Four months into this year of working to LightUp Rotary, I am more excited about Rotarythan ever before. I've been to 22 countries, visited dozens of cities, and met thousandsof Rotarians. I've seen amazing projects andbeen inspired over and over again by theterrific work Rotarians do all over the world.

And I've been privileged to be part of allkinds of Rotary events, from club meetings toRotary institutes, from Rotary Days to Foun-dation dinners.

ery event is memorable. I feel especially honored when I amvited to share in club celebrations. To me, taking part in a Ro-y club celebration as Rotary International president is like be-

g invited to a family event as an honored guest. Indeed, Rotarythe biggest family in the world.

u could say that Rotary is built of service: Each project is an-her brick in the big building that is Rotary. If our service formse bricks, then there is no question that friendship is the mortarat holds those bricks together. I see this every day, but no-here more clearly than at some of the most special Rotary clubents: their centennial celebrations.

ing president of Rotary International in its 110th year, I'veen lucky to take part in a number of these. It is natural, wheniting long-serving clubs, to want to know what their secret is cause I have always noticed that the longest-serving clubs areo some of the most productive. They are large, they are ac-e, and they do great work. Not only that, but they have a great

    me doing it.

course, that is their secret: In Rotary, strong friendships andeat service go hand in hand. When we enjoy our work, weant to do it. We want to work harder, and we want to work bet-. We look forward to Rotary meetings. Even when our livese busy, we make Rotary a priority because we want to seer friends, and we want to serve.

at is why Rotary is still here, after more than 109 years. In Chi-se, we say:

.life without a friend is a life without sun.

ur Rotary friendships give light to our lives, and it is Rotaryendship as well as service that lets us Light Up Rotary.

It is surely the wish in all our hearts thatthere is peace in our world.

Our Rotary Foundation is endeavoring toadvance this with the establishment of Ro-tary Peace Centers in various parts of theglobe.

The Rotary Peace Centers are the premiereducational program of the Foundation, and

this year I am asking Rotarians to foster world understanding, goodwill, and peace by promoting and publicizing the programso its work is enhanced.

The program funds up to 100 Rotary Peace Fellowships peryear, for fellows to study at one of the Foundation's speciallychosen universities. Fellows can earn a master's degree inpeace and conflict resolution or a related field at Duke Univer-sity and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in the UnitedStates; University of Queensland in Australia; Uppsala Univer-sity in Sweden; University of Bradford in England; and Interna-tional Christian University in Japan. Additionally, our profes-sional development certificate program in peace and conflictresolution is offered through Chulalongkorn University in Thai-land.

The idea of the Rotary Peace Centers is to create a cadre ofindividuals who are dedicated to peace and conflict resolution, and who have been given the tools to succeed in their efforts.Since the program began in 2002, nearly 900 peace fellowshave been engaged in peace activities throughout the world,

working for nongovernmental organizations, government agen-cies, the World Health Organization, World Bank, and others.

To fund the program, the Rotary Peace Centers Major GiftsInitiative has set a target of US$125 million by the end of thisRotary year. This is an achievable goal, but it needs your con-tinuing financial support. This is a program pertinent to the 21st century, and one worthyof all Rotarians' support.

In these days of anger, of anguish, of uncertainty in our world, itis important to remember that the brotherhood of man tran-scends the sovereignty of nations.

WORLD POLIO DAY: HEALTH OFFICIALS LAUD POLIO ERADICATION ACHIEVE-MENTS, POINT TO DISEASES ENDGAME

At a special Livestream program -- World Polio Day:Make History Today -- Rotary leaders joined globalhealth experts and celebrity singers to hail the progressof the Global Polio Eradication Initiative . After nearly 30years, the GPEI, which includes Rotary, the World HealthOrganization, UNICEF, U.S. Centers for Disease Controland Prevention, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Founda-tion, is on the brink of ending polio by 2018, making it thesecond infectious disease to be eradicated.

"A world without polio is within our grasp more than at

any point in the past," said Tom Frieden, director of theCDC, during a video message to the audience. "The po-liovirus continues to lose ground. Next month we willmark two years since the last case of wild poliovirus type3, giving every appearance of eradication, and leavingonly type 1 in the world."

Frieden talked about how Nigeria's Polio Emergency Op-erations Center aided in the quick and effective responseto the country's Ebola outbreak. Senior officials from thecenter were sent to Lagos to lead the effort. They openedan Ebola treatment unit and conducted contact tracing

with up to 500 people per day.

Rotary General Secretary John Hewko praised the workof the GPEI, calling the organization "perhaps the mostambitious and effective public-private partnership everassembled." More than 2.5 billion children have beenvaccinated since its launch.

The annual number of polio cases has fallen from350,000 in 1988 to 416 in 2013, and 222 so far this year,a remarkable decrease of more than 99 percent. UNICEFestimates that 10 million people would have otherwisebeen infected, while 1.5 million lives have been saved.

Rotary has contributed more than $1.2 billion to polioeradication since taking on the disease in 1979. Thatamount got a significant boost earlier this week after Ro-tary announced it will provide an additional $44.7 mil-lion toward the polio fight.

Reggae star Ziggy Marley, a celebrity End Polio Now am-bassador, opened the event via video welcoming partici-pants and performing a song.
