Heritage status is standing in the way ofthe possible expansion of the WaterlooRoad Mosque in Kenwyn.

Muslims have given their support to anapplication to see worshippers granted a big-ger mosque as the current facility is unableto accommodate the growing number of fol-lowers in the area.

Your SMSes. Does the City of Cape Town keep track ofstolen bins? It’s easy to report a bin stolen.Let whomever reports theft of bins, bringtheir latest municipal account and IDalong. Anyone pushing a bin on the streetmust be stopped and the binmust be confis-cated. I’m sure the City has a truck to loadsuch bins and two law enforcement officers

to carry out Operation Wheelie bin. Startit in Manenberg.

. We can protect our bins if the waste-men are on time with collection.

. Well done to the Solomons family forgetting their Constantia land back. Otherclaimants have no paperwork to base theirclaims on andmany have been paid R30 000for properties which are now worth mil-lions, but do not have the resources of law-yers. Why do the Solomons family wantgovernment to fix the soil which was de-stroyedwhen they have now got what otherfamilies can just dream about? People arenever content. Carmen

. Our dirt is only collected after 08:00 andI am at work by then. The way the bins areabused by workers is disgusting.

. On the way to the station, people arerobbed and there are lots of rats.

. Wetton station’s biggest issue, after ne-glect, is the area under Wetton bridge, which was fenced off and vagrants re-moved.But they have broken it down and are

now living there again. As far as I know,it’sMetrorail land and is for them to secure. It is where the majority of the crime is. Thestation needs to be secured with a more se-cure fence during the revamp.Wetton NHW

. I’m very relieved to hear that Wettonstation will be upgraded. I live in Wetton, but rather park my car at Kenilworth sta-tion and commute from Kenilworth as it’smuch more safer. It’s not safe with the va-grants and guys along the dark pathwayselling old items. There needs to be securitythe entire day. I look forward to this up-grade, so that I can travel from Wetton sta-tion.

MANENBERG: CAPTAIN RETIRES AFTER 30 YEARS OF DEDICATION

Top detective takes a bowCHEVON BOOYSEN

@ChevonBooysen

After investigating dozens of crimes andbringing countless culprits to book, aManenberg police detective has closed

his final case.Captain Anthony Barnes (53) recently re-

tired from the force after three decades ofservice to the crime-ridden community.Afterwalking through the doors of the sta-

tion as a fresh-faced constable in the 1980s,Barnes steadily moved up the ranks to thehead of detectives owing to his commitment

to the fight against crime.“Manenbergbecameahugepart ofmy life.

It was my second home and the staff whoworkedwithmewas at the heart of an amaz-ing team,” the Grassy Park resident says. While his workload sometimes became

unbearable, the proud cop braved the trage-dies he was assigned.“Working in this precinct had its up and

downs, but we coped well under the circum-stances. We had to deal with a lot and attimes it got quite strenuous,” Barnes ad-mits. But the community he servedmade theeffort worthwhile.

“We built a strong relationship and I willmiss them too.”With the support of his family, the father

of two proudly served the police force de-spite the dangerous circumstances he had toface. “I am sure they are relieved that I havenow decided to go for a much more relaxedenvironment as it would take them off edgeas well. My beautiful wife, daughter and sonwould wait anxiously at home for me, espe-cially during the time when gang shootingswere rife in Manenberg.”Butwhile he hasmanyhighlights and con-

victions in his 34-year career, his greatestdisappointment is never solving the case ofa six-year-old girl whowas reportedmissingalmost 10 years ago. “I headed this case andwouldhave loved to close it. Shedisappearedfrom her home and is still missing,” he says. However, Barnes has faith in the capabili-

ties of the team he leaves behind.“I feel that I have left a solid foundation

for the rest of the detective unit to build on,especially the students that were entrustedto me.”And while he no longer wears the official

blue uniform, Barnes still considers himselfa cop at heart.“My team still phones me for advice and

tips on how to deal with certain cases. I’mhappy to help and will always be there forthem,” he says.Barnes looks forward to “living a quieter

life” but will not be retiring from work justyet. “I will be going into business with mybrother. Together we are opening our ownIT company,” he boasts. But Barnes is planning to first get some

much-needed rest and relaxationasheneverenjoyed a real holiday while being a publicservant, he jokes.

HANOVER PARK: SCHOOL CLEAN-UP DRIVE

Taking prideCHEVON BOOYSEN

@ChevonBooysen

Structural changes aren’tthe only improvementstaking place at one of

Hanover Park’s oldest schools. After countless incidents of

vandalism and a threat of clo-sure, things are looking up forAthwood Primary.Kitted in overalls made of

black refuse bags, volunteersfrom the Hanover Park commu-nity on Saturday showed howteamwork and involvement canturn around a dire situation. On a blistering cold weekend,

locals braved the elements andused some elbow grease to clean up theBlomvlei Road school.Participants gave the toilets a new coat

of paint, children picked up papers, leaveswere raked and order was restored to theparking area. The clean-up comes a month before the

provincial education department startsstructural work to the building.Principal Gavin Alkana says the budget

was allocated for the fixing of windows andceilings. “The work has been tendered andthese renovations will take place from thebeginning of June. This is whywe have opt-ed to get the community involved in thesmaller renovations,” he says.Arranged by the Hanover Park Civic As-

sociation, parents as well as pupils cameout in their numbers to take part in givingthe school a much-needed facelift.Campaign organiser Igshaan Nazier

worked tirelessly for two months to see theinitiative take shape.“We had great support from the commu-

nity and subsequently three more schoolsin the area have called as they want the

same thing to be done for them,” he says.Hanover Park Civic Association chair-

person Errol Davids also attended the firstleg of the clean up. “We look forward to therest of the campaign so that we can get theschool clean. The restrooms at the schoolhad a terrible stench and that is in no wayhygienic for any child. We’re just glad wecan contribute tomaking this a better placein which to learn,” Davids says. The school was sponsored 10 buckets of

paint byMarmoran and the refurbishing ofthe ceilings will be done by LansdowneBoards.Alkana feels that this campaignwill have

a two-fold effect.“This campaign will definitely bring our

community closer together and, in the samebreath, wewill enjoy a cleaner and safer en-vironment. We just want the community totake responsibility for the schools in theirarea. By doing this, we will decrease the in-cidents of vandalism.”To donate to the campaign, contact Ig-

shaan Nazier on 083 555 3799.V For more photos, vist www.peoplespost.co.za.
