1. I was born on September 11 1965.
2. I am the great-great-great nephew of Herman Melville.
3. My father, a chemistry professor died in a car crash while drunk when I was two.
4. I was born in Harlem, before my mother and I moved to San Francisco and then Connecticut
where we lived for a time with drug addicted hippies with bands playing in the basement.
5. My first job was as a caddy at a golf course.
6. At the age of nine I started taking classical guitar lessons and piano lessons.
7. I played in bands such as Vatican Commandos, Flipper and AWOL.
8. I started a philosophy degree at the University of Connecticut and started to DJ at the
campus radio station WHUS.
9. I transferred to the State University of New York before dropping out to pursue DJ work and
music full time.
10. In 1984 I decided to become vegan after taking in a stray cat funnily enough named tucker.
11. In 2010 Miyun Park and I released a collection of ten essays called Gristle: From Factory
Farms to Food Safety (Thinking Twice about the Meat We Eat).
12. In 1999 I released my fifth album Play which features songs such as Porcelain, Why Does My
Heart Feel so Bad, Bodyrock and Run On.
13. Each of the tracks on the Play album has been licensed to films, TV Shows, non-profit groups
and commercials and resulted in The Washington Post publishing an article about a
mathematical equation known as the ‘Moby Quotient’ which determines to what degree a
musician has sold out.
14. Play has sold over 12 million copies.
