Pastor’s Corner

“Me and my household…We will serve the Lord; We will serve the Lord…Me and my household!”

Mountains are most often – in my opinion – considered obstacles or challenges. Just think of the famous R&B song, “Ain’t no Mountain High Enough…to keep me from [getting to] you.”

However, mountains or hills are also held up as a goal to reach; an analogy for success or victory. In the version of “New York, New York” made popular by Frank Sinatra, there is the line “I want to wake up in a city, that doesn't sleep

And find I'm king of the hill, top of the heap.”

And lastly, mountains are just there; part of the journey that takes much effort to reach, only to descend again on the other side. Sorry, but here it goes…“The bear went over the mountain..To see what he could see. And all that he could see..Was the other side of the mountain.”

In Sacred Scripture, the Lord uses mountains in all three of these ways to demonstrate that as a Disciple our faith walk has various levels of experience and commitment.

For instance, it was on Mt. Moriah that Abraham was challenged to sacrifice his son Isaac; and Mt. Zion was the stronghold of the Jebusites, an obstacle that King David had to overcome to establish his kingdom.

We see Elijah’s victory over the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel; and, of course the ultimate goal of Christ to reach Mt. Calvary defeated sin and death.

Finally, the mountain in this Sunday’s Gospel account of the Transfiguration is only the setting where Jesus allows Peter, John and James to witness a glimpse of heavenly glory; from which they descend and return to the valley.

God presents us with mountains in our lives. They are different sizes for each Disciple and vary throughout our life. They evoke assorted responses: perseverance to overcome a hurdle, thanksgiving in reaching a goal, or willingness to leave our comfort zone and go down (out) on mission.

No matter what the mountain is that we are dealing with, we know that the Lord is our companion, when we let Him. He brought the 3 Disciples to a ‘place’ beyond their imagining; He can bring us to an experience beyond our dreams.

Peace, Fr. Nick
