Few things are more exciting to a sixteen year old than the thought of waking up to find a brand-new car in the driveway. Of course as a parent, you want to make those dreams a reality, but what are the best ways to go about purchasing a car that will be cool enough for a teen, yet safe enough for mom and dad? Here is a comprehensive guide to what to look for in safety features, amenities, insurance and financing. According to the website www.firstcarguide.com, the Honda Civic is the top choice for teens when considering a new car. The Toyota Corolla comes in a close second. Why are these cars so popular with young drivers? The Civic is small yet roomy, having room for up to four people. It’s an economical choice, as Civics are priced relatively low, low insurance rates (even for notoriously expensive-to-insure teen drivers,) and the maintenance and upkeep on Hondas is very reasonable as well. Both the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla are easy to maintain, fuel efficient, and if taken care of, have a high resale value. What do teenagers want in their first car? Of course, the number one answer is “it has to be cool.” What does that mean, exactly? I asked my 15-year-old nephew Hunter, who will soon be in the market for a car, what he would want. His first answer was some Italian sports car that I have neither heard of or can pronounce, but after I pressed him to be realistic – he told me that he would like a Dodge Challenger. Why? “It’s fast and loud.” I would assume that to a 15-year-old boy, fast and loud = cool. My 11-year-old daughter is a few years away from her first car, but she already knows what she wants – a Volkswagen Beetle convertible. That makes me smile, because at her age, that was the exact answer I would’ve given. Why is a Beetle such an appealing car for teens? “It’s small, and cute, and has a flower vase.” Of course, parents have a very different set of criteria to decide what’s important for a teen’s first car. For most moms and dads, the number one factor in making this decision is safety features. No one likes to imagine that their child will someday be in an automobile accident, but it’s an unfortunate fact that teenagers have a higher likelihood of having a serious car wreck than any other age group. The combination of impulsiveness, distractibility and inexperience make driving as a teen a dangerous undertaking. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety states that “Teenagers should drive vehicles that reduce their chances of a crash and offer state-of-the-art
protection in case they do crash.” The Insurance Institute for Highway safety and the National Highway and Transportation Safety both do crash testing on various types of cars, and this information is available, along with a 23 page brochure called “Buying a Safer Car” at www.nhtsa.dot.gov. Another huge factor in choosing a car for a young person is financing. While it may seem like purchasing a used car is a good way to cut costs, the truth is that it’s nearly impossible to know how a previous owner treated their vehicle. When you purchase a new car, you can be assured that any problems that should occur with the car will be covered under a warranty or a “Lemon Law.” New cars will have the very latest developments in technology and safety features, while an older model may have problems that you’re not aware of. It’s important to keep in mind that owning a car is not just about making the monthly payments, but there are all kinds of costs associated with car ownership. For example, gas will run the average driver about $80-$100 a month, and insurance for teenagers is usually much more costly than that for adults. Insurance may seem like an unnecessary expense to a sixteen year-old, but it is important because it protects the entire family
from the risk of financial hardship in the event of an accident, from personal injury and property damage, and loss from fire, theft or natural disasters. Before a new car purchase is made, it is a good idea to sit down with your teen and decide who will be responsible for the cost of gas, for insurance payments, and for maintenance costs such as oil changes and tune-ups. Teens need to learn that driving is a privilege and not a right – and with privilege comes responsibility. Many banks and lenders offer special financing options for first time car purchasers – it’s a good idea to check with your own bank as well as to ask about financing options through the car dealership. It might be a good idea to co-sign for a loan for your child, in order to let her start building her credit at a young age. Whatever choices you and your family make for your son or daughter’s first car, there are a lot of important points to consider. It may seem hard to balance what your teen wants with what you’re looking for in a first car, but with a little compromise, this can be a joyous time for everyone involved.

QA with new car owner, Bayli hanlein, age 16&
Q. What kind of car did you get, and where was it purchased?A. I got a 2011 Mazda 3 from North Point Mazda.Q. Did you pick it out, or did your parents?A. Well, we were all at the dealership together, and I liked the car. It had all of the features that my parents were looking for, so we got it that day.Q. What kind of things were they looking for in a first car for you?A. They wanted me to have a Bluetooth headset, so I wouldn’t have to use my phone; they wanted me to have lots of airbags, and also controls for the radio on the steering wheel.Q. And what features were important to you?A. I wanted an auxiliary input for music, a good stereo, controls for the stereo on the steering wheel, and cruise control. I also wanted a car with good gas mileage, because gas is expensive.Q. Are you responsible for paying for your own gas? How about car payments and insurance?A. I do pay for my gas, as well as my monthly car payments. My parents traded in my dad’s car for the down payment, and they pay for my insurance. Q. Do your parents have any rules as far as when and where you can drive? A. Well, right now I’m not allowed to drive with my friends in the car. I don’t really have any restrictions on where and when I can drive, but since I pay for my own gas I try not to drive a whole lot. I work at my dad’s restaurant, so if I have to work late, I am allowed to drive home late.

James miLLer – gwatney chevroLetOur slogan at Gwatney Chevrolet is that our used cars are “Good Enough for Mom!” What this means to our customers is that we put brand-new tires on every car, new brake pads, we give it a tune up. Everything about the car will be good enough for your mom to drive. If you’re looking for a reliable, trustworthy first car for your teenager, Gwatney is the place for you.
shan russeLL – russeLL hondaThe Honda Civic is a really popular car with teenagers because there are so many different models to choose from. There is a hybrid model, a two-door and a four-door basic Civic, as well as a really sporty Si model. The reason they’re so appealing to teenagers, I think, is that there are so many cool features – all of the 2012 models have iPod inputs standard, and also a customizable screen that drivers can upload their own wallpapers or pictures to. It’s really a fun car!
wes thomas – north point toyotaNorth Point Toyota has a few programs that make it a great place to buy a first car. We have a first-time buyer incentive program, a recent college graduate program which is ideal for those with little or no credit and no cosigner, and we also offer financing options through I-Finance. For teenagers wanting to build their credit for the first time, we have an option that allows a parent or head of household with established credit to cosign, while keeping the credit reports in the child’s name.

“You don’t want to see someone you love in pain,” Katherine Davis, 20, said.
When Katherine was in the 8th grade she and her sister, Allison, learned their mother had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. “I didn’t know much about it,” Katherine explained, “and I wanted to do something to help.” Allison recalled being at camp when she learned of her mother’s diagnosis. “She was supposed to come and pick me up but she couldn’t. It was heartbreaking.”
Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease.
Katherine and Allison wanted to learn more about MS and how it would affect their family. “We had a good support system,” Katherine recalled. “I confided in my teachers at Episcopal Collegiate and they really encouraged me to get involved with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. I got in my mind I was going to do it!”
The following year Katherine and Allison participated in a local Walk MS event. “We got eight friends to join us and walk in honor of our mom,” Katherine said. The year after that the girls started a Walk MS team at Episcopal Collegiate School, they gave chapel talks to their classmates to tell their story and get their peers to participate. “Chapel talks are pretty intimidating as a sophomore,” Katherine explained.
The girls set up a coin drive at the school and called it “Give It Up For MS”. Katherine explained that the coin drive became a competition between the grades to see which class could raise the most change. To date, the girls have raised a little more than $4,000 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
“It’s been awesome meeting others going through the same things we are,” Allison said. “It feels good to know so many people appreciate our involvement and to know that we can help other families like ours.” Katherine agreed, explaining your actions don’t have to be big to make an impact.
“There isn’t a day that goes by when mom doesn’t tell us she’s proud of us,” Katherine said. “She’s always been very supportive.”
If you would like to help Katherine and Allison Davis in their efforts to raise money and
awareness for Multiple Sclerosis, visit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s website:

A student’s ability to achieve their academic dreamstomorrow requires building a strong foundation andconfidence in their ability today. Kumon can helpall children fulfill their potential by motivating themto achieve more independently.
The Kumon Math and Reading Centers of NorthLittle Rock assists students who are struggling inschool and need to catch up, as well as those whowant to advance. Designed for students from pre-school to college level, Kumon helps childrenmaster skills in math and reading according to theirown ability level.
“My child has improved in her skills and confidencemore than I ever expected,” says Robin Scott ofSherwood, “Kumon was the best choice I made formy child.”
Parents around the world have turned to the KumonMethod since its development in 1958. Millions ofstudents have benefited from the after-schoolenrichment program, which promotes independentstudy for all ages and abilities.
Students begin the Kumon program at acomfortable starting point and work independentlyon daily worksheets that follow a naturally coherentlogical progression. To build confidence and self-learning skills, children advance at their own pacein the Kumon curriculum. Most students attend theKumon Math and Reading Center twice a week, allyear round, and complete brief daily assignmentson their own the other days of the week.
Students learn to achieve 100 percent accuracy ineach concept before learning a new one and movingahead to the next level. Mastery of each newconcept ensures children are confidant in theirability. In addition to helping students grasp the
basics and build a strong academic foundation, thedaily timed assignments enable students to developkey time management and problem-solving skillsand become accustomed to working under test-takingconditions.
Kumon also offers Junior Kumon preschoolers andkindergartners. Junior Kumon is an early educationprogram designed to motivate and help three to sixyear olds prepare for their first academic challengesin reading and math.
As a fully interactive program, children workclosely with a trained Kumon assistant who instillspositive reinforcement, constant attention andinstruction with each session. Children areintroduced to basic skills required to learn math andreading, and can enable them to develop thenecessary pre-numeracy and pre-literacy skills.
Kumon of North Little Rock is open on Mondaysand Thursdays from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and is locatedat 4810 West Commercial Drive in North LittleRock. For more information or to schedule acomplimentary placement test, call center directorand instructor, Kate Makan at 508-812-KIDS(5437).

Set the rules. Control the privilege. Be a “road” model.
A parent’s guide to sAfe teen drivingBy Holly Jones Choate, MPH, Teen Driving Parent Education CoordinatorBy Mary Porter, BA, Teen Driving Program Manager Is your teen normal? Is any teen normal? This is what we know about normal teens. They are moody. They give in to peer pressure. They take risks. How does this play out when your normal teen is also a teen driver? Here are some shocking facts about teens behind the wheel. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for 14-18 year olds in the United States, and in Arkansas the number of teens who die in car crashes is higher than the national average. Learning to drive is a big step toward becoming an adult, but let’s face it, teens are not adults! They need extra driving rules and supervised driving practice to keep them safe behind the wheel. These are a few tips to keep teen drivers safe.
set the rulesIt is important to set your own house rules and consequences for breaking those rules. Teens should learn that driving is a privilege to be earned and it is not freely given. We advise writing a driving contract with your teen. This will give you and your teen something to refer back to when granting additional privileges or enforcing consequences. Also, know the driving
risks and laws that affect teens. State laws are minimum requirements, and parents can and should have stricter rules than the laws. This is especially true for brand new drivers because they are more likely to crash due to inexperience. The Arkansas law says that a teen with their intermediate license may have one friend in the car with them without an adult present; however, teens are more likely to crash when just one other teen is in the car. Knowing this, your house rule may be zero passengers for the first six months without an adult being present in the car. Remember that setting rules isn’t easy, but saving lives rarely is.
Control the PrivilegeFor each rule in the driving contract there should be a written and specific consequence for breaking the rule. Enforcing rules and consequences may mean that the teen loses the privilege of driving for a day, a week or a month, depending on the severity of the rule broken. If that’s the case, think long and hard about what kind of statement you’re making if you allow your teen to
run to the grocery store because you need a gallon of milk. Also, don’t relax the driving rules during summer break. Research shows that the summer months have the highest numbers of teenage crash deaths than any other time of year, and a high percentage of those crashes occur at night and on the weekend. Remember, enforcement begins at home, and making teen drivers follow state laws and house rules might just save their lives.
Driving Contracts can be found at http://www.underyourinfluence.org/ParentTeenContracts.html.
Be A good roAd ModelTeens learn their driving skills from you! They watch you, mimic your actions, and yes, they even listen to you. It’s vital that you model good driving behavior for your teen. Two big behaviors to model are wearing your seat belt and turning off the cell phone! If you minimize your distractions and obey traffic laws, there’s a good chance that your teen will, too.
Know the Risks*
and Laws**
AgeRisk: Mile for mile, teenagers are involved in three times as many fatal crashes as all other drivers.Arkansas Law: A teen may obtain a learner’s license at ages 14-15, an intermediate license at ages 16-17, and a full license at age 18.
SeAt BeLt USeRisk: In 2008, more than half of the teens killed in motor vehicle crashes were not wearing their seat belt. Arkansas Law: The primary seat belt law states that any driver and front seat passenger can be pulled over and ticketed for not wearing a seat belt.
CeLL Phone/otheR eLeCtRoniC DeviCe USeRisk: Talking, texting, or using any electronic device while driving is a serious risk for teen drivers, forcing them to take their eyes and mind off the road and at least one hand off the steering wheel. Arkansas Law: Teen drivers ages 14-17 are not allowed to use cell phones, smart phones, or other electronic devices while driving for any reason other than an emergency. Texting and driving is illegal for all drivers.
nighttime DRivingRisk: Four out of every ten crash deaths occur at night.Arkansas Law: Teen drivers with an intermediate license are prohibited from driving between the hours of 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. unless accompanied by a licensed adult age 21 or older, or if driving to or from a school activity, church-related activity, or job.
PASSengeRSRisk: Teen drivers with two or more teen passengers increase the chance of a fatal crash by five times.Arkansas Law: Teen drivers with an intermediate license are prohibited from having more than one unrelated minor passenger in the vehicle unless accompanied by a licensed adult age 21 or older.

Buying a First Car For your teenager What EvEry ParEnt Should KnoW
By Paige Hunter Parham
juLY 2011 savvy kids | 15

The area's best water parksBy Emily Griffin
Don’t let the hot weather keep you from having a cool summer! There are many local water parks full of excitement, fun, and clear, cool water just waiting for you. Savvy Kids asked readers what they think are the best water parks in central Arkansas. Below are the top five chosen, along with the information you need to plan a family visit.
MAKE A
Magic Springs and Crystal Falls
juLY 2011 savvy kids | 17
Get set to get wet this summer at Splash Zone! With huge waterslides, crazy fountains, and cool water your kids are sure to have fun in the sun! Located in Pleasure Park in Jacksonville, the Splash Zone has a three pool layout and offers recreation, exercise and fun for all ages! Splash Zone has a play pool that goes from zero to 2 ½ feet with a play structure for children under 48 inches. The 25-yard pool, which goes from 4-11 feet, incorporated a diving board and a massage bench with Jacuzzi jets. The park also has a slide pool with a 24-foot and 26-foot slide for people who are 48 inches or taller. A concession stand is on hand, and lockers are available to store your belongings. You can also book birthday parties at the Splash Zone. Admission is $4 and children under the age of 2 are admitted FREE! The slide is $1. Season passes are also available. 501-982-SWIM (7946)
Located west of the Junction Bridge near the River Market in Little Rock lies Peabody Park, a unique play environment made possible by a generous contribution from the Peabody Hotel Group. Designed with help from children, it encourages imagination, exploration and discovery. Some of its many wondrous features include several outdoor and underground tunnels, large native stones for climbing, large slide, and the Ozark Pavilion. One feature in particular, the large spray pad, has become a favorite among visitors. Those kids just learning to toddle around to those who are still kids at heart will love the spray pad! Water shoots up from the ground in different patterns—kids get a kick out of guessing where it will shoot up from next! The spray pad is made of a soft rubbery surface to help prevent injury in case a child should fall. There is no charge to use the park. Savvy Tip: It is recommended that your child wear water shoes while playing at the park. Kids will want to play in the water, and then run through the tunnels. Some sort of footwear will help prevent booboos during the play process.
Grab your swim suits and get ready to hit the cool crystal clear water at Wild River Country. Located on Crystal Hill Road in North Little Rock, Wild River Country is full of exciting water slides, a huge wave pool and some shallow water attractions for young kids. The park has a picnic area, so pack a lunch and spend the day! Ticket prices start at $13.99 and children ages two and under are admitted FREE! Discounts are also available on their website: wildrivercountry.com.
Built in 1928, Willow Springs is Little Rock’s original water park. Willow Springs is a sandy bottom spring and well fed lake. The water is chemically treated, chlorinated, and pH balanced. Be sure to check out the 400-foot waterslide, new kiddy pool and playground area, two log roll and water trampolines. Engage in a game of water basketball, volleyball, and tetherball. The park is located off I-530 on Willow Lake Road in Little Rock. Ticket prices start at $7.50 and children ages three and under are admitted FREE! Cupcake OHH!-Veralls are the yummiest cupcake cos-tumes ever and were designed with girls and boys in
mind. Time, patience and craftsmanship are just a few of the special ingredients used in the creation of each costume. Your child may choose the traditional, sweet-looking cupcakes topped with jimmies and sprinkles, or desire the more whim-sical cupcake designs such as the Spaghetti and Meatballs, the Sunflower, or the Alien Spaceship!
Cupcake OHH!-Veralls are especially fun to share at Halloween! Brothers and sisters alike can choose a theme or coordinating fabric and dress up together! However, think “outside the cupcake wrapper” and consider the endless possibilities!
Penny Beebe, the creator and inspiration of Cupcake OHH!-Veralls, has been creating costumes for her own children, as well as for the children of many friends across the country for years. Cupcake OHH!-Veralls blos-somed into a business based on a cupcake design for a little client who lives in Ohio. It was such a hit that family and friends encouraged her to move forward and pursue her dream of owning her own business. “I have found this is where my passion lies,” Penny said. Cupcake OHH!-Veralls is a one-of-a-kind creation...it’s the only one in the nation!
She explained that many of her clients request custom designs. “They give me a theme or basic idea and then we start brainstorming.” The most popular designs have been the Spaghetti and Meatballs, Tutu Cute, and A Hunt-ing We Will Go. Penny is currently working on a design for Arkansas football season, and a few other inspired designs as well.
Penny currently resides in Little Rock and holds a degree in Interior Design. She is a mother of two children who are now grown and attending the University of Arkansas. “Creativity is something God has blessed me with. Whether it’s decorating someone’s home, hosting a party, running a volunteer event or staging a gradua-tion party, I have always given 100% and have truly enjoyed every aspect of accomplishing the task at hand,” she explained.
Her passion for creative and unique costumes has provided joy to children all across America. Whether it’s a birthday party, wedding, holiday show, school event, Sunday School program, or, of course, Halloween, I’m sure you’ll agree that Cupcake OHH!-Veralls would be a “sweet” addition to any event!

Summer’s almost over! Don’t let it pass by without taking a family vacation! While money may be tight for most families, you can save a bundle by vacationing close to home (like, right here…at home!). You don’t have to go far or spend lots of money to have an unforgettable vacation; you just need to spend your vacation together.
While many of us think that escaping to some exotic beach far, far from home is the only way to go, there are plenty of places you can go to have tons of fun. We have heard about these places before, and have probably driven by them hundreds of times without ever stopping in. Now’s the time! Below are a few vacation hot spots to consider this year, as well as some family friendly attractions to check out while you’re there!

OzARK MOUNTAIN REGIONNestled in the rugged Ozark hills, you will find what has become known as the Twin Lakes area in north central Arkansas. At the center is Mountain Home. Every family will have a blast splishing and splashing in the cool, clear waters of Bull Shoals and Norfork lakes, or fishing and floating the White and Buffalo National Rivers. The breathtaking beauty of the Ozarks will make you want to stay there forever.
OzARK MEDIEVAL FORTRESS A short drive west of Mountain Home, you’ll find the Ozark Medieval Fortress, a U.S. castle in the making.
In front of visitors, authentically dressed masons, carpenters, stone carvers and dedicated artisans will work for the next 20 years raising a genuine, full-sized, fortified castle with towers ranging from 40-70 feet in height, a drawbridge, and stone walls which surround an expansive inner courtyard. Artisans using tools, techniques, and rules from 700 years ago, recreate the Middle Ages in Europe in a green environment: no electricity, no engines, just bare hands and the natural resources of the site. Join in the fun, take a tour, and watch a real castle being built! 870-436-7625; www.ozarkmedievalfortress.com
BUFFALO RIVER CANOPY TOUR The Buffalo Outdoor Center is home to Arkansas’ first zipline canopy tour! From a structural standpoint, the canopy tour is a system of cables and platforms, wherein the participant “glides” or “zips” through the treetops while connected to the cable via a harness. A large wooden platform serves as a landing base in each tree that you “zip to.” Tours are open Thursday-Monday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Reservations are required. Tickets are $89 per person, and group discounts are available for groups of eight or more. 800-221-5514; www.buffaloriver.com
SILVER HILL FLOAT SERVICE Near the heart of the Buffalo National River you will find Silver Hill Float Service. Throughout the year, Silver Hill offers canoeing, rafting, kayaking, tubes and shuttle services on the nation’s first National River. 870-439-2372; www.silverhillcanoe.com
QUARRY MARINA Fun on the water starts with Quarry Marina! Located on Lake Norfork in Mountain Home, you will find every thing you need to enjoy the lake. From pontoon rentals, live bait and tackle, wake and knee boards, skis and tubes, guide service, snacks, swim gear and more, your family will love the convenience of Quarry Marina. 870-499-5388; www.quarrymarina.com

Arkansas Geocaching Geocaching is a fast-growing hobby with enthusiasts around the globe. It combines technology with nature to produce an exciting new form of entertainment for those who like to be adventurous in their leisure time. In this modern-day treasure hunt, caches are hidden all over the world by individuals or groups. The location of each geocache is marked with Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates which are shared via the Internet. Enthusiasts use a hand-held GPS unit to hunt for the caches. Each hunt and the terrain around it vary in difficulty. Some caches contain only log books in small tins or film canisters, while others hold mini treasures inside containers such as ammo boxes. Standard geocaching protocol is to take something if you leave something. The rewards for finding the geocache are much more than the material goods found inside. There’s the satisfaction of an accomplished quest as well as the joy of experiencing the locale.
Test your cache-seeking skills in some of The Natural State’s scenic and historic settings. Arkansas State Parks are treasures all their own, where visitors can discover waterfalls, caves, wildlife, diamonds and trails amid diverse terrain and picturesque landscapes. Caches can also be found at some Arkansas wineries, in the middle of downtown areas or other public venues.
In honor of the 70th anniversary of the National Great River Road, a series of geocaches were placed in the 10 counties in Arkansas that border the historic byway. The special caches are located at historic locations in Lake Village, Arkansas City, Jerome, St. Charles, Helena-West Helena, Brinkley, Marianna, Forrest City, Horseshoe Lake and Wilson.
For coordinates and geocaching details, go to www.geocaching.com. This official Web site provides information on caches in Arkansas and around the world.
More than 4,800 geocaches are hidden in Arkansas. So, grab your GPS and discover some of the wonders of The Natural State. But, be warned, Arkansas geocaching is addictive.
Rowdy Adventures – Life’s Short…Have Fun!Looking for a day trip with tons of adventure in one place? Head up to Okolona to Rowdy Adventures for the most amazing adventure park Arkansas has ever seen! Rowdy Adventures features 15 zip lines, over 300 acres of wilderness ready to be explored, an air boat ride, and a monster truck transport! Additionally, we hear there is a military transport with a secret too big to talk about! You’ll have to see for yourself! The zip line tours are appropriate for those weighing 75-300 lbs., although it is possible to accommodate smaller passengers with the help of a guide. Rates start at $29.95 per person and vary based on the activities you choose to take part in. Plans for refreshments are underway, but there is a picnic area available for public use. Visit www.rowdyadventures.com or call (870) 274-3001 for more information.

the Deathly Hallows, Part II
With three of Voldemort’s six horcruxes
destroyed, Harry, Ron and Hermione
must find the rest. One of them is a
fabled Cup that once belonged to
Helga Hufflepuff, one of the founders
of Hogwarts, but the other two
remain mysteries. They deduce both
Gringotts and Hogwarts are likely
hiding places, but will the mystical
yet real Deathly Hallows prove to
be a crucial part in the unfolding of
events? Lord Voldemort has gained
possession of the all-powerful Elder
Wand, strengthening him further, but
who really is its true master? Did the
fateful events of 16 years ago have
even more impact than Harry thought? All of these questions must be answered
for ultimate Battle of Hogwarts, where the final showdown between Harry and the
Dark Lord will determine the fate of both the wizarding and muggle worlds for the
rest of eternity. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley continue their
search for Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes, which ultimately leads up to an epic battle at
Hogwarts.

July 15 • Winnie the Pooh
Walt Disney Animation Studios returns to the Hundred Acre Wood with ‘Winnie the
Pooh.’ Featuring the timeless charm, wit and whimsy of the original featurettes, this
all-new movie reunites audiences with the philosophical “bear of very little brain”
and friends Tigger, Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, Kanga, Roo--and last, but certainly not least,
Eeyore, who has lost his tail. “Ever have one of those days where you just can’t win,
Eeyore?” asks Pooh. Owl sends the whole gang on a wild quest to save Christopher
Robin from an imaginary culprit. It turns out to be a very busy day for a bear who
simply set out to find some honey.

Thousands of people made a stop at
Riverfest to see some great entertain-
ers, taste some delicious food, and
participate in fun activities! River-
fest is a celebration of visual and
performing arts that is held annually
over Memorial Day weekend on the
banks of the Arkansas River in Little
Rock and North Little Rock. Riverfest
is the largest single event in the state
of Arkansas with a rich 34-year tradi-
tion. This year the Yarnell’s Family
Stage and KidZone had some great
family entertainment including Trout
Fishing in America, Monster Shop
Bumpn’, The Kazoobie Kazoo Show
with Rick Hubbard, and Luke Schild-
knecht. Little Rock School of Dance
and the I Can! Dancers were also on
hand to show off their skills to the
crowds. The Teen Extreme Gaming
Area offered Kinect on XBOX for
those willing to take a gaming chal-
lenge! The weekend was brought
to a close by the always spectacular
Osborne Family Fireworks Show.

PoP Tab PandemoniumPhoToS bY JAY WhiTE
Schools, companies, individuals and
community organizations, worked
together to raise money for the
Ronald McDonald house Charities of
Arkansas during Pop Tab Pandemo-
nium, a program which turns pop
tabs into cash for the non-profit. Each
group weighed in the pop tabs they
had collected at the Clinton Library
to compete for bragging rights. This
year’s winner was Greene County
Tech Elementary in Paragould,
weighing in with 190 pounds of pop
tabs. A total of 4,300 pounds were
collected, which equates to almost
$3,500 for RMhC. The next Pop Tab
Pandemonium event will be held on
April 19 at the Clinton Library so start
collecting now! For more information,
visit rmhclittlerock.org.

SAVVY PROJECT
When you’re a kid, there is nothing quite as refreshing on a hot summer day than playing in the water! Add some homemade water toys to the mix for a fun twist! These water bombs are made on only two inexpensive household items but can turn into some priceless fun! Play tag with these homemade water bombs…where ever they land, they will explode water!
Items you will need:Three sponges (make sure they are soft on all sides, not course for scrubbing)Zip ties
Directions:Cut the sponges lengthwise four times, making four even-sized pieces. Next, lay your zip tie flat on a table and stack the cut sponge pieces on top. Then, grab the ends of your zip tie and fas-ten them as tightly as you can in the middle of the sponge pieces. Cut off the remainder of the zip tie to prevent injury. Finally, spread out the sponge pieces to form a ball shape (see picture).
Note: You can cut the sponges into more or fewer pieces if you wish. Try mixing and matching sponge colors for a fun one-of-a-kind toy!
