First Sorrowful Mystery: The Agony In The Garden

not my will, but yours be done.

My Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Last month we completed the last of the Luminous Mysteries, citing the greatest gift Jesus gave us, the Institution of the Eucharist, which took place at the Last Supper on Holy Thursday. Yet we know that following the Last Supper, Holy Thursday would continue with Jesus and his disciples going forth to the Garden of Gethsemane. For Jesus this was to be the beginning of the unimaginable trials Our Lord would face. The first Sorrowful Mystery that covers Our Lord's Passion is The Agony in the Garden. The fruit of this Mystery is “God's Will Be Done.”

The Garden of Gethsemane was located at the base of the Mount of Olives which, despite its name, was more of a hill across the valley from Jerusalem. Jesus was familiar with the location as many of his sermons and miracles took place on the Mount of Olives. Partly down the hill was the Garden of Gethsemane. The word “Gethsemane” (gat shemanim in Hebrew) means olive press. Its name suggests that the garden was a grove of olive trees in which was located an oil press.

The first Sorrowful Mys-tery – the Agony in the Gar-den – emphasizes that Jesus was a human, just as we are, who felt pain and agony, just as we do. All of us at some point may have experienced something that really caused a great deal of pain, some-thing we wish we never had to experience. It is also al-most certain that we prayed to God asking that our ago-ny, whether it be physical or mental, be taken away from us. So too in Gethsemane did Our Lord pray to his Fa-ther that the agony or “cup” would pass him by. The word “cup” had a very strong sig-nificance in the Bible and in Hebrew tradition. Through-out scripture the word “cup”

represented judgment, blessing, redemption and wrath. In this case Jesus prayed that he may be spared of the “cup” of suffering — of having to endure his betrayal, passion and crucifixion which was quickly approaching. He hoped the disciples would provide some support as he anguished, but instead they were fast asleep. Jesus must have felt very much alone.

In the gospel of Luke, it states that when Jesus agonized in Gethsemane, he sweat blood while in prayer. Sweating blood may sound unbelievable, but there actually is a rare medical condition where a person sweats blood under extreme distress or fear of impending suffering or death. While in agony in Gethsemane, Jesus knew that he was facing horrible physical torment, but Jesus also anticipated bearing the guilt of all the sins of mankind as if they were his own. The agony of this was more painful than anything. Although Jesus prayed, My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me, he then added, nevertheless, not my will, but yours

be done. Jesus knew his suffering would not be for nothing. Because of his deep love for us, Jesus acquiesced or gave his “fiat” in the midst of all his agony, just as Mary gave her “fiat” at the time of the Annunciation when she consented to do God's will to bear the Savior of the World. In the Agony in the Garden, Jesus gave his consent to die for the sins of the human race.

During dark times our prayers should not stop with asking God to take away our suffering, but just as Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane, accepting the will of God should be a part. In doing so, our daily lives are filled with grace and are transformed into acts of loving obedience to the Father.

SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS SaintsCyrilandMethodiusweretwoByzantinebrothersborn inThessalonica in the9thcentury. Part of a prominent Christian family, their father wasGreek and theirmother wasBulgarian. In 860 Cyril andMethodius went asmissionaries to what is today the Ukraine,spreadingChristianity among theSlavic peoples of Bulgaria,GreatMoravia andPannonia.TheyarecreditedwithdevisingtheGlagoliticalphabet.AttherequestoftheMoravianprinceRastislav,theybegantotranscribereligiousbooksfromGreekintoOldBulgarian.Theiralphabetis seenas theprecursor toCyrillic,whichwasnamedafterCyril.Todaymost of theSlaviccountries,includingRussia,stilluseanextensionofthatalphabet.Throughouthislife,CyrilwasknownasConstantine,onlyadoptinghisreligiousnameofCyrilwhileonhisdeathbed.In1880,PopeLeoXIIIintroducedtheirfeastintothecalendaroftheRomanCatholicChurch.In1980,PopeJohnPaulIIdeclaredthemco-patronsaintsofEurope,togetherwithBenedictofNursia.

Dearfellowmembers: On February 14th, wecelebrate the Feast Day ofSaints Cyril & Methodius (aswellasValentine’sDay)!Thesetwo saints were brothers whoare known for Christianizingand evangelizing the SlavsandforinfluencingthereligiousandculturaldevelopmentofallSlavicpeoples.Theyareknownas “theApostles to theSlavs.”IencourageyoutouseGoogle

orothersourcestofindoutmoreaboutthem.Itseemstheywerewhatwenowcall“risk-takers”,“influencers”,perhaps“leaders.” Itisquitetrendynowtostudyleadership.Youcanreadthousandsofpagesonaspectsofleadership,butonethingiscertain:ithasbeendefineddifferentlybymany for quite some time.Normally, it takes a longtime for history to judge who has served as a trueleader.Tomany, leadershipstartswith themarksofintegrity: the ability to be truthful,whereactionsareintentionally consistent. One takes responsibility forhisorheractions. Crediblelastingleadersstriveovertimetopracticeintegrity inallaspectsof their lives. It isa tallorder.Wearefortunatethatourfaithistheframeworkforouractionsandprovidesuswiththetoolsthatwecanuseas ourmoral compass over the course of our lives.Theelementsof integrityarecontainedinthismoralcompass.

Ateverydecisionpoint,weneedto lookatwhatour decision will be, act with integrity, assess theconsequences,andthenwemustactwithintegrityinaninformedwayalongthispath.InthiswaywebecomeAUTHENTIC, TRUSTWORTHY, RESPECTED andRESPECTFUL. Fortunately, usually history does not measure and recordthesecharacteristicsinourknownpastleadersovertheyears!

TheChicagoDistrictwentvirtualin2020byinstitutingaseriesofvirtualsalesandbusinessmeetingsandactivities.Withthemajorityofinpersoneventsandmeetingscancelledduetothepandemic,weneededtolookfornewalternativestoconnectwithmembers.Thefirstvirtualsalesmeetingwasheldinmid-June,withMidwestRegionalSalesManagerJimMorsovillo.JimsharedinformationontheimpactofthenewSinglePremiumWholeLifePlusproductonwealthtransfer.This successful first sessionwaswell received andwasfollowedinSeptemberbyanadditionalsalespresentation.FollowingJim’spresentation,thefirsteverChicagoDistrictvirtualbusinessmeetingwasconducted.BranchOfficerswereinvitedtojointhemeetingbyloggingintothe“GotoMeeting”appwhichallowedthemto joinbyvideoor justbyvoice.Participantswithoutcomputersorsmartphonescouldalso join themeetingbycalling in toll freeon theirregular phone.ThefinalDistrict businessmeetingof theyearwasheldinmid-November.Afterthebusinessmeeting,participantswereinvitedtoplayvirtualBingowiththeDistrict.BranchPresidentsweremailedpaperBingocardswhentheyweresenttheregularbusinessmeetingmaterials,andcouldthenfurtherinvitetheirOfficersandmemberstojoinonline.BingoparticipantshadafuntimelisteningfortheirnumberstobecalledandsharinganewversionoftheBingoexperience.WinnershadtheirchoiceofeitheraJewelorAmazongiftcardforeachgamewon.ElevenregulargamesofBingowereplayed,andthesessionendedwithacoverallBingogameenjoyedbyall.

Whiting Branch Celebrates Fall & Giving SocialdistancingandmasksweretherequirementsfortheannualFCSLABranch81appreciation luncheonandfundraiser.ThesettingforourCovidcautiousgatheringwasSunday,November8th,2020attheDynastyBanquetHall.Thoseattendingwereveryhappytobeoutamongfriendstoenjoyanafternoonoffood,fellowship,andfundraising.Members andguests very generously brought gift cardsandmonetarydonations.Theyalsoboughtsharethepotandbasketraffleticketstoraisemoney.Everyoneenjoyedadeliciousluncheon,toppedoffwithpumpkinpieandicecream.Afterwardswesatandlistenedtoourspeakersandannouncedallofourraffleandprizewinners.

DeeYoung,representingtheCarmeliteHomegaveanenlighteningtalkonthebackgroundofthesistersservicingthehome.Shespokeoftheincreasingneedsofthechildrenespeciallywithmore restrictive requirements and safetymeasuresneedingtobemet.Deespokeonhowthesisterstrytomakeeachchildfeelspecialbylettingthemchoosetheirownfashionsandnecessities.BeckyColeman,Branch81Presidentexpressedherdeepappreciation forall thekindnessshowninthedonationsthatwillmeansomuchtothechildren. MaryThereseTyluswas thewinner of our gift cardmysteryprizeandshegenerouslydonated the$50prizebacktothechildren.Althoughsomememberswereunabletoattendtheywerehappytosendadonationtohelpagreatcause.Thankstoeveryone’sheartfeltgivingwewereabletopresentTheCarmeliteHomeforBoysandGirlswith$1543indonations.MatchingFundswillmeananadditional$600forthechildren’shome.Manyweredelightedtoleavewithdoorprizes,centerpieces,rafflebasketsandcashwinnings.In theseuncertain times itwas refreshing tosee familiarfacesgivingushopeofbetterdaysaheadandabeautifulholidayseason.

Asweallknowsowell,lastyear,2020,wasayearunlikeanywe’veseen.SomanyeventswerecanceledinanattempttoreducetheincreaseinCOVID-19infections.Sadly,theseincludedmany of our area’sChristmas gatherings.Ourgroup,theASCA,waslikemanyotherswhohadtoseriouslyconsider cancelingour annual 2020Vilija, the traditionaleasternSlovakChristmasEvemeal.ThismealwasusuallyameatlessmealheldonŠtedrýVečer(ChristmasEve)beforegoingtoMidnightMass.Wewouldhaveourcelebrationonthe2ndSundayofDecemberasawayofbothraisingfundsforour2College/TechSchoolscholarshipsforstudentsofSlovakheritageand,perhapsmostofall,keepingaliveoneofourmostcherishedSlovakcustoms.WewouldhaveatraditionalSlovakdinner,entertainment,abasketraffle,lottotreeand50/50.Wenormallyhadover200attendees. Sadly,thisyearwereallycouldn’tseeanywaythatwecouldhavesomanypeopletogethersowebasicallyhaddecided,likesomanyofthelocalchurchesorotherSlovak,Polish,andRusyngroups,nottohavethedinnerthisyear.IhappenedtomentionthisatmyParishCouncilmeeting(OurLadyofSorrowsParishinYoungstownOhio)inNovemberand our pastor,Rev. JohnJerek, looked at me andimmediatelysaid“Whydon’tyou have the dinner as adrive-thrudinner?” WhenIsaidIdidn’tknowif wewould have a placeto make everything anddistribute the dinners, he immediatelyofferedtohaveus use his rectory kitchenand tohaveusdistribute itfromtherectorygarage!Hesaid that hewould hate tosee thiscustomdisappear.Before you knew it, I hadconsultedwith our officersand we decided to do it!Father offered to providethetakeoutdishesandsoupcontainersandtheuseofhisfreezers,too. Our dinner starts withoplatky(wafers)andhoney,thenweservekapustnica,asauerkraut andmushroomsoup,followedbyfish,peas,andpirohyandendingwithpoppyseedandnutkolače.The oplatkywas obtainedbyourtreasurer,RonGarchar,andweincludedapackofhoneyandawaferwitheachdinner.Ourtreasurer,MaryMargaretHovanes,ordered thekolače,andsheandherfriend,Rick,slicedandpackagedasliceofeachforeach

dinner.MaryMargaret,myhusbandMike(oneofourtrustees)andImade28gallonsofKapustnicaand then Ron, Mike,MaryMargaretandIputit in pint containers, one for eachdinner.Oneofourmembers, MarilynMickholtick,herdaughterSandy Glagola andgrandchildren, Beth (amemberofFCSLAJ169)andRobert,madeover500pirohyplusanother50incaseofbreakage!Mary Margaret , myhusband and I made a littlemorethan300more!We froze these at therectory.And of course,weboughtfishandpeas.Abouttheonlytraditionalthingwedidn’thavewasthebolbalky.Beforeyouknewitwehad125soldandincreaseditto150!Andthatstillwasn’tenough...weendedupselling205andcouldhavesoldat least15ormorebutcouldn’thandleanymore.Allofthedinnerswerepaidforbeforehand.OnSaturday,wepacked225pintsofsoup.Sundaywestartedcookingthepirohyandfishandabout9amwestartedpackingthedinners...apieceoffish,4 pirohy, peas, a pint of soup, oplatky and kolač plus aprintoutofSlovakVilijacustomsandstarteddistributingthedinnersabout12:30pm.Wealsosoldextrasoupandoplatky!Weweretotallythrilledbyallofthepositivecommentswegotandhowhappypeopleweretobeabletotakehomea traditionalVilijadinner for their families.FCSLABr161helpedwith thisdinnerasaMatchingFundsactivityandwewereabletocoverbothofourscholarshipsplusmakeadonationtoFr.JerekforthenewSocialHalltheywillbestartinginthespring!AllIcansayis:

Pope Francis Names Monsignor Larry Kulick of Diocese of Greensburg as Bishop of Greensburg, PA

Pope Francis has appointed our member,MonsignorLarryJamesKulick(S088) as theBishop ofGreensburg.Monsignor Kulick is a priest of theDioceseofGreensburgwhohasbeenservingasDiocesanAdministratorofthediocese sinceSeptember 2020,whenformerBishopEdwardMalesic left tobecomebishopoftheClevelandDiocese.

Bishop-elect Kulick was born onFebruary24,1966 inNatronaHeights,Pennsylvania, and ordained to thepriesthood onMay 16, 1992 for theDiocese of Greensburg. MonsignorKulickgraduatedfromSaintJosephHighSchoolinNatronaHeights.HereceivedaBachelor’sdegreeinPhilosophy(1988)andaMaster’sdegreeinSystematicTheology (1992) fromSaintVincentSeminary inLatrobe,Pennsylvania, andaLicentiate inCanonLaw (JCL) fromTheCatholicUniversityofAmericainWashingtonin2012.

Afterordination,FatherKulickwasassignedtoBlessedSacramentCathedral inGreensburg as parochial vicarwhereheserveduntil1995;hewasassignedasparochialvicaratImmaculateConceptionparishinIrwinfrom1995-1997.In1997,hewasnamedpastoratParishoftheGoodShepherdinKent,whereheserveduntil2002,andpastoratSt.JosephparishinNewKensingtonfrom2002-2008.

From1999-2001,FatherKulickservedonthediocesanPriests’Councilasaconsultantonpriestlyvocations.From2008-2012,heservedasco-episcopalmasterofceremonies,co-directoroftheOfficeofClergyVocationsandco-directorof the Permanent DiaconateOffice for theDiocese ofGreensburg.

Since2012,Bishop-electKulickhasbeenpastorofSaintJamesparish inNewAlexandria,whilealsoservingasajudge,defenderofthebond,andadvocateinthediocesantribunal.Duringthesameperiod,hehasalsoservedasvicargeneral,moderatorof thecuria,andactingchancellor forthediocese.HereceivedthetitleofMonsignorbyhisofficeasVicarGeneraloftheDioceseofGreensburgonMay21,2014.Bishop-electKulick hasalso servedasamemberof theAdministrativeBoard for thePennsylvaniaCatholicConference and as chaplain for theCouncil ofCatholicWomen.

Indeed,thenewbishopcomessteepedinSouthwesternPennsylvania’s small-townCatholic culture.Theeldest offourchildren,KulickgrewupinLeechburgacrossthestreetfromhisSlovakgrandparents.HeattendedtheformerSt.Martha’ s parish, a close-knit congregation that Slovakimmigrants in1911founded in thesmallsteel townalongtheKiskiRiver.Althoughheboastsa28-yearcareerinthepriesthood,including21yearsinchurchadministration,andholdstwomaster’sdegreesaswellasadegreeincanonlaw, thereareothercredentials thatmakehimwell-suitedtoSouthwesternPennsylvania.He brings an endearing

loveof pierogi, pasta,TerribleTowels andclassicPontiacstotheoffice.AndthenthereisthediningroomsethewonandtheBobBarkerautographhescoredon“ThePriceisRight.”As a child Kulick oftenwalkedacrossthestreettowatchtheshowthatwithhisgrandparents.WhenhetraveledtoLosAngeleswithagroupoffellowclergyin2004,hedecidedhecouldn’tleavewithoutseeingthestudiowheretheshowwasfilmed.Whenhelearnedtheyweredistributingticketsforsame-dayshows,hecampedoutovernightbythestudio,gotaticketandwasthesixthcontestantcalleduptoplaythatday.

Stories like that,his loveof the regionknown as SteelersNation, his eagerness to serve thecommunity he knows sowell and tap new technologiestoadvancetheGospelareallpartofthetoolboxKulickiscarryingtohispost.

BerkemeiersearchedforaSlaviklanguagecourseforherdaughterGeraldine,ajunioratPurdueUniversity,inhopesthatGeraldinecouldstudyabroadoverthesummer.WellintothethickoftheCovidvirus,studyabroadtripswerecancelled,butonlinecourseswereontherise.Determinedtofindasuitableonlinecourse,JanetsearchedontheFCSLAwebsiteand noticed information about SAS (StudiaAcademicaSlovaca) ofComeniusUniversity inBratislava,Slovakia,whichledhertospeakwithaprofessorfromSLI(SummerLearningInstitute)fromPittsburghwhichledhertoRenataKameranova,PhD!Renatawasborn inSlovakia,butshemarriedanAmericanandnowresideswithherfamilyinNewHampshire.Renata,whoisconnectedtobothSASandSLIwastheinstructorwhotaughtthisintense2-weekBeginningcourseinSlovak,gearedforcollegelevelonZOOM.

Duringthetwoweeksintensecourse,studentslearnedcasual conversationsandcommonphrases, conjugationsof several verbs, genders of nouns, cultural differences,geography,historyandsomepolitics.Afterthetwoweekswereover,RenatagaveatestonChapters1-2-3.Afterwardonlysix(6)oftheoriginalstudentsstayedonforaweeklyone(1)hourclassandtheypurchasedbooksfromRenata.Additionaltopicslearnedhavebeenpossessives,adjectives,nouns,translating,singingsongs,writing,listeningtoaudio,simpleconversations.Theclasshas lotsofFUN learningtogetherand fromeachother.Theclass isdetermined tocompleteall10chaptersinBook1andBook2ofKrizom–Krazom.

BelleVernonAreaandCalUgraduateSpencerLynn,(S88,Monessen,PA)isneveronetobackawayfromachallenge.Hereadilyadmitsthough,thehurdle,orhurdles,heovercameonhis29thbirthdaywerethemostchallengingofhislife;hecompletedhisfirstfullIronmantriathloninPanamaCityBeach,Florida.

Theeventconsistsofa2.4-mileswim,112-milebikerideandafullmarathon(26.2-milerun)—inthatorder.

Lynn completed the eventwithin 12 hours, 22minutesand2seconds.Hewasinthetop28%ofmenintheevent,finishing259thoutof912.Overall,hewasinthetop27%,checkingin324thoutof1,177competitors.

“IhaveanactualbucketlistinanoldnotebookandanIronmanwasonmylist,”Lynnsaid.“Ithinkwantingtodo itwentback tomydays inhighschoolwhen IsawitonESPN.Ithinkit’sthehardestthingahumancandosoI’vealwaysplannedforit.Itjustworkedoutbecausewith(COVID-19),it’stheperfectsportforthistime.You’renotaroundanyone.”

BeforehecouldcrosstheIronmanoffhisbucketlist,Lynnhadadifferentkindofdutytogetoutoftheway.

Thismonth, U.S. Army 1st Lt. Spencer Lynncompletedhisservicewith the25thInfantryDivisionatSchofieldBarracksontheHawaiianislandofOahu.

“I knew this Ironmanwas the one because thetimelinefit.I’dbeoutoftheArmyandhavetimetodoit,”Lynnsaid.“Withthevirus,itwastheonlyfullIronmanbeingheld.Itwasperfect.”

The Most Reverend Edward C.Malesic,(S088),wasinstalledasthe12thbishop ofCleveland onMonday,Sept.14,2020.Inhisownwords,hewokeupasthe5thBishopGreensburgandwenttobedasthe12thBishopofCleveland.Congratulations to ourmemberBishopMalesic.

BishopMalesicwas bornAug. 14,1960,inHarrisburgtoJosephA.andthelateElizabethSchattMalesic.HewasrearedinEnhaut,whichadjoinsthefactorytownofSteelton,nearHarrisburg.Heisoneoffoursiblings.Twoaredeceased:Joseph,Jr.andMargaretR.Malesic.Hisone surviving brother,Robert, lives inHummelstown,Pennsylvania,withhiswifeConstance.Hisfather,102yearsold, isstillquiteactiveandresidesnearHershey,Pennsylvania.

BishopMalesic received the sacraments of initiationathishometownparishinEnhaut,theformerSt.JohntheEvangelistParish,whichwasaGermannationalparish.HismotherwasofGermandescentandhisfatherisofSloveniandescent.

BishopMalesicisa1978graduateofCentralDauphinEastHighSchool,Harrisburg,andattendedLebanonValleyCollegeinAnnvilleasabiologymajorforthreeyearspriortoenteringtheseminary.

In1981hewasacceptedintotheseminaryprogramatthePontificalCollegeJosephinuminColumbus,Ohio,wherehereceivedabachelorofartsdegreeinphilosophyin1983.HecontinuedhistheologicalstudiesattheJosephinumandwasawardedamasterofdivinitydegreein1987.

BishopWilliamH.Keeler,thenthebishopofHarrisburg,ordainedhimtothediaconateonMay24,1986,andtothepriesthoodonMay30, 1987, atSt.PatrickCathedral inHarrisburg.

BishopMalesicservedinvariouspastoralassignmentsintheDioceseofHarrisburg.HewastheassistantpastorofSt.TheresaParish,NewCumberland(1987-89);andtheassistantpastorofSt.RoseofLimaParish,York(1989-92).WhileinYorkhealsoservedastheCatholiccampusministerofYorkCollegeofPennsylvania.

Hewasappointedtofull-timecampusministryin1992andservedforfouryearsatMillersvilleUniversity.In1993hewasalsoappointedtocampusministryatFranklinandMarshallCollegeinnearbyLancaster,PA.

In 1996, Bishop Nicholas C. Dattilo sent him tostudycanon lawatTheCatholicUniversityofAmerica inWashington,D.C.BishopMalesicreceivedhislicentiateincanonlawin1998andservedtheDioceseofHarrisburg’sTribunal in various capacities, includingauditor, adjutant

judicial vicar and secretary for canonicalservices.Hewasappointed judicial vicarin2006,apositionheheldwhenhewasnamed bishop of Greensburg. He is amember of the Canon Law Society ofAmerica.

He resided at St. Margaret MaryParish in Harrisburg (1996-2000) andat St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish inMechanicsburg (2000-04).While livinginMechanicsburg, BishopMalesic alsoservedthespiritualneedsofthestudentsofMessiahCollegeinDillsburg.

OnApril1,2004,BishopMalesicwasappointed toHoly Infant Parish in York

Havenasadministrator;hewasappointedpastorthereDec.22,2004.Heguidedtheparishfor11yearsandoversawtherelocationandinitialconstructionofanewchurchandparishcenter,whichwascompletedin2016.

In theDioceseofHarrisburg,BishopMalesic servedonthefollowingboards,committeesandorganizations:theContinuingFormation ofClergyCommittee;SeminarianReviewBoard; Diocesan Presbyteral Council; Collegeof Consultors; Bishop’s Administrative Board; and theYouthProtectionCommitteeof thePennsylvaniaCatholicConference(PCC).HealsoservedontheBoardofHospiceofCentralPennsylvania.

AsBishopofGreensburg,hewasamemberoftheBoardofGovernorsofthePCC.HealsoservesontheBoardsofSaintVincentSeminaryandSaintVincentCollege(Latrobe),SetonHillUniversity (Greensburg), and is amember ofChristianAssociatesofSouthwestPennsylvania.
