SOCIAL: PROVIDING TIME FOR FUN INTERACTION Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today’s story.

Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Ask God to help kids understand that they don’t have to wait until they’re “grown up” to make a difference—they can do that right now! Pray that God would give you some ideas to pass along to your kids for ways they can make a difference in someone’s life right now. Ask God to reveal the same for you.

1. EARLY ARRIVER IDEAWHAT YOU NEED: An offering container

WHAT YOU DO:• Show the kids where to put their offerings as they arrive.• Ask the following “get-to-know-you” questions and let each kid share their individual answers. o What would you like to eat right now? o If you weren’t here at church (the best place on earth), where would you like to be right now? Why? o If you could be any age, how old would you like to be right now? Why? o If you could make a phone call, whom would you call right now? Why?• Add more questions as time allows. Invite the kids to come up with additional questions.

2. JUMP … RIGHT … NOW!WHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed

WHAT YOU DO:• Lead the kids in a quick-response game. • Tell them that you will give them something they must do, but they can’t begin until you say, “right … NOW.” • Explain that some of the actions might be easy for them and hard for others, or vice versa. Everyone is different. If the

action is easy for them, they might be the first one to complete it.Note: Be sensitive to your group and try to provide a variety of actions that will allow each kid an opportunity to finish first. Create additional or different actions than the ones listed below to suit your group. Vary the time kids must wait to do the action by pausing for an undetermined time before saying “NOW!” o Do 10 jumping jacks right … NOW! o Add the numbers 233 and 145 right … NOW! (378) o Find someone in our group who likes broccoli right … NOW! o Spell INDIVIDUALITY right … NOW! o Jump up and down five times right … NOW! o Name the capital of (your state) right … NOW! o Name the book of the Bible that comes before Leviticus in the Old Testament right … NOW! (Exodus) o Find the person in our group with the smallest feet right … NOW!

GROUPS: CREATING A SAFE PLACE TO CONNECT Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible story applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions.

1. PAPER-SHAPER (application activity / review the Bible story)WHAT YOU NEED: Bible, 5 sheets of paper for each kid

WHAT YOU DO:• Give each of the kids a piece of construction or scrap paper.• Remind them that today’s Bible story focused on words of encouragement that Paul wrote to Timothy. Read aloud 1

Timothy 4:12.• Tell the kids that you’re going to “set an example” for them to follow. Explain that you will tear a piece of paper into a

shape. You won’t tell them what the shape is; they will have to watch you closely and tear their papers to match yours to discover what it is. Make small tears and then let the kids imitate what you’ve done before moving on to another tear.

• Go through the 5 shapes listed below or add others that connect with the Bible story in some way. After each shape is completed, let kids identify it and then use the shape as a springboard to discuss ways they can “set an example for others in what they say and in how they live.

o Heart (How can you show love to someone this week?) o Mouth (How can you use the words that come out of your mouth to make a difference?) o Hand (How can you use your hands to make a difference this week?) o Cross (How might you be able to share Jesus with someone this week?) o Arrow (How can YOU make a difference right now?)• [Make It Personal] (Tear a sheet of paper into a shape that represents a way you are making a difference at home,

school, work, or with your family and those you know.)

WHAT YOU SAY:“You guys are great ‘Paper-Shapers!’ You followed my example and each of our paper shapes looked very much alike. This week you will have tons of opportunities to set an example—not with paper shapes, but with the things you say and do. No matter your age, God has things He wants you to do to help others know Him, too. There are things that you can do for your family, at your school, and in your neighborhood that no one else can do. Sometimes it’s easy to think that we have to wait until we’re older to really make a difference and help other people. But God doesn’t want us to wait that long! He wants to use you NOW—today! God has given you all you need to help others, and you don’t have to be older, richer, or famous to do them. [Bottom Line] You can make a difference right now.”

* 2. PAY IT FORWARD (application activity)WHAT YOU NEED: “Make a Difference Coupons” Activity Page, markers, scissors, mobile device with map app (optional)

WHAT YOU DO:• Set out markers then give each kid four “Make a Difference Coupons” and have them read what’s written on the card. • Explain that the coupons are a fun way to remember and live out what they learned today: [Bottom Line] You can make

a difference right now.

• Challenge kids to do or say something kind to someone this week and then leave the coupon where that person will find it and pass it on.

• As kids neatly color the arrows on their coupons, ask them to name some ways they can use their coupons to live out 1 Timothy 4:12 this week.

• Ask them to finish this sentence: “I can make a difference right now by _______!” Consider writing their ideas on a whiteboard, tablet, or poster. If they get stumped, name some places they will go this week such as school, shopping, home, church, out to eat, a sporting or other special event, a relative’s house, a friend’s house, the bus, and so on. Ask how can they make a difference in those places. Here are a few suggestions:

o Help carry something for someone o Wash a dirty window o Compliment someone for something they did o Make someone’s bed o Read to a younger sibling or friend o Pray for someone o Write a note o Set the table o Say thank you o Take care of a pet• Optional: Pull up a map of your local area and let kids find their neighborhoods, school, favorite stores, parks, etc. Some

of those locations will be common to many but probably not all of the kids. Lead them in understanding the exciting opportunity they have to make a difference in those specific places that are unique to them.

WHAT YOU SAY:“Isn’t it exciting to know that there are people you will meet and places you will go this week that no one else in our Small Group will? God can use YOU to touch the lives of others in a way that nobody else can. I think that’s so awesome! You don’t have to wait until you’re another year older or even another minute older. [Bottom Line] You can make a difference right now. Use your ‘Make a Difference Coupon’ this week to, well, make a difference!”

3. MUSICAL SHOES (memory verse activity)WHAT YOU NEED: Bible, a variety of large-size adult footwear, music, and music player

WHAT YOU DO:• Place footwear items all around the room. Set out one less shoe than the number of kids. • Ask the kids to guess the kinds of people who might wear each of the shoes in the room (man, woman, young, old,

doctor, farmer, athlete, teacher, etc.)• Recite 1 Timothy 4:12a together.• Kids will be familiar with the game “Musical Chairs,” so tell them that “Musical Shoes” is similar to it.• Explain that you will play some music as the kids move around the room as quickly as they can without actually running.

When the music stops, they must find ONE footwear item and put it on. The kid who’s left without a shoe will lead the others in reciting the memory verse.

• You can remove one more shoe after each round, but continue to let all the kids play. This will make the game fun and increasingly chaotic!

WHAT YOU SAY:“1 Timothy 4:12 tells us not to let anyone look down on us just because we have small feet. Oops, I mean … because we are young. All of the shoes in our game belong to adults, but when it comes to following God, it doesn’t matter what size shoe you wear. God has a part for you to play in His incredible story and you can start playing that part right now. You don’t have to wait until you have a job, drive a car, go to college, get married, or have big feet! [Bottom Line] You can make a difference right now.”

PRAY AND DISMISSWHAT YOU NEED: Timer with an alarm

WHAT YOU DO: • Ask everyone to scrunch down low to the floor.• Explain that you will set the timer to go off in a few seconds. As soon as they hear it ring, they should jump up and shout

out today’s Bottom Line: [Bottom Line] You can make a difference right now.• Repeat several times, changing the amount of time before the alarm goes off.

WHAT YOU SAY:“God wants you to make a difference in this world, but that isn’t something you have to wait 10 seconds or 15 minutes to do. God wants to use you RIGHT NOW. He wants you to jump up this week whenever you see a chance to say or do something that is kind and good. [Bottom Line] You can make a difference right now. I’ll set the timer one more time for a minute or two. As you wait for it to go off, talk to God. Ask Him to help you live out what you learned this month. Ask Him to help you discover and use the unique gifts He’s given you. Then, when the timer goes off let’s all jump up and say, ‘AMEN.’” (Set the timer. When it goes off, finish with a short prayer for the group.)

Give each child a GodTime card. Pass out Parent Cue cards as adults arrive to pick up.
