But why do they smell?Dogs may naturally produce a small amount of odor from their skin, mouth, ears, paws and scent glands at the rear end, but sometimes the smell is excessive.

When a dog stinks, the smell comes from surface skin oils that have become rancid due to normal skin bacteria and yeast feeding on them. Also, dogs seem to find some repulsive things quite attractive and will seek them out and roll in them.Warm, humid conditions create a more inviting environment on the skin for bacterial and fungal growth, hence increasing the need for bathing.

Breeds such as the Samoyed and Malamute have thick double coats adapted to cold climates and do not cope well in high temperature or tropical areas. To ensure that your

dog is being provided with the right care for their coat, your Pooch Mobile Operator can assist you with caring for your pet’s skin ailments or irritations, and has a great range of natural shampoos designed especially for your dogs needs.

During the Spring and Summer months when our dogs spend more time outdoors, they are more likely to run into or chase the occasional skunk. The smell of skunk is extremely hard to remove from anything, let alone your dog and there

are many ‘homemade’ remedies we have heard of and tried over the years. Unfortunately

they have proven unsuccessful. The Pooch Mobile has a specially formulated Skunk shampoo for effectively removing the skunk smell – not just mask it. Additional charges do apply for a skunk wash.

But the secret to keeping that ‘doggie smell’ away is to have your dog Hydrobathed on a regular basis. Did you know that the majority of Pooch Mobile customers have their dogs washed every 4 - 2 weeks?

Our guarantee – your dog clean, flea free and smelling great, or it’s FRee!

With temperatures rising and holidays on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to take a family trip, and that often means taking your dog with you. If you do choose to travel with your dog it’s important to be aware of how it can affect him as while excitement will usually be top of the list, some dogs may feel stressed and frightened. Tips below help ensure a pooch perfect trip.

Get your dog used to being in your car prior to the trip. This will determine if he has problems with motion sickness or •exhibits excessive excitability that may require treatment.

Take him for a long walk before you leave on your trip.•

Keep your dog on a normal feeding schedule as much as possible.•

Pack a leash and make sure your dog is wearing a properly fitted collar and ID tag to enable walks at each •pet stop you make.

Take their identification, medication and a current photo in case you are separated.•

Never ever• leave your dog alone in a car. Extreme temperatures (even if a window is left partially open) can be fatal in just a matter of minutes.

Always take your dog’s regular food and plenty of water on the trip. While you may like to snack along the way, junk •and snack food isn’t healthy for dogs.

If you are travelling by plane, you can make special arrangements for your dog to also be transported – remember to •make arrangements with the airline well in advance.

AVOID HEAT STROKEHeat Stroke is a very serious life-threatening disease that can affect dogs rapidly. Dark-colored dogs are particularly prone to heat stroke due to their dark coat absorbing heat. Other medical factors that predispose your dog to heat stroke are obesity, laryngeal paralysis and heart disease. Some common early signs of heat stroke include panting, excessive salivation, hyper-excitement and increased rectal temperature. Heat stroke can affect every organ in the body. If you suspect that this is taking place, seek immediate veterinary attention for your pet.

The largest dog on record is a 343 lbs English Mastiff named Zobra, the •smallest dog was a Yorkshire Terrier who weighed just 4 ounces.

There are an estimated 400 million dogs in the world.•

An average dog lives 8 – 15 years.•

If someone in your household is allergic to dogs, bathe your dog every •week as he will shed less dry hair.

Brush your dog 3 times a week in the spring and you’ll have a summer •free from shedding.

Helping Your Dog Survive

Thunderstorms or Fireworks

If your dog finds a place •they feel safe, ie. Under a bed, leave him there.

Putting a blanket, towel •or coat over him may have a calming effect

Mask the noise with an •air conditioner, vacuum cleaner or your favorite music.

Music can calm your dog •– classical is best.

Talk with your vet for •medications that may calm your dog.

DOGGIe tIPS

Make the most of the outdoors this Spring & Summer with your dog. During the Winter months we spend so much time indoors, so grab the kids and the dogs and spend some quality time outdoors, away from the television, video games and computers and soak up the warmth of the Summer sun.

Live Near the Mountains?• Take everyone to the mountains for a day of hiking and exploring – the mountains are a great place to spend summer days as the temperature is usually cooler in the mountains than the city.

Doggie Events• – Check your local newspapers for events in your community. During the warmer months you will find many events put on by local organizations, businesses and animal shelters which you can attend with your dogs.

Dog Parks• – Our dogs just love getting out and socializing with other dogs at doggie parks, and if your dog loves water, check out parks with lakes so your dog can keep cool while getting exercise.

Markets• – Combine your dog’s morning walk with a trip to the markets.

The Right Route• – Even younger dogs, with their infinite energy, can have trouble keeping up when it’s hot. If during the walk, your dog continually seeks out shade to lie down in or just refuses to go any further, and then you will need to take a break and adjust the distance of your daily walks.

Cause for Paws• – When the temperature is very high, don’t let your dog stand on hot roads or concrete as his body can heat up quickly and sensitive paw pads can burn. Look for alternative surfaces such as cool grass.

Water Wise• – Hot temperatures can cause dehydration in dogs extremely quickly, so be prepared. Keep a cool bottle of water on hand when out walking your dog during the summer and offer the water to your dog at regular intervals, even if he seems uninterested.

Make Adoption Your First ChoiceWe’ve all heard the news during 2009 of the thousands of Americans losing their jobs and homes due to the economic downturn. Unfortunately, along with people losing their homes, their innocent pets have also suffered losing not only their homes, but in many cases, their families.

The sad reality is many people have had to surrender their beloved family pets to shelters as they are no longer financially able to care for them. The shelters are struggling to house and care for all these pets as their donations, for which they so strongly depend on, have also declined.

The Pooch Mobile supports making adoption your first choice and giving a dog a new forever home. If you have been considering adding another dog to your family, now is a great time to take a trip to your local animal shelter.

What about fostering a homeless Pet in 2010? Fostering gives many people the opportunity to discover if they are a match to adopt a particular pet or well suited to have an animal in their lives at all.

While fostering is not for everyone, you can do nothing more meaningful or valuable for an animal.

You may not be able to save the world, but to the animal you just saved, you are the world!

The answer is YES!The pet industry is referred to as the “Recession Resistant’ industry.

The demand for The Pooch Mobile services continued to grow through the 2009 recession, so we are looking for more dog lovers to join The Pooch Mobile Team.

The Pooch Mobile Dog Wash Franchise washes more than 25,000 dogs each and every month.
