Footy Colours DayRecently, Maclean High School staff and students were encouraged to simply dress in their footy colours and donate a gold coin in an effort to make a difference for kids with cancer this year!

Footy Colours Day is a national fundraising campaign which helps kids with cancer. Those kids need you now more than ever.

Kids with cancer are especially vulnerable to COVID-19, and are facing prolonged isolation due to their weakened immune system.

The money raised through Footy Colours Dayfunds Fight Cancer Foundation’s education support programs. The program’s educators deserve a standing ovation for their dedication to helping kids with cancer when they need support the most. Keeping kids with cancer engaged with their education during their treatment and recovery is no small feat, especially when their treatment can make them feel so unwell.

Year 9 Engineering StudiesThe Year 9 Engineering Studies students have just finished a unit on bridges. They completed a research assignment on famous bridges: Sydney Harbour, Brooklyn, Millau Viaduct and the Oresund bridge. The students have completed theory work on the types of bridges, forces bridges are under and different materials that can be used in bridge construction.

The final assignment was to design and construct a bridge to withstand weight being applied to it. There are many strange and innovative designs with the two winning designs being the only ones that could withstand over 100kg. Here are the two winning teams: Jackson Moss with Jarrah Edsell-Sims and Hendrix Mahoney with Ajanta Black.

Mr Kelly.

Careers NewsScholarshipsWe currently have over 15 scholarships for students from Year 7 to Year 12 listed on Sentral. Applicants do not need to be a superstar athlete or be coming first in their year to apply. There are opportunities for students who would like to attend TAFE, scholarships to attend industry specific camps and for students who are studying specific subjects. Learning to apply for scholarships during junior years is a great way to perfect skills related to applying for jobs and scholarships in senior grades and after transitioning from school. ASSIST your Maclean High School family member to write a 250 word personal statement about themselves, dot points are fine. They could include challenges they have overcome, their favourite subjects at school and why they like them, what they want to do when they transition from school and why or a time they demonstrated teamwork, leadership or empathy.

Job VacanciesPart time, full time, weekend, traineeships, apprenticeships. Keep an eye on Sentral for regular updates for positions available both locally and nationwide. We have over 20 roles currently listed, most with hyperlinks to how to apply. ASK your Maclean High School family member if they are coping with balancing their social, school and work life and what they need you to do if they are feeling overwhelmed.

CentrelinkFind out fast if you can get a Centrelink payment for university or TAFE https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/individuals/topics/payment-and-service-finder/28656

Youth AllowanceHave you applied for Youth Allowance? It is a fortnightly payment to help you with the cost of going to university or TAFE, or doing an apprenticeship https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/individuals/services/centrelink/youth-allowance

Important Documents to Help You Get a JobDoes your Maclean High School family member have access to all the documents they will need when they transition from school, apply for a job or go for their licence? It is super important they have access to their birth certificate, updated Medicare card and their student ID. These documents are used as identification when applying for a USI, a licence, White Card, enrolling to vote or signing up to a course at uni or TAFE. CHECK if you have access to an original birth certificate for all your Maclean High School family members.

TAFE YESAll students over 15 who are interested in a one day a week industry immersion program, TAFE YES are invited to place their names on the list outside the Careers staffroom. Industry areas include Carpentry, Automotive, Animal Studies, Early Childhood Education and Care and Music Industry. Students who attend this program will miss one day a week of school and will be required to make up any missed work during their own time. Expressions of interest close Friday, 11th September at the end of recess. ASK your Maclean High School family member if they have put their name down for TAFE YES.

SentralDo you have access to Sentral? Sentral is where we post a tonne of information about everything happening at Maclean High School, but also opportunities for students to further enhance their understanding of where they might want to go when transitioning from Maclean High School. Don’t have access? Give the school a call on 6645 2244. ASK your Maclean High School family member to show you how to access Sentral.

Miss Danielle Fisher, Careers Adviser.

Year 9 CommerceOur Year 9 Commerce students have been working tirelessly for the past seven weeks creating new business ideas as part of the curriculumsupported program ‘Learning in Action’, NSW StartUP. All business ideas had to align with the United Nations sustainable development goals and our class focused on goal number 11, creating sustainable communities and cities. Businesses that have now been created from this program include Urban Masks, MYLK Australia, FoodMaps App, Trash Recycling App, BamBee been homes, Coastline in a Bag - seaweed bags and Greens from Beans - natural garden compost.

On Monday students had to pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges. These included Jill Young from Botero Maclean, Hayley Talbot and Ang Lagos from Blanc Space Yamba, Debrah Novak - Yamba Community Farmers Market and, we were so grateful to have on the panel international Emmy award winner and co creator of ABC’s Dirt Girl - Cate McQuillen and Logie Award winner Costa Georgiadis!! What a panel!! Students are to be congratulated on pitching their business ideas; all groups did an amazing job!! A special mention must be made to our place winners in the pitch competition:

Year 7 HistoryYear 7 History students have been working very hard through the Ancient China Topic. Mrs Court has been working with specific classes to help improve and develop writing skills of students for which there has been noticeable improvement. To finish off the topic students created ‘The Great Wall of Ancient Chinese Facts’.

SRC Induction CeremonyThe Induction Ceremony for 2020 School Leaders and SRC members was held on Thursday, 27th August in the school Library. Due to COVID-19 it had been postponed from the original date of 24th March due to learning from home which had come into force shortly before. Unfortunately, due to continuing restrictions, family members were unable to attend this year’s ceremony. Students were officially presented with their badges and were sworn in as this year’s SRC. Mr Court gave an abridged Principal’s Address, and year groups were presented with their badges by a member of staff, brother or sister and also took their oath with the School Captains, Riley Duncombe and Katherine Behn who chaired the event, assisted by Vice Captains Taylor Johnson, Celaeste Treasure and Ethan Davis.

This group of students have done their school proud this year, holding several successful fundriasing events whilst adhering to current restrictions. They have run a Valentine’s Day rose sale, Multiple Sclerosis fundraiser, Biggest Morning Tea, Pride Day, Footy Colours Day and this week are coordinating with student Support Officer, Miss Lisa Bevitt, to present Love Your Body Week in support of the Butterfly Foundation and people living with eating disorders and RuOK? Day to support mental health awareness. Our students have led the way choosing initiatives that they feel are relevant to their school and community. These events have raised over $1000 for chosen charities. They have donated $200 to Legacy in lieu of their annual badge sale and are planning days to bring awareness to people with hearing issues and remain active in providing a link between the school staff and students.

I am extremely proud of each and every one of these students and am honoured to be the SRC Coordinator for 2020. I would like to thank Mr Greg Court, Mrs Danielle Hollis, Mrs Tanya Fisher, Mrs Bel Cameron and Mrs Naomi Court for their assistance with the running of the Induction Ceremony, Mrs Debra Loy for typing the commendations, Mrs Brenda Rice and Mrs Pam Hansell for printing the programs. Also thank you to the parents for your understanding and support of your children.

Ms Elaine Essex, SRC Cordinator 2020.
