Horizon Executive and Premier Room (97 units) The Horizon Club Executive and Premier Rooms exude a feeling of warmth and well-being in the pleasing tones of red, orange, gold and walnut brown in the furnishings. The rooms are fitted with ergonomically designed furniture for ultimate comfort, with custom-designed mattresses, plush duvets and bedding for a good night’s sleep. Table and floor lamps and a chandelier of contemporary design are there to light up to suit the mood. Executive Suite (26 units) The Executive Suites are very spacious, covering 74 square metres, and offer a spectacular view of the city. There is a large bedroom with a custom-designed bathroom equipped with designer bath amenities, a separate living room and a private workstation that are so ideal for long staying guests or families travelling together. The suites,

furnished in the warm signature colours of the hotel rooms, also feature classic materials such as velvet and burl veneer. There are also units equipped with a dining area and a kitchenette designed for small get-togethers and semi-formal business appointments.

Malaysian Suite (1 unit) Located on the second highest floor of the hotel at Level 27, it has a commanding view of the city’s splendid buildings and landmarks. This one and only Malaysian Suite covers a sprawling 240 square metres. The restaurants at the Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur cater to all tastes, and the finest palates. From local cuisines to international, from Malay to Chinese and Indian, French to Japanese, it’s a varied and exciting culinary journey for guests and gourmands. The restaurants are headed by the best chefs in their field, and dining here is always an experience to look forward to.

Restaurant Lafite

Restaurant Lafite was designed by Adam Tihany, a renowned American interior designer and interior architect. Spago and Le Cirque are his creations. Lafite is striking for its stylish, contemporary design. It has a unique circular dining area, and in the centre of it is a sea-green glass water feature. A continuous cascade of water from the ceiling down conveys a cool and soothing ambience to the restaurant. Hues of green, brown and ivory in the décor give it a timeless, elegant feel. There is a private dining room that can accommodate a party of 10, while a semi-private dining area allows guests to delight in the ambience of the main restaurant and

still feel exclusive within it. The restaurant can seat 75 persons in total. To complement Lafite’s exquisite French cuisine is its fine wines from France, Italy, Spain and Germany, and from the best vineyards of the New World. A new addition to Lafite is the Red Room, a plush, intimate space where guests can enjoy champagne, wine and cocktails before proceeding to dinner.

Zipangu

Zipangu exudes calm and serenity in its warm woody feel, water flowing over stone and glass, and in the bamboo garden that surrounds it. Walls of stacked glass bottles that are the sake and wine cellar form a spectacular entrance. There is a bar with a private lounge for drinks before lunch or dinner. Two private rooms and five semi-private enclaves separated from the main restaurant by timber battens are dining options for guests. A sheet of water falling down glass, water bubbling up from rocks or gurgling in a Japanese stone receptacle bring a Zen-like ambience in the main dining hall. It has a view of the gardens too. This Tokyo-style brasserie stands out for its spacious open kitchen featuring the sushi, teppanyaki and tempura counters. Diners can sit at these counters and watch the chefs at work, and interact with them. Signature dishes from Japanese chef Ishii Takayuki include Maguro Tartar Avocado Sauce, Gindara Kousou Mushi or Steamed Cod with Herb Oil and Soy Sauce Vinaigrette, Aji to Yasai No Soup or Minced Horse Mackerel Balls in a Vegetable broth, and Kaisen Spicy Roll.

There are sets for lunch and dinner. At dinner you could try the Australian Wagyu and King Crab, Prime Sushi and Teppanyaki sets, that come with a wide array of appetizers. All these feature the finest and freshest ingredients from Japan. On Sundays and public holidays, Zipangu lays out a Buffet Brunch from 11.30am to 2.30pm.

Shang Palace Shang Palace exudes auspiciousness, in its grand welcoming entrance where an intricate carving of nine celestial dragons watches over. Shades of deep red and peach dominate in this classic imperial décor. Inside, sumptuous food awaits, with the finest Cantonese dishes in an extensive menu. You could feast on these in the splendid ambience of the main dining hall that overlooks the lush gardens of the Shangri-La Hotel, or in any of the eight private dining rooms. Dedicated and attentive staff are on hand, seeing to your every need. Master chefs rule the Shang Palace kitchen, bringing out signature dishes like Poached Farm Chicken with Chinese Rose Wine and Dried Scallop Sauce, Baked Large Prawn with Hawthorn Berry Sauce, Slow Braised Beef Short Rib with Aged “Hua Tiao” Wine, and Braised Whole Abalone served with Egg Fried Rice. Then there are the classic Stewed Goose Webs with Fish Maw and Mushrooms in Supreme Oyster Sauce, Double-boiled Bird’s Nest with Crab Roe Sauce, and Wok-fried Stuffed Fish Maw with XO sauce.

Set menus for two or more people, and for 10, are available for both lunch and dinner. Shang Palace also carries a vegetarian menu. At lunch, dimsum is very popular, with a wide variety for selection. It is steamed on order and served a la minute.

Lemon Garden Cafe All the food is fresh and hot off the Live Buffet Arena at the Lemon Garden Cafe. It’s a unique dining concept, with the dishes prepared a la minute, using the freshest ingredients. Take your choice of cuisines - Chinese, Malay, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Thai and western. Each has its own theatre kitchen. At the Chinese kitchen is a large water tank with live seafood in it, and the chefs will bring out the ever popular steamed fish, or large prawns hot from the wok, smothered in the most delicious sauce. There is a noodle station and dimsum hot from the steamer. On the Italian side is a wood-fired pizza oven, so expect freshly baked pizzas. Pasta, grilled vegetables and salads are top draw here too. Skewers of freshly roasted chicken come out of the hot tandoor at the Indian kitchen, and the aroma of Indian spices hangs in the air from freshly cooked curries. The variety of food at this constantly changing buffet satisfies every craving, whether it is the freshly-shucked oysters, luscious crabs, prawns and shellfish at the cold section, sashimi and sushi on the Japanese side or the carvery of roast beef and lamb. The dessert counter is irresistible with its attractive display and the chocolate fountain is just as tempting. There is even a gluten-free section to cater to those with special food needs.

Lobby Lounge It’s a green, serene view from wherever you are seated at the Lobby Lounge. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows give an unobstructed glimpse of the matured garden of tropical trees and shrubs. High-backed chairs and sofa settees in light gold and green, and tall crystal chandeliers hanging down, convey an elegant ambience. Guests can lean back, make their orders for afternoon tea and relax to piano music. It’s a place to greet and meet friends, clients or work mates over a cup of tea, coffee and drinks.

There’s a choice of the Traditional Malaysian Afternoon Tea or the Traditional Classic Afternoon Tea served in an elegant three-tiered tray. A selection of signature cakes is also available. The Lobby Lounge also offers a snack menu throughout the day. In the evening, a band performs from 6.30pm till 11.45pm every day except Sunday.

Arthur’s Bar and Grill

Arthur’s Bar and Grill is the perfect place to meet up for drinks and casual dining, or to unwind after work. It is modelled on a Manhattan pub-style concept, with warm tones emanating from the wood, leather and brickwork in its furniture and fittings. From a tall ceiling hangs a cluster of steel lamps in a chandelier formation, hovering over a spectacular stretched bar counter in the centre. A double-height, illuminated back bar bottle feature catches the eye, as well as the display of a wide selection of liquor, wines and beers. There are comfortable leather seats along the length of the bar, as well as at the tables in front of it.

Out of the main dining area, tall tables and stools on the terrace, facing the lush green garden of the Shangri-La Hotel, set the mood for drinks and cocktails with tapas. You can order anything from Nachos to Spicy Chicken Wings, Garlic Prawns with dried chilli and Yorkshire pudding with pulled beef, from a tapas menu hanging beneath the table. The menu at Arthur’s Bar and Grill is about both western and local Malaysian specialities. There is the Arthur’s Beef Burger, Minced Meat and Mushroom Pie and Fish & Chips side by side with Char Kway Teow, Malaysian Satay and Seafood Mee Mamak, even vegetarian dishes.

Band performances and live sports matches are regular entertainment at Arthur’s Bar and Grill. The main dining area can seat 163 guests. Private parties and dinners can be held upstairs, where the whole floor can be yours. Lemon Garden 2Go

Lemon Garden 2Go is a deli, café and food retail shop all in one. Signature sandwiches made to order, breads, pastries, pasta and salads are there for takeaway or eat in, together with beverages and a variety of fruit juices. Daily Specials are available for lunch here from Monday to Friday, from hot dishes like Chicken Soup Noodles and Curry Noodles to Nasi Lemak and BBQ Beef Brisket. There are tables within the café, and outside overlooking the green maze.

Lemon Garden 2Go is where you can order that custom-made cake for that special occasion, choosing from the wide selection in the showcase. Here is also the place to shop for hand-made chocolates, cookies, speciality coffee and tea and other Shangri-La branded retail products.

B ANQUET AND CONVENTION FACILITIES

For banquets and functions Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur has some of the finest and largest rooms to offer, complemented with unparalleled services to ensure an event proceeds smoothly. There are 13 function rooms in all, named after the States in Malaysia and they are specially designed to cater for private banquets, seminars, business meetings, product launches and displays and national and international conferences and conventions. The function rooms range in size from 44 square metres to 1,509 square metres. The smaller rooms are perfect for groups of 20 while the pillar-free Grand Ballroom can comfortably seat 2,000 people. These can be equipped with state-of-the-art sound systems, lighting equipment, slide, overhead and movie projectors, easels, whiteboards and flip charts and duplicating and photocopying services. Additional telephone and telex lines, closed-circuit television and other equipment can be made available on request. Grand Ballroom The splendour of the Grand Ballroom is reflected in the magnificent crystal chandeliers designed by Austrian craftsmen, decorative light fittings and deep wool carpets in rich gold and blue. Ornamental resin shields with pewter finishing adorn the walls, together with imported wall panels in fabric and bevelled mirror panels. Doors made from solid oak and decorated with floral carvings and mother-of-pearl inlay open into the Grand Ballroom. They are framed with carved timber architraves.

The Grand Ballroom is equipped with state-of-the-art sound system and sophisticated lighting and technology from the UK. It is a definitive social venue, whether it’s for a banquet, grand ball, wedding, international conference or cocktail party, with supportive services to ensure the perfect orchestration of the event.

Manfred Weber General Manager

An Austrian national, Mr Weber brings with him more than 20

years of experience in the hospitality industry. He was previously

with the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore, where he was responsible

for the success of the hotel’s daily operations and special

projects. Prior to joining the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore, Mr

Weber was in Shanghai and Beijing for 11 years. He had

distinguished himself working with luxury hotel groups in Saudi Arabia and Germany

before his China stint. As General Manager of the Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur,

Mr Weber is in charge of providing leadership and direction to ensure the efficient

and effective operations of this property.

Allwyn Drego Hotel Manager

Mr Drego comes with 20 years of experience in hospitality. He

was previously the Hotel Manager with the Shangri-La Hotel,

Mumbai, where he was responsible for its pre-opening and

overall hotel operations. He has worked with resort hotels in

Indonesia and Maldives where he was the Pre-opening and

Opening General Manager. He has also held the posts of General

Manager and Executive Assistant Manager in hotels and resorts in Goa and Agra.

With his extensive experience, Mr Drego is well placed to further enhance the market

position of Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur as the top hotel choice for travelers in

KL Tower The KL Tower of Menara Kuala Lumpur, in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, stands at 421 metres and is the seventh tallest telecommunication tower in the world and the tallest in Southeast Asia. Experience a breathtaking view of Kuala Lumpur on the Observation Deck at 276 metres above ground. The Tower is located within the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, one of the oldest forest reserves in the country. You can also talk a walk through this. Petronas Twin Towers The 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers, standing at a height of 451.9 metres, is Kuala Lumpur’s crown jewel. Majestic by day and dazzling by night, it was designed by master architect Cesar Pelli. You can go up to 170 metres in an elevator, with the doors opening at the Skybridge connecting the two towers. You can ascend even higher at Level 86 and capture a spectacular view of Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding area.

The Sultan Abdul Samad Building The Sultan Abdul Samad Building is Kuala Lumpur’s most historical landmark. It was designed by British architect Arthur Charles Alfred Norman and was completed in 1896. It is striking for its Moorish domes and clock tower and served as the British secretariat until Malaya’s independence in 1957. It is now home to the Supreme and High Courts, and houses the National Textile Museum. It faces the Tudor-style building of the Royal Selangor Club.

National Monument The National Monument is a group of bronze sculptures of seven soldiers carrying the Malaysian flag, and represents the fight for freedom in the country. The monument, built in 1966, stands at 15.5 metres high. It was the work of architect Felix de Weldon who also designed the famous Iwo Jima monument. Each of the soldiers represents one of the seven qualities of leadership: leadership, unity, strength, wariness, suffering, courage and sacrifice.

Central Market

The Central Market is a prominent landmark in colonial and modern-day Kuala Lumpur. It houses several art galleries and stalls, shops and restaurants and is a showcase for the arts and culture of the country. It began life as a wet market in 1888, built by Yap Ah Loy, the city’s Chinese Kapitan.

Chinatown

Also known as Petaling Street, Chinatown at the heart of Kuala Lumpur is one of the most colourful and popular tourist spots in the country. It’s a vibrant night market and a bargain hunter’s paradise. It’s brightly lit and jam-packed with stalls offering all kinds of wares, from clothes to bags as well as food and drinks. On either side of this night market are shops that have been around since the turn of the 19th century.

Karyaneka Handicraft Centre Karyaneka is a centre for Malaysian handicraft. It has on exhibition and for sale a large collection of products which mirrors the country’s cultural roots. They range from batik paintings and clothes to elaborate woven songket pieces, rattan products, silver jewellery, wood carvings, pottery and brasswork.
