Letter from the BOARD CHAIR & CEO

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your truly inspiring love, care and kindness in 2016. With your time, talents and generosity 11,225 pediatric patient families were positively impacted by Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) of the Intermountain Area during the year! Because of your shared dedication to our mission, we surrounded a record number of families with the support they needed to be near and care for their seriously ill or injured children. We provided a home-away-from-home to ease daily burdens and empower families of hospitalized children with meaningful experiences and quality time together.

Our Ronald McDonald House® welcomed 3,827 guest families, with 13,277 individual family members that called our House their ‘home’ for 21,467 nights. We offered needed respite for 7,400 families, with 21,836 individuals that visited our Ronald McDonald Family Room® within Primary Children’s Hospital 81,312 times during the year! Remarkably, 1,038 meals were lovingly prepared and served to families by volunteers at both the House and Family Room, and 23,080 volunteer hours were contributed during the year.

Thanks to charitable funding through Rocky Mountain Power’s (RMP) Blue Sky Program, a new 180-panel solar power system was installed at the House in 2016. This exciting program will save charitable dollars and help reduce our carbon footprint. We were also grateful and thrilled to surpass our initial goal for the Honorary Grandparents Fund to help create memorable experiences for families of children with life-altering diagnoses. In preparation for building demolition, we closed the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Ogden Regional Medical Center. We are truly grateful to all those who made the Family Room possible and we’ll continue to focus our charitable resources to create the greatest and most positive mission impact possible. We are excited to announce the launch of a new Ronald McDonald Hospitality Cart Program inside ORMC and Shriner’s Hospital for Children in 2017.

Lastly, we were absolutely delighted to welcome a new staff member to our RMHC team, our Chief PAWSitivity Officer! Ollie is a chocolate labradoodle and certified facility therapy dog, whose job is to offer comfort to children and their families (and plenty of wet kisses).

Thank you for your generous support and shared commitment to our mission. Together we are keeping families close when they need it most.

With hearts filled with gratitude,

Lynnie Zimmerli, Board Chair Carrie Romano, Chief Executive Officer

In May of 2016 there was an exciting new addition to RMHC’s staff – and in this case,

the team member had been intensively training BEFORE he ever came on the job. Meet Ollie, a certified facility therapy dog and our Chief PAWSitivity Officer! Born December 29, 2015, Ollie was destined for greatness practically as soon as he opened his eyes. At just a few months old he was put into Ultimate Canine’s highly-respected training program, and came to us nine weeks later with a brain full of commands and a heart full of love.

We’re not kidding – this is an EXTREMELY social puppy! He loves to say ‘hello’ every day to staff members and families, and everyone is ready to stop and cuddle. Ollie is a chocolate-brown Labradoodle, who doesn’t shed and is almost entirely hypo-allergenic. Kids who have never been able to play with dogs before can socialize safely with this friendly bundle of fluff! Starting at a mere 35 pounds when he first came to the House, Ollie has grown into his long legs and is nearly up to his estimated full growth of 70 pounds. He is groomed weekly to stay as clean and beautiful as possible for

The Ronald McDonald Family Room® at Ogden Regional Medical Center (ORMC) was closed in 2016 in preparation for demolition of the Medical Tower at ORMC. Opened in 2009, the Family Room was the first in Utah and positively impacted more than 1,000 pediatric patients and families. We look forward to reaching even more families with our new Ronald McDonald Hospitality Cart program inside ORMC and at Shriner’s Hospital for Children. The cart and its hospitality volunteers will bring comfort and love to pediatric patient families – along with a selection of healthy snacks, drinks, activity kits and other comfort items.

young patients and their families, and enjoys regular outings in public (for practice) as well as swimming sessions.

We are so grateful to Keller Williams Salt Lake (who generously helped us get Ollie in the first place), Willow Creek Pet Center, Dr. Rick Campbell, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, and our wonderful PAWSitivity Council members Joe Vervaecke & Dave Smith, as well as an amazing team of volunteers who help

to keep Ollie healthy, fed, exercised, and on his best behavior while on the job. He turned one in December 2016, and we can barely remember the House without him! As he gets a little older he’ll also take up visiting duties at local hospitals, where he’ll be able to bring even more love, comfort, snuggles, and ‘knuckles’ (Ollie’s favorite trick is the ‘fist-bump’) to kids and families in the Salt Lake Area. We love you, Ollie!

2016 saw some exciting pilot programming as we began offering families specially-tailored, meaningful experiences through the Honorary Grandparents Fund (HGF). In partnership with Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital Foundation, the permanently endowed fund will generate an annual grant to RMHC to help create unique excursions and memory-making activities for families of children with life-limiting or life-altering conditions. Inspired by the HGF, there were three children and their families this past year who received memorable experiences facilitated by RMHC.

ALAnyA, who courageously battled cancer, was a sweet four-year-old who loved princesses and pampering. During her final visit to the Ronald McDonald House she received a private princess visit and professional photography session, with matching keepsakes for her mother and older brother.

KyAunA is a friendly sixteen-year-old with rare and complex medical conditions, and her favorite band from Australia headlined a concert in Salt Lake. She and her family received tickets and a family night out at Usana Ampitheatre.

JAKE, the self-appointed (and much-loved) ‘Mayor’ of the Ronald McDonald House, was a regular visitor at the house as he battled cancer. Nominated by House staff to be a McDonald’s flag bearer at a profes-sional soccer game in California, Jake was also surprised with tickets to a Red Sox game that same weekend. It was his first – and only – ride on an airplane, and a dream trip for him, his mom, and his sister.

We were thrilled to surpass our initial goal for the Honorary Grandparents Fund, with nearly $570,000 in charitable gift commitments, and deeply grateful to the supporters who are helping make this program possible. We hope to build the fund to $1M.

With charitable funding through Rocky Mountain Power’s (RMP) Blue Sky Program, a new 180-panel, solar power system

was installed at our Ronald McDonald House through the last months of 2016. The system is expected to reduce our annual energy costs by $7,256 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1,509 tons over the next 30 years. An educational kiosk has also been provided so that children and families can learn about solar technology and track the kilowatts of solar power being generated by the panels in real time. We were very excited about our new sys-tem as it will save charitable dollars and help reduce our carbon footprint. The solar panels are a key part of our commitment to sustain-able practices and we’re grateful to RMP’s Blue Sky customers, Johnson Powers and Bruce Alder for making the project possible.

Our local McDonald’s Owner/Operators have been keeping families close with Ronald McDonald House Charities® of the Intermountain Area since the very beginning by generously opening their hearts and providing invaluable support, and playing an essential role in sustaining our House and Family Room(s).

McDonald’s Owner/Operators support the families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House and visit the Ronald McDonald Family Room throughout the year by placing RMHC donation boxes in their restaurants, donating a portion of Happy Meal and fry sales, hosting an annual customer fundraiser, and sponsoring our special events. They also support our mission by volunteering on our boards and lending their expertise and resources. We couldn’t do what we do without them!

Lee Maye Voorhees

In November 2016 Lee Maye Voorhees was recognized by Ronald McDonald House Charities for sharing her heart and hands in support of the families we

serve. The Utah Philanthropy Day awards ceremony at Little America in Salt Lake City celebrated Lee Maye, who, with her beloved late husband Bernard ‘Bernie’ Voorhees, faithfully delivered hundreds of beautiful hand-made blankets, quilts, baby bibs, and toys – along with millions of pop tabs – for more than 20 years. As a member and leader with the Good Sam’s, Lee Maye’s time and talents have contributed so much beauty and comfort to pediatric families. She understands that the most wonderful gifts are made with love and care – one stitch at a time. We are so grateful for her compassionate dedication, and delighted to name Lee Maye Voorhees our 2016 Philanthropy Day Honoree.

I was extremely impressed with the

cleanliness and array of amenities the

Ronald McDonald Family Room had

in Salt Lake City Primary Children’s

and wash some clothes after being

a few days in the hospital with my

daughter. Thank you for providing

this convenience!

With GRATITUDE

I loved just being able to relax

and visit with other parents or just

relaxing in quiet.

Maybe heaven is like this house. It

is such a place of love and caring.

Thank you to all of the staff for their

excellence in service and caring.

I thought the experience there was

wonderful. It was especially nice

when others came in to cook meals.

Because of my mental state (griev-

motivation to prepare meals.

The Ronald McDonald House Family

I do not know what I would do.

That first time I arrived, I was scared

and in shock. Having other families be

a support, and having staff willing to

remind me where spoons and bowls

are without making me feel like an idiot

was a tremendous support. Having food

available even when I come back from

the hospital at midnight, and being able

to just talk. Wonderful.

With GRATITUDE

My son had to be in the hospital

for his birthday. Family was able

to have a little party and cupcakes

there. It meant everything

to him. Thanks.

It’s nice to have a place to go to

decompress, even if just for a few

moments, where you aren’t around

all the hospital noises in your

child’s room.

What an amazing blessing, having

this available made a very difficult

situation easier. Thank you

The Ronald McDonald House was a

huge physical and emotional relief. We

are several hours away, and the dona-

tions that made our stay financially fea-

sible was a huge blessing. Thank you

for all the donations, grants, and love.

Create a Plan to Help Children and FamiliesAt Ronald McDonald House Charities® of the Intermountain Area, we provide strength and support to children and their families by keeping them together when they need it most. your gifts allow us to bring hope and help to children who are sick or injured through our programs and family-centered care.

Many of our supporters choose to provide for our future through planned

gifts. unlike cash donations, planned gifts are typically made from assets in your estate rather than from disposable income, and may come to fruition after your lifetime. A planned gift – large or small – can make a difference in the lives of pediatric patients and the families we serve.

Whether you would like to put your donation to work today or leave a legacy that will benefit the Charity after your lifetime, we can help you find a giving plan that meets your goals. With your help, we can change lives far into the future. With just a little planning and a big heart, you can help children and families stay together during times of medical crisis in a home-away-from-home.

If you would like to learn more about planned giving and how it can benefit you and Ronald McDonald House Charities, please call the Development office at (801)363-4663 or email [email protected] to request a brochure. you may also visit us at www.ronaldmcdonaldhouseutah.org and select ‘Get Involved/Support us/Leave a Legacy’.

your thoughtful gift planning will help provide stability and empower families of hospitalized children for years to come.

Minerva’s daughter, Hanna, was born 16 weeks early – and almost immediately needed

emergency surgery for a pierced intestine. The baby was life-flighted to Primary Children’s Hospital, and the desperate mother found a place to stay and Spanish-speaking staff and friends at the Ronald McDonald House. In spite of the odds, Hanna made it successfully through the difficult surgery, and Minerva knew she had a tiny warrior on her hands. After five challenging months Hanna was able to tolerate food and breathe on her own, and the family returned home just after the new year. This is, Minerva said, ‘the best story of my life.’ She continued, ‘the Ronald McDonald House was a blessing for us. Without the aid they would have been a much more difficult five months that we spent in the hospital. We will be eternally grateful to all the staff for their human warmth – we keep each and every one of you in our hearts.’

The Ronald McDonald House is a home-away-from home for Josefina, who has been travelling

to Shriner’s Hospital to treat severe infantile scoliosis from Montevideo, Uruguay, every three months since she was just one year old. Josefina turned 6 in 2016, and the House is a place of comfort for her. She knows the staff, she knows where everything is, and she loves to be able to have her family with her as they travel from one continent to another.

‘Gracias por ser parte de este equipo y ayudarnos a que Jose siga creciendo feliz y con fuerza para enfrentar cada desafío!! Thank you all!!!’

2016 S.O.S. (Stock Our Shelves) SponsorsDid you know that a donation of $1,000 will provide food, snacks, and supplies for the House or Family Room for an entire month? These generous 2016 supporters know that the way to anyone’s heart is, indeed, through the stomach!

When Lynaela was born near

the end of January 2016, her mother noticed that the baby’s stomach was oddly distended. Her doctor discovered that Lynaela was experiencing liver failure and immediately

referred the family to Primary Children’s Hospital. Her situation continued to worsen, and the baby was put on the list for a liver transplant. Two surgeries, a blood clot, and other complications followed. Lynaela’s liver may have been failing, but her heart was strong and she eventually pulled through.

Months later, this sweet little girl’s mother said: ‘Lynaela is now a strong happy girl full of life, with big smiles. We are grateful for the child who gave the liver. It has impacted our lives, that words cannot describe our grateful hearts.

‘Through all this, we have been staying in [a long-term suite for immune-compromised patients] at the Ronald McDonald House. We are blessed to be here. It is home away from home. It’s like a second home to me... It makes me feel good as a parent.’

Lynaela is featured on our cover
