ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH LORAIN, OH

John the Baptist’s disciples came to Jesus and

asked him if he was the anticipated Messiah (Mt 11:2

-11). Why did he just respond with another question

(i.e., “What did you go out to see?”)?

Several times Jesus used this questioning or

“Socratic” method, and this is one of them. He asked

a question not because of an inability to answer the

original question, but rather to lead the questioners to

discover the truth for themselves. It is on this

“journey of discovery” that one understands, through

a personal encounter with reality.

“What did you go out to see?” This is a really

great question to open the minds of the listeners. Je-

sus is saying, “look at my works – what do you see?”

Still another way to ask the question is: “Who do you

say that I am?” Actions speak louder than words, and

the measure of a man can be obtained, in part, by ob-

serving those actions. If the blind are healed, cripples

walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, and the dead

are raised, those very works point toward the Messiah

– the One who came to fulfill the scriptures (in this

case, the words of Isaiah 35:1-6, our First Reading).

One of the great seventeenth century saints

said that “it is our works, whether good or bad, that

form us, and it is by them that we ought to be recog-

nized.” There comes a necessary time that we cease

observing the good works of others, and begin to

emulate and practice those virtues. This is how one

becomes formed or molded into a true disciple, and

discovers the presence of Jesus in those he/she en-

counters.

ADORATION CHAPEL

“O Holy Night, the stars are brightly shining, it is the night of our dear Savior’s birth.” In these

days of darkness, it is increasingly difficult to see the light. Without the ever present Love of

Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, how will we survive? “A thrill of hope the weary world re-

joices for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.” More than ever, we need to come before Je-

sus in Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration to pray unceasingly for our church, priests, and victims of

abuse. “Fall on your knees, O hear the angels’ voices, O Night Divine.” With every Holy Hour that we make,

the Light of Christ is born into our world anew, and dispels the darkness. His Eucharistic Presence is the only

answer; Jesus is the healing balm that cures every soul and makes every heart whole. Baby Jesus, we thank

You, we praise You, we hope in You, we adore You. We console Your Eucharistic Heart weeping for Your

children and promise to work more than ever that You may be loved through Perpetual Eucharistic Adora-

tion . . .You are wonderful counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Is 9:6)

“And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of

Mary, that the babe in her womb leapt.” The first person in

the world to welcome Jesus, to recognize Him in the womb of

His own mother was a child, John the Baptist. How wonderful

- God chose a pre-born child to recognize His Son!

SCHOOL UPDATES FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Saint Teresa of Calcutta once said, “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly end-

less.” It is with a full heart that I want to express my thanks to all of you that have helped our cause during the We

Give Catholic day. We are blessed to announce that we raised our total donation amount from last year by over 400%

and increased our amount of donors from 4 to 137! This could not have been done without you. Your commitment to

St. Anthony School is a true gift from God for our teachers and students.

I also want to thank Kathleen Obermiller. She has been the glue in this fundraising endeavor and has gone

above and beyond to ensure its success. As a former student, teacher, current mother and staff member of St. An-

thony’s, she is the epitome of what we are all about. Without her leadership and drive we would not have been so suc-

cessful.

In closing, our mission is not over. We will continue to raise funds for our students in order to give them the

playground that they deserve. Again, thank you and God bless you. ~Mr. Julio Alarcon
