Hymn: TiS 125
1. The God of Abraham praise
who reigns enthroned above,
ancient of everlasting days,
and God of love:
the Lord, the great I AM
by earth and heaven confessed!
We bow and bless the sacred name
for ever blessed.
2. The God of Abraham praise,
whose all-sufficient grace
shall guide us all our happy days
in all our ways.
He calls us each a friend,
he calls himself our God;
and he shall save us to the end
through Jesus’ blood.
3. He by himself has sworn,
we on his oath depend:
we shall, on eagles’ wings upborne,
to heaven ascend:
we shall behold his face,
we shall his power adore,
and sing the wonders of his grace
for evermore.
6. The whole triumphant host
gives thanks to God on high:
‘Hail, Father, Son and Spirit blest!’
they ever cry.
Hail, Abraham’s God and ours!
with heaven our songs we raise:
all might and majesty are yours,
and endless praise.
3
Greeting: The Lord be with you.
AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)
Sentence: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all
your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first
commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as
yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Matthew 22.37-40
Prayer of Preparation:
As we gather as God's people let us pray together:
Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration
of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Summary of the Commandments:
‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the
Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your
mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first
commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as
yourself.’
4
Kyrie eleison (Dudman)
The Confession
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's
forgiveness.
Merciful God, our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
and in what we have failed to do:
we have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us.
Strengthen us to love and obey you
in newness of life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Absolution {Celebrant}
Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him
in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen
you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.
5
Gloria
6
Prayer of the Day
O God,
whose Son has taught us that love is the fulfilment of your law:
stir up within us the fire of your Holy Spirit,
and pour into our hearts your greatest gift of love,
so that we may love you with our whole being,
and our neighbours as ourselves;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)
First Reading: Deuteronomy 34:1-12
34:1 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the
top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him the
whole land: Gilead as far as Dan, 2 all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and
Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, 3 the Negeb,
and the Plain--that is, the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees--as far as
Zoar. 4 The Lord said to him, "This is the land of which I swore to
Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, 'I will give it to your descendants';
I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there." 5
Then Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at
the Lord's command. 6 He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab,
opposite Beth-peor, but no one knows his burial place to this day. 7
Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his sight was
unimpaired and his vigor had not abated. 8 The Israelites wept for Moses
in the plains of Moab thirty days; then the period of mourning for Moses
was ended.
9 Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had
laid his hands on him; and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the Lord
had commanded Moses.
7
10 Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom
the Lord knew face to face. 11 He was unequaled for all the signs and
wonders that the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against
Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, 12 and for all the mighty
deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the
sight of all Israel.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD
Psalm: 90:1-2, 14-17
1 Lord, you have been our refuge:
from one generation to another.
2 Before the mountains were born or the earth and the world were
brought to be:
from eternity to eternity you are God.
14 O satisfy us early with your mercy:
that all our days we may rejoice and sing.
15 Give us joy for all the days you have afflicted us:
for the years we have suffered adversity.
16 Show your servants your work:
and let their children see your glory.
17 May the gracious favour of the Lord our God be upon us:
prosper the work of our hands, O prosper the work of our hands!
8
Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-13
2:1 You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was
not in vain, 2 but though we had already suffered and been shamefully
mistreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare
to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. 3 For our appeal
does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, 4 but just as we
have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the
gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who
tests our hearts. 5 As you know and as God is our witness, we never came
with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; 6 nor did we seek praise
from mortals, whether from you or from others, 7 though we might have
made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like
a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. 8 So deeply do we care for
you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God
but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.
9 You remember our labor and toil, brothers and sisters; we worked
night and day, so that we might not burden any of you while we
proclaimed to you the gospel of God. 10 You are witnesses, and God also,
how pure, upright, and blameless our conduct was toward you believers.
11 As you know, we dealt with each one of you like a father with his
children, 12 urging and encouraging you and pleading that you lead a life
worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
13 We also constantly give thanks to God for this, that when you
received the word of God that you heard from us, you accepted it not as a
human word but as what it really is, God's word, which is also at work in
you believers.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 47
1. Our God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come,
our shelter from the stormy blast,
and our eternal home:
2. under the shadow of your
throne
your saints have dwelt secure:
sufficient is your arm alone,
and our defence is sure.
3. Before the hills in order stood,
or earth received its frame,
from everlasting you are God
to endless years the same.
5. Time, like an ever-rolling
stream,
bears all of us away;
we fly forgotten, as a dream
dies at the opening day.
6. Our God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come,
remain our guard while troubles
last,
and our eternal home.
10
We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet
our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.
The Lord be with you
AND ALSO WITH YOU
The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Matthew chapter 22
beginning at the 34th
verse.
GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.
34 When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they
gathered together, 35 and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to
test him. 36 "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?"
37 He said to him, " 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' 38 This is the greatest and
first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: 'You shall love your
neighbor as yourself.' 40 On these two commandments hang all the law
and the prophets."
41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them
this question: 42 "What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?"
They said to him, "The son of David." 43 He said to them, "How is it then
that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying,
44 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I put your
enemies under your feet" '?
45 If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?" 46 No one was
able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him
any more questions.
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,
PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

THE NICENE CREED
Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.
We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge
the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Offertory Hymn: TiS 275
1. Hail to the Lord’s anointed,
great David’s greater Son;
hail, in the time appointed,
his reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
to let the captive free,
and take away transgression,
and rule in equity.
2. He comes with help and mercy
to those who suffer wrong,
to raise the poor and needy,
and bid the weak be strong,
to give them songs for sighing,
their darkness turn to light,
whose souls condemned and dying
were precious in his sight.
3. He shall come down like showers
upon the fruitful earth,
and love, joy, hope, like flowers,
spring in his path to birth;
before him on the mountains
shall peace the herald go,
and righteousness in fountains
from hill to valley flow.
4. Kings shall fall down before
him,
and gold and incense bring;
all nations shall adore him,
his praise all people sing;
to him shall prayer unceasing
and daily vows ascend;
his kingdom still increasing,
a kingdom without end.
cont’d….
14
5. O’er every foe victorious,
he on his throne shall rest,
from age to age more glorious,
all blessing and all-blest.
The tide of time shall never
his covenant remove;
his name shall stand for ever,
that name to us is love.
Offertory Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through
your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for
your glory and for the service of your kingdom.
BLESSED BE GOD FOR EVER.

Lift up your heart,...
