Pastor’s Corner

“Me and my household…We will serve the Lord; We will serve the Lord…Me and my household!”

This Sunday begins the Advent season. Advent – from the Latin “ad-venire” meaning “to come to” or arrival - is a period of preparation for the coming of Christ. Traditionally, we acknowledge a two-fold dynamic to this period of awaiting Christ’s appearance. First, we focus on Christ’s coming “in the flesh” – the Incarnation – which we will celebrate 4 weeks from now on Christmas. Additionally, we look to the Second Coming of Christ at the end of the age. Advent allows us the opportunity to reflect on both of these, assessing whether we are ready for either. What do we have planned for the next 28 days that will help us profoundly understand what the ‘reason for the season’ truly is and bring us to a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ – Emmanuel: “God with us”? And what decisions, expressed in our words and actions, are we choosing every day of our life that demonstrate our Discipleship as we prepare to meet the Lord when He comes again? Today, we have a few Advent resources available for you to take on your way out of Mass. These are meant to assist you in thought and prayer during the journey of this Sacred Season, so that you will be ready to accept the “good news of great joy that will be for all the people” – proclaimed at Christmas - that God has come to redeem us and save us from sin and death; to give us healing and hope. I also want to share with you a few on-line resources that can benefit you and your family this Advent. ‘Formed’ is a website that has many faith formation components, including Advent related material. Our parish pays a monthly fee to allow you to enjoy this service for free. Just go to this website (https://formed.org) and register using our parish code: NMFAWW Another resource is the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ [USCCB] website. Using this address: http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/liturgical-year/advent/, you can find something for every day of Advent to enjoy with family or friends. I encourage you to print out the Advent calendar offered by the USCCB, located at the bottom of the list of ideas on this web page. I also found http://catholicism.about.com/od/holydaysandholidays/p/Advent.htm to have some good thoughts and suggestions on Advent and Christmas itself. Finally, I offer a personal suggestion for an Advent devotion – the St. Andrew Prayer. “Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in the piercing cold. In that hour, vouchsafe, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires, through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and of His blessed Mother. Amen.” This is prayed 15 times a day, from the Feast of St. Andrew (November 30) until Christmas day. No matter what the endeavor may be, if we make the effort to prepare, we will always experience a more peaceful and usually more fulfilling result! It is the same with our faith; the more we put in the more we receive. Fr. Nick
