Pastor’s Corner

“Me and my household…We will serve the Lord; We will serve the Lord…Me and my household!”

Long before Christ was born, humanity experienced separation and fragmentation – one of the first effects of sin; and since we continue to sin, our world remains plagued by dissention and discord. Our Catholic teaching recognizes that fact and strives to proclaim the transforming message of love and mercy that Christ demonstrated in His passion, death and resurrection. At the Last Super Jesus prayed; “Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are.” (JN 17:11) One of the primary methods that Jesus used to convey His message was through question and answer sessions with groups of people. Sometimes it was with His disciples, other times with the scribes & Pharisees and, revolutionary for His day, He even conversed with “sinners”. Dialogue is an important endeavor in trying to understand one another and in finding ways toward the unity that Christ prayed for. The experience of the Catholic Church in any country is affected by the cultural, social, political and economic situation of that nation. This demands that the Church respond to the atmosphere & environment of each land. In the United States, one of the major factors that our county is realizing is the number of people who are ethnically Latino (Hispanic). This has brought both excitement and concern to the status quo – just as each wave of immigrants has done over time. Historically we know of the similar reaction sparked by the Irish Catholic influx of the mid 1800’s; the Italian immigrants of the early 1900’s and the treatment of Americans of German or Japanese heritage during the World Wars. In an attempt to build up trust and understanding within our Church – with the hope of extending this to our society – the Bishops of the United States have implemented a program of “encounter”, focusing on the relationship between those who are ethnically Latino at the first or second generation level and those of other heritage, whose roots stem from their grandparents or earlier.

This program began in the 1970’s and there have been 4 “encounters” so far. This year we are embarking on the “5th Encounter” (“V Encuentro”). The experience begins with small group discussions within the parish community during Lent (for the next 5 weeks). In these groups, feedback will be gathered on how to improve the recognition and integration of the Latino community within the Church. This feedback will be sent to the Diocese, and subsequently to the national Conference of Catholic Bishops. Following that we will have a parish-wide event to foster harmony and growing relationships among our parish family – perfect for our Family Discipleship!

If you are interested in joining a small group for the next 5 weeks to be part of this effort in fulfilling Jesus’ prayer of unity and in seeking ways to build up the Kingdom of God in our country, please contact the parish office. The groups meet on several different days and times that will hopefully comply with your schedule

Peace, Fr. Nick

For information about this meeting or about volunteering please contact Stacey King at 214-8826 or [email protected]. JONAH AT SIGHT AND SOUND THEATRE.
