11th Sunday in Ordinary Time — Domingo 11 Tiempo Ordinario (2Sm 12:7-10; Gal 2:16, 19-21; Lk/Lc 7:36-8:3)

June 12, 2016

Finding God in the Holy Land

I have always wanted to go on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Finally, this dream became a reality, thanks to the generosity of the brothers and sisters of the Francophone communities of St Camillus. The year 2016 will remain in my memory as a year of special blessings and goodness granted to me by the Lord. Upon arrival in Tel Aviv, we were welcomed by our pilgrimage guide - a Melkite, Greek Catholic Christian man born and raised in Jerusalem. After all the routine formalities at the airport, our bus took us to Bethlehem. There, we found a welcoming and cheerful staff of the Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation that had organized our trip. We were told that our presence in Bethlehem was a sign of hope and great moral support for the dwindling Christian population in the Holy Land. Our guide took us to the Shepherd’s Field, the place where it is believed that the angel appeared to the shepherds, announcing the birth

of the Messiah. We celebrated Mass there full of joy. We also prayed for all the intentions that our families and friends back home had entrusted to us. Afterwards, we visited the place where Jesus was born. I was deeply moved, as I prayed in the grotto and reflected on the mystery of the almighty, powerful God who became poor and vulnerable to save us and set us free. Walking out of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, we had the opportunity to interact with the very friendly local people. Some of them told us that they were Christians like us. One way in which we supported them was by purchasing some of the beautiful olive wood crafts that they make and sell. It is a major source of income for them, helping their families to survive and remain in the land of their ancestors. The Israeli separation wall cuts them off from Jerusalem and from many basic economic opportunities.

After Bethlehem, we visited Jerusalem, Berzeit, Ramallah, Jericho, Nazareth, Mount Tabor and spent time at the Sea of Galilee. In Jerusalem, we met with with the Latin Patriarch – the head of the Catholic Church in Israel, the Occupied Palestinian Territories and in Jordan. He said three things that caught my attention: 1) Your visit

encourages and gives hope to your Mother Church here in the Holy

Land. 2) Even though we face many difficulties, I am proud to be a

Christian. 3) Our churches in Jordan have welcomed thousands of

Iraqi Christian refugees. They are filling our churches and revitalizing

us with their deep faith...

Our group of 12 pilgrims did the Stations of the Cross in the old city of Jerusalem. We followed in the footsteps of Jesus to the place where he was hung on the cross. That was a powerful experience of prayer for me. Another special moment on our pilgrimage, where I strongly felt the presence of God, was when we celebrated the Holy Mass on Mount Tabor. This is where Jesus was transfigured in the presence of his disciples. There, I felt such a profound peace and joy, I wanted to stay there. I understood what

Peter might have felt when he said to Jesus: “Lord, it is good for us to be here. Let us build here three tents ...” Like Peter, I desired to stay there. Yet, I knew that God wanted me to go down the mountain and travel back home, to tell other people about Jesus and face up challenges in building up God’s Kingdom. In short, the Holy Land pilgrimage has deepened my faith by helping me to find God in the historic realities of Jesus’ life and mission and in my brothers and sisters who now live in the Holy Land. Peace and Joy of Christ Jean-Marie, OFM

You don’t deserve to be abused Violence at home hurts! You are not alone. Now is the time to protect yourself and those who count on you for safety. At St. Camillus Church, we have a team of per-sons ready to confidentially listen to you and help you with next steps. Please E-mail [email protected] or call the parish office at 301-434-8400. Here are some common “myths” about domestic vio-lence. Myth: Domestic violence is only physical abuse. Physical violence is only part of a larger pattern of abuse, which also includes psychological, emotional, sexual and/or economic abuse. Sometimes there is no physical abuse, but the abuser will use the other forms of abuse to exert power and control over one’s spouse or a partner. Myth: Domestic abuse is just a momentary loss of temper. Domestic abuse is just the opposite of a “momentary loss of temper.” The abuser makes a decision to abuse. It is an ongoing technique to enforce control through the use of fear, which is a part of a pattern of abuse.
