The Bonsai Tree

Interior Perspectives

The bonsai is sculpted by human intervention and is often viewed as an art form and symbol of harmony and balance. These beliefs developed the inspiration for Pass the Baton’s design concept. The sculptural essence of the bonsai can be seen in the half-spiral staircase and custom display components. The circulation path and ceiling accents relate to the radial symetry of a well sculpted bonsai. Textural interest in the space comes from the natural limestone walls and wood finishes.

The nurturing put into the care of the bonsai over a long period of time is a parallel to the items sold in the store, as they were once deeply cared for by

their previous owners.

Since TOMS employees are constantly thinking of new products and researching new places to give back, their work environment

must be as unique and dynamic as they are.

ConceptThe Apophylite Crystal is representative of universal love and perfection, it is frequently referred to as the stone of truth, and is believed to release negative thought patterns. These beliefs relate to TOMS business model that continuously gives back to the community, its employees, and essentially the world.

As a living mineral the Apopholyte crystal is composed of three-dimensional patterns, semi-transparent faces, and given the correct environment can grow in-definitely. These three elements have inspired me to use design solutions that are as unique as TOMS. The Resolve work-stations and heavily textured materials relate to the crystalline structure of the Apophylite. The natural light within the space has been kept as unobstructed as possible and the added artificial light will be fluidly diffused throughout the space via custome lighting fixtures. The major conference areas are going to me mostly comprised of textured glass for privacy and optimal light penetration.
