B. Professional Information: The course aim and intended learning outcomes are based on that mentioned in the program specifications, with more course-related specific details.

1. Overall Aims of Course

The aim of this course is to insure that the students have the necessary knowledge about the scope of pharmacognosy, certain definitions related to medicinal plants, origin of drugs, cultivation of medicinal plants, the external and internal factors affecting their growth and their active constituent content, treatment and handling plant drugs from their collection to be ready for medicinal use, a brief information about the types of active constituents and detection of adulteration of natural drugs, a deep knowledge of morphology, histology of the leaf drugs, their active constituents, medicinal effect, side effect and contra-indications of their use.

2. Intended Learning Outcomes of Course (ILOs)

a. Knowledge and Understanding:

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

a1. Recognize the natural and geographical origin of crude drugs (official and unofficial).

a2. Discus the external and internal factors affecting plant growth, collection and drying of crude drugs.

a3. Describe the ideal methods for packing, storage and preservation of drugs and precautions used to prevent their deterioration.

a4. Report the different types of active constituents present in natural drugs and recognize their chemical nature.

a5. Explain the different types of adulteration of drugs and detect adulterants.

a6. Describe the macro and micro-morphological characters of leaf drugs, their uses, side effects and contra-indications, as well as, the use of thallophytae including algae, fungi and lichens.

b- Intellectual Skills:

By the end of this course the student should be able to:

b1. Demonstrate the different types of adulteration of crude drugs.

b2- Apply the methods of cultivation, collection, drying, packing, storage and preservation of drugs.

b3- Examine drugs and test their active constituents. Tutorial / practical hours.

By the end of this course the student should be able to:

c1. Demonstrate different morphological and histological features of leaves.

Overall Aims of Course After completion of the course the student should have the knowledge and skills that enable her /him to recognize and identify of flowers, barks, woods, gall and unorganized drugs in entire and powdered forms. They also should recognize the principles of quality control of these drugs including adulteration and other contaminations.

2. Intended Learning Outcomes of Course (ILOs) a- Knowledge and Understanding: After the end of the course, the students should be able to: a1- Identify the origin and different key elements of flowers , barks , woods and unorganized drugs.

b2- Apply the study to differentiate between genuine and adulterated drugs made of , flower , bark , wood , and unorganized drugs .

1. Overall Aims of Course The aim of the course is to Pharmacognostical study of the seed, fruit, herb, and subterranean crude drugs.

The study includes detailed macro and micro morphological study of some official crude drugs composed of seeds fruits, herbs and subterranean organs, their constituents, therapeutic uses, as well as test used for their identification.

Also the course is including some drugs recently prescribed in modern phyto-therapeutic formulation (Non Official).

a1- Record the pharmacological actions, uses and side effects of the drugs composed of seeds, fruits and herbs.

a2- Describe the morphology and histology of the drugs composed of seeds, fruits and herbs, in entire state and in powdered form.

a3-Identify crude drugs of seed, fruits or herbs.

b- Intellectual Skills By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

b1- Recognize some drugs recently prescribed in modernphototherapeutic formulations.

c- Professional and Practical Skills By the end of the course, the student should be able to:

c1- Sketch the elements of diagnostic characters of the powder of seeds, fruits, herbs and subterranean organs.

c2- Use microscope to identify histology of the drugs composed of seeds, fruits and herbs in entire state and in powdered form.

c3- Schedules scheme for description of the plant organs consists of seeds, fruits , herbs and underground as well as scheme of description of the plants in powdered form.

1. Overall Aims of Course

The aim of the course is to ensure that the students have the necessary knowledgeabout Chromatography and separation techniques: Adsorption chromatography,partition chromatography, paper chromatography, thin layer chromatography, gelchromatography and ion exchange chromatography. Also, the advanced types andtheir applications: High pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas liquidchromatography (GC). Students have laboratory activities for these types ofchromatography.

a3- Recall important information about principles of various instruments as HPLC andGC for the analysis of pharmaceutical compounds.

b- Intellectual SkillsBy the end of this course, Students should be able to:

b1. Use column chromatography and TLC technique for the identification and separationof a given compound as well as mixture of compounds as well as selecting and thesuitable HPLC method for analysis of a given compound.

b2. Compare different methods of isolation and identification.

c- Professional and Practical Skills:By the end of this course, Students should be able to:

c1- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the physico-chemical parameters thatinfluence compound retention in chromatography and how these properties can be used todevelop separation of compound mixtures.

c2- Demonstrate a fundamental and advanced understanding of the different types ofchromatography that are available and be able to review which is the best technique toseparate compounds based on molecular structure and sample substrate.

c3- Operate different pharmaceutical instrumentations and laboratory procedures andapply different chromatographic tools as column, TLC plate, and HPLC instrument forthe separation, identification and analysis of a given compound as well as mixture ofcompounds.
