2015Valencia

ECOC comes to London for the first time!

Starting outThe very fi rst exhibition joined the European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) with just 110 exhibition stands opening its doors to 100 visitors. Originally known as the EEOC (European Exhibition on Optical Communications), the exhibition quickly grew in success and by September 2000 it had grown to include over 220 exhibitors with a further 200 companies on the waiting list!

Sold out!The ECOC Exhibition was grouped under the ECOC name in 1999 and the exhibition fl oor was completely sold out from 1996-2000 and in Amsterdam in 2001 the show reached its biggest show so far – attracting a huge 2100 visitors and welcoming 397 companies to the exhibition.

visitors 100

Feature areas addedThe Telecoms Crash of 2000/2001 had a dramatic eff ect on the exhibition, sending both visitor and exhibitor numbers tumbling. By 2005 (Glasgow, Scotland) the exhibition was back on track and in 2006 in Cannes, France, two new feature areas were added to exhibition – the Market Focus Theatre and the FTTx Resource Centre.

Market Focus was introduced to the exhibition hall as a way to provide key information on the latest developments within the fi bre optics industry. The theatre was launched with 9 sessions which were a huge success with both visitors and exhibitors alike.

The FTTx Resource Centre was led by the Light Brigade and provided a central point where visitors could view products, meet with the experts and gather FTTx-related literature.

2007: Record year! After the success of the exhibition following the introduction of two new feature areas, 2007 (Berlin, Germany) was a record year with 4700 visitors to a sold out exhibition. A huge increase on the 100 visitors to the 1995 event and 2100 visitors to the 2001 exhibition. An additional feature was added to the program for the exhibition, with CTTS Training providing intensive hands-on training sessions throughout the three days of the exhibition. The ECOC Forum magazine was also launched in 2007, providing visitors and exhibitors with a round-up of the latest industry news and product developments as well as articles from some of the top people from within the fi bre optic communications community.

Smile, you’re on camera!2009 (Vienna, Austria) saw the launch of ECOC TV, the offi cial TV news channel, which featured news coverage from the show, interviews with Market Focus speakers and exhibitors on a range of emerging issues. Look out for the crew in the exhibition hall as you walk around the show.

In the space of just three years, the popularity of Market Focus meant that the programme grew to include 17 sessions running across three days and for the fi rst time a full Market Focus theatre was constructed within the exhibition.

Brand new FTTx Village In 2011 (Geneva, Switzerland), the FTTx Resource Centre was relaunched by CTTS Training to become the FTTx Centre featuring an interactive FTTx Village, live engineering demonstrations and a chance to browse FTTx products in 11 dedicated zones. In 2012 the show returned to Amsterdam for yet another hugely successful year, with 4491 visitors to the exhibition and 321 companies exhibiting, the new FTTx Centre featured a record 65 products from diff erent companies in the FTTx zones.

2012 also saw the relaunch of the ECOC Forum in to the Optical Connections magazine, which has now become a stand-alone news website, newsletter and magazine for the optical communications industry.

ECOC comes to London! In 2013 the event came to London, home of the exhibition organisers, Nexus Business Media, for the fi rst time. Held close to central London, the exhibition attracted 4607 visitors to a packed exhibition programme, with 29 Market Focus sessions, four new live demonstrations in the FTTx Centre and a busy exhibition fl oor. 2016

Every year, and this 41st edition is no exception,

ECOC is the leading forum in Europe for keeping

up with the top research advances and scientifi c

discoveries in the fi eld of optical communications

and related photonic technologies. With a global

attendance and delegates coming from all over

the fi ve continents, ECOC provides a unique

opportunity for networking and interaction that

nobody interested in the fi eld should miss.

This 41st edition is held in Spain for the third

time after the editions of Barcelona (1986) and

Madrid (1998) and in this occasion our venue

is Valencia, the third largest city in our country.

Valencia is unique in combining Mediterranean

tradition and modernity in its cultural off er,

fi rst-class blue-fl ag beaches and it is, in fact,

the home of one of the universal dishes of the

Mediterranean cuisine, the Paella.

ECOC 2015 provides the ideal opportunity for

anyone interested in optical communications,

including researchers, product developers, sales

managers and telecommunication analysts and

market developers, to develop an up-to-date

understanding of the fi eld. Furthermore, year

after year, ECOC remains as relevant and vibrant

as ever. The fact that 45% of the conference

delegates typically come from Europe, 35%

from Asia/Pacifi c and 20 % from North America,

highlights that ECOC is a truly global conference.

Closely linked to the conference, the ECOC

Exhibition is one of the largest events in

Europe to present the most advanced R&D

and commercially available products in optical

communication technologies. Its attractiveness

hasn’t ceased growing up during the last 10

years. Last year’s edition attracted over 1050

delegates from 35 countries along with the

300 exhibitors.

As in prior editions, exhibitors are welcome to

attend the plenary session on Monday morning

(Monday, 28 September), where worldwide

renowned keynote speakers will address some

of the major trends in business and research.

This session features talks by Sir David Payne,

Director of the Optoelectronics Research Centre,

University of Southampton; Mr Enrique Blanco,

Global CTO of Telefónica, Spain; Dr. Thibaut

Kleiner, Head of Unit “Network Technologies”

atthe European Commission DG CONNECT and

Dr. Andreu Vea, Digital Champion for Spain.

ECOC 2015 technical programme will continue

the new distribution in seven main areas that was

off ered last year for the fi rst time. The technical

content of each one has been supervised by a

specifi c subcommittee that, as tradition rules, is

composed by world renown experts and chaired

by a distinguished scientist. All in all, an impressive

Technical Programme Committee composed of

109 members has selected a total of 400 oral and

poster presentations, which include a blend of

tutorials, invited and contributed papers. Following

the trend of last years, spatial division multiplexing,

datacenter communications, advanced

modulation formats, DSP post-processing

in coherent systems and network function

virtualization (NFV) continue to be hottopics, while

the programme also includes rising star topics

such as fl exgrid and superchannels, advanced

Silicon and InP integrated optics, multicore fi ber

technologies, MIMO communications and radio

over fi ber technologies for emerging 5G, access

and in-home networks. In addition and, as it is

also a tradition, six one-day workshops focusing

on specifi c hot-topics will be off ered on the

conference opening day providing the opportunity

for highly interactive discussions.

ECOC 2015 will held two technical symposia,

both of which will be unique and special.

2015 is the international Year of Light and

ECOC2015 includes a special commemoration

symposium, Light: Enabling the Global Internet

Era, where distinguished keynote speakers

will address how optical technologies have

been responsible for the transformation in

communications, the evolution of the Internet as

we have experienced it in the last two decades,

and why they will play an ever-increasing role

in tomorrow’s communication networks. A

second symposium, Optical Communications

and Networks for Datacenters will focus on

discussing the requirements, challenges and

solutions for the next-generation datacenters.

We wish you to have instant access to information

at all times and also to interact with us we

therefore encourage you to check our conference

webpage (www.ecoc2015.org), use our

especially developed conference App or simply

interact by tweeting #ECOC2015 and giving us

feedback (@ECOC_2015).

Last, but not least, the traditional Post-deadline

session on Thursday afternoon will give attendees

the opportunity to listen on-site to the last-minute

new and signifi cant research results in rapidly

evolving topics.

As ECOC 2015 organizers we believe that it is

very important to keep the traditions that have

contributed to its long-standing success, but at

the same we have tried to experiment an innovate

both in the technical and social programmes.

For the fi rst time, ECOC will held a young

researcher’s meeting after the get together drink

on Sunday and will hold a rump session Optical

innovation, quo vadis? on Monday 28 September,

where assistants will have the opportunity of

debating while enjoying Spanish wine and tapas.

The rump session will be held after the Welcome

Reception that will include traditional Spanish

food, drinks and a fl amenco performance. ECOC

poster session on Tuesday will be co-located

with a free-of-charge Valencian wine and beer

tasting. Finally the Gala Dinner on Wednesday

will be held at the Las Arenas Balneario Resort -

Luxury 5 star hotel in Valencia seaside, created

with the objective of restoring the beaches of

Las Arenas and La Malvarrosa in the sea front of

Valencia city. The building, with a classical look,

combines the architectural beauty of the historical

Balneario Las Arenas resort, founded in 1898,

with the elegance and comfort of modern design,

occupying an exceptional seaside location.

We encourage you to take the opportunity whilst

here to visit the city of Valencia, enjoy its cultural

and entertainment off er provided by its medieval

downtown, the modern the City of Arts and

Sciences museum resort and the unique quality

of its local cuisine.

We look forward to extending a warm welcome to

you in Valencia for this 41st edition!
