STALLION October, 2018 NEW ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Ms. Martinez joins Slider administration The Slider community would like to give a warm welcome to new assistant principal, Lorena Martinez. Before Ms. Martinez became Slider’s assistant principal, she was an excellent social studies teacher at Puentes Middle School. She enjoyed being at Puentes but likes Slider more because she says, “Students here are very respectful and kind.” Education is very important to our new assistant principal. She received her bachelors degree from UTEP in Bilingual Education. She also has an administration certification and a masters degree in Instructional Technology and Counseling. Ms. Martinez is also working on her doctorate in School Administration. Slider is her first assistant principalship. Ms. Martinez’s number one goal this year is to insure that all Stallions pass their State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness or STAAR tests. When asked if she had any children Ms. Martinez said, “Yes, I work with about 700 kids every day.” One of the more interesting things about her is that she has been to Europe. She said it was terrifying because it was right after the world trade centers were attacked on September 11, 2001. While she owns two Beta fish, her favorite animal is a koala. She likes to watch horror movies, including the original 1978 film, Halloween. Her favorite book is Charlotte’s Web. She also enjoys Columbian singer Shakira Mebarak, but her favorite rock song is Open Arms by Journey. Seventh grader, Saidy Gutierrez, said, “I love having Ms. Martinez as part of the Slider family. She seems really nice and down to earth.” So, if you see Ms. Martinez in the hall, stop and greet her with a friendly smile. PRIDE WILLIAM D. Each officer represents a different pillar of NJHS, including s c h o l a r s h i p , s e r v i c e , leadership, citizenship, and character.

In order to run for office, students had to write an essay describing why they were fit to be an officer. A board of teachers then selected the officers based on high academics and outstanding character.

Mrs . Cruz sa id , “The officers who were elected this year have hit the ground running and are doing an outstanding job. They have already attended a leadership c o n f e r e n c e a n d h a v e s p e a r h e a d e d o u r fi r s t initiative this past month with “Socktober.” I am excited to see them grow academically and blossom as leaders.”

NJHS will be collecting new socks throughout the month and donating them to La Posada home.

Slider’s new choir teacher, Mr. Daniel Maciel, has dedicated his life to his love of music. It has been a few years since Slider has had a choir program, and everyone is happy to see it back.

Choir is an organized group of singers who often sing in church or at school but to Mr. Maciel it is a passion. One of h is favor i te s o n g s , w h i c h h a s guided him throughout his career and personally touched him, is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Mr. Maciel was inspired by the words of Freddy Mercury and

felt encouraged to start his profession.

Choi r is Mr. Macie l fi rs t profession; he has taught at Montwood High School for three years. In his spare time, he loves to play the piano and sing in bands.

The Stallions performed their first choir performance at Montwood Middle School on September 24, and he was very p r o u d o f t h e i r

Slider’s annual fall festival was a huge success! The event was held at Slider on Friday, October 26, from 5 to 8 pm. Tickets could be purchased for a dollar each and were used for all attractions. There were fun carnival games, a haunted house, and a jumping balloon. Hungry Stallions enjoyed a variety of food including hamburgers, snow cones, popcorn, cake pops, corn, and donuts.

The haunted house was hosted by Mrs. Kern and Ms. Schwartz, and held in Mrs. Kern’s classroom. Over 20 students and teachers dressed in scary costumes were hiding inside, waiting to scare visitors. Many students were surprised by the haunted house because they didn’t expect it to be that frightening. “The whole thing was terrifying but the worst was when they chased me with a chain saw,” said seventh grader Joanne Tapia.

The profit from the fall festival will go to the school to purchase things like pizza and popcorn for h o n o r s t u d e n t s . S p e c i fi c programs including Theater Arts, Robotics, and Media will also benefit. The Stallion community had a great time and will plan more festivals in the future.

“It was fun! There were lots of games and food. The haunted house was a great addition,” exclaimed eighth grader, Damaris Davila.

Last year, over 80,000 people died from the flu, and this year, scientists predict there will be even more deaths.

Flu season is hitting hard, but Nurse Susie Zambrano teamed up with Immunize El Paso to host a flu clinic on October 30. Nurse Susie has held the clinic at Slider for the last ten years.

While the clinic usually gets around 40-60 people each year, this year they only saw around 20-30 people. Nurse Susie attributes this to the many free flu clinics in the area designed to combat this year’s flu. Influenza, or the flu, is a common viral infection that can be deadly. It has symptoms similar to the common cold, including fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, congestion, runny nose, headaches, and extreme fatigue.

The flu can be avoided by staying away from people who already have it, wash your hands, and get a flu shot every year. Seventh grader Saidy Gutierrez said, “It didn’t hurt as much as I thought it would, and I’m glad I’m not going to get sick!”
