As the first French tertiary-level department in Australia, we have been teaching the French language since 1853. Our unique study offerings will give you linguistic and cultural expertise, and the opportunity to study abroad at one of our partner universities in France, Switzerland, and Canada.

Understanding and appreciating a different culture and communicating with its members requires thorough knowledge. We believe that this can only be achieved by learning the language in its cultural context, thus informing our range of language and culture subjects.

Our syllabus equips you with a distinct advantage in professional fields such as international relations, commerce, journalism, teaching, law, the arts, as well as a range of NGOs.

French and Francophone Studies at the University of Sydney

The Department Our curriculumWe offer introductory, intermediate and advanced pathways in language studies for fresh new learners to near-native speakers, and anyone who falls in between.

We use authentic French language material and contemporary methods of teaching, incorporating a wide use of technology.

Most classes are conducted in French to help you develop fluency in the language while increasing your understanding of the Francophone culture and its people.

Our cultural units of study give a broad overview of modern France and specific issues facing Francophone societies.

Student experience—

The well-varied culture units in the French major have provided a unique multi-dimensional approach to my studies. Each unit has been thoroughly engaging, challenging, and inspiring. I have surprised myself by my own progress, and owe greatly to the invaluable guidance and patience of the dedicated teaching staff.

French and Francophone Studies has developed my French language skills and provided an overall enrichment to my learning experience by giving me a deeper insight into the richness of the Francophone world. This has led me to study in Switzerland and work a summer job in France.
