Toshiba Medical welcomes you to attend our annual International Imaging Symposium 2017 on June 9-10th. CT and MR will have the spotlight at this year’s event in celebration of 10 Years of Area Detector CT medical imaging, in addition to our advancements in MR technologies.

This comprehensive 2-day program will explore a wide range of clinical topics from Abdominal Assessment to MSK to Vascular disease from the perspective of radiologists, technologists and physicists. A faculty of renowned guest speakers from North America and around the world will be sharing the latest advances and techniques in both modalities.

Keynote Speakers

Dr. Patrik Rogalla - University Health Network, Toronto, Canada

Dr. Patrik Rogalla completed his medical studies as well as his radiology residency at the Free University of Berlin in Germany. After having completed a Clinical fellowship in gastro-intestinal imaging at the University of California UCSF in the United States, he returned to Germany where he began working at Charité University Hospital. There, he progressively held roles which eventually led him to his appointment as Professor of Radiology. In July 2009, Dr. Rogalla was appointed as Full Professor of Radiology at the University of Toronto and has in July 2010 been appointed as Head of the Abdominal Imaging Division. He is the Director of Computed Tomography at JDMI and assumed the role as Site Director at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Dr. Rogalla has published more than 165 original articles, several book chapters, and is holding two international patents; is actively involved in many professional and radiological societies. In 2006, he contributed towards the development of federal guidelines and quality criteria for virtual CT colonography. His areas of focus include interventional CT, cardiac CT, gastro-intestinal imaging, perfusion imaging, reconstruction and post-processing techniques.

Dr. Bruno Morin - University of Montreal, Montreal, Canada

Dr. Bruno Morin is a Radiologist at the University of Montreal, and Head of Medical Imaging Department at the City of Health of Laval. He received his Medical Doctorate from The University of Laval in 1991 and the Graduate Diploma in Radiology from the University of Montreal in 1996. He also serves as Treasurer and Head of the Scientific Committee of the Simulation Centre, Society of Radiologists in Quebec.

Guy Poloni - Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation, Otawara, Japan

Guy Poloni, PhD, received his Doctorate Degrees in Physics from the University of Milan in 2005. Coming from a Theoretical Physics background, he was engaged in clinical research in Italy from 2005 to 2009 and then at the Buffalo Neuroimaging Analysis Center from 2009 to 2011. His research activities focused on Neurodegenerative Disorders which includes Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson Disease, Alzheimer Disease, and Lafora Disease, as well as Anorexia Nervosa, Major Depression Disorder, Brain Cancer, Prostate and Liver and Glico Enosis of Type II. Guy joined Toshiba America Medical Systems in 2011 and currently serves as Director of Global MRI Clinical Research at Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation to oversee global clinical research initiatives.

Dr. Tahir Durmus - Radiologie.Berlin, Berlin, Germany

Dr. Tahir Durmus is a Radiology Specialist at the Radiologie.Berlin, a private radiology institute in Germany. He formerly served as Consultant Radiologist and Clinical Scientist at the Charité Berlin, Department of Radiology. He attained the Habilitation (Postdoctoral Lecturer Qualification for Radiology) from Charité Berlin with key clinical focus on Multiparametric MRI in detection and image-guided biopsy of Prostate Cancer. He received his Board certification in Radiology from the Facharzt für Radiologie, Germany. He completed his residency program at the Charité Berlin under the supervision of Dr. Hamm. He has authored over 40 peer reviewed scientific papers and delivered over 80 abstracts and presentations at national and international scientific conferences. He has also conducted lectures on General Radiology during his medical studies at the Charité Berlin which included Head & Neck Imaging, Conventional and CT Chest Imaging, Abdominal CT, MSK and Urogenital MRI. His key clinical interests include Functional MRI, Prostate Cancer, MRI Contrast, MRI Breast Imaging and Myocardial Viability in MRI. Dr. Durmus has recently won the first prize at the North European Radiology Congress of Acta Radiologica for Prostate ADC-Paper in January 2017.

Dr. Luís Guimarães - University Health Network, Toronto, Canada

Dr. Luís S. Guimarães is Staff Abdominal Radiologist at the Joint Department of Medical Imaging, Mount Sinai Hospital, University Health Network and Women’s College Hospital. He also serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. Dr. Guimarães received his PhD from Oporto Medical School and his Board certification in Radiology from the Portuguese Board of Radiology. He has authored over 15 peer reviewed scientific articles and delivered over 70 national and international scientific presentations with key interests in Small Bowel Imaging, CT Radiation Dose Reduction, Dual Energy CT and Hepatobiliary MRI. His clinical practice and interests focus on Body CT, Body MR, Ultrasound, Fluoroscopy and Emergency Radiology. He has served on the Abdominal and Gastrointestinal Scientific Subcommittee for ECR from 2013 to 2015 and Abstracts and Scientific Communications reviewing panel for ESGAR from 2012 to 2016.

Dr. Shadpour Demehri - Johns Hopkins Medicine, Maryland, USA

Dr. Shadpour Demehri is an Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins Medicine, Department of Radiology and Radiological Science. He specializes in diagnostic radiology and musculoskeletal radiology. Dr. Demehri received his M.D. from the Tehran University School of Medicine in 2003. He completed a fellowship in radiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He performed his residency in diagnostic radiology in 2010 at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital, where he subsequently completed two fellowships, one in musculoskeletal and nuclear radiology and a second in noninvasive cardiovascular imaging. Dr. Demehri is certified by the American Board of Radiology and has authored over 40 peer reviewed scientific publications.

Dr. Larry Filipow - University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada

Dr. Larry J Filipow is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Alberta, and a fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine. He received his PhD degree from the University of Oxford, UK in 1979. He worked afterwards as an NHS Medical Physicist at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford. In 1982, he was appointed as the first ever Diagnostic Imaging Physicist in the province of Alberta. He created a Radiology Resident Imaging Physics Training Program at the University of Alberta which is still ongoing. Dr. Filipow is a past member of the AAPM Education Committee, and was the Local Arrangements Chair of the 1992 AAPM Summer School on MRI in Banff, Alberta (the first summer school to be held outside of USA). He was the Co-Director of the 1999 AAPM Summer School on PACS. He was the Project Manager who led the Alberta province-wide Digital Mammography Systems Acquisition Program in 2007. Also in 2007, Dr. Filipow helped the Canadian Armed Forces purchase deployable CT scanners and traveled to Afghanistan to help commission the CT scanner at the KAF Hospital. Dr. Filipow is a member of the Canadian Association of Radiologist, Mammography Accreditation Program Review Committee, and consults on a wide range of radiology projects across Canada.

Dr. Pedro Augusto Gondim Teixeira - CHU, Nancy, France

Dr. Pedro Augusto Gondim Teixeira is Radiologist, Teacher and Researcher at the University Hospital and Nancy’s School of Medicine. He is also an Assistant Professor at the MCU-PH (University Master of Conferences – Hospital Practitioner). He graduated from the Medical School at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) in 2004. He completed his radiology residency in São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo in 2009. He was then enrolled in two fellowship programs in Musculoskeletal Imaging under the supervision of Professor D. Resnick in San Diago, USA, and under the supervision of Professor A. Blum in Nancy, France. He is currently conducting research activities at the Interventional and Diagnostic Adaptive Imaging Laboratory (IADI), University of Lorraine in France with support from the government. His main research focuses include Functional MRI on MSK Oncology (Perfusion, Diffusion and Proton Spectroscopy) and Advanced Imaging on Wide Area-Detector CT (Metal Artifact Reduction, Dynamic CT, Bone Subtraction).

Dr. Ewoud Smit - Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen, Netherlands

Dr. Ewoud Smit is a Medical Researcher and Radiology Resident at the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, Radboud University Medical Center since 2013. He received his M.D. at the University Medical Center Utrecht in 2009 and his MSc degree in Physics at the University of Groningen in 2004. He has (co-)authored 19 peer reviewed scientific papers. His research focuses on subtraction imaging, 4D-CT angiography and high resolution CT perfusion imaging. Dr. Smit received an award for Best Scientific Paper Presentation 2012 within the Neuro topic at the European Congress of Radiology, and for Best Scientific Paper Presentation 2014 at the Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of the Netherlands. He is a frequent invited speaker at international conferences.

Dr. António Matos - Hospital Garcia de Orta, Almada, Portugal

Dr. António Matos is a Radiologist at the Hospital Garcia de Orta and Hospital Beatriz Ângelo, Portugal. He received his MD degree from Medical School at Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He completed his residency program at the Hospital Garcia de Orta and clinical fellowship programs at UZ LEUVEN in Belgium, University of North Carolina in USA and Hospital da Luz in Portugal.

Dr. Narinder Paul - Toronto General Hospital, Toronto, Canada

Dr. Narinder Paul is the Division Chief of Cardiothoracic Imaging and a Professor of Cardiothoracic Imaging at the University of Toronto. He received his MD degree from Southampton University Medical School (UK) and his Board certification in Internal Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians (UK). Dr. Paul has authored over 100 peer reviewed scientific papers and delivered in excess of 150 National and International scientific presentations with key interests in Image Optimization and Radiation Dose Reduction. Dr. Paul has served on several scientific committees including the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Society of Thoracic Radiology and the RSNA (Radiological Society of North America). Dr. Paul will be the Chair-Chief of Medical Imaging at the Western University, and an Imaging Scientist at the Lawson and Robarts Research Institutes in London, ON from July 2st, 2017.

Dr. Cesar Nomura - University of São Paulo Medical School, São Paulo, Brazil

Dr. Cesar Higa Nomura is the Director of Cardiovascular Radiology Department at the University of São Paulo Medical School, Brazil. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Paulista Society of Radiology and the Director of the Brazilian Chapter of SCCT (Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography). He received his MD degree from São Paulo University, where he subsequently finished his medical residence in Radiology and specialization course in MRI. He completed his specialization course in Coronary CT Imaging and Cardiac MRI at the Harvard University in 2005. The main focus of Dr. Nomura’s scientific research projects include: cardiac CT and MR imaging, CT angiography of the coronary arteries, reperfused acute myocardial infarction, comprehensive assessment of myocardial perfusion defects, regional wall motion, and left ventricular function.

Dr. Frank Rybicki - The Ottawa Hospital, Ottawa, Canada

Dr. Frank J. Rybicki is the Chief and Chair at The Ottawa Hospital, Radiology Department, and the Professor and Chair at The University of Ottawa. He received his medical degree from the Harvard Medical School and his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the former director of the Applied Imaging Science Laboratory (AISL) that was the initial radiology program to launch wide-area detector CT. The AISL was the first to recognize the relationship between contrast enhancement patterns and blood flow. In addition to novel applications of CT technology to patient care such as transplant imaging, his group has recently made key contributions to the rapidly emerging field of 3D printing. Dr. Rybicki holds leadership positions at the American College of Radiology related to his sub-specialty expertise in cardiovascular imaging and radiation dose risks.

Ferdinand Schweser - University at Buffalo, Buffalo, USA

Ferdinand Schweser, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Neurology and Biomedical Engineering and the Technical Director of MRI at the University at Buffalo, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. His specialty and research focus includes Bioinformatics, Multiple Sclerosis, Neurodegenerative Disorders, Neurology and Radiology. He received his PhD degree from Friedrich Schiller University, Germany in 2013. He completed the postdoctoral training at the Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology I, Jena University Hospital in Germany. He has authored 163 peer reviewed scientific articles and delivered over 30 national and international scientific presentations. He has also authorized book chapters, monographs and press releases in areas of Susceptibility Weighted MRI, Parallel Transmission of MRI and many more. His current focus is MRI Contrast Mechanisms and improving the sensitivity and specificity of MRI with respect to biophysical properties of brain tissue.

Dr. Russell Bull - Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Bournemouth, UK

Dr. Russell Bull was appointed as a Consultant Radiologist at Bournemouth in 2000. Bournemouth had the first UK Toshiba Medical Aquilion multislice CT installed in 2001 and has been the main UK reference site for Toshiba Medical ever since. The Royal Bournemouth Hospital was the first hospital in the UK to install the Aquilion One single rotation, single heart-beat cardiac CT scanner in May 2009 which was subsequently replaced with an Aquilion ONE Vision in 2013. An 128 slice Aquilion CXL was installed at Bournemouth in 2012, also incorporating AIDR 3D technology. The Aquilion ONE GENESIS was installed as a third scanner in May 2017. Dr. Bull initially worked as a general cross sectional radiologist and started a cardiac CT service at Bournemouth in 2004 using a Toshiba Medical Aquilion 16. For the last 6 years he has worked almost exclusively as a Cardiothoracic Radiologist with his time split between cardiac CT and MRI. His interests include the promotion of CT as a low-dose technique and increasing efficiency within radiology departments by optimizing technology and workflows. Dr. Bull is currently secretary of The British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging and has recently been elected as a future president of the society.

Dr. Dimitri Mitsouras - Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, USA

Dr. Dimitri Mitsouras is the Director of Applied Imaging Science Lab at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Department of Radiology, and Assistant Professor of Radiology at the Harvard Medical School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Brown University in 1998 and his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2004. He has published over 65 peer reviewed articles in the field of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Computed Tomography. He is currently funded by an NIH Career Development Award and research grants from Toshiba America Medical Systems and Vital Images to develop next generation technologies for the assessment of lesion hemodynamic significance via Computed Tomography Angiography and clinical 3D printing.
