“A BULL, A JUBILEE, AND AN
ENCYCLICAL WALK INTO A BAR . . .” Not really. . . but an explanation of these terms
which have appeared in our Catholic news this year
might be helpful! In April, Pope Francis issued Mis-
ericordiae Vultus: Bull of Indiction on the Extraordi-
nary Jubilee of Mercy, announcing the year of mercy
which will begin in December. In June, he issued the
encyclical Laudato Si!: On Care for Our Common
Home. What is the difference between a bull and an
encyclical? What’s a jubilee?
In last week’s bulletin, we highlighted the
BULL. This week, we consider the ENCLYCLI-
CAL. Taken from the Greek work for “circular,” en-
cyclicals are documents addressed by the Pope to the
bishops of the Church or the general faithful (and
sometimes to all persons of good will) to convey
timely teachings on matters of faith and morals. En-
cyclicals are usually written in the Latin language,
and the title of the encyclical is usually taken from
its first few words (itsincipit), e.g., Laudato Si! be-
gins, “Laudato Si, mi Signore” (Praise be to you, my
Lord).
Ubi primum is an 1849 encyclical of Pope Pi-
us IX to the bishops of the Catholic Church asking
them for opinion on the definition of a dogma on
the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary It was
issued on February 2, 1849. The positive response
to Ubi primum led to the 1854 bull Ineffabilis Deus,
which defined the dogma of the Immaculate Concep-
tion.
Next week: What is a jubilee?

us at 1:00 this Tuesday, in the Smith Building!
The Archdiocese of Cincinnati’s Food
For All: Be Multiplied campaign is an
effort inspired by Pope Francis’ call to
action to end hunger by 2025 and in
conjunction with his visit to the United
States in September. Food For All will
be the collective archdiocesan “Spiritual Bouquet” for
Pope Francis. The archdiocese is organizing advocacy to
protect Child Nutrition programs in the federal budget this
year before the Holy Father addresses Congress. Just as
Jesus fed the 5,000, we want our efforts to feed people who
are hungry, especially school children who depend on
breakfast and lunch to get them through the day. Parishes
and other organizations are asked to “multiply” the loaves
and fishes by pledging to collect 5000 letters to Congress
advocating for protection of the Child Nutrition Programs.
Archbishop Schnurr will bless the letters on September 14,
before they are hand-carried to local congressional offices,
and he will send a letter to the papal nuncio informing the
Holy Father of our efforts. What a wonderful gift to the
Holy Father as he continues to reach out to the poorest
among us!
After the Masses on Aug. 15-16, St. Helen parishioners
will have the opportunity to sign letters to Senator Brown,
Senator Portman, and Representative Turner (or Speaker
Boehner). We hope everyone will take a few minutes to
advocate for programs that affect the well-being of chil-
dren. Then stay tuned for Part Two of the spiritual bouquet
– a pledge to collect one million items of food during 2015
-16!

ST. HELEN GUIDE BOOK &
DIRECTORY ADVERTISING We are in the process of updating our annual
Guide Book & Directory for the church. This book will
be the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How of our
Congregation. The book is being provided at no cost to
our Church, including the mailing to each family, and
again is being subsidized by local businesses that adver-
tise in it. If you own or manage a business and would
like to find out about advertising in our book, please call
the Church Office.
Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing
show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a
Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-
advertiser. It “will pay” to advertise in our new Guide
Book & Directory.
