Enabling TechnologySAP’s system landscape has been grown over decades with a strong OnPrem core. Over the last couple of years, we have moved capabilities into the cloud, leveraging acquired assets. That has led to fasterinnovationcyclesandmoreprocessstandardizationandsimplificationincommodityareas.Inparallel,wehavestartedtoleveragetheSAPCloudPlatformtorapidlyimprovetheuserexperience,toembedcontinuousinnovations(e.g.MachineLearning)intoexistinghybridlandscapesandtoleverageitforuser-centricdifferentiatingsalesapps.

Inordertosupportemergingbusinessmodelsthattransform SAP into a cloud company (growth) but at the same time contribute to a massive increase in operationalefficiencies(costsavings),wedecidednottojustconvertourERPsystemtoS/4HANA,buttoinsteadstartwithagreenfieldapproach.Ledbybusinessprocess redesign triangulated with S/4HANA application capabilities, we designed the new digital core for SAP.

The OnPrem core becomes small and further capabilities move to the cloud, such as salesforce automation, configure-price-quoteandcommissionsmanagement.Inordertostandardizeandsimplify,weworkcloselywithSAPProductandInnovationDevelopmentteamsonfunctionalandintegrationgaps.Weestablishedaco-innovationmodelwhereITisdrivingrequirementsinto

development to create a reference architecture valid for allcustomersofsimilarsizeandindustry.IntegrationtoCloud “satellites” (Ariba, Concur, FG, SFSF) has already significantlyimproved,andfunctionalenhancementsinFinance(Accrualcockpit,IntercompanyBilling,RoyaltiesManagement ) are being co-developed.

At SAP, the end goal is to arrive at a service-oriented architecture with a lean OnPrem Core and connected cloudservicesthatcanbeflexiblyexchanged.Thiswillprovide agility to support new business or commercial modelsandestablishacorethatisrobustandflexibleenoughtocarrySAPintothenextdecadeandsupportfuture growth. Plus, we leverage emerging technologies likeMachineLearningwithinITspecificsolutionstocreateadditionalbusinessbenefits.

SAP had long employed a variety of small analytics groupswithinthecompany.One,calledInsight-DrivenMarketing, focused on marketing analytics. Other groups existedwithinFinance,HumanResources,andSales.There was relatively little contact and collaboration among these groups. However, this approach often resultedindifficultiesconsolidatingreportsandresultsacross functions and units.

Byfall2014,SAPexecutivesagreedthatamoreenterprisefocusandaunifiedanalyticsorganizationwere necessary. Not only could these consolidation problems be addressed, but the company could also employ more innovative and predictive analytics capabilitieswithacombinedorganization,andrespondto the challenges and opportunities of big data. So the SAPEnterpriseAnalyticsorganizationwascreated.

Bringingthesede-centralizedanalyticalgroupstogetherto work as one, while also informing a singular technical platform as their single source of truth will be bearing fruit shortly. Enterprise Analytics recently launched a cross-business program called “The Digital Boardroom,” which integrates real-time, cross-business metrics for a full business view that SAP will use internally as well as bring to market through their co-innovation approach.
