SO why does architecture of todays age not make the hospital a place for enjoyment and g r o w t h ? ”

The ineffi ciencies of Cayman healthcare facilities cause additional stress on patients, unfortu-nately hindering patient recovery and in some cases causing fatalities. The identifi cation included r e se a r ch a n d d i sco v e r y i n a r e a s o f p a t i e n t m o v e m e n t Eco n o m y a n d o t h e r s. Af t e r t h i s a f e a si -bility study would have been conducted but as this was a thesis project this step was not ad-d r e sse d . The fi nal decision in site was Two parcels of land separated by a main road with one being over t h e w a t e r .

I st a r t e d w i t h t h e C i r cu l a t i o n s o f sp a ce s a n d w h i ch space needed to be adjacent to the other. The next was fi guring out which space required v i e w s, n a t u r a l l i g h t i n g a n d n o l i g h t i n g . M y n e x t st e p w a s t a k i n g se v e r a l t y p i ca l ca se s I e a p e r so n co m i n g f o r a n e m e r g e n cy , d o ct o r co m i n g h o m e a n d g e n e r a l i m a g i n g t h e n se e i n g what fl oor would be appropriate. I discover that other layouts had people making excessive m o v e m e n t s w i t h o u t a d i r e ct r e a so n w h i ch , l e a d t o h i g h e r e q u i p m e n t u sa g e a d d i n g t o u t i l i t y cost. My solution was deriving a chart which modifi ed the fl oor some areas was located.

Project Description:

This project was very simple but most interesting for me. As I got the chance to w o r k a s a l a b o r e r a f t e r d e si g n i n g a n d su b m i t t i n g t h e p l a n s f o r a p p r o v a l . I t w a s n o t u n t i l t h e f o u n d a t i o n w a s co m p l e t e t h a t t h e o t h e r w o r k e r s f o u n d o u t i w a s t h e “ Ar ch i t e ct ” o n t h e si t e . Th o t h e w o r d a r ch i t e ct i s f o r a l i ce n se d i n d i v i d u a l t h e o t h e r w o r k e r s showed great respect as i Came out of office and mixed concrete after designing the structure. I understood safe of the design flaws i had. and the way a con-st r u ct i o n d o cu m e n t i s se t o u t co u l d ca u se co n f u s i o n . S e e i n g t h e w a y y o u r d e t a i l s i s co n st r u ct e d i s a n e x p e r i e n ce i w o u l d n e v e r f o r g e t .

A major issue with designing home on island is Hurricane conditions and cost of u t i l i t i e s so t h e p r i m a r y b u i l d i n g m a t e r i a l ch o se n w a s I n su l t e d co n cr e t e f o r m . Th e ch a l l e n g e i n u si n g t h e m a t e r i a l i s t h e w i d t h o f i t i s 1 2 i n ch e s v s t h e r e g u l a r 6 i n ch u se d i n r e g u l a r b l o ck co n st r u ct i o n f o r a si n g l e st o r y r e si d e n ce .The home was completed with the use of low-e windows sized to meet the e g r e ss r e q u i r e m e n t s, w h i l e m a i n t a i n i n g a sca l e d p r o p o r t i o n f o r g e n e r a l a p p e a r -a n ce . Th e o v e r a l l e n e r g y sa v i n g f o r t h e h o m e i s e x p e ct e d t o b e 3 0 % o v e r r e g u l a r co n st r u ct i o n .

The home was spec’d and designed to meet the standard building code with a m e n d m e n t s f o r ca t e g o r y 5 h u r r i ca n e , N a t i o n a l El e ct r i c co d e , N a t i o n a l M e ch a n -i ca l C o d e a n d n a t i o n a l p l u m b i n g co d e .
