However the winter can affect our dogs just as much as it can affect us, especially on those cold and dreary days when the outdoors is less than inviting for walks and playtime. Along with the beauty winter brings, winter can also be a dangerous time for our dogs, but if you take a few precautions you and your dog will have a safe, healthy and fun filled winter season. Coat Care With a dog’s thicker winter coat comes the increased need for grooming and a coat that is well cared for is essential. Removal of loose hair and matts means your dog will be able to maintain a warm body temperature, whereas a dirty matted coat has no insulation properties. Did you know? The air between hairs is called “loft” creates insulation against extreme elements. The best way to maintain that loft is to keep your dog’s coat clean, mat free and well brushed. Proper coat maintenance can be achieved by regular brushing and bathing. It is recommended that dogs be washed every 2 – 4 weeks to keep their coat in top condition. When it is very cold shorthaired dogs and those with coarse fine coats or those that have had their hair clipped during the summer months can feel the cold more…so you may consider purchasing a special dog coat to keep him warm. Allergies Dogs with indoor allergies such as those allergic to dust mites, insects and other allergens within your home may become worse in the winter as they spend more time indoors. Dogs may manifest these allergies by scratching or developing skin and ear infections that need to be treated by your vet. Medicated shampoos and other treatments can alleviate some itching while also helping to treat infections. Supplements rich in Omega 3 fatty acids may also help to maintain a dog’s healthy skin. Humidifiers can be especially helpful in homes with ducted or fan forced heaters that tend to be especially drying to a dog’s skin. Talk with your Pooch Mobile operator today about the unique range of Pooch Mobile dog shampoos. Pooch Mobile shampoos are soap free, hypoallergenic and PH balanced for dog’s skin. Canine Cough Canine cough is the most common infectious condition in dogs. It is caused by a highly contagious respiratory infection officially known as Bordetella Bronchiseptica and is often also caused by a virus called Canine Para-influenza. It can be best compared to the human version of a cold and is more prevalent in winter when it’s cold and immunities are at a low. As the Canine cough is an airborne disease, it can be caught from contact with other dogs or even from a dog which has canine cough living up to 2 miles away. However there is a vaccine that can be administered by your vet that helps reduce (not prevent) symptoms by up to 80%. The good news is that a dog will build up his own immunity to Bordetella and Para-influenza after the first instance. It is very rare for dogs to get a second bout of either for the remainder of his life. Ponds and Lakes Do not let your dog off leash around frozen ponds or lakes, keep them on their leashes at all times. Each year we hear those very sad news stories of dogs drowning in frozen ponds as they were chasing another animal or simply playing and are unaware of the dangers. Keep your dog safe and avoid panic situations if you can. Heating If you have a fireplace or use a space heater, remember that your dog may try to snuggle up to the heat and accidentally singe their fur. Keep an eye out to make sure their tails, whiskers, or fur do not come into contact with the flames, coils, or other hot surfaces. Ice Melt When dogs go outside they can pick up rock salt, ice, and chemical ice melt in the pads of their feet. Wipe their feet and check their legs and belly to ensure it is ice and chemical free. Dry them off when they come inside. They will quickly get used to this routine and it will also keep your house cleaner. Senior Pets Senior pets need some extra TLC during the cold weather days. Their joints may become super sensitive and tender. Eliminate as many stairs as possible in your home or walk behind them when they climb stairs or hills in case they slip. Keep their bedding in a warm, draft free area. Nutrition In winter, be sure to feed your pooch a nutritious diet consisting of good quality dog food and supplements as their bodies use more energy to regulate body temperature during the cold months. Many pet parents are choosing a grain-free dog food. Active Balance A dog should stay active during the winter or he may become bored and destructive when left at home. If it’s too cold or wet outside, set up some activities that your dog can do indoors so he can stay entertained. Chews and toys are great for keeping dogs busy. But remember, a good balance of exercise, a warm bed and rest is the answer.

Winter can be such a beautiful time of year and a fun time to spend with the entire family, both indoors and out. However the winter can affect our dogs

just as much as it can affect us, especially on those cold and dreary days when the outdoors is less than inviting for walks and playtime.

Along with the beauty winter brings, winter can also be a dangerous time for our dogs, but if you take a few precautions you and your dog will have a safe, healthy and fun filled winter season.

Coat CareWith a dog’s thicker winter coat comes the increased need for grooming and a coat that is well cared for is essential.

AllergiesDogs with indoor allergies such as those allergic to dust mites, insects and other allergens within your home may become worse in the winter as they spend more time indoors.

Ear infections are a common problem especially with longer haired breeds, but all dogs can get ear infections.

DietDiet can play a big part in reoccurring problems such as ear infections. Many dog owners have found switching their dog to a grain-free dog food has helped reduce or even eliminate ear infections completely.

SeedsCountry dogs often get grass seeds down the ears, causing a head standing, mind-bursting tickle. The onset is sudden and the vet should be seen as soon as possible; grass seeds left down the ear can cause long-term chronic ear problems.

MitesEspecially with dogs that sleep in close proximity to cats, ear mites can be a problem. Invisible to the naked eye, these creepy-crawlies, often buried in wax, cause a tickle by doing a dance down the ear canal.

Hemorrhage In The EarflapThis causes the ear to swell up like a balloon, and usually only occurs in older dogs who have some chronic ear trouble. Plagued by a bad ear, they shake their heads a lot, rupturing one of the ear’s tiny blood vessels. Surgery is usually needed in such a case.

Local Allergic ReactionSometimes the bare underside of the earflap becomes irritated by something in the environment such as grasses and goes red

and hot. The dog shakes his head because of the irritation and may start trouble further down the ear.

Signs Of Ear ProblemsHead shaking, rubbing the ear along the ground or scratching it are usually the first signs of ear problems in a dog. The more chronic case will hold its head to one side or hold the ear flattened against the head. Any bad smell coming from the ear spells trouble. Also, any yellow discharge should be regarded very seriously and requires an immediate visit to the vet. Remember though in some bad ear cases there are no early signs so you must always do a regular check.

Putting In Ear DropsHold the ear up vertically by the tip, this opens up the canal. Squeeze the drops into the ear. Next, massage the base of the ear where you will hear a squelching sound, indicating the drops have collected in the right place. Then let go of the ear and stand back – you may want to consider putting

drops in ears outdoors.

The Pooch Mobile uses and recommends Nzymes Ox-E-Drops for ear infections. Ox-E-Drops are very safe and easy to use. Ask your Pooch Mobile operator today about Nzymes products for your dog’s best wellbeing.

More and more people are turning to alternative medicine to cure their aliments, and they’re doing the same for their dogs.

Almost every alternative therapy used to treat humans can also be used on dogs. Often, dog lovers experiment with alternative therapies to find gentle treatments for conditions such as pain, especially in senior dogs. Acupuncture, chiropractic, aromatherapy and massage are all used to ease pain.

AcupunctureAcupuncture and Chinese Medicine Acupuncture uses very fine needles placed into the body at specific points to promote healing. It has been used for 4,000 years and its popularity and use are increasing. There are a growing number of trained professionals offering acupuncture to dogs. It also complements traditional medicine very well. Most dogs undergoing acupuncture become very relaxed and often fall asleep due to the relief it can bring.

ChiropracticThis alternate therapy works on the fact that misalignments in the spine can affect how the body functions. The aim is to gently adjust the spine to stimulate healing by taking pressure off nerves leaving and entering the spine. This must be done by a professional trained in veterinary chiropractic’s. Senior dogs can really benefit from a chiropractic visit.

Is my dog a service dog? Many customers have asked us over the years if their dogs qualify as a service dog and where can they purchase a service dog vest. The Pooch Mobile is a huge supporter of service dogs and their owners that depend on them for simple everyday chores to life saving tasks, however just because you like to take your dog everywhere with you or you feel more comfortable when he is at your side, that doesn’t make him a service dog in the eyes of the law.

“Service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Examples of such work or tasks include guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling a wheelchair, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, reminding a person with mental illness to take prescribed medications, calming a person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during an anxiety attack, or performing other duties. Service animals are working animals, not pets. The work or task a dog has been trained to provide must be directly related to the person’s disability. Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA. This definition does not affect or limit the broader definition of “assistance animal” under the Fair Housing Act or the broader definition of “service animal” under the Air Carrier Access Act. Some State and local laws also define service animal more broadly than the ADA does. Information about such laws can be obtained from the State attorney General’s office.”

If you put a vest on your dog who is not a Service Dog by law, you are in violation of Federal Law. If you are reported to the authorities and they investigate to find that indeed your dog is not a Service Dog, it’s going to cost you some jail time and/or large fines. The Federal Government does not smile favorably on fakers. If you are caught, you will be treated like a criminal. If you are convicted, you are on Federal record, a criminal.
