have an even bigger impact.“The biggest difference is the people know

every player. It’s just much more personalthan playing teams from Johannesburg. Thefinal thing is just about the passion; the pas-sion iswhatdrivesyouand takesyou throughthe game.”

Blue Bells bowled a bouncerLIAM MOSES

THE City of Cape Town has fallen flat on itsresponsibility to the home of Blue BellsCricket Club. This according tomembers of the club, that

plays its homematches at Rooikraans SportsComplex in Grassy Park. They claim thepreparation andmaintenance of the pitch, es-sentially the responsibility of the City, hassquarely fallen on the club.Blue Bells say they have not been provided

with the bulli – a type of clay – needed to pre-pare thepitch, theoutfield isnot regularly cutand the roller they use has not been sent fora much-needed service.Chairperson Faadiel Gamieldien says it

has been difficult to grow the club andachieve performance goals because of the

challenges they face at the facility.“Our ultimate goal will be to get into the

1A League, one level before provincial crick-et. One can do that if you have the players, your development is on par and get the moti-vation from all the players and manage-ment,” says Gamieldien.“One of the support structures is your facil-

ity. The facility is most important to me, interms of getting it right.”Blue Bells currently have four senior and

11 junior teams and play in the 2B League. They have also qualified for the finals of theWestern Province Cricket AssociationAMA20 competition, whichwill be held at Sa-hara Park Newlands at the end of the season.

Gamieldien adds many players fromGrassy Park join cricket teams in other areasbecause they have better facilities.“One of your attractions will be your facili-

ty. You will find a child will say he wouldratherplayatClaremont orCapeTownCrick-et Club because of the way Rooikraanslooks,” he comments.“Unfortunately thiswill beplayerswhocan

afford to do that and we provide cricket forpeople from (poor communities.)”However, Councillor Tandeka Gqada, City

of Cape Town Mayoral Committee memberforCommunityServices, says the clubagreedto continue preparing their own pitch whenthey met with City officials in September.

“The roller is in working order and theservice period has not yet been reached. BlueBells has not been acting responsibly, in thatthey have not been storing the machine in anunacceptable store.“This contributes to the functionality of the

equipment,” she says.“The vendor for the supply of the bulli has

been reported to the City’s Supply ChainManagement (SCM) for default. Orders forthe bulli were sent on Friday 17 and Friday24 August.“SCM is yet to decide on how the vendor

will be penalised.”BlueBells also claims cricket clubs at other

facilities were receiving better service deliv-ery. Gqada’s responds: “The City is strivingto produce an equitable service throughoutthe metropole.”
