Presently, around 150 vessels, both from the Govt. and Private sectors (ranging from 20 to 15000 GT) ply in the waters around Andaman and Nicobar Islands to maintain the transportation requirements for personnel and essential goods from the Mainland and between the Islands. The availability of credible Ship Repair Facilities including dry docks is essential to ensure uninterrupted shipping services. The operating ships need these facilities to address their day- to -day defects, satisfactory maintenance of hull, machinery, equipment onboard and also for the periodical/ statutory survey requirements prescribed by the regulatory bodies. All operational ships are prescribed with mandatory requirements of dry docking, ranging from intervals of 12-36 months. Further, dry docks are also required to address the emergency/ break down repairs in the underwater hulls of the ship as and when they occur. Considering the requirements of the present fleet of vessels operating, the existing ship repair and dry dock facilities available in the Islands are inadequate, leading to frequent delays in ship repairs. The long laid up periods for the ships leading to reduced operational availability cause obvious interruptions in maintenance of essential services. The A&N Administration has taken a number of initiatives to mitigate the problem of inadequacy/ augment the ship repair and dry docking facilities in the A&N Islands.
