LIBRARY NEWS
Final Storytime for Term 1 The children certainly kept me busy with a variety of
books and the same when you read at home - “can we
read this one again?” But as we know, children
learn by what is repetitive and reading is the easy and
most enjoyable side of my job here at the library. We
finished with balloons for all the children – Sasha,
thank you for being my helper on the morning. You
handed out the balloons wonderfully.
(Storytime - a gorgeous autumn morning of stories and singing
at the last Storytime for first term.)
School Holidays School holidays are upon us so if you staying in
Kojonup remember we have a really awesome range
of reading books for all ages, DVD’s for movie
nights, jigsaws and Audio books to share. If you need
to get out of your home for a while, please come into
the library. The computers are here too for everyone’s
use.
New Reads How to be Calm – Anna Barnes.
Calmness is within your reach. With
a little bit of help, the methods of
truly relaxing your mind and body,
of letting go of stresses and strains,
can be learned, practised and
perfected. Bursting with tips,
centring statements and soothing
activities, How to Be Calm will help you to feel more
at ease in the world and better equipped to deal with
the things that really matter.
Happier at Home – Gretchen Rubin.
Gretchen Rubin realized that her
home, in all its aspects, was the most
crucial element influencing her
happiness. So, starting in September
(the new January), Gretchen
dedicated a school year—from
September through May—to
concentrate on the factors that matter for home, such
as possessions, marriage, time, parenthood, body,
neighbourhood. How can she control the cubicle in
her pocket? How might she highlight her family’s
most treasured possessions? How, for so long, had she
overlooked the importance of the sense of smell? And
it really was time to replace that dud toaster.
The Tin Men – Michael Frayn. Why
not programme computers to take
over the really dull jobs that human
beings have to do - such as praying
and behaving morally? At the
William Morris Institute of
Automaton Research they are doing
just that to free mankind from the
really stimulating and demanding tasks of living today
- first and foremost the impending visit of Her
Majesty the Queen to open its new wing.
Roebuck: Tales of an Admirable
Adventurer – Luke Waterson.
Roebuck is based on the true story
of Knivet’s escapades in South
America during the 1590s, when
desperate to prove his worth to his
father and his betrothed, he
embarks with Thomas Cavendish
on the explorer’s ill-fated
circumnavigation of the globe.
Torn: The Connections Series, Book 2
– Kim Karr. Rock star River Wilde
brought Dahlia London back from the
brink of hopelessness with his
unwavering love and devotion. But
their entwined history is about to test
the strength of that love.

BETTER BEGINNINGS FOR 4/5 YEAR OLDS
It was with great pleasure that I was welcomed by the
Kindy Children of St. Bernard’s to read to them as a
group. We thoroughly enjoyed Never Ever by Jo
Empson and then There was an old Sailor by Claire
Saxby. This fantastic rhyming text is based on ‘There
was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly’ but with a
nautical twist. This is a great text to reread as the
more often you read it the more familiar your child
will become with the text, enabling them to join in
with the story. The fishy facts (found at the back of
the book) add interest to the text. The packs are
provided by the State Library of WA But delivered by
our local Library and are for the children to take home
and enjoy with their family.

SPRINGHAVEN NEWS
Autumn is upon us and with it comes the
unpredictable weather which is not helping with our
ongoing renovations at Springhaven.
Renovations to the
bathrooms are continuing
with a large amount of
noise and dust. Residents
continue to accept the
inconvenience caused by
the work and are looking
forward to using the
finished bathrooms
hopefully by June.
The facility had a very
positive visit from the Aged Care Quality Agency last
week. The community can be assured that the quality
of care being provided at Springhaven is up to the
standards as required by the Agency. The assessor
was also impressed with the work being undertaken to
improve facilities for the residents.
ANZAC Day Service ANZAC Day is nearly upon us and the facility will be
holding their own service to remember those that gave
their lives for our country at 11:15am on ANZAC
Day. The service will be held in the Recreation Room
and will be followed by a cuppa. All are welcome to
attend. Please RSVP on 9831 2800 or via email to
[email protected] by Friday, 22 April 2016.
Happy hour at Springhaven is at 3:00pm every Friday.
We would love for you to come and have a drink and
chat with the residents. The residents love having
visitors at morning and afternoon tea time. The
residents would also love you to come up and play
cards or board games with them any time. If you have
any queries you can contact us on 98312800.
CHEMCLEAR COMING TO WESTERN AUSTRALIA
ChemClear is coming to Western Australia in June
2016 and is urging chemical users to register their
surplus or unwanted agvet chemicals for safe disposal
before 22 April 2016.
“We encourage WA farmers to seize the opportunity
to use our program this year as it will be another two
years before we head back across the Nullarbor,” said
National Program Manager Lisa Nixon.
Since the program was established 16 years ago,
ChemClear has undertaken five regional collection
runs across Western Australia and retrieved in excess
of 61 tonnes of obsolete agvet chemicals.
To register for the WA June collection, please take
an inventory of your product and call 1800 008 182
or visit www.chemclear.com.au.

soon as possible as registrations close on 22 April

lifestyle changes after completing cancer treatment.

months from a Cancer Council nurse. Our nurses assist
with setting goals for exercise and healthy eating, and

moderate-intensity exercise, reduce saturated fat intake
and increase fruit and vegetable intake.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT PENSIONER RATES CONCESSION FOR 2016/2017
As part of the 2015/2016 State Budget, the State
Government announced that from the rating year
commencing 1 July 2016, the 50% concession
allowed to eligible pensioners on local government
rates would be restricted to a capped amount. Western
Australia was previously the only State not to provide
a dollar cap on Local Government Rates.
The pensioner rates capped amounts will be set each
year, consistent with the manner in which senior’s
rates caps are set. The gazettal of the cap amounts
usually occurs in late June, prior to the
commencement of the rating year. The pensioner rate
capped amount has been announced as $750 for
2016/2017.
The Shire does not administer the laws in regards to
pensioner concessions. If you wish to lodge a
complaint regarding the capping of the pensioner
rebate you will need to contact your local Member of
Parliament.

Last Thursday, 31 March 2016 was the launch of the Deadly Brotha Boyz program which is a youth mentoring
program run by Robbie Miniter and the Wirrpanda Foundation to support Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander
youths between the ages of 8-18. The launch was held at the Kojonup Sports Complex which provided easy
access to the kids to come across from Kojonup District High School. The aim of the program is to encourage
youths at risk of or having entered the youth justice system to reengage and connect with their school and
community through positive male mentors and other exercises. The Shire of Kojonup is a keen supporter of this
program and looking forward to seeing its progress as we move forward into 2016.

LOTON CLOSE DEVELOPMENT – RESIDENT UPDATE – EDITION 9
The limestone block retaining walls and site filling
have been completed. Today the first concrete for the
footings is being poured. A concrete pump is being
used to pump the concrete from the trucks into the
footings. This will block half of the road while the
concrete is being poured. Residents of units 12-16
Loton Close were requested today to not park in their
driveways.
Access to the street will be interrupted whilst concrete
is being poured. Concrete is scheduled to be poured
on 7 April (in front of units 12-16) and Tuesday to
Friday next week (remaining units). If residents of
Loton Close are planning on using their cars on these
days, they are respectfully requested to park in the
carpark behind Springhaven, off Soldier Road. This
ensures that they won’t be blocked in their driveways
by concrete trucks. (Please do not block off the
vehicle access gate at the rear of Springhaven).
A road closed sign will be placed at the end of Loton
Close to discourage people (other than residents of
(A unit ready for concreting.)
Loton Close) to use the road while concrete is being
poured.
Commencing tomorrow, the existing Loton Close
residents will have individual water meters installed.
The plumber, Egabva, will liaise with effected
residents directly before works commence on each
unit.
This project has been made possible with the following funding partners:
SPRINGHAVEN UPGRADES
(Demolition in Progress) (Construction in Progress)
The old bathrooms have been demolished (including
the walls) and the walls for the new bathrooms and
waste room have been installed. The electrician and
the plumber have completed their pre-lay and the
plasterer will shortly be arriving to render the walls.
The residents have been extremely patient with the
level of noise and soon will be able to see their
bathrooms take shape.
Updates will be issued as works are scheduled.
Should you have any enquiries (including concerns
regarding dust or noise) in the interim, please contact
Michelle Dennis on 9831 2424.
