Father Vincent Orum’s Journey to Uganda

Some parishioners have been asking me about my vacation at home. Probably some think that I was somewhere at the beach in Africa enjoying the warm, spring- like weather after a long flight from Newark to Brussels and Brussels to Entebbe, Uganda and a 400 miles drive to my village up country side.

Other than Sunday's when I celebrated masses for my village flocks in the new church sponsored by John Grasso(Saint Joseph, Swedesboro) and Saint Charles Borromeo parishioners, my week days were spent among my people on creating poverty alleviation program!

It was a well deserved working vacation on poverty eradication for my people in Giira village, Uganda! We provided 7 long horns Ankole cattle to seven families;13 women and 4 men benefitted from a newly initiated SORiGP program aimed at giving a small loan to an organized village group: some of them used the loan to buy grinding mills, open up kiosk: engage in buying and selling agricultural produce etc. We also inspected the 76 families with goat's restocking program. A number of the female goats produced young ones while I was there. Four families benefited from the first product and second distribution phase will be in December when the current young ones are weaned out! We hope to give out over ten goats to more than 10 families. Thanks to the generosity of David and Sheila Mitchel who donated the funds through Friends of Father Vincent project to help empower my people out of poverty!

I was privileged to install Stations of the Cross in our newly built chapel donated by Mary Kay Couturie as I also had the honor to baptize my newly born niece Victoria in the church on Corpus Christi Sunday!

We also inspected the water extension program for Giira gravity flow for the villages! Thanks to David and Sheila Mitchell for their generosity and contributions that made it possible to extend the water project begun by John Grasso. This has helped to curb water born diseases and made it easier for both women and children for their household consumption! Many families are still in the waiting lists and more funds permitting, we will be able to reach them. I invited the District Veterinary officer Dr.Walter and Mr. Kumakech the veterinary doctor from Abanga on a number of occasions to help educate people on animal husbandry!!

I also met with the students and children under our student's adoption program and was happy to learn how well their performances are! Some are already giving back to the community as journalists and radio presenters, medical doctor, educators, community social workers ,agricultural officers etc! Thanks to all my friends who got involved in adopting these students to help educate them.

The trees we planted some years back: pine trees, eucalyptus and cypress are coming out extreme very well and the beauty- amazing! A lot of excitement in the village as we crowned it with traditional agwara dance before I left for my long flight back to the USA!

All in all, it was a well deserved working vacation! Too many goats and chickens were given to me by my family, friends and relatives for my meal! No wonder I added some extra pounds!!

-Fr. Vincent Orum
