Is a configuration or combination of behavior patterns shared by a plurality and focused upon satisfaction of some basic group needs.
2 Elements of Social Institution
Social Roles• A social role defines
a set of behaviors that are expected of someone who holds a particular status.
Social Relations• Social
relation or social interaction is any relationship between two or more individuals.
Characteristic of Institutions1. Institutions are purposive.2. They are relatively permanent in their
content.3. The institution is structured.4. Each institution is a unified structure.5. The institution is necessarily value-
laden.
Classification of Institutions
1. Major Institutions- are those which the large number of people participate in, that are essential to the society.
2. Subsidiary Institutions- are the numerous, minor and variable institutions that are contained within the major institution.
FAMILIAL INSTITUTIONS
This is the system that regulates, stabilizes and standardizes sexual relations and the reproduction of children.
FUNCTIONS OF FAMILIAL INSTITUTIONS
1. Stable satisfaction of sex- Sex instinct is natural urge of
human being.2. Reproduction 3. Socializing
- Family is one of the primary agents of socialization.
4. Protection, security and care of the members of the family.
EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
• Is basically a formal process in which knowledge , skills, and values are systematically transmitted from one individual or group to another.
PRIMARY FUNCTION• Acquire knowledge and skills to individuals.
ECONOMIC INSTITUTIONS
• Is the set of arrangements by which a society produces, distributes, and consumes goods, services and other resources.
MAIN FUNCTION• Giving efficient use of scarce resources to
produce commodities for the satisfaction of unlimited needs and wants of man.
POLITICAL INSTITUTION
• Are organizations which create, enforce, and apply laws.
FUNCTIONALIST THEORYFunction s of political institutions include
protection from external enemies, resolving group conflict.
RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS
• Are groups of people that have similar beliefs in the existence of God or Gods.
3 MAJOR FUNCTIONS OF RELIGIOUS INSTITUTION
1. Provides rites of passage.2. Serves a means to provide answer to
ultimate questions.- why are we here on earth? Is there a
supreme beings? What happens after death?
