Sopko Honored After UpsetSpringville coach John Sopko was named the Coach of
the Week by the Buffalo Bills and the U.S. National Guardafter his Griffins beat Pioneer 14-13 last week.
“I’m glad to accept this on behalf of the entire program,”Sopko said, “and especially my varsity assistants, RobValenti, Bill Bursee and Garrett Girst.”
Springville entered the game 0-4 after suffering a string ofbitter defeats.
The Griffins lost to Salamanca 7-6, lost in triple-overtimeto Eden and lost to Burgard on a Hail Mary pass on the lastplay of the game. Springville fell to 0-4 when they lost toEast Aurora 14-6.
“We were alllooking aroundwondering whatwas going to hap-pen next,” Sopkosaid. “We knew wewere a good team.It was just a playhere or there thatwas the differencein all of thosegames.”
Sopko said hewas as disgustedas his players.
“There’s notmuch to be saidabout being thebest 0-4 team in thestate,” he said, “butwe all felt we werebetter than ourrecord.”
Sopko tried tokeep his team look-ing forward.
“After each loss,we wanted to getright back to workon Monday,” he said “Just keep the kids focused on thegame in front of us. They knew that we were just a few playsaway from winning all four of those games.”
At 0-4, Springville had the daunting task of facing anundefeated Pioneer team that entered the game ranked 14thin the New York State Class B poll.
“Sometimes you just need your luck begin to turn,” Sopkosaid. “Hopefully this is it.”
Making the night even more festive, was the fact it wasSpringville’s Homecoming night and Pioneer coach JimDuprey, a Springville graduate, was one of four people beinginducted to Springville’s Hall of Fame. Sopko had coachedfor years under Duprey’s father, Jim Duprey, Sr.
“I had a great experience working with Jim Duprey,”Sopko said. “He was always good to me and he was a greatcoach.”
Pioneer scored on the game’s opening drive to take a 7-0
lead but Springville tied the game shortly before halftime.“We felt optimisitic about our ability to play with them,”
Sopko said. “We felt we could win and we were positive inthe locker room at the half.”
Springville scored in the third quarter to take a 14-7 lead.Pioneer scored with less than 3:00 to play but missed the
extra point kick.Quarterback Billy Dickinson rushed 19 times for 125
yards and a TD in the win.“He had a great game executing the triple option,” Sopko
said. “He had a great night running himself, too.”Slot back Tyler
Conklin ran 9times for 88yards, including a24-yard TD run.
Fullback ChrisPhinney added 34yards on 8 carriesand made 7 tack-les on defense.
Sopko playedhigh school foot-ball at WestSeneca West andgraduated in1977.
He then playedat CanisiusCollege while heearned his teach-ing degree andhis Master’sDegree.
He first landeda teaching andassistant coach-ing job at Aldenbefore moving onto Springville. Hetaught Social
Studies and coached modified and freshman football atSpringville from 1989 until 1998.
“I enjoyed the younger levels,” Sopko said. “I got a greatdeal of satisfaction out of getting the kids ready to move upto the next level.”
He quit coaching at Springville to coach at CanisiusCollege but stayed for only the 1999 season.
“You could see the writing on the wall that they weregoing to drop the program,” he said. “My head coach did nothave his contract re-newed. They hired Ed Argast and hehired new assistants.”
Sopko says that the day Canisius dropped football is stillone of the most disappointing days he has ever had associ-ated with the sport.
“It still hurts,” he said. “I’m still angry about it.”He then stayed out of football for 10 years before accept-
ing the head coaching position at Springville.

improved to 5-0 with the win.
“I like our team a lot,” Canisius coach Rich Robbins said.
“These kids have worked hard since January to make sure that this
season is everything they want it to be.”
The fact that Canisius and arch-rival St. Joe’s have both started
5-0 has sent the WNY media into breathless anticipation about the
game between the teams that is looming at the end of the schedule.
“I understand that,” Robbins said. “Any time Canisius plays St.
Joe’s it’s a big deal.
However, we have
Aquinas, Timon and
Cardinal O’Hara on the
schedule. It’s very impor-
tant that we stay focused
on the job at hand.”
Senior Denzel Benton

yards, including a 62-yard
TD pass in the 3rd quarter.
“Denzel is one of the
fastest players we’ve ever
had here at Canisius,”
Robbins said. “He is a
legitimate 4.4 kid in the
40. His speed and ability
when he has the ball in his
hands is phenomenal. He
can make people miss all
over the field.”
Benton, who has been
known as one of WNY’s
top receiver for three years, has caught 19 passes for 370 yards
and 5 TDs this fall.
“Everyone knows what he can do with his ball in his hands,”
Robbins said, “but his downfield blocking, his play on special
teams and his defense have been outstanding this year. He has
become a complete player this season.”
Before the season, Benton went to Robbins and requested a
spot on the kickoff team.
“He came and asked me to play on kickoff coverage,” Robbins
said. “We had some trouble last year with kickoff returns. When a
kid with his skill set asks the coach to be on special teams, that
speaks volumes.”
Benton, a team captain, is getting noticed by several Division I
college programs.
“We’ve heard from a few of the MAC schools,” Robbins said.
“Bowling Green is really interested in him. We’ve also heard from
the New Hampshire and the University of Massachusetts.”

when QB Quinn Corrao snuck in for the game-winning TDfrom a yard out with just :15 left in the game.
“This was a big win but we still have some games leftto play,” Grand Island coach Dean Santorio said. “We stillneed to work hard to get better each week.”
After taking over on theirown 20-yard line with 3:00 leftin the game, the Vikingsworked the hurry-up offense toperfection to drive for thegame-winning TD.
“We’ve actually worked onthe hurry-up offense quite a bitover the last 4 or 5 weeks,”Santorio said. “We haven’tneeded to do it in a game yet.But the situation arose to do itand we did a really nice job.”
It was actually the secondtime in the game that theVikings used the hurry-upoffense for a TD.
With the Vikings holding a14-7 lead, they got the ball ontheir own 20-yard line with just1:30 left in the 2nd quarter.Grand Island proceeded todrive 80 yards in 8 plays andscored a TD with just 2 sec-onds left in the half.
“We did a nice job gettingfirst downs to stop the clock,”Santorio said, “We had twocatches where we got out ofbounds. The kids did a greatjob.”
While Grand Island maynot have had to use theirhurry-up offense in a gameuntil last weekend, the Vikings have actually used it dailysince the season began.
“We work at the hurry-up drill quite a bit,” Santorio said.“We do it every day for at least a couple minutes. We set itup once or twice during in practice every day.”
But, for the hurry-up to work in a game, the quarterbackneeds to stay calm enough to execute the offense.
“Quinn doesn’t get flustered,” Santorio said. “I’m prettypleased with his composure. To execute the hurry-up twicein a game is a pretty big deal.”
The Vikings went to the locker room with a 20-7 leadbut it didn’t last long.
Williamsville North started the second half on their own30-yard line and in the first play, Spartans’ QB RyanMajewski hit Kolbe Hughes with a 69-yard pass to theGrand Island 1. From there, Majewski ran in for a TD.
After forcing a 3-and-out series, Williamsville Northstarted their next possession on their own 15-yard line.
On the first play, Majewski hit Hughes again and, thistime, he went all the way to the end zone.
The Vikings lead was gone in under three minutes ofplaying time... and just three plays from scrimmage.
“We were pretty disappointed,” Santorio said. “We hadplayed well but we werebehind. That just shows that ifyou give someone breathingroom, anything can happen.They made two nice plays andgot the lead.”
Corrao, a junior, finishedthe day by completing 15 of 30passes for 158 yards and 2TDs. But, most impressive, hiscalm direction of the hurry-upoffense stood out.
“He’s always been calmand relaxed no matter what hedoes,” Santorio said. “He’svery relaxed and calm. I thinkthat’s his best quality.”
Corrao is also a pitcher onSantorio’s baseball team atGrand Island. Last spring,Corrao helped the Vikingsreach the state championshipgame.
“He pitched four innings inthe state championship game,”Santorio said. “He’s pitched insome big games. Whetherhe’s facing a pressure situa-tion as a pitcher or as a quar-terback, he does a great job ofhandling it.”
Corrao is also a top stu-dent, maintaining an academicaverage of 3.75 which places
him 33rd out of 257.The Vikings are now 5-0... and may be the most over-
looked 5-0 in WNY history. The were ranked 8th in themost recent Buffalo News poll.
“I don’t worry about that stuff too much,” Santorio said.“You would like to be recognized but some of the teamswe have played don’t have great records. We just try to goabout our business and work hard and let other peoplevote in the polls.”
Grand Island is also in line to get a home game in theupcoming Class A playoffs.
“We have an opportunity to move to 6-0 this week,”Santorio said. “Our kids expect to do well. Our kids workawfully hard and their expectation is to make the playoffs.Beyond that, we just want to do everything we can to wineach week.”

said. “When we
looked at film, we
watched the first
two plays and dis-
carded the rest of
the film. Then we
went to work.”
Niagara Falls
clinched a spot in
the AA playoffs
with the win over
Hutch Tech.
“We had a good
week of aggressive
practice,” Bass
said. “We wanted
to find the 10
things we do well
and make them
stop that. This was
our most complete
game of the sea-
son.”
While the
Wolverines are in
the playoffs, they can still earn a home
game if they beat Kenmore West this
weekend.
“We don’t want to discuss the future,”
Bass said. “We just worry about tomor-
row. We just want to play our best game
this weekend.”
Jaylin Smith stepped in to play QB in
the win. Bass needed someone to replace
starter Ricky Bailey.
“Ricky hurt his shoulder and couldn’t
throw,” Bass said. “I asked Jaylin to play
quarterback. He
started playing QB
on Wednesday.”
Smith rushed for
68 yards and 2 TDs
on 11 carries in the
win. He also com-
pleted 5 of 7 passes
for 95 yards.
“He’s an ath-
lete,” Bass said,
“but he’s football
smart. He made a
perfect read on the
defensive end when
he scored his sec-
ond touchdown.”
Smith is a quick
learner, according to
Bass.
“I told him to
read the end and
pull the handoff,”
Bass said. “He had
only been playing
quarterback for 8 days and he knew per-
fectly what to do.”
Smith is also a good student in school.
“Jaylin is a responsible, forward-think-
ing young man,” Bass said. “He thinks
about his future and wants to be somebody
and he is truly a team player.”

Orchard Park struggled early but beat
Lancaster 34-24 last weekend and
improved to 5-0 with the win.
“The ‘W’ is the thing that counts,”
coach gene Tundo said. “Football is not a
perfect world every
time out. There are
two teams on the
field and Lancaster
gest a say in what
happens. Lancaster
came in with some-
thing to prove on
our Homecoming
and they deserve
all the credit in the
world because they
came after us.”
Tundo says he
is comfortable with
this year’s Quaker
squad.
“I feel great
about these kids,”
he said. “They are
a great group. This
is a hard-working
team that gets
along very well.
We are improving all the time. They have
every aspiration to get back to where we
were last year.”
Tundo did say he was still looking for
ways that his team could get better before
the playoffs start.
“There’s things we have to improve
on,” he said, “We have to clean up a few
defensive mistakes. But we had 540 yards
of offense and no turnovers. That’s pretty
good football.”
One player who has stepped up in
recent weeks is
senior Jett
Modkins, a starter
at safety.
Modkins was
called on to fill in
at RB when starter
Mitch Wilson suf-
fered a sprained
knee.
“Jett’s a good
kid and works
hard,” Tundo said.
“He loves the
game. He came
here three years ago
and he’s really
coming into his
own. He’s proving
himself to be a top-
rate player.”
Modkins is in
charge of the defen-
sive secondary.
“He knows the game real well,” Tundo
said. “He’s athletic, has good speed and
strength. He calls our secondary cover-
ages and our rotations. He’s exactly how
you want your guys on defense. He’s an
even-keeled kid who can think on the run
and make adjustments.”

es to Canisius and
Sweet Home when
they stepped on the
field against East.
“We thought it was important to come
out and perform well and execute,”
Wilson said. “We really picked it up in the
second half. That’s one thing we need to
stress is playing four quarters of solid
football and that takes discipline.”
Reyzjon Jordan rushed 6 times for 39
yards and a TD in the win. Jordan leads
the Macks with 529 yards rushing this sea-
son.
“We move him around quite a bit,”
Wilson said. “Last year he played QB. He
is mainly a running
back this year but
we still use him as a
QB at times. We
even move him to
wide out every now
and then.”
Jordan has
scored 7 TDs this
season and has also
tossed 3 TD passes.
“He’s an all-
around athlete,”
Wilson said. “He’s
also our kicker and
he can punt. He can
do just about any-
thing.”
Jordan is also
the starting point
guard on the
McKinley basket-
ball team.”
“He’s quick,”
Wilson said. “He’s one of the fastest play-
ers in Class A and he’s a key asset for us.”
Jordan is a 2-year team captain of the
Macks.
“Some days Rey is very quiet,” Wilson
said, “but when he needs to step up to the
plate and be vocal he can be.”

McDuffie said that he will rememberthe game no matter how long he coaches.
“It was a very positive experience,” he
said, “not only for me and Chris but alsofor our mother and father. My father start-ed on my side of the field and our motherwas on his side but you could see themswitch at halftime.”
DespiteBennett’s strugglesearly this season,senior linemanKhalil Sommervillehas been a standout.
“He’s been a 4-year starter at thevarsity level,”McDuffie said,“and he’s startedboth ways since hissophomore year.”
Sommerville (6-2, 270) starts at Gand DE this season.He made 8 tacklesand 2 QB sacks inthe win.
“He has been aforce all year forus,” McDuffie said.“He’s a great kid.He does the right
thing in the classroom and off the field.”Sommerville has been timed at 4.71 in
the 40-yard dash.“That’s good speed for a big man,”
McDuffie said. “We’re getting some inter-est in him from Morgan State and NewHampshire.”

leagues in New York State,” coach Eric
Valley said. “As
long as we play
well, our destiny is
in our own hands.”
East High
scored the first TD
but Medina rallied
and led 14-6 at the
half.
Kyle Barna
rushed 8 times for
93 yards and a TD
in the win.
The Mustangs
also scored a pair
of defensive TDs.
Ben Austin
returned a fumble
70 yards for a TD
and Lonnie Taylor
returned an INT 15
yards for another
TD.
“Lonnie had a
huge night for us,” Valley said. “He
played an unbelievable game.”
In addition to the INT return for a TD,
Taylor caught a 35-yard pass, ripped off
20-yard run, recorded a pair of QB 2
sacks and averaged 43 yards per punt.
Valley is a bit surprised that his team
is still alive in the Class B playoff race.
“We started 6 sophomores and a fresh-
man in Week 1,” he said. “It took us a
while to get our feet underneath us. But
the kids are excited. Playing Alden is a
great opportunity to
play the best.”
With such a
young roster, senior
captain Adam Eick
has been a big asset
for Valley.
“He’s a farm
boy,” Valley said.
“He’s one of the
hardest working
kids we have.”
Eick (6-2, 210)
has started at LT,
NT, DE and DT this
season.
“He is extremely
strong,” Valley said.
“He is routinely
giving up 50
pounds to bigger
linemen but he
holds his own up
front for us. He’s
been tremendous this year.”
Eick is an outstanding student who
maintains and academic average of 96.
“He runs our entire offensive line,”
Valley said. “He can tell any lineman
what to do on any play. He’s like a coach
on the field for us.”

clinch the title

this weekend.
“They have had
their sights set on
winning the divi-
sion for a while,”
Fatta said. “We set
that goal early on.”
Fatta said that
excitement is
growing about the
Warriors.
“Our players are excited that all the
hard work they put in are showing some
results,” he said. “Everyone is excited
about the potential of our team. The
atmosphere in school is starting to build
and everyone is looking forward to the
playoffs.”
One players who has played a big role
in the Warrios 5-0 start is junior Preaton
Summers.
“He never comes off the field,” Fatta
said. “He has really
played well this
season.”
Summers has
seen time at RB,
slot back and also
starts at CB on
defense. He also
plays on all the spe-
cial teams units.
“He has been
reliable and he’s
been resilient,”
Fatta said. “He
takes pride in his
blocking. He blocks
as hard as he runs
with the ball and
has been a really
great all-around
player for us.”
Summers (5-6,
130) does not have
a lot of size.
“He’s small and quick but he’s very
strong,” Fatta said.
Summers has scored 9 TDs this season
and has intercepted 3 passes.
“He’s a great kid, “Fatta said. “He’s a
leader in teh games and in practice. He
has a great attitude.”

Olean kept their Class B playoff hopes
alive when they beat Eden 28-14 last
weekend.
Olean coach Mike Kane admits that a
lot still has to happen for the Huskies.
“It’s a compli-
cated process,”
Kane said, “but we
can still qualify for
playoffs. We have
2 losses in the
league and that
puts us right in the
thick of everything.
We have to win our
games, that’s all we
can control.”
Kane says that
his squad has
improved since the
start of the season.
“We are still a
young team,” he
said. “We are gain-
ing confidence and
starting to play bet-
ter defense. We
actually ran the
ball a little more
against Eden. We eliminated a lot of mis-
takes and had no turnovers. We are still
improving and getting better every week.”
QB Chance Anzivine had a big night
in the win over Eden as he completed 14
of 25 passes for 201 yards ad a TD.
“This was his best game of the sea-
son,” Kane said. “We have some pretty
good receivers and he is pretty good at
reading matchups. He did well.”
Anzivine also started on defense for
the first time this season.
“We had an
injury so we started
Chance at outside
linebacker,” Kane
said. “He does well
on defense but we
don’t want to play
him there all the
time yet.”
Anzivine (5-11,
185) has passed for
996 yards and 8
TDs this season.
“He’s got a real-
ly strong arm and
he’s a really smart
kid,” Kane said.
“He has worked out
all off-season and
he came in pretty
strong.”
Kane says that
Anzivine has
allowed Olean to
open up their Spread Offense and stretch
the defenses even more than in the past.
“He throws the deep ball,” Kane said.
“He can put some zip on it and he’s very
accurate. He’s grown into being a leader
and has really gotten better at reading
defenses. He’s had a good year.”

Fredonia won a huge game over Cleve
Hill last week, 15-8, to jump right back
into the race for the C North Division
title. Three teams now have one loss each
so the race may take a while to sort out.
“I think we are
playing well right
now,” Fredonia
coach Bob Ball
said. “We weren’t
very good against
Allegany or
Wilson. We start 3
sophomores on
each side of the
ball so we were a
little slow getting
out of the gate this
year.”
When the
Hillbillies traveled
to Wilson, several
factors led to the
loss. Starting RB
Zach Buckley was
injured during the
game’s opening
minutes.
“We also had a
lot of stupid penalties,” Ball said. “We
turned the ball over, we had 90 yards in
penalties and lost our RB. Add that up
and it usually means a loss.”
After the loss to Wilson Ball had a
direct talk with his players.
“We had so many 15-yard penalties
after the play it was ridiculous,” he said.
“Totally unnecessary stuff. So we told the
kids that if you get a 15-yard penalty, just
come to the sideline. We will have a sub
already going in for you. You will miss
the series. If you
say anything, you
will miss the rest of
the half. If you
mouth off, you will
miss the game. We
haven’t had a 15-
yard penalty since
that loss at Wilson.”
One player who
has played well and
led Fredonia to the
top of the standings
is starting lineman
Tory Grupa.
“He’s a tough
leader and a com-
plete football play-
er,” Ball said.
Grupa started at
C in 2011 and also
plays RG and MLB
this season.
“He also plays
hockey, so he’s a good athlete,” Ball said.
“Even though he started last year, he has
been getting better each week.”
Grupa is one of Fredonia’s hardest
workers, according to Ball.
“He studies hard and works hard for
everything he gets,” Ball said.

tion... they have to

Valley this weekend
or they will miss
the Class C play-
offs.
“We have to
win,” coach Jay
Sirianni said. “If we
earn our way into
the playoffs, we
could pose some
problems for teams
in the first round.
But we have to get
there first. It comes
down to our game
with Cassadaga
Valley.”
To have
Southwestern in
such a situation is
startling. The
Trojans have played in three NYS champi-
onship games in the last four seasons.
“We haven’t been in this situation,”
Sirianni said, “but it’s high school sports.
Some years you’re up and some you’re
down. We’ve suffered some losses and it’s
testing our character.”
One player who has been a stalwart for
the Trojans as they try to find their way is
senior WR Ryan Schutte.
“He started last year as a junior,”
Sirianni said. “He had to step up this year
as a leader.”
Schutte is among
WNY’s leaders with
18 receptions for
198 yards.
“He’s not a big
kid,” Sirianni said.
“He’s small in size
but he’s quick and
he understands the
game very well.”
Schutte had two
older brothers who
played for Sirianni.
Matt Schutte gradu-
ated in 2007 while
Trevor, a starting
tackle for both NYS
title teams, graduat-
ed in 2010.
“He’s a good
athlete just like his
brothers were,”
Sirianni said. “He’s
also on the golf team and he used to play
hockey.”
Schutte is a an outstanding student and
member of the National Honor Society.
“He’s a smart kid,” Sirianni said. “Our
whole team is pretty smart. Hopefully that
will help us a bit on Friday.”

late in the third period.
Jeremiah Russin made the play of the
game when he took a took a high punt
snap and ran for a first down. The T-Birds
scored on the drive to take an 8-6 lead.
“Jeremiah is a very athletic kid,”
Greco said. “He does an awful lot for us.”
Midway through the 4th quarter,
Russin caught a a 63-yard TD pass to put
the game away.
“The pass was
thrown short,”
Greco said, “and
Jeremiah came back
to get the ball. He
caught it and out-
raced three guys to
the end zone.”
Russin, who
plays point guard
on the basketball
team, plasy WR,
QB and CB for the
football team.
“He’s also our
punter and kicks off
for us,” Greco said.
“He can do multiple
things for us. We
move him all over
the place.”
Russin became a
leader over the off-
season, according to Greco.
“He got really involved in the weight
room,” Greco said. “He was at all of our
off-season workouts. He plays within
himself but if we need a few strong words
he’ll step up and say what needs to be
said.”

before advancing
to the Chuck Funke
Bowl champi-
onship in 2011.
“We lost to
Sherman but that
was a big step forward for us,” Blecha
said.
The Panthers have a winning record as
the season heads into the final two weeks.
“We have some talent this year,”
Blecha said. “A lot of our kids have been
on the varsity for three years. They went
through the lean years and now we have
players with some experience.”
Franklinville will play at Sherman this
week in a crucial league game.
“We haven’t mentioned anything about
our playoff situa-
tion,” Blecha said.
“We are just going
out and trying to
win every week.
That’s our only
goal.”
If Franklinville
is going to make
the playoffs, they
will be relying
heavily on junior
QB Peter Kopp.
“This is his 3rd
year as our starting
QB,” Blecha said.
“He’s a very athlet-
ic kid. He’s hard-
nosed, and tough.”
Kopp also starts
at defensive end.
“He started at
free safety last year
but we moved him
to defensive end,” Blecha said. “ He’s a
big hitter and loves to be physical.”
Kopp has rushed for 290 yards and 3
TDs this season.
“He does a lot of things for us,”
Blecha said. “He’s a very competitive kid.
He’s quiet kid but he wants to win.”

Cardinal O’Hara earned its first win of
the season when the Hawks beat
Rochester UPrep 49-30 last weekend.
“Our kids needed a win,” coach
Angelo Sciandra said. “There has to be
some sort of veryfi-
ing that their hard
work pays off.”
Sciandra said
that he has seen
weekly improve-
ment despite the
first four games
ended in a loss.
“We need to
compete better so
we can win in our
league,” Sciandra
said. “We are one
of the smallest
schools in a very
tough league. Our
kids have played
well. We have been
losing but the kids
have been improv-
ing and playing
well.”
Sciandra says
that he will never look to make the
Hawks schedule easier.
“People that think I’m nuts,” he said.
“They say we should be playing more
schools our size. But I tell the kids that
when you are out there competing in life,
no one cares whether you came from a
large or a small school. When it comes to
competing for a job, no one is going to
adjust anything for you. If you want to be
the best, you have to play the best and
beat the best.”
QB AnthonyDiFrancesco rushed25 times for 214yards and 3 TDs inthe win over UPrep.He also led thedefense with theteam-high of 7 solotackles and a QBsack.

carries against St.
Mary’s. He’s work-
horse and doesn’t
mind the work.”
DiFrancesco, a 6-2, 170-pound senior,also starts at OLB forthe Hawks.
“He has good
size,” Sciandra said.
“He’s also fast and he’s tough. He just
runs hard.”
DiFrancesco, who also plays basketball,
maintains an academic average of 95.
He’s Top 10 in his class ,” Sciandra
said. “He’s a great kid. We should have a
hundred kids like him.”

Alden pulled awayfrom Depew in the 2ndhalf to win a matchup ofundefeated, state-rankedteams, 34-13, last week-end.
“I thought it was avery close, physical ballgame,” Alden coach DickDiminuco said. “I didn’tthink it would be three-touchdown difference atthe end.”
Depew took the lead7-0 on a 5-yard TD runby Rodney Turner butAlden countered with TDruns by tailback CoreyBarczykowski and QBKen Stoldt. The Bulldogsled 14-7 at the half.
“At halftime, I thoughtthat it could go eitherway,” Diminuco said.
Alden struck quickly inthe third quarter whenMatt Shields returned aninterception 36 yards fora TD.
“That was a hugeplay,” Diminuco said.“That gave us a littlebreathing room and reallyset them back.”
After Depew pulledwith 21-13, Barczykowskipunched in two more TDs, including a 29-yard rumble inthe fourth quarter to put the game away.
“Our kids did a great job and our offensive line reallytook over the second half,” Diminuco said. “We playedwell and did all the things we want them to do. We stillhave things we have to get better at, no question aboutit, but we played well.”
In one of the most-hyped regular-season games in afew years, Alden had entered the game ranked #2 in theNYS Class B poll while Depew was ranked fourth. A hugeHomecoming crowd had packed the stands a large num-ber of standees ringed the field at Alden.
“It was a great feeling to walk onto the field and haveall those fans there,” Barczykowski said. “That was a
pretty big crowd.”The teams had met
twice last season withAlden winning bothgames, including a 12-0win in the Class B titlegame in Ralph WilsonStadium.
Alden has now wontwo straight Section 6titles. After two straightclose losses to eventualstate-champion Hornellin the Far WestRegionals, the Bulldogshave their sights set onmore this fall.
“We are trying toreach our expectations,”Barczykowski said, “but,I said the same thinglast year.”
In 2011, the Bulldogslost to Hornell 21-20 inovertime in the Far Westregionals. It was thesecond straight seasonthat Alden had lost aclose game to Hornell.
“Losing to Hornellhurt a lot,” Barczykowskisaid. “We should havebeat them.”
Diminuco does notdeny that his team’sgoal is the win the New
York State title this year.“Any good football coach sets the bar high,” Diminuco
said, “and tries to get your football team to reach the bar.Yes, we are going to try and get there.”
And while Alden had a solid running game in 2011, theBulldogs are much more punishing this season.
Barczykowski carried 29 times against Depew andrushed for 252 yards against the #4 team in the state.
“He gives 100 percent on every play,” Diminuco said.“He’s a physical kid. He’s a North-South runner and he’llpunish you when he runs the football.”

Patterson, who had rushed for more than 1,000 yards inthe season’s first four games. After Patterson was injured,Barczykowski stepped in at tailback and ran for 842 yardsand 7 TDs.
“Corey did a great job for us last year,” Diminuco said.“He started on defense at cornerback and filled in at widereceiver. He played some tailback but when Justin washurt, Corey stepped in full time and did a great job.”
Barczykowski and Patterson were best friends - andtwo very different running backs.
“Justin could hit a home run every time he carried theball,” Diminuco said. “Corey gets into the secondary andruns over people.”
And, in truth, Barczykowski has been bull for the‘Dawgs this season. He currently leads all rushers in WNYwith 897 yards. He has also rushed for 13 TDs.
“He’s also bigger than last year,” Diminuco said. “He’sput on about 15 pounds.”
Barczykowski (6-2, 195) played at 175 pounds lastyear.
“He has above-average speed,” Diminuco said. “Andhe’s a true competitor.”
Barczykowski, now a senior, says he didn’t mind wait-ing his turn while Patterson started last season.
“Justin was a great runner,” Barczykowski said. “I’velearned a lot from him. He’s still one of my best friendsand he really helps me out. I didn’t mind being behind him.It was for the team and when it was time to step up I hadto step up.”
When Diminuco started coaching at Alden three yearsago, Barczykowski was a freshman on the Alden JV team.
“We knew what we had with him,” Diminuco said. “Youcould tell he was going to be a very good athlete. He com-peted and you could see that someday he would blossomphysically.”
Diminuco is not sure if Barczykowski will play collegefootball.
“He was an all-league baseball player,” Diminuco said,“and he really loves baseball as well. He could play eithersport in college but I don’t know which one he’ll want toplay. I just want him to go and get an education.”
In fact, Barczykowski’s older brother Christian, is apitcher in the Atlanta Braves organization.
“Christian is pitching for the Braves’ Rookie Leagueteam in Orlando, Florida,” Corey said. “He throws about96 miles-per-hour. He’s the reason I work so hard. I wantto say I was better than him in high school.”
While Barczykowski was only half-kidding about beingbetter than his older brother, he is deadly serious aboutAlden winning a state title in football this fall.
“I think we have great team chemistry and great lead-ers,” Barczykowski said. “Everyone seems to bond thisyear. We have great assistant coaches that really help usout with the schemes each week. If our team keeps ourhead to the grindstone, I think we can win games. It’s allabout our focus.”

2012Starpoint opened up a 28-7 lead at
the half and beat North Tonawanda48-7 last week.
The win clinched a spot in theClass A playoffs for the Spartans. It isthe second consecutive year thatStarpoint will appear in the post-sea-son tournament.
“Right nowour kids are play-ing with a lot ofconfidence,”Starpoint coachAl Cavagnarosaid. “We’verushed for over300 yards ineach of the lasttwo weeks.”
After losses toGrand Island andLockportdropped theSpartans to 1-2,Cavagnaro madesome moveswith his lineup.
He insertedKevin Armstrong(6-1, 235) andRion Elson (6-0,260) into startingspots on theoffensive line.
“They’re big kids,” Cavagnaro said.“I just felt we needed more size upfront.”
Starpoint won two straight A Northgames in convincing fashion. TheSpartans rushed for 367 yards in awin over Niagara Wheatfield andrushed for 344 yards in the win overNorth Tonawanda.
“I don’t know if I’m smart or stupid,”Cavagnaro said, “but maybe thosekids should have been there from thestart.”
In the win over North Tonawanda,Evan Majewski rushed for 164 yardsand 4 TDs and did not play in the 4thquarter.
“Up until now, the running backslooked slow,” Cavagnaro said. “It waslike they weren’t sure the holes were
going to bethere.”
After thechanges to theline, the runninggame has accel-erated into highgear.
“Evan hasconfidence withthese guys infront of him,”Cavagnaro said,“he just knowsthe hole is goingto be there.”
Majewski, ajunior, led theSpartans in rush-ing last seasonwith 971 yardsand 10 TDs.
“He’s a com-plete runningback,” Cavagnarosaid. “He’s strong
enough to break tackles and quickenough to get outside. He has greatinstincts about when to cut and whento follow his blockers.”
Majewski finished 4th in the 200-meter dash at the Section 6 meet.
“He’s got speed,” Cavagnaro said.Majewski has an academic aver-
age in the high 80s, was voted a teamcaptain before the season started.
“He very much leads by example,”Cavagnaro said, “in the weight roomand on the practice field. He doesn’ttake plays off and the other kids know

When Clarence lost to Frontier two weeks ago, theRed Devils also lost QB Mark Armstrong when he suf-fered a separated shoulder.
“He dropped back to pass and got hit from the blindside,” Clarence coach Mark Layer said. “The Frontierplayer got him cleanly and he hit the ground and separat-ed his right shoulder. It’s mild, but he won’t play footballanymore.”
Armstrong didn’t initially know theextent of his injury.
“I got up and I thought I mighthave pinched something,” Armstrongsaid. “But then I tried to move myselfand I couldn’t move my arm. I knewsomething was wrong.”
Armstrong was having a good sea-son when it ended so suddenly. Hewas among WNY’s leaders in pass-ing yards and TDs.
“Mark is a tremendous athlete anda tremendous leader,” Layer said.“He was having a great season.”
Layer had coached Armstrong forfour straight seasons.
“Mark started for me on the JVteam as a 9th grader and again as a10th grader,” Layer said. “He movedup to the varsity the same year I tookover the varsity job. He started 28games for me.”
To have a QB follow a coach isunusual.
“We developed a unique working relationship,” Layersaid. “That was a pretty special thing. Mark and I knowwhat we are trying to do offensively. It was a wonderfulexperience working with him.”
Unfortunately, Armstrong is also a baseball pitcher. Hisfastball is consistently over 90 MPH. He had a scholar-ship offer on the table from the University of Pittsburgh.
Thankfully, Pittsburgh did not pull the scholarship offerwhen they heard about the injury.
“He met with the baseball staff and everything is still ago there,” Layer said. “They encouraged him to play foot-ball and they are backing him 100 percent.”
Layer has known Armstrong a lot longer than thesenior has been playing football. Layer and his wifeMichelle both teach at the Clarence Center Elementary
School. Armstrong’s mother, Joanne, is a Teacher’s Aideat the same school.
“I’ve known Mark since he was in elementary school,”Layer said. “Our family had a longtime connection withMark and his family. I was really looking forward for thisyear to be our culminating athletic season together.”
Armstrong’s father, Bob, was an active coach in manyof the youth sports seasons in Clarence. He coachedLittle League baseball and Youth hockey.
“He’s been my coach since I was 3 years old,”Armstrong said. “He was a three-sport athlete and hadinjuries. He got hurt his senior year in football, too.”
On January 28th of this year, Bob Armstrong startedfeeling pain in his chest.
“We were with him at the time,” Mark said. “He hadtight chest pains and we called the ambulance. We got to
the hospital but he didn’t make it.”The entire Clarence community
was shocked when Bob Armstrongdied at the age of 50.
“Mark’s dad was very involved insports in Clarence,” Layer said. “Hewas a standout hockey player himself.He fully supported Mark in all his ath-letic endeavors, as much as anyfather could have.”
Bob Armstrong was an All-American hockey player at ClarkstonUniversity and even got a tryout withthe Toronto Maple Leafs.
“He was going through their train-ing camp,” Mark said, “but he got areally good job offer. He had alreadyhad a great hockey career so he tookthe job.”
Mark’s senior season was sup-posed to be a crowning achievementfor Armstrong and his dad. But lifehas a way of changing your plans...whether it’s an injury or a suddenheart attack.
“My dad preached work hard and to never quit,” Marksaid. “Never back down and never be intimidated. Workto the best of your ability no matter what and then youcan lay your head down at night and be proud.”
Layer does not doubt that Armstrong will pitch thisspring for Clarence and then pitch in college.
“It’s a heartbreaking thing,” Layer said. “Mark’s a greatkid and has a great future in front of him. This injury iswhat it is and his job is to get ready for baseball. I knowhe’ll take it and run with it.”
Despite the heartbreak this year has given him,Armstrong says he will never quit and never back down.
“My dad would say, this is the way it happens,” Marksaid. “I’m going to keep going with what I learned andwhat he taught me. It’s worked out pretty well so far.”
